i want the stock experience (ability to play VOD Prime content) but i also want google store on the device.
I've done the Energy Rom and Gederom (i likede Gederom) but i lose the ability to play Prime content. I have used OTA Rootkeeper but it doesn't allow me to do what i want on an ICS rom.
So how do i go about getting the best of both worlds? I currently restored to stock so i've got no root or recovery. I don't really want to put any rom's on it right now - just want to be able to access the google store too.
Can i do that by just re-root with KFU and install the Extra's package, then OTA Rootkeeper?

I recommend the MoDaCo ROM. Just root using KFU - or whatever methods you agree most comfortable with. Then install the MoDaCo ROM. This will give you a modified stock launcher that is very fast and has all the necessities (KF launcher, market, etc.). Then download OTA Root keeper from the market. Temp undo root using the application and force close the VoD application and relaunch it. You should be able to now watch prime videos. The same works for the Kindle library. If you dislike stock launcher, you can install a different launcher on top, and go back to KF launcher when necessary.

Hope this helps,

Yep, you are looking for the Modaco rom. Since you like ICS, you can use go launcher ex with an ICS theme.

You cannot run Google Play without root permissions because it will only run as a system app with the proper permissions which you need root to modify. As far as warranty goes, you can restore a rooted kindle fire to stock and remove any proof of the fact that it has ever been rooted by following one of the guides to return to stock.
I used to have my KF completely bricked after running ICS and different ROMs on it and so forth and recently sent it back to Amazon for ghosting. After having restored it to stock and doing a factory reset, it couldn't be differentiated from one that was brand new out of the box.
Thanks but I still think there's got to be a way to mod Google play because I have 1 mobile and it works flawlessly, so I guess ill try to mod it

No, there is not a way to do it without root permission. You have to have root access to move to system/apk and change permissions.

I appreciate your drive and willingness to try but the reason it won't work is because even if you were to find a way to get the app to run without being run from system/app you will still not be able to use it to install apps. The way it was designed to integrate with android is to contact google's servers and directly install the app to your device using its own permissions derived from it being a system app. If it doesn't have those permissions it won't know what to do and will crash. It cannot just download the app to a folder like 1mobile does. I understand that you want to use google play without rooting, I tried to do it too before I eventually gave in and rooted, but trust me you will be much happier with the device when you have root permissions. If you decide to stay with the stock amazon version of android I would recommend trying modaco's rooted stock ROM which comes with google play already installed, it will not only save you the trouble of having to attempt to install the app yourself (which is actually more of a hassle than you would think) but it also has better stability than stock does and you don't have to worry about amazon upgrading you overnight without your permission and you losing root.

How do you circumvent this? Apps such as crackle require flash but users on JB can not have flash? How do you get around this?
JB users can't have flash?
From what I know and read, you can, till August something when Adobe will pull the app out of the Market or something.
I could be wrong of course.
From my sexy white, Nocturnaled HTC One X
If you already have Flash on your phone (such as having Flash installed on ICS before updating to JB), you can continue to update Flash from the Market, but if you don't already have it you won't be able to install it from the Market. If I am not wrong, you can manually install Flash if you have the APK.

Im planning on rooting and flashing CM 10.1 on my ATT GS3. Last time I flashed I had trouble w/ Google Apps and other Nexus apps so I flashed back to stock image. So now I am wondering what is a good Google Apps package ( Google Now, Play Music, Play Store etc.), also need Camera app link, and how do I flash it ( can I just use TWRP). Basically I need links to get all the Nexus apps and how to flash them. Thanks for your help! ~ You could say I am a noob
Typically, gapps are put together in a flashable package. There's no need to try to build it yourself. Just make sure to use the property version for the ROM your running. Typically, there are links in the first post of the ROM thread for GApps. If not, its available from goo manager. As for nexus apps, I'm not sure if those would be compatible with the S3.

The camera can be found in the themes and apps section. Its hit or miss for me but if you are cm or other custom ROM it will already be there. All gapps packages can be flashed in twrp using the install button. Just make sure you get the right version for your ROM.

I have my kindle rooted but I don't know if I should try a custom Rom. If I do flash one then it would be cynagenmod 10.1. I also have titanium backup to transfer my apps.
My main questions are:
Will the Rom work with the amazon app store and will I have to sign in again?
Will apps I got from the app store be compatible with the new Rom?
What exactly will titanium backup backup?
will cynagen mod 10.1 make my device compatible with jellybean apps from google play?
if I choose to go back will I have to re log in to Amazon?
Is there anything else I should know?
Thanks to anyone who can help me with these questions.

When I installed CM I found that apps I downloaded from the Amazon Market place prior to flashing (one's designated as KF edition) would not show up in Amazon after flashing. The other apps from Amazon will be OK. Maybe if you back up the apks before flashing (if you have any KF apps from Amazon) you could install them after flashing.
Thanks to both of you. It was very useful. I will probably be getting 10.1 soon.

its worth it. let me know if you have any more questions
What happens after the root ?
Do I have to run factory reset ?
Do all my settings stay the same ?
Do I now have the SD app and media transfer capabilities ?
Any feedback and info will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys
You should just Google that question and read about why you should root. Google is your friend.

Nothing.
No.
Yes.
No.
Rooting just gives you access to the system partition. That is it. Nothing else. It does this by adding a system app that acts as a gateway over what apps can and can't have acecss to making changes to the system partition.
Once oyu are rooted you then can use apps and other tricks to add thigns like SD stoarge and stuff like that.

2 questions for you:
what Android and baseband versions is your S4 on?
what are you interested in doing after rooting? do you want to stay near-stock or change/customize everything?
I think I am going to use CyanogenMod Installer and be done with it. This seems to be the simplest and most safe solution for newbies like me.
Plus Cyanogen is really close to Kitkat UI so I will just go with that.
One question though:
I know that I don't have to root my phone to use the installer, is the phone being rooted using the installer ? Or does it stay unrooted with the new OS ?

KitKat is not a UI. KitKat is a version of the Android operating system. The UI is determined by the ROM, which uses the operating system as a base.
You will find that Cyanogen UI is VERY different from the stock TouchWiz ROM UI that you have now. (You may like it better. Half of custom romusers prefer AOSP roms like CM over stock ROMs like TouchWiz or Sense. Half the people hate them. It's all about prefernce)
As fro root, root is not in the phone. Root is in the operating system itself. Cyanogen comes with root preinstalled, so by installing CM you will have root. All custom roms are pre-rooted like this. All root really is is an app in the system partition called Superuser. That's it.
Thanks for the info again.
My friend is trying to back up his data before we both proceed with the CyanogenMod Installer but has difficulties with backing up third party apps. He says he can back up Samsung apps with no problem but there is always a problem with third party apps. Any recommendation on good backup app ? He also purchased Titanium backup but he needs to root his phone to use it.
That's for my friend now I have one more question:
Will I have googleapps with cyanogenmod installer right from the start ? I still want to use google play store, gmail, google maps and so forth.

Just root the phone first and make your back ups.
CF Auto root. It takes 30 seconds. It's the easiest thing in the world. You literally CANNOT screw it up.
Root hte phone, make backups, then install CM.
Also, Helium backup is what I use. Makes everything into a clean batch operation. And it's free. But you need to be rooted.
If I don't need to back anything up should I still root my phone ? As you mentioned before CM Installer comes with the root.
And also after the CM is installed will I have an option to go back to my previous system ?
Will it install Stock Recovery ? And what does that mean ? I am sorry I am really new to all this. Just trying to learn.

You can always go back via odin (search and ye shall find more aboit odin). Just install CM and be done with it. Take the plunge.

After CM installation using CM installer, do I get all google apps installed ? Such as Gmail, Maps, Google Voice Search ?
And is lookout app working with CM ?

Not sure with the cm installer but I don't think so. Tge gapps package doesnt come with cm when you flash it in recovery. But its easy to do. Just download gapps, they are in every single rom thread on xda, and flash them in recovery
