although the Epic 4G Touch could play most videos, some of my videos (mp4,avi,divx) could not be played(it has sound but no picture) and the way to solve it is to download a video player on market on use software decoding which eats up cpu usage which in turn eats up battery life
according to THIS, it should be able to play almost all format there is available but that isn't always the case.
so basically what i am looking at is
*hardware accelerated Video/Audio Codec
*convert the video to 480 x 800 (or close depending on the aspect ratio of movie)
*high bitrate (not too high that it would drain the battery life or the file would become too big and the quality is more like a placebo)
*Video/Audio Converter software that does the above list
i am thinking about h.264 but do not know what presets the E4GT supports
Check out vPlayer with unlocker as well, have that player as well add mkvideo, from play store and have had 0 issues with ANY type of video, as well as no battery drain issues with either, but my stock video player hadn't given me issues with any type of video file either...might want to have that checked

I'm wondering what is the optimal encoding specs that would work on the Desire Z?
I have the Rebuild of Evangelion 2.22 on video, but it's in 1080p and it's 6gigs in size. I'm wondering what's the best specs for me to run the video file on my desire z smoothly.
I'm looking at size, bitrate, encoder, and audio specs.
Convert to avi and install either vplayer or rockplayer. No extra bs needed with apps like that.

I'm still in need of the resolution and bitrate. I'm probably going to be encoding the file in mp4 (h.264)
Like I said you don't need to do anything besides convert to avi. I play bluray rips of very larg size and works fine. When I first started adding videos I was asking the same question you are. Use one of those 2 players.
Or you could google your question and find other answers way faster than waiting for responses here
Why do you want to use mp4? Rockplayer and vplayer play tons more codecs. Less compression=better video/audio

I use MP4 because it is 90% more reliable than other codecs out there and the quality to compression ratio is pretty good. I would like to be able to fit a feature length movie in the small 8gb card I have on my phone (4gigs available atm)
And i have already searched google, nothing really came up. maybe i'm using the wrong keywords, but there was nothing that mentioned resolution, bitrate, etc.
besides, watching 1080p on such a small screen doesn't make it look any better as opposed to it being watched in 720p or so since it's so small.
I've had the best results by using Handbrake and converting the video to mp4 (ffmpeg) format and resizing it to the Z's native resolution. Settings are pretty much default with around 1500kbps (could be too much depending on the source).
sounds good. I'm probably going to leave it at 720p for safety's sake, but I'll re-encode the file to 640x480 for comparison.
I find that I get better video quality results using SUPER than I do with Handbrake, I'm sure it's just a settings thing since they both use the same tools under the hood.
Was searching for a guide as well, from this article, Desire Z has been known to support h264 with baseline profile at level 3
check the link for full details and basic handbrake guide http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/converting_video_for_the_htc_desire_z.cfm

I use iSkysoft on my PC to convert to mp4 and have over 1200 movies. After the conversion all the android players work on all the movies. I also use Tversity to stream 800x480 over 4G and 320x240 over 3G. If streaming keep the bit rate of the conversion at 900kbs or lower. Otherwise, you will get buffering problems. $20 per year for a dynamic DNS to stream Tversity over any mobile browser on android from your PC. 320x240 is a little grainy. However, works very well with no buffering issues for in motion in your car. Tethering to a larger tablet also works well for in motion in the car.
I would like to have your feedback on the most energy efficient media player for our HOX's. I use bsplayer lite with video brightness at 50%, HW decoding ON and always with headphones. I know that there are many players on the market like mx, Mobo, dice ect.The majority of video files that I watch, are xvid avi's, and x264 mp4's and rarely mkv's. With this setup I loose 20% of my battery for a 40min series video. Does the use of HW acceleration has an impact on energy saving or SW is better?
So, which one from your experience is more energy efficient and at which settings?
I am too looking for such media player.
Can u clarify if software encoding enabled will draw more battery than Hardware encoding.
From what I found on the internet SW acceleration does draw more energy, but I cannot be sure since I didn't test it myself and I don't know if Ican do it properly in order to be really accurate.

This is for those who have issues in playing Youtube HD files and 720p files on Defy+ and to find the best tweaked settings (CPU Freq, Voltage, memory, settings etc) that enables us to do so.
I have found some interesting facts.
1) Youtube HD (1080) plays without any lag when media.stagefright is enabled.
2) When it is disabled, HD shows black screen
3) All mkv files play on the Defy+. I tried 720p, and it plays sometimes (not always...sometimes it lags and audio/video has sync issues)
Just fyi, HD enabled in YouTube isn't 1080, it is probably 480p as that is the native res of our phone (854x480).
I have found that for Other HD files like MKV and MP4, they play fine as long as the bitrate is low. Higer bitrates and weird things start to happen, like video lagging or not playing at all.
Your facts aren't valid for all roms.
E.g. on CM10 you can't run 720p yet.
Hello everyone.
I bought a Xperia Z5 Premium Dual last month and I want to use it for movies. But the app Movies doesn't support DD 5.1 and AAC audio so I used MX Player. Do the 4K upscaling and Image Enhancements work in MX Player? Does the MX Player downscale 4K videos to 1080p? When I watch a 1080p video in MX Player, if I choose SW decoder, the details seem to be smoother (I can't see pixels), and if I choose HW/HW+ decoder, the details seem to be clearer (I can see pixels).
Sorry for my bad English.
That would be an interesting thing to figure out.
The only objective test I can think of doing on a single device is going into Airplane mode and playing a long(~30min) 4K video on both players with identical brightness settings (H/W and S/W on MX).
Afterwards compare battery percentage drop, or ideally measure power consumption with an external application for more detailed results
Whenever the power drain is less, should mean it's rendering at 1080p
If you have some time on your hands, go crazy. I can try it over the weekend
Just use tubemate app (search on google)
You will find the option to download videos in 4k mp4 because z5p supports mp4 format easily and after you will download you can see there will be a 4k lable in album apps (i mean on the latest file you downloaded)

That or OGYoutube. OGYoutube is the normal Youtube app with a few extra features, such as downloading.
