[Q] who uses a kindle fire? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i know this isn't the kindle section but i want answers from people i trust. who uses a kindle and are you running stock or a rom? if rom what one? do you lose the ability to connect to amazon for streaming and reading books? i kind of like the stock but the geek in me keeps tossing around putting cm9 on it.

I believe there is a kindle app for Android to read books on the play store

Not from this forum just came across your post. I have kindle fire running miui an older version. You do lose ability to watch amazon video if rooted and custom roms. Like another poster said, there is an app on market for reading books but alot of people complain its no where near as good as the stock reader. No there is NOT an external sd card so the other poster must be speaking of a different reader. I love my kindle and the fact that there is no way to hard brick it! Alot of people think its hard bricked, but the fire can be fixed no matter what error is there. Alot of roms for it, I've tried a few of but I just keep going back to miui. Sorry to hijack your post.

It was the first thing I did with mine. I got mine first month it came out so lots of development hadn't been done yet but it came along quick. Thing I hate about stock is that everytime amazon updates (every 2-3 months it seems) it breaks root so another way to root has to be found. That is enough for me to just stay off stock completely.

It gives you access to google play store which gives you access to more apps. Also needed if you want to install a recovery and try different roms.

New from OG Epic, advice needed.

Hello,
I dropped and broke my epic today. The sprint dude said I could pay 100 for insurance to replace it, or use my premier early discount $200 since premier ends this month.
Anyway, I ran SRF 1.2 and ACS ICS 5.5.
What do you guys recommend for roms on this phone? I forgot how to attain root and recovery.
Just fyi I will be using the go series (launcher, sms, contacts, dialer).
One last thing, what is the best way to transfer everything to my new phone?

I get it that its q & a but your questions are all in the wiki and to me we all need to do a like better jib of reading up on things which saves on the off the wall threads but OK I will spoon feed ya... try UnNamed its a nice rom and of course Calks is always a great choice. There is a CM rom in development as well. Now if you like odex or barebone roms the forum has a couple with nice ICS themes. Now to root there are a few methods but most say us sfhubs method which is pretty easy.
I hope I helped you although everything I said can be found with a little research... Enjoy and welcome lol

It may not sound cool but think about it your in a forum where of course everyone is going to have a different opinion. One of the most asked questions is what's the best blah blah blah........ The best for me may not be the best for you... try a rom nandroid TB and move on to the next one.....

I went ahead and rooted using this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728
I then went about getting Clockwork Mod Recovery by way of Rom Manager. Easiest thing to do. I will be installing Calkulin's rom first.
I'm still tripping about adding all of my data from my first Epic. I don't get it since we are talking about two different SD cards. =/
EDIT:
I had to use this to install clockwork mod instead:

I will try it!

I DON'T know many about MLO and xloader partition what's in the update-script.
I wonder whether we can modify the update-script according to 6.3.1's ?
Please don't try flashing the original Amazon 2nd gen file. I'll see what I can do w/ the ROM using our existing 3.0 kernel when I get time.
It would be even more fantastic if you guys might can use the new ics stock's kernel to fix the charging detector problem, it's ics right? Is it possible?

I also do not think Amazon will do anything for kindle fire. It is simply not an aspect of their business plan. You and I play with the hardware like it is hardware. Amazon is looking at sales from subscribers. This is why a diminished is works for them, but not for us.

That might actually be in our favour, if they are selling the fire at the bare minimum price and their target is selling their digital goods, then they have no reason not to continue to cater to all their user base. Since better software makes users more inclined to just stick with Amazon and continue consuming.
Of course one never knows, so take this as just my 2 cents.

Kindle Fire structure / charging contacts

This is the second Fire I've had where the contacts went bad. Now I have a rooted modded fire and can't send it back. What gives with the way it went bad again? Design flaw? Bad luck? Misuse (I often use it while its plugged in and its hard to not apply pressure to the cord.
Anybody w/ experience messing with the case/contacts/etc. Want to give me some advice or how to fix this?
sent from my original Kindle Fire masquerading as a Galaxy Nexus
Any time a structure is mounted to the board, this problem can occur. The way to avoid it is to mount the port on the case or some other way and use connectors to the board. This requires more space and increased production costs. So, it is simply a design flaw, but not a design intent. The fix is actually a solder on the board, a skill I certainly do not have!

This is actually the 2nd time I've had to send it back for the same reason. I thought it was a fluke the first time. Now that I understand the problem I'm surprised it doesn't happen to everybody!

I've had my Kindle Fire replaced and want to stick with stock ROM so I can use Kindle Launcher/Reader (it's rooted with googleapps installed). However I find that a lot of my apps from Google Play claim to be incompatible with my device. I previously changed its "appearance" to galaxy nexus on my JB ROM but I can't get it to work on this ROM. Am I really forced to choose between Google and Amazon? D*MN THEM!
EDIT: I realized I had MoDaCo before. I flashed it on this device and Googleplay "sees" me now. I think as a galaxy tab. Nice.

Okay, so they are still replacing 1st gen. with 1st gen. Good to know.

Fire good for a kid? Other suggestions?

So, my wife and I were thinking about getting our daughter a Leap Frog Explorer 2 Tablet.
Upon reading the reviews, and specs, a lot of the recommendations were to just buy her a real tablet with a good case.
I own a Nexus 7. We don't let her play with it on account of it not having a case. She loves my wife's iPhone and my Android. We have lots of kid friendly apps on both.
We don't want to spend a ton on the tablet. I see Amazon has the Kindle Fire for $159. That's pretty reasonable, and I can get an otter box for it.
However, before I buy, I want to read into other options. Do any of you know any other viable options out there? I really prefer Android OS and I hear that I can root and ROM a Kindle Fire. A case is also a must. I looked on Newegg and saw a lot of cheap (never heard of the brand name before) Android tablets for $70-$150, but I'm skeptical on quality, and I have to have a durable case for it.
Thanks in advance for any help!!!
*Ninja Edit*
Another nice addition would be an HDMI out. My Nexus 7 does not have one but it isn't a deal breaker. Still don't want to spend more than $160ish.
*Another Ninja Edit*
Are the ones Amazon currently selling the second generation? They are rootable/ROMable right?
Whatever you do..... Do not buy a no name android tablet. They are garbage in every aspect. Lots of them don't even give you access to the playstore or even have multi-touch. I personally don't know about the kindle fire but I got my son a 7" p1000 galaxy tab ( a little outdated but cheap) and he plays that thing.to death. Personally I definitely think you're better off getting a name brand tablet. The kid will never touch your phone again LOL.

Thank you for the fast reply! Thats why we're thinking about the tablet. We would LOVE to have our phones back.
I figured a no name would be an awful idea. I have played with one before a friend got, and I was beyond unimpressed.
I really wish I could afford another Nexus 7 and just put a really nice case on it. I love the N7.
My 3 year old niece loves the Kindle Fire and she can navigate around it pretty well. They have the parental controls set up so she can't mess it up. They got her an Innotab 2 to be given to her as a gift but I don't think she'll like it as she is accustomed to the Kindle.

Yeah, there's guides here that you can follow.
Make sure it's a first generation kindle. I believe the other versions have locked boot loaders so you won't be able to modify it.

I'd really love to run a custom ROM on here. I don't like the Kindle version of AndroidOS.
I've got a Nexus 7 too, and I love it to run similarly to that.
Ok good, you have the 1st gen. I recommend rooting it with KFU (search is your friend)
If you want it to be like your nexus 7, with android 4.1, I recommend flashing Alien Droid. Runs great.
If you don't mind it being an older version of android, I HIGHLY recommend flashing a CM7 Rom. They are stable and have great battery life

First off, War Eagle. Dual Boot could be cool. Especially because this tablet will have 2-3 users. We bought it for our daughter to play with, and I'd like to set it up with parental controls etc. My wife steals my Nexus7 all the time, so she may play with this as well. I'm liking CM10 right now, but i'd like to find a stable 4.2 release, that's what my N7 runs.

That's what I've heard. There aren't a lot of pics/screenshots of it on their development page though
CM7 ROMs are very good for battery, they can sleep for days with minimal drain. I too have a dual booted Kindle with CM7 and CM10. I hardly ever use CM10 because of battery drain but it supports OTG so I stick with it.
If I had to choose what to recommend to you I would say CM7 because not only great battery but it has had much more time to be fine tuned and tweaked by developers. A young child would be just fine with CM7 (that's only my opinion) because it's simplistic in nature.

War Eagle back even tho it was a horrible year for us
I still love my tigers!!!
CM10 is great I love it I just wish battery life was better...
That's why I love my dualboot...
CM7 is also great like he said it does have great battery life too.
Just not quite as good as Modaco (in my opinion)
So many great devs here and just keeps getting better..

Indeed, not the best year. Especially 2 years after a national championship.
Wen't with CM10, gonna play with it for a while. I don't think battery life will be a big issue as my daughter will plug it in each night. If it turns out to be, we will put CM7 on there instead
Now I gotta go find a good parental control app.
Sure sounds like a first gen device to me I think you got rather lucky but I`m a little confused at how.

Apps 2 SD

Have a note 2 and didnt realize you couldnt move apps to sd until after buying the phone. So now I need to get around that restriction.
My device is rooted and on stock rom.
Can someone please point me to instructions for setting up apps 2 sd, or doing the internal v external sd swap?
Thanks in advance for the help
Foldermount can help you...
I think that's an Android jb issue rather than a fault of the phone.
I use the memory swap now, I used to use directory bind, and it works perfectly

It's a ROM related issue (JB). I'm using Clean Master(App), which allowes to move at least some apps to external SD.
im using a custom rom with the memory swap baked in. But im pretty sure this is the mod/guide that im using
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2036796
it is really good and fools the phone into using your sd card as your internal memory so no need to swap on a per app basis.
enjoy.

Thanks for pointing me to this. Can you verify for me as I cant seem to find it. Can this be used on my stock rom rooted? Or will I need to flash a new rom? Id really like to keep it stock as much as possible. Dont mind if the trash has been removed though.
I know the thread says you need a rom and kernel that supports initD, but I dont know if this does?
Also, the initial thread indicates it needs to be a international version, mine is a US from verizon. Will this still work?
Lastly, im assuming I will need to whipe my phone and start fresh?
Again thanks for all the help with this!
I'm not a hundred percent sure to be honest. But I would expect it to work on a stock rooted phone.
You would need to do a complete wipe and I think it says in the op that you're better off using the mod as soon as you do a fresh install
However, seeing as you are with Verizon I would really advise you to Flash the rom I use, Which is the Jedi rom.
It comes with some trash removed, some nice eye candy, the swap already cooked in and the new kernel is giving standby battery performance of 1% an hour.
But if you do then I suggest you wait for version 18 which is due any day.
Good luck

Looking at paranoid android. Can you link me to the thread for the ROM you are using? Id like to look at it as well.
Sure. In fact version 18 is now up. I'd highly recommend it.

Give it a try and post in the thread. The community there are very friendly and helpful.
Good luck either way.

I appreciate it man. Thats the one frustrating thing about this community in large you cant get anyone to answer your question, or they just assume you are supposed to know as much as they do. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer my question.
Has the download link been pulled? Not seeing it?
http://d-h.st/T2z
Yeah it got pulled but they are getting it up and running again the link is on page 944 it above for ease.
It'll be on the main op shortly.
No worries on the Help I don't know much but what I do know I try to share lol.
Let us know how you get on
Edit - if you're in no mad rush might be better to wait until the link appears in the main op.
