No problem. Although if you lock it you will have to unlock it again to flash another rom/kernel and unlocking it wipes your phone so its just as easy to leave it unlocked.
don't re-lock it. You'll wipe your device unlocking it again. Just leave unlocked there's no reason not to.

The problem with that is I already have my phone unlocked. I just didn't get a chance to root it. I don't want to go through unlocking it again and having it erase my phone. I just want to be able to root it. That's all.
I may add that my nexus is the unlocked GSM UK version.
Rooting without deleting everything would be better.

Carrier unlocked and bootloader unlocked are different.
You need to unlock the bootloader (which wipes the phone) in order to root it...

I'd recommend starting those backups Protip: if you use dropbox sync in Titanium Backup Pro, you can actually back up your user apps on your old phone (provided you have wifi or your old phone is still active) and restore them on your Gnex. Make sure you do this ONLY for user apps, though.

Can I flash a kernel on my mobilephone (r800a) rooted/locked bootloader? Is there any other way that I can do it? (Cannot unlock bootloader btw)
You can't. You need an unlocked bootloader for that.

Really?? Don't kernel flashing is save 4 both locked & unlocked bootloader?? As far as i knw u need an unlocked bootloader to flash an ics rom.

Let me make this clear (Hopefully),
In order to flash ANY ROMs, you have to either boot into or flash the custom recovery (Such as TWRP or Clockworkmod). In order to do that, you need to unlock your bootloader. If you unlock your bootloader, you will void your warranty. SO the answer is yes.
HOWEVER, If you EVER need to send it to Samsung, you just need to flash the stock ROM, radio, etc (If you ever need to go back to stock, Efrant has an amazing thread about it), and then just re-lock your bootloader. Then, you'll get your warranty back. Beauty of Nexus devices if you ask me.

No.. You need to root your phone first. Read through the different threads before attempting anything so you don't ruin your phone. I would start with the FAQ.

Sim unlocking is separate from rooting. It's got nothing to do with it.However, unlocking the boot loader does. Many devices require you to unlock your bootloader to install custom firmware after rooting.

you obviously have no idea what you're saying/doing. i don't recommend you root or unlock your device, at least until you read and understand what you're doing. jumping in headfirst so fast is not a good idea. nobody wants to possibly end up with such an expensive paperweight.
3 Questions regarding unlocking bootloader
1. Is there a reason why do we unlock bootloader for the Nexus7 (2013)?
We can use custom kernels etc, but anything else?
2. Any implications of unlocking bootloader? I understand for Sony, if you unlock bootloader, you will lose DRM keys, X-Reality, Bravia Engine etc.
How about for Nexus 7 (2013)?
3. Can I still root without unlocking bootloader?

You're welcome. I can't think of any disadvantage to unlocking the bootloader on the Nexus 7. Even if you need to return it under the warranty, you can relock the bootloader. With an unlocked device, you can unroot/reroot and flash custom ROMs. I ran my Nexus 7 stock unrooted for a few days, but then unlocked and rooted. I backed up my stock 4.4.2 system, and then flashed Paranoid Android, PA Gapps, and Supersu.

You can't flash some of the best roms out there, including cyanogenmod or paranoidandroid. For stock based roms should be fine without it.
Don't unlock if you are not going to install custom room, not worth the trouble

Can't root a Nexus 7 without unlocking the bootloader first either. If stock is fine for you then leave it locked. Otherwise fastboot oem unlock.
