[Q] Force EVDO Rev0? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hey everyone, I'm not sure if it is possible, but does anyone know of a way to force the modem to use EVDO rev0 instead of revA?
I'm noticing on my speed tests that I am getting faster speeds at my house when the network is shown as connected to rev0 rather than revA.
Thanks

i notice the same

If your talking about using 1x instead of 3G I have noticed that as well, there just isnt a simple way of doing it. You can try ##debug# in your dialer, type in your MSL, go to others select HDR/1x selection, then select CDMA only mode then press ok then you will always be on 1x

hmmm.. good observation

Rev0 and 1x are not the same plus when 3g roaming it uses rev0 too
Sent from my Unnamed 2.0.1 EL29 powered Galaxy S2 brought to you by Sprint

Yeah I'm not talking about 1x/3G, I'm just referring to 3G. I remember on my old Touch Pro 2 there was a way to disable revA, but I can't find it on this phone.

That's interesting I never new about that.

[Q] Using 3G and 4G at the same time?

Has anyone been looking into running the 3G and 4G radios simultaneously?
Aside from the benefit of having an additional 1-2MB/s, I get very frustrated when I am in the middle of downloading something and I come into a 4G area. Since the phone will always choose 4G over 3G, the connection resets. I would love to have a way to keep the path available to the app using it.
I guess the same problem exists when Wifi is on and the phone connects to wifi while downloading over 3g or 4g.
Can this be done?
I also would love to see a dev pick this up. It could save my marriage...
great idea. Being able to simultaneously use them and multithread downloads would be awesome.
I'd be happy if someone could fix the transition from 3g to 4g and vice versa. Nothing like downloading a file from your phone and then you lose 4g and it loses the entire session and has to be redownloaded.

That's going to be unlikely, as 3G and 4G are separate networks operated by separate providers (Clear vs Sprint). That's why I want to keep the 3G connection alive.

I could be wrong but I think sprint just resells clear wimax and calls it america's first 4g network.

When connecting to 4g or Wifi the 3g radio never really shuts off. The data part of the radio goes to sleep while the voice part remains active to send or receive calls or txts.
The 3g data service going to sleep when connected to the others is by design because it is slower than the other two services.
If you don't want the connection to reset turn 4g and wifi off, and only turn them on when you need the greater data speed. (this will also save your battery)
Also another solution is using one of the location based apps that will turn those on and off based off gps location.
Its not that i don't want to use 4g, i wish i could but its not reliable enough. If i have a large download, I'd like it to stay on the reliable network, but i still want to use the fast network.
I agree that the 3g network is still available, I'm hoping there is a way to force a static route over the 3g when needed.

[Q] Is there a way to set your Evo to run on Evdo(3g) (##3282#?)

My phone keeps going from 1xrrt to 3g(3g roaming area/rural) I've tried all PRLs same results. So I heard about the ##3282# settings. within this is there a way I can put Evdo only ? Kinda noob at this so I'll ask before going ahead
Update: I went ahead did the 3282 number and ESPT mode pops up. I choose Edit. Then i clicked on Evdo and HDR ONLY instead of Automatic. Now when I check to see what network I'm on it says Evdo_A wooo. but still it's only 1 or 2 bars. So I guess the reason why it drops from 1x to Evdo is because the weak signals? but Verizon map shows they have FULL 3g coverage here.(philadelphia MS) Owell I guess I'll play around with more settings and see what I come up with, if you have any help that would be great for me.

[Manual PRL Update] better voice, moar! 3g! for rooted and non-rooted devices

Super slow data speeds?
Poor voice coverage?
Try a custom PRL
Custom PRL files
if you live in an area where you only get 1x this mod will work for you
I use 0001.PRL attached at bottom. it works best for me.
Notice: Custom Prl's will force you to roam causing mostly all data to be roaming. if you use more that 2 gigs a month this hack may not be good for you as you may get booted off their network for to much roaming.
I put together a guide on how to manually change your prl on the epic touch. This will work with rooted and non rooted devices.
For windows users only.
First you need your MSL code.
1. go to the market and install terminal emulator
2. Type ‘’getprop ril.MSL’’ this command is case sensitive so make sure it’s typed correctly.
3. Take note of the 6 digit output number.
or
1. Call sprint and tell them you want your MSL number to do a data reset or some BS story like that. They will usually give it to you. If they don’t hang up and call back until you get someone that will.
2. Make sure you write down the number.
Now on to installing the software and drivers.
1. Download, and install the QPST application
2. Download, and install the Samsung drivers
3. Make sure USB debugging unchecked. Menu>settings>applications>development
4. On the dial pad dial ##8778# and select all. Click home
5. Plug in your device and let everything install.
6. Check the ‘’USB tethering’’ ox under menu>settings>wireless and networks>tethering. This should install a few things needed to create a com port.
7. Open up device manager on your computer. Check to see if you have a tab called ‘’Ports (COM & LPT)’’
8. Take note of what your com port number is. Should say ‘’ SAMSUNG mobile modem diagnostics serial port’’ Mine was 9 yours will most likely be different.
Now let’s change your PRL
1. Open up ‘’QPST Configurations’’ on your computer Start>All Programs> QPST> QPST Configuration.
2. Make sure you are on the ‘’ports’ tab and click ‘’add new port’’
3. Look for the port number that you got from device manager
4. If it’s not there uncheck ‘’ Show Serial and USB/QC Diagnostic ports only’’ if it still doesn’t show unplug usb and restart phone and computer.
5. After you add the correct comport click ok.
6. Now highlight the com port and click ‘’Start Clients” on the top of QPST and open Service programming.
7 .in the screen that opens you should see the phone name FFA6550-ZRF6500, the phone number should be wrong but that’s ok. Select it and click ok.
8. Click the ‘’Roam’’ tab and browse for the .PRL file you wish to load to your phone
9. Click write to phone. QPST will now ask you for the ‘’service programming code’’ this is where you type the MSL code
10. Your phone will automatically reboot and you should be on the PRL you flashed.
11. To check menu>settings>about phone> status check the PRL version. it should match the prl number that you flashed.
12. down load Netmonitor from the market this will tell you the carrier you are roaming on, in my case its sprint, and the network type, mine is EvDo rev.A! :-D
13. Don't forget to add a check to ''USB debugging'' in menu>settings>applications>development otherwise some applications like titanium back up wont work.

For those people don't know, it force you to roam on Verizon network
OP please include a warning about using this PRL and possible related issues to it.
There was a thread like this for the Evo when it launched, and if I recall correctly, it wasn't even worth it. Barely worked for anybody. Connection was very flaky.
Hopefully this is different though. I'll give it a shot after I root.

Yes. Use this PRL very very very carefully. You can, and will, be kicked out of your contract if you use this PRL exclusively and talk a lot and/or consume a light-to-moderate amount of data.
You've been warned.

Like how do you go back to the original?
Is this different than roam control?
I'd like to be able to force roam during certain situations... but not 24x7

To get back to normal update your PRL as you normally would. This is different from roam control in that it puts you on Verizon/Alltel towers exclusively and instead of forcing roaming which would be at 1X it is full-speed 3G.
It works very well, especially if you are in a congested or low-signal area. It has helped me out on a number of occasions.
That said, be warned. This isn't something to play around with if you don't understand what is going on.
Roaming costs Sprint money and they will happily give you the boot for costing them too much money. Typically, but not always, they will send you a letter or call you before cancelling your contract. 1000 minutes/300mb is the guideline to go by. Plenty of people have gone far beyond that without a peep from Sprint but I wouldn't risk it...
...unless you want out of your contract.
Thanks. I get it now

the PRl version.
if you flashed 0001.prl that what it should say.
Anyone can confirm if it can roam on pcs band with prl 11115. Since the og epic would not do evdo roam on pcs band.
Can someone post some speed test results? I want to see if they have improved. Thanks.

I'm curious to see some speedtest results.. This is intriguing, I wouldn't mind swapping the PRL at the beginning of the month until I hit ~200MB of 3G data usage and then 'updating' to the Sprint PRL for the remainder of the month. My 3G speeds here are horrible, I left Sprint last summer and at the time 3G speeds weren't bad at all.. now I'm back a year later and I'm getting 10-15kBps.. unacceptable! When I can get 4G signal the speeds are usually between 150kBps-1,000kBps (very acceptable) but most of the time the signal doesn't penetrate buildings at all.
Sprint kicking someone off of their network because of the excessive roaming would be a slap in the face in my opinion.. if they upgraded their network then we wouldn't have to be putting matters into our own hands!
In areas where there is no Sprint 4G coverage but there is Verizon 4G would doing this make it so you'd pick up Verizon's 4G signal?

have you tried removing the proxy settings?
Here's what I've experienced:
3G Sprint Proxy Enabled: About 600Kb/s
3G Sprint Proxy Disabled: About 1000-1200Kb/s
3G Verizon (with a verizon phone, droid x): about 500Kb/s
So basically I get better speeds with sprint .. unless i'm in a place that roams

I found 11115 prl on the epic forums, which is supposed to let you use 3g when roaming on Verizon. I have latest Roam Control and when I use roam only, I still get 1X speeds. Anyone else experiencing this?

Sprint Galaxy Nexus Network settings??

I was just wondering what network settings Sprint users are you for the best signal?? What I mean is what preferred network type are you using. I have noticed since I roam at home mine is mostly on unknown but a fresh boot up of stock starts on GSM/cdma auto prl. But I get the best signal when I change it to cdma auto prl. On GSM/cdma auto prl I'm roaming but I don't get any bars and data connection turns on and off but cdma auto prl I get at least one bar in and out but data stays connected and all my texts and calls come straight through. On any other setting its no telling when I'll receive a notification could be hours or days long as I'm home. But I have noticed that having it on cdma auto prl I get slower speeds like it picks evdo rev: 0:7 and fluctuates between that rev A and 1x. There is another setting in a different menu I can't really remember what it's called I forgot the dialer code to get to the menu I think it's like ehrpd or something like that. Any help or opinions greatly appreciated I think there are settings that are making this phone so slow on data my Photon is a lot faster on 3g than my nexus but Motorola will lie about your signal unless you know better but its always got a stronger signal and faster connection. One more question does a kernel have anything to do with good or bad signals I see my phone acts different with different kernels like stronger signal faster connection and vice versa.
Thank you

Is it possible to prevent the phone from using 1X?

Way too often do I see the phone using CDMA/1X instead 3G, is it possible to force the phone to only use 3G? Seems kind of silly when Verizon offers also 4G phones that they would even bother with anything less than 3G nowadays.
Yeah boss its under settings > mobile networks. I don't see it on Paranoid Android but cm7 and I think cm9 has cdma only options

Yulp, one would lose voice & SMS functionality - and/or be dealing with lots of missing calls, voice mails & unhappy folks trying to reach you ...
LOL, I would LOVE to have 3G signal - despite all the commercials about 4G/LTE on our Fios TV everyday - at home, it still meant taking our phones 5 blocks over to pickup 3G CDMA. With backup device roaming on AT&T, no problems whatsoever on GSM/3G and 4G's - if calls aren't dropped inside the house, LOL.
With all the tweaking, kernels & various Roms floating out there, the best we can manage is -85 dBm signal but mostly bouncing around, so 2G is all we get on my grandfathered UNL 3G data plan - running WiFi almost exclusively on a 30/25 fiber line.
It obviously depends on what ROM you are running, but in my CM9 by aeroevan I go to mobile networks and pick LTE/CDMA and that works usually.
