<SOLVED> Connecting to PC via USB - Wildfire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, Ive originally posted this elsewhere but got no answers.
When i connect my wildfire to my laptop and press "Turn on USB storage" my phone instantly reboots.
After many hours of research I have come to the conclusion that its because i have system apps on the SD card and when i try to connect the phone to the laptop it wants access to the SD card which is already used so it causes it to restart as it mounts the SD card.
Correct me if im wrong as i am far from knowledgable on this subject!
Anyway to move the system apps to the internal storage so i can connect because it means i cant change roms or add music etc.
Thanks in advance!

There are apps in the store that can dual mount the sd card. Should solve it if that's what is causing the problem.

actually it can be noob question instead of constructive reply, but why the hell do you have system apps on sdcard, especially one which can cause what you said??
system partition and apps are not called system only for funyes, you can try to move some and watch if it works or what will happen, but i cant find any reason to do so...
reducing the amount of data (which actually means reducing size of your rom) on /system partition makes sense when you want to use custommtd for more space on /data partition for additional apps, what is usually done to use minimally or completely avoid app2sd(logic says it should also be slower, than having it in phone memory)
btw this way i am running cm7(150mb /system 10mb /cache and the rest about 300mb for /data) and erwins cm9(190 10 cca 260) and without few games i woudnt even need app2sd...
just my opinion and experience

I think they are on the sd card anyway because when I unmount it in the settings the phone also goes into a reboot

Solved! Downloaded the Dual mount widget from the play store and its solved the problem!
Many thanks!

Unmounting SD card when Apps2SD is used

Hi all,
My Desire is rooted and running Leedroid 2.2a with an ext3 partition on my SD card for my apps and cache folders, using the default apps2sd setup with the ROM.
I recently had to re-flash my phone because lots of installed apps went missing; some of them had odd names (the com.android.x.x names) and then it got stuck in a boot loop because it couldn't read the SD card until I formatted it, well actually I had to destroy the ext3 partition. Now I wonder if its because the apps folder is on the SD card/ext3 partition and if I connect the phone to my PC to copy stuff to/from in disk mode it un-mounts the SD card, losing the apps folder and the cache folder.
So far, since flashing, I haven't installed half as much crap on my phone, or dismounted the SD card, but I am worried that it will start to cause problems with the phone if I need to connect via USB/disk drive mode.
Has anyone else had these problems, or know of a 'safe' way to unmount the card without corrupting apps?

It shouldn't corrupt your EXT partition if you mount USB on your device.
AFAIK, if you mount USB, it will only mount the FAT32 partition, the EXT partition will still be available to Android.
Problem has occurred again. My battery went flat on Saturday so the phone turned off. Plugged it in on Saturday night, turned it on, and it stays at the "HTC" white background green text screen.
If I remove the card it boots fine. I mounted the SD card in Ubuntu and I can use the fat32 partition on the card, but the ext3 partition is empty, although if I right click on it and go to properties, it shows that there is 130mb in use on the partition. I cant do anything to the partition because Ubuntu throws some odd error about not being able to mount the partition because its in use, or some other paradoxical scenario...
Annoyed now. Anyone know of a fix? should I copy all the stuff I want off the card, repartition using gparted and try again? I used the ROM Manager app on the phone to prepare the card before. Could it have a bug?? the Ext3 partition is at the end of the drive space, after the fat32 partition. Should I make it the first partition?
Bit of a bump, but it seems I'm not the only one with this issue. Any help is appreciated...
I don't have the card with me now cos I'm at work so I cant do any more tests or try and find a solution.
Have you been able to find a resolution for this, I'm having this exact issue. While I suspect a reformat would address, I don't want to have to deal with this weekly.
No worries, you can mount them fine. but if you take out your sd card out of the phone and turn the phone on, it would turn on and go in a bootloop. but that was just for me.
This is used to happen to me. Stuck in HTC logo on white background. It turned out to be that my sd card was bad partitioned it corrupted.
I fixed it by destroyed all partitions and created only fat32. Then put it back to HTC Desire and had ROM Manager created new ext3 partition.

I have been facing this issue ever since I started trying a2sd+ roms. I created a 1GB ext3 and apps will start disappearing every now and then. If I shutdown the phone and boot it again, then many apps will go missing.
I tried reformatting the sd, wipe and reinstall the rom but no use. Apps will keep disappearing on every reboot. At times all the installed application will be corrupted. i.e they will be listed in application manager as com.android.xx.xx with no icon. Some apps will have the icon and if i select them it will say the application is no longer available.
I have tried different roms with a2sd+ and still have the issue
I have tried different methods of partitioning.. Using acronis disk director in windows, using rom manager, using ubuntu live cd etc.. still the issue is present.
What makes it difficult is that sometimes the ext3 partition gets corrupted.. sometimes the whole sd ext3+fat32 gets corrupted, and I could not find what's wrong.
One final thing left to check is to try with a different sd card. If even that fails, then I have to go back to non-a2sd+ rom and live with low internal memory
Anyone faced this issue and found a solution, please share... I would be grateful...

[Q] 2 Primary partitions for link2SD card? MiniTool not working!

MiniTool partition wizard is not working on that, every time I try to make 2 partitions setting them primary, MiniTool automatically changes the 2nd one to logical, after applying the changes. Plus, now every time I connect my SD card it shows the same old partitions, but in my phone it is only one partition (I erased the card through my Wildfire S utility after not working 2 primary partition thing).
I connected it with phone, and memory card reader, same result. Plus when I connect it to computer by card reader/phone and try to format it, it says it is write protected.............
I want to make to partitions on one SD card for link2SD app of android. What to do?????

Are you using memory card adapter? if yes make sure it's not locked(write protected). (The sliding button on it.)

I broked the lock slide but result was same.................Anyway I found another way to do it,,,,,,,Clockworkmod.
But now new problem is, one app google map, it is converted to user app and then linked to SD card, but the phone is still showing that it is taking up 22 mb space in the internal memory...........(((((
Internal memory - linked apps: Google Currents, Google Maps
I find (using the wonderful little app DiskUsage) that some linked apps still use the internal memory for data that they cache.
Google Currents was the worst offender (a varying difference of approximately 50 megs in the internal storage when I install/uninstall), so I have uninstalled it, but have it backed up. This is on the off-chance that its data storage, is in the future, given the option to choose the SD card instead.
Maybe I shouldn't be linking all the files (exclude the cache linking option for these apps in Link2sd?) of these apps. Any further advice on that would be great! I tried hard to find the answer elsewhere. I'll experiment in the meantime, as I do like Currents!
I would tolerate the Maps usage as for me it can be crucial information needed in low data coverage areas ...
SE Arc S
Rooted, Locked Bootloader
Xperia Ultimate HD2 with Link2sd (ext2)
I have the same problem and solved !!!!!!
Like you,I was so irritated in that situation,
I am replying this post for everyone because i know you are reading this post with huge headache.so the solution is simple as i tried and worked for me
The problem we facing is,we lost the fat32 supporting file,we need to fix into it,so for this i was tried putting the memory card in other mobiles and tried it,in the last attempt putting in nokia mp3 phone and i did format.
Finally it fixed me the problem much more than tried formatting in android mobiles
So i recommend you to format with any java keypad mobiles which has the compatibility to run memory cards. if you have,Because it is working on basic platform.it will insert the basic necessity of sd card such as fat32etc...,in your card.If its not working try formatting with many mobiles as you can.Definitely it will work.:good:
can anybody solve this problem? does minitool partition wizard be helpful? I met the same problem now, and i dont know how to do because now there is not much person using Android.

[Q] How do you guys deal with the limited (2GB) USB Storage?

Hi all,
I know that Samsung likes to mount the external SD Card at "sdcard/external_sd" and uses it's built in space as the "SD Card" when viewed by the OS/applications for the purposes of installing applications/data.
For a phone which is powerful enough to play some decent games which have large data files this is a huge problem because the USB Storage fills up after installing only a couple of games with no option to move the data to the real external SD Card.
I have tried "Directory Bind" and it actually does work with the stock ROM, until I plug the phone into the computer and mount USB Storage. The phone barely enters USB Storage mode and right away the directory binding is broken until the phone is rebooted, with the SD Card sometimes not remounting on its own.
My question is, is there a way to install applications to the external SD Card? Is this a problem with the custom ROMs like Arco's CM9 or any of the derivatives? Is it to do with the partition structure? Can this be fixed or are there other applications I could try besides Directory Bind?
Thanks

You could try to move the apps you installed to the external SD by using app2sd. Download it from the playstore

Hi there, if you're running a custom rom like cm9, you have a really useful option.....
Goto settings>>storage press menu and select storage configurations....then 'check' the box.....this basically swaps the storage volumes and uses your external SD as internal storage.....you will have to reboot your phone so that the change takes effect.....
CM9...I don't HAVE to.....I just.....can..
Swapping your storage, it is the simple way to deal with that kind of this problem.
And just for your information, using the directory bind will preventing your phone to enter the deep sleep, so it will drain your battery much faster than you don't use that application.

App2SD doesn't work well for me on stock ROM, moves data from USB storage to... USB storage
Thanks switched from modified GB 2.3.6 based ROM to CM9, as much as I hate CM9 performance wise it's working exactly as described, all application data is now on external SD card! Thanks
Thanks you guys, this has been of HUGE help to me seeing I'm new to all this android stuff. I'm really glad I loaded CM9 on my phone now, finally I can use my 16gb sdcard easily
Just one last question, now that my external_SD is actually my SD_card,if I were to restore to factory settings or return to my default ROM,will all the data on my external sdcard (SD_card) be wiped out?

Nope it won't. If you wipe data and restore factory settings your sd card won't be deleted. Unless you format your external sd which is refering to your sd card

It won't get deleted because it's just symbolic mounting location placed within the phones file system but it doesn't hurt to keep a rolling backup of your SD card somewhere else (once when changing ROMs on my Xperia Play I lost about 2/3 of all photos on my SD card, it was a freak random bug but was devastating).
Also note that different ROMs store photos from the camera in different locations which can be a bother for some gallery applications (having to go through folders). If you're using the default setting of storing photos from the camera or music/downloads on the internal 2GB "SD card" then this data will be erased with a factory reset
With GB, I installed Bionic Cow 2; out-of-the-box it swapped Internal & External SD, allowing me to use my 16GB Class 10 microSD as "sdcard".
For good measure, I partitioned the microSD into 2; the 1st as FAT32, the 2nd as ext2. Then I installed Link2SD to help clean up the 'internal storage'.
With ICS (CM9), it's much easier. After *completely* wiping the phone ( /system, /data, /cache, internal SD, and external SD), after 1st boot of CM9, I go into System Settings and swap the internal / external SD, and immediately rebooted.
On CM9, I *still* partition my microSD to enable Link2SD.
Keeping 'internal storage' less than 50% used makes my phone zooooooooooom

Internal Disk & MMC Gone !!

Firstly Happy New Year to all on the forum, my phone has just had a disaster can anyone help please.
My AT&T Glide crashed today in town, and on reboot I couldnt see the MMC 32gb card, which I thought had been corrupted. Well it was, when I put in another 16gb card the phone wont mount it, then I noticed that the internal usb disk isnt mounted either or even recognised ??
Hows this happened and can it be restored simply do I have to download a new dev rom and re flash from the 1.18gb I have left shown on phone as I cant put it to MMC card.
My phone has custom firmware Osimood.0122.RUXKJ5 which has been great up until this MMC sd card crash.
Any help gratefully received as its my work phone and I need it up and running asap.
Many thanks
Paul
Can you boot into cwm? I assume you have it installed. See if you can access the internal sd card from there. If yes then most probably a simple flash will fix everything, or even a nandroid backup assuming you have that as well. If no its not seen in CWM, then I do not know someone else will have to chime in, seems like something is very wrong for it to suddenly lose its memory. Could be some type of controller our buffer that went.
Sent from my SGH-I927 using xda app-developers app
Thank you for your reply, I went in to CWM and can see an update file on a the sd card so technically if I get the Osimood zip file I could reinstall the system but I am unsure which disk it is seeing this file from I dont think its the external MMC or internal USB so how to I get the file on a storage area that the phone can see.
On the phones settings, under storage pane, USB now has the option to Format USB storage, this has appeared since mounting the system files etc within CWM as most were set to unmounted, but it would not let me mount the sd card as far as I could tell from CWM, when I go to update system menu the option to install update.zip but which disk is this as I could not mount any disk from CWM to view mounted files such as directories etc.
I am in the process of recovering the MMC card that the phone crashed so not all is lost, but I am pretty sure there were files in the Glides USB storage that I would like to save if possible, if I format this storage I am unlikely to recover whats on it, but would a straight reinstall of Osimood format this disk anyway ?
One last question does anyone know what the option "download" is on the power off menu on Osimood it is along side recovery, reboot and power off etc.
ATB
Sorry one last thing I have noticed, when in storage settings SD card has the option to mount when selected it says preparing sd card but nothing actually happens the notice just goes and I'm back to square one, USB has no option in the menu to mount just to format.
I hope that the above is significant in what has happened here.
Thanks
Boot into CWM, enable "mount USB storage", then use a PC to check the internal storage for filesystem problems.
If that doesn't fix it, next step is to factory reset I'm afraid.
Hi everyone, thank you so much for all the assistance I have been at work and therefore forced to format the internal disk which once down the ext sd card became visible again ??? once reinstalling the apps again all is well again, my biggest issue is that all the sd card app back ups failed me as it wiped the ext sd card the internal was wiped on reformat so had to start again.
Note to self back up apks to computer is much safer the ext sd card.
Just hope it doesnt happen again the apk shopper was the culprit that crashed it all.
Many thanks brilliant forum.

Raid sd's?

Is it at all possible, to raid the internal and external sd's to act as one hard drive? I don;t like the fact they are separated, i would rather have them as one single hard drive.
i have never heard of this on a Phone with Sdcard, closes thing to that would be Apps2sd card, which you partition the sdcad to ext4?(correct if wrong) and phone sees it as internal phone storage, which gives you a bigger amount to store data/ and still have a fat32 partition

I could be missing something, but to me it looks like if you use any other filesystem than vfat (fat32), Android will claim its a blank memory card...
I tried both Ext2 and Ext4, have to mount it manual (which is working), tried updating the vold.fstab but it doesnt seem to work with other filesystems than factory default.
Would it be correct to assume that Android has its own way of mounting things rather than using the already existing functions in the kernel ?
If so, then it would probably be possible to make things like software raid but android would not be able to start it nor mount it during startup (vold.fstab)
Maybe someone can make sense of all this...
i know , there are some lines in the build.prop for a second sd card. maybe , changing does those lines to no . could make one sd for the system
maybe android 4+ need its cuz all of the new htc phones have them
i know this is off topic . on jmz rom totemc2 have the setting disappear from the try menu and quick settings . mine did
