Okay so ive had my Nexus since Nov last year. Ive been reading about people getting fast data speeds 10Mbs+. But the fastest ive ever seen is 4Mbs. Tried changing to the "phone" APN, but that only helped with ping time.
Can anyone in New York City with AT&T chime in with their setup or suggestions on getting better speeds?

Oh okay just trying to make sure im not messing out on some speed. BTW are you using the default APN?
Did you test in the middle of the night to eliminate congestion? Then try different locations to see an average.

Yeah it would be nice to have that kind of speed but I personally don't really need it. For the most I just want web pages to load fast. I don't stream much video at all.
Also how much is your bill on verzon? I'm paying $120 after tax for my nexus and my girls iPhone 4s. That's pretty damn good if you ask me

My ATT phone supports 4G frequencies and I have ATT at the moment but I am lucky to get 1MBps because ATTs network sucks in most large sities. The fact HE didn't get those speeds doesn't mean someone else won't. Speed testing is a VERY inexact science. Someone here on XDA posted ~6MBps speeds with the T989 on AT&T.
that's probably why they went with LTE on the skyrocket model instead of HSPA+
I didn't reach more than 1.3 mbps regardless where I was at...same speeds that I reached with my iPhone..at the same spots I was reaching 5mbps
I don't think higher speeds than 3g can be achieved, however it beats having edge like it usually happens when we use one of their phones

the only way to know if its a "good" speed is if you can compare to a different phone on the same network near you, or another phone, swapping your SIM into it to test.
What speeds do you all see on the Galaxy Nexus? I am considering getting this, and using it on T-Mobile. I replied to some other posts about this, but didn't really get firm responses. I have a HTC Amaze, and see speeds in the 18Mbps area, and 3 - 6 in a bad coverage area. The Amaze supports HSPA+ 42, and the Galaxy Nexus HSPA+ 21. Will I see 18Mbps on the Galaxy Nexus, or 7 - 8 like most people post. Of course, T-Mobile is the only U.S. carrier with HSPA+ 42.

Yeah, it is. I haven't rooted/put a custom ROM onto my device, tho so maybe doing that might help the speeds. I have been kind of dissatisfied with T-mobile in that aspect. The funny thing is that they sent me a text message survey a few weeks ago asking me if i would recommend t-mobile to friends, to which I responded very unlikely. Yesterday I got a phone call from t-mobile trying to get more information out of me about why I was dissatisfied. I tried to answer as best I could, and in the end, they gave me a $25 credit. I still keep thinking of things that I wish I would have said to them. Like for example whenever I go to a place where there are tons of people like at a concert or something, I will have no chance of calling or texting. My phone says I have signal, but there is no signal.
I read that even when t-mobile jumps on the lte band wagon in 2013, that our gs3 phones will not be able to take advantage of the new speeds (what a drag). I'm not sure if this is really the case, but I posted the link to the article below.
http://www.galaxys3newsblog.com/t-mobiles-samsung-galaxy-s3-to-miss-lte-yet-another-dissappointment/
One thing you have to remember you always want to buy a phone that works right now for you not a phone that would work better in the future, I'm happy with hspa+ and by the time I get lte from tmobile I might have another phone anyways so I think I'm cool with that, it bee discuss in another topic too
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
This is true. I just thought that I would post this for those who didn't have the benefit of reading the other post. For those that don't change their phones often and intend on keeping the gs3 for some time, I thought that this was good information to help them make a well informed purchase. I hope this helped anyone that didn't know and wants to buy a gs3.
My HSPA+ speeds are consistanly faster than my friends Verizon LTE. Plus HSPA+ uses dramatically less battery. Heres my speeds in Detroit.

Same here in San Diego. Verizon was fast out of the gate but they heavily over-subscribed their network and now they are lame. AT&T is the crazy fast at the moment but I expect them to be in the same boat as Verizon this time next year.

Practicly yes on stock 4g shows when you connected to umts(3g), hspa and hspa+(t mobile calls this 4g cause it could go up to 42mbps) but if you changed yours to stock look ( aosp) you will see your phone going at all of them and won't stay connected to one at all times, you might no notice because their 3g is not crazy slow where you live, I have good coverage specially where I live and work so I don't mind it

It does have LTE, just like the T-989 did, its just disabled by default. You can access this setting by opening the dialer and typing *#*#4636#*#*, and selecting radio type.

My favorite one:
Me: Hi Sprint. I get 50kbps at my house and at work what's up with your network?!
Sprint: Sir, you use 1.5gb of data a month which is quite on the heavy side so I don't believe you can be finding issue with our network.
For you guys who had the 4G, you're lucky. I am only about 35 miles from NYC and I never got the 4G. I've got (3) 4G-capable phones but I never got to use 'em.
Maybe I'll get the LTE:fingers-crossed:
Sprint is still reasonably priced for me.

Never seen any difference whatsoever coming from an Evo. I live 5.2 miles from the nearest tower, and snag about the exact same quality signal on every device I've owned in the last 3 years.
Every location is different. Here in the Denver Boulder area, most times I get between 500 1500 kb downloads based on speedtest.
I been with sprint almost ten years and this is really breaking news to me. WOW!
