Future upgrade choices... - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Here's what I've got:
1) Get Evo LTE (fugly battery door/case - whoever designed it should be fired for being an idiot) in about a week and a half,
2) Wait for SGS3 LTE (same qualcomm s4 cpu, if you believe the rumors), probably better software than htc, fewer source releases and updates. Waiting is for "Summer 2012".
3) Switch to Verizon/ATT (att sucks here) and wait for an SGS3-powered phone (not even announced yet).
4) Switch to ATT One X (available now, awesome phone, att service sucks here).

If art sucks option 3 and 4 shouldn't matter. You can't really compare the evo with the sgs3 because the us variants are always different than the international version.

According to Anandtech benchmarks, S4 is about from twice faster to similar in performance, compared to Exynos quad core in cpu benches.
Exynos seems to be about 30% faster in some gpu benches. It terms on IO ops/internal storage speed, it's a wash.
I'm definitely going with One X screen being much better than SGS3 one. I base this on having seen an ATT One X screen and GN screen. I doubt that SGS3 screen is much better than GN screen. Pentile is pentile.

Just wait till Oct Nov and buy the nexus that comes out. If anything at least you get first inline updates

All the stock/marketing pics of the Evo LTE really lead me to believe the back wasn't that bad. When I saw a live pic today from Android & Me I was REALLY dissappointed how ugly it looked. Oh well, my girl's got her's on preorder so I don't have to carry it around, plus she'll probably get a case for it anyhow.
HOWEVER... if you can complain about the back of the EVO LTE then take a look at that dumpster fire that is the SGSIII. That thing is HORRIBLE. I WILL not buy that if it looks anything like what they are showing as the international version. It looks like $hit.

1) I buy **** outright. Who checks upgrade options?
2) ET is inferior to ATT One X.
I actually picked up my balls, put them in my car and drove to the mall. I then found the ATT store. I then compared my current white ET to that white One X.
It was not even close. I felt like I was about to switch from Evo3d to ET.
In fact, it was probably a bigger difference. One X (S4 Krait) is a new gen phone.

Hey nabbed, there's nothing wrong with being a balla! If you can afford it, buy them all! The more power to you

Dumb question here, but how's the T-Mobile coverage in your area? You could get the international One X if their coverage is good enough and you don't mind the loss of LTE.
And I'm with you, I'd probably burn some cash to get the One X but instead Sprint comes out with the fugly Evo LTE.
I would wait until the SGSIII comes out for Sprint just to see how it compares with the Evo LTE and One X then decide from there. There's nothing like actually holding a phone in your hand.

I'm thoroughly confused by this article. It seems to insinuate that this is our coming SGSIII (ignore this, read it wrong) but starting at a price of $100? Seems very low ball to me. Is it possible there are two levels of the SGSIII coming to Sprint?
Okay yeah, this isn't THE SGSIII but seems to be a mid-level option. Frankly I'm not the least bit interested in mid-level phones and, like nabbed, I generally end up buying my phones at full price rather than wait for an upgrade. I've only ever successfully nabbed an early upgrade once and wasted it on the EVO 3D.

Twiz is the only reason we don't have ics.

The reason it will probably be June is because Samsung is redesigning touchwiz so the next phones to launch also have it. I even think Samsung either has to release it soon or its going to be a long time. Once the nexus is out it is too late. Once the sg3 is out its way too late.
This may be the better phone but I don't even care at this point Samsung always does this crap. It could actually go till September. Point blank I am only buying nexus phones from now on or going to another os. Plus I love how the nexus feels and looks.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
You argument is a bit premature. Last time I checked only one non nexus device has been updated and that just happened yesterday. It was a tablet too, not a phone. Other than the Nexus devices there is not one single ICS phone being sold that I am aware of. So, you can be mad a Samsung all you want. But, they aren't the one changing the OS every 6 months. There has been 19 Android updates in the 3 1/2 years Android has been available.
You are also not remembering Ice Cream Sandwich has been updated 3 times in 3 months and it still is having problems.
I wouldn't mind a nice update once in a while to keep things fresh. But, Twiz is not the only reason we don't have ICS. If that were the case these leaked roms wouldn't be floating around.
Have some faith in our awesome devs. If it weren't for them, you would be sitting on a stock rom right now.

Yeah most of us will buy a nexus. And the reason its upsetting is because April is a long time from now. And most of the Android phones are HTC and Samsung. Both of these companies are pretty slow to update.
Just watch somehow Samsung will release a phone with ics before this one gets it. Anyway wmim happy sprint is getting the nexus. My gf can have this phone and my dad can get the nexus s which also has ics on it.

Well to buy a GN is a bad move you will be losing much more then gaining.
The GS3 lte should drop in August that will blow away GN
Considering all of this hype for ICS you'd think that it was about the return of Jesus or something.
Its like this with every update. Gingerbread and Froyo was the same way.
On my Epic mobile phone.
I doubt Sprint will hold back the release of ICS for sgs2. 1, If people use their upgrades then they wont have one for the galaxy nexus unless they use someone elses upgrade. 2, it has LTE which the sgs2 doesnt.

Only thing better on GN hardware wise is the display.....that's it.

G Nexus VS SGS3

Which of these 2 devices are you guys most interested in? If they both come out with LTE on Sprint and ICS of course? I personally am Wowed by the camera in our ET4G and hope that the next one only gets better ... what do you guys think?
Obviously it'll be the SGS3
GNexus is already old and barely a step up from the ET4G
I dunno it's gonna be a hard decision. Im sure the Sprint GalNex will be out much sooner.

I really would like to get one but I'm having second thoughts about paying full price for a bigger screen. I should, but doubt I will knowing my impulsiveness, wait to see if there's any problems initially like there was with this phone when it first comes out. I will also wonder what kind of specs the g3 well have and when it will be here for us. Those are the two I'm watching. Also, if the note still has a dual core snapdragon when it comes out for us, I might pass. Two steps forward with the hardware then one back with the CPU.

Very true statement. If it domes with an S4pro with the new adreno gpu that thing will be a monster. I know that Samsung will eventually integrate lte in their processors but when is the question.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Yes. Give me one with LTE and any exynos processor and I would be totally satisfied and have no need for anything else for the rest of that contract at least!
With how big the battery is, couldn't they just put an lte radio in there and have a toggle to turn it off and on like wimax? Then it would still be our responsibility to watch the battery. I could totally go for something like that as long as they kept the exynos. But do not count out the S4pro it has the upgraded gpu also with lte built on the die.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
If it came with ICS out of the box, and LTE support. Would definitely pick it up.
Because I too will be paying full price (unless I come up with a way to sweet talk an early upgrade out of someone) and since I'm not even 100% sold on getting the phone, I'm definitely going to wait awhile and see how it performs. Also the extra wait time will allow a chance for the SG3 to possibly make an appearance, that's the phone I really want.
But I'm a major gadget whore so there's no guarantee what I will or won't buy regardless the cost. lol
I don't know...I like the Note, but I would need a few things in order to lock myself in for 2 more years for it. First, LTE capability. ICS would be good, but not necessary at launch for me.
It would need an upgraded processor though. With the Evo LTE coming out and the SGS III likely to be announced sometime soon, I don't want to get stuck with a last gen processor for 2 years.
Honestly, I probably won't make a decision on my next phone until I see what Sammy has up their sleeve.

I haven't compared the actual pics and videos but essentially the s3 has the same camera as the s2, just faster and with more options. People should really take the time to read the posts in the s3 section. Many people are reporting issues that shouldn't be happening with a new phone. Many are discovering that it really is just a s2.5. It's also experiencing lots of LOS (loss of service). If you REALLY want one, it would be wise to wait until the problems get ironed out in a real update. I'm not talking about the little security update that's going to get pushed to the sprint version on sunday.

sprint is releasing an LTE version arent they? I dont think LTE will be available until 2013 in my area. I cant see knowingly upgrading to lose 4g until the phone could be almost a year old.

Maybe well worth it if you are not coming from an s2. Upgrading to the s3 means you can't upgrade to a next gen phone. Next gen phones come out in q4 for Christmas season. It's like having an iPhone 4 and upgrading to a 4s sure it's nicer and more refined, but upgrades for most aren't yearly anymore and most would just wait for a true upgrade rather than some polishing.

The 18 Month Mark Is Almost Upon Us

Well we've got a little over a month to go before we hit that magical 18 month mark and the support cycle for our beloved nexii ends. Not that that matters a whole lot, but its a milestone nonetheless. Despite the ongoing battery struggles and some awful early (and sometimes reappearing) signal issues, I have to say that I've loved this phone, and at the end of the day it really did meet most most of my expectations. It can still handle pretty much everything you can throw at it, even at 18 months old, and that's not something you can say about a lot phones at this point in their life cycles. I did hate it while we were waiting for the first official radio update and 4.04, and even then I never really stopped thinking about selling it. But from the first JB update and since, I've been a happy camper and even turned down a family member's offer to buy me a full price Note 2 or DNA.
Interested to hear what other launch day or close-to-launch day purchasers would say about if and how it has lived up to their expectations.

I have had my nexus since December 2011, not exactly launch day but that was the soonest I could get my hands on it in Canada. My experience in owning this device has been interesting. In the end I have realized what features I value more then others based on the nexus' downfalls. Some of these include radio strength, battery life, camera quality and of course software is still vital to me.
The 18 months is coming quickly upon us and our Galaxy nexus is probably only going to get one more official update and to be honest I'm fine with it, as this will give me extra reason to upgrade.

Well I've had my nexus for about 8 months or so now. I did not upgrade when it first came out and stuck with the nexus s for a bit.
Then got the note 1 for a while. Then finally came over late last year cause I got tired of waiting on Samsung to release jellybean for the note 1.
Anyway... I can easily say this has been the best experience I've had with any handset. Never been happier.
Jellybean solved a lot of problems with the fluidity and speed of the already excellent android experience.
The handset itself is still a beauty too. I never get tired of those sexy curves and all clean black front end with no buttons!
The handset still runs well with no big issues. Games and apps load in an almost instant. Blazing fast still. I will keep it for a good while I think.
Will try and wait till the fall at least. See what the next nexus brings. Or that Motorola x phone.
The only thing I would change about the galaxy nexus would be more ram. It's the only small issue I have very rarely. Especially when using chrome with a few tabs open. It eats a lot of ram at times.
But all in all... This has been and still is an excellent handset. Love it

I've had mine since launch day on Verizon, and I stuck with it after the fiasco of the launch date that was delayed and delayed. I wanted the nexus experience and I have enjoyed it for the most part, but Verizon has ruined some of the experience with their late updates and such. I will be keeping this phone as long as I can since I am grandfathered into the unlimited data so I don't want to upgrade. When it comes time to get a new phone, I hope I have the option to buy a nexus.

Did google said anything about that 18 month something? I think you're all being paranoid. Go ahead and flash something coz it looks like y'all need your medication.
I thought support ends after 2 years?
I/O is coming.
And I thought support was for 2 major Android versions. Like the Nexus S.

I bought my Gnex used and I've had it about 9 months. I love the pure Google experience and it helped me survive to the end of my contract with VZW. I'm waiting to see if Google has something up their sleeve at I/O for a new Nexus phone. I'll probably go to the Nexus 4 or whatever they announce then and free myself from carrier crap. Though maybe I'll wait until my Gnex craps out first and buy a Nexus 10 to replace my aging Iconia A500. Anyway, I'm firm in the Nexus camp!
Going by past history, each nexus device is roughly supported for around 2 years, which means we might stop getting official updates at around october..

I am on my second Contract with verizon...my first 2 year contract had the OG droid, Droid X and HTC thunderbolt in there. this is the only phone i have had on the current contract. i Do have urges to get a used S3 and throw an AOSP ROM on it, but i still think i would miss my Nexus.
all of my phones, i have tried everything in my power to make it as close to a nexus device as possible....and now that i have a nexus device, i dont have to worry about it. it is always up to date, it is super smooth, i haven't run into any issues, the Community is EXACTLY what i wanted, and the phone is even more than what i wanted. a phone that is still smooth and fast 15 months after i bought it, i am simply amazed.
and this phone gets more and more exciting come these google events, because i know i will have what they announce later that day or the following one.
I've had this phone for over a year which is an eternity for me. I still enjoy it so I'm having trouble convincing myself to retire it which is good thing. Sure there's now faster phones with bigger screens and better hardware but this thing still holds its own.
My only hope now is that I accidentally break it to give me reason to replace it. Maybe then my wife will understand.

Oh man! This is exactly how I feel. I'm tempted to buy the N4, but I feel guilty because my gnex still works perfectly. Also if I pull the trigger and buy the N4, I'm going to regret the decision by the end of this year when the next Nexus comes out.
I might just get drunk one day and make the purchase and blame alcohol for the decision!

Exactly my thoughts too! If it works, why bother replacing it? I'm getting a Nexus tablet to satisfy that buying urge. I'll probably hold out until the Nextsus before I doing any phone upgrading.
