[Q] 4G LTE connection - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I can get 4G reception at my home but it occasionally drops. My wife has a 4G Xoom that never loses connection. I was rooted and running 4.0.4 radios which seemed to help the reception somewhat, but would still lose connection from time to time. I went back to 4.0.2 unrooted and woke up this morning with no connections (had to reboot to get it to connect). 3G works fine unrooted and rooted.
I am about to contact Verizon but am afraid I will be one of those who goes through 9 different phones.
Is there anything else I should try before contacting Verizon? The support on here is much better so that's why I asked here first.

Well, I had the same issue a couple of days ago. But the issue was not with the phone....it was with the signal tower. You should call Verizon and see what's going on. Sometimes there are areas where 4G signals are also weak. I spent one night at South Beverly Drive and Wilshire in Los Angeles, and I got no 4G signal whatsover. If you live by the area where there are lots of tall buildings, you probably won't get any data signals. So you might wanna check both.
My first Nexus would lose all signal at random, even if I was in an area with 4 bars of 4G. Swapping the SIM card out didn't work, so I swapped the phone out.
The new one works perfectly in a 4G area, but in a 3G-only area (like where I live), it will drop its data connection a lot. It keeps voice, but the 3G icon disappears. Switching into CDMA-only mode didn't help. Flashing the 4.0.3 radios didn't help. I use a lot of data, so I'm left wondering whether I should swap this phone out, or just give up on having a Nexus.
I don't experience any connectivity issues so far(I live in Fullerton, California), and my brother, 2 of my friends, friends' friend, my girlfriend and her little brother!
It started after the 4G outage... Could have that hurt my phone? I highly doubt it but you never know...hmmm to verizon when I get back home from vacation
EDIT: Been on CDMA and it seems to be working, low bars, but seems to be. Maybe its verizon's network where I am, ill check again tomorrow. Hope its working this is really making me sad I really do love my nexus
Could it be your modem/radio? I'm using a GSM nexus, but I had loads of signal drops on the KK1 modem till I updated to the KK6 modem

I was wondering the same thing. Mine has been sporadic since the outages while my wife's charge is rock solid. I have tried to lose a signal with her charge and it won't do it. 3g is awful on my nexus. It'll be there for a minute or two then gone. Really frustrating cause I love this phone

I've been seeing the same thing but it seems to only happen when I'm on LTE. Example...I just went out and was in a 4G coverage area with full signal. Around every 15-20 minutes I would lose all form of signal for about 30 seconds and it would come back. I've found that switching to CDMA only allows me to maintain a solid connection. During the period that I was experiencing the outages my girlfriends RAZR has been rock solid. Looks like I may be spending some time on the phone with Verizon tomorrow.

4g service but no 3g?

This JUST started yesterday...
So, yesterday at work I noticed I had no data...so I did the typical restart...still no data...I shrugged it off and went on my way. As I was driving I had data again. I use wifi at home, so when I got home I didnt notice any issues and honestly kinda forgot about it. Well on my way back to work this morning I looked at my phone...had full 4g service...all seemed well. Then I got to my office...
Now let me explain I DO have 4g in this area but honestly...its only a solid 4g outside. Its not the greatest indoors. Well in my office I only get 4g if I'm standing at the window or one "sweet" spot at my desk. So 99% of the time I'm in 3g. Well to make a long story short my 3g antenna seems to be borked. I can pull 4g fine...on lunch today I was in 4g and it was working great. However, when I'm in 3g I get zero data...my phone doesnt work in 3g only 4g.
I called verizon and they just decided to send me a new phone...
I have rooted my phone and I have put the newest radio on. That was awhile ago though. Tonight I'm going to try flashing a different radio but has anyone else had this problem?
Again I get NO 3g service only 4g. In an area where 4g is spotty thats NOT good.
Thanks!
Yes, I had the same issue. The first Nexus I had gave me spotty 4G service and never went to 3G in the couple of weeks I had it. Amazon sent me a replacement which is rock-solid. I get solid 4G coverage where I should (my wife and several coworkers have LTE phones so I know where I should) and when I don't have that 3G kicks right in.
I think you should definitely expected better results with a replacement. Good luck.
I had chosen to use 3G over 4G to save battery life. After about a week with the phone I began to notice that I can hardly ever get 3G reception any more, even though 4G reception has always been excellent. I don't think it is a problem with the phone, but rather Verizon tinkering with its network.
I was having the same problem all day today.
I switch the phone to CDMA during the day and use the office's WiFi for data. However, I noticed today as I dropped my daughter off at school after lunch that I had voice only and no data. Her school is the first tower north of my office that doesn't have an LTE radio, so I normally just get 3G.
Not today.
I drove back to the office and I was able to get data through the LTE radio, but the data connection would go dead as soon as I switched to CDMA. I thought there might be something wrong with the CDMA tower, but two of my co-workers had Thunderbolts set to CDMA only and they were having no problems getting data connections.
I talked with tech support for a good couple hours this afternoon and they had nothing for me. Eventually I flashed the leaked 4.0.3 radios and CDMA magically started working again.
Did the new radios fixed the problem, or is it just a coincidence?
Hmmm...
I have been having the same issue since yesterday. Verizon said there is no outages in the area. I had no data all the way home from CT to NY and finally when I got home at night 4G worked. 4G was working in and out on my way in so I forced CDMA to see if that worked and I have been unable to get anything since. I have a new SIM coming today, but somehow I do not think that will solve the issue.
I've noticed this too. I was turning my LTE off thinking it would use 3g, but I'm noticing now that many times I either have 4g or no data at all.

I'm having the exact same problems and registered here to see what the resolution is. I'm apprehensive to root as I am still within the 15 day return window and quite frankly for 300$ I think this is total BS. Never had a dropped call, missed or unsent text on the 3g network on my old Dinc and I've lived in the same place for 2 years.
OP- could you keep this updated on how your new device works out?
same exact thing happened to me. I'm already on my second nexus and I didn't want a refurb or to lose root. So I flash android revolution hd , used tb to delete all my apps, and hid all signs of root including deleting su. I took it to Verizon and they gave me a new sim card. It was OK for about a day then started acting up again. So I called them from my wife's phone and they had to reset my number to the network and its been fine since

What do you mean by reset your number to your network? Never heard that term before
I'm not exactly sure, some techs don't know about it. When I had my charge it had no data. So they reset my number and phone to the network and I immediately got data back

Dropping 3g- annoying 1 and 2

So I leave wifi on, and the nexus holds onto to a useless weak wifi signal sometimes before switching to 3g. Annoying #1.
When I t run off wifi, I often have 3g not activated. Often have to either reboot or toggle plane mode. Annoyance #2.
Any solutions?

Pray and wait for next official radio firmware update or burn your nexus and get iTelephone.
Move to an area with better reception. Its not the phones fault at all.

please specify which phone you have. GSM/HSPA or CDMA/LTE?
I have cdma verizon phone.
To say "move to stronger area" is not an issue. If I'm in a solid 3g are, but a weak wifi area, phone holds onto slow unusable wifi instead of solid 3g"
Have 4g off
Is there a way to have wifi only connect if over a certain strength?
Will 4.03 make 3g radio connect more reliably and quickly. Absolutely cannot use battery saving app with this phone, as when I'm using 3g, and turn phone on, either have to wait 5 mins to get mobile connection or I get the greyed out 3g

I've had the same issue. It's only happened twice where I switch off wifi and it refuses to turn on 3g, didn't think about toggling airplane mode though. I had to restart both times. I'm thinking its software, at least I hope so.

Bullschit.
This is 100% the phone's fault.
I am having this problem today. Unfortunately I have not been able to reconnect to 3G all day. 4G, fine... 3G, nothing. My two colleagues with Thunderbolts are having NO problems switching their LTE radios off and running CDMA only. My Galaxy Nexus is the only one that can't find a 3G connection.
I'm starting to hate this phone more and more every day.
If you're in an area with poor wifi, why not just turn wifi off and utilize the 3G at all times?
Same problem here. I prefer 3G to 4G for battery life. For the first week or so, no problem - now I can never get 3G, but 4G works fine. I don't think its the phone - I think its Verizon and its network choices.
Connected to wifi usually offers better battery life in my experience however weak signal kills battery so maybe keeping it on 3g is the better solution here.
Any way of you strengthening your wifi signal?

I love my gnex, but I got a microsim card adapter in the mail, so I can switch back to my bolt when I need a reliable 3G radio, until google/samsung/vzw get the radio is fixed in the gnex.
It took months before the bolt's radio problems got sorted out. I hope it won't take as long with the gnrx.

I would just turn off wifi, but when I do, it takes too long for 3g to start up...and often it doesn't start up unless switch to airplane mode

what roms are yall running?
If you're running Stock, then it's the phone's fault and you should call VZW to get it swapped out.
If not running stock, then it may be the rom at fault.

Radio Problems

Is anyone else experiencing "issues" with the CDMA radio "overtaking" the LTE radio? It's as if the CDMA radio rules over the LTE radio and decides whether or not to use 4G or 3G.
I've had to toggle LTE multiple times after it went to 3G in order to get LTE back.
noticed this as well running 4.0.2 radios, at least you get it back after toggling mine drops it altogether... but I just got my nexus today so maybe I overlooked something

I experience the same, 4G works great, until it drops to 3G. Then it seems to take forever to bump up to 4G again, but usually I have to toggle it off and then back on. A friend of mine can't get 4G to work at all, Verizon has told him it's a radio issue (odd though because they tried his sim in 3 different Galaxy Nexus devices). I'm going to try and upgrade him to the leaked 4.0.4 build this week to see if the new radios will help him, it's too nice of a phone to be stuck on 3G all the time.

[Q] LTE connectivity issues on LTE Galaxy Nexus. Flashing ICS 4.0.4 did not solve.

I bought a new GNex last week and immediately ran into bad connectivity issues when preferred network mode is set to LTE/CDMA. Basically no signal all (3G or 4G), even though I live in downtown Boston where there should be 4G. When I switch my preferred network mode from LTE/CDMA to CDMA, the 3G network works fine with no connectivity issues.
On the phone, Verizon told me that a software patch in May will fix the issue. A staffer at the Verizon store told me that I could already find the patch online and that it would solve the problem... I assumed he was talking about 4.0.4. I flashed 4.0.4 yesterday fully expecting it to solve my LTE connectivity problems but ..... no luck. I still get no signal using the LTE/CDMA setting. I can't even make or receive calls unless I switch back to CDMA.
Do I have a hardware issue? Are other people having the same problem? Should I trust Verizon and hope that the 4.0.5 OTA update fixes the problem? Is there anything I can do about it now?
I am in the same boat as you. Just got a replacement from Verizon but it had a horrible purple tint to the screen so its going back. Didn't even get to see if its better at 4g. I think its a hardware problem as I've read that some people were able to get a replacement phone that actually works.

My problem is similar. I can get 4G and use it sometimes but after a short time of data usage all my data is cut off until I reboot the phone. No calls, no nothing. I logged a ticket last night and will be calling back today for an exchange.
edit:
I stopped into the VZW store after calling customer care and getting everything all setup. They swapped out my gnex for a new one and so far my experience has been positive. I'm seeing improved signal everywhere and last night the phone didn't drop connectivity once or even get warm. The old phone would get hot to the touch in the upper left of the screen, the new one stayed cool throughout 30 app downloads with 2 bars 4g. Here's to hoping my problem is solved.
I'm getting a similar issue with connectivity dropping ice had this phone for three weeks and the signal drops terribly. At my house because I live on a mountain by a Penn state campus I know there isn't much in the way of signal because of the distance from the towers without interference. But even with being in other areas with 4g I still run into the signal dropping...I thought it was just me so it's good too know I'm not the only one having issues
