GNEX super slow!!! Help - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Okay so I have the sprint GNEX and I'm sitting here with full 3g and its taking like 2min to load anything on the internet and I also can't download anything it fails.
I ran a speed test and I'm getting 0.99 mbps download and only 0.03mbps upload? Is this normal.
Please help I feel like it was a lot faster when I got it with only like 2bars of 3g
I attached a picture bellow as you can see I have full 3g but ****ty results

Are you inside a brick or metal building? Go outside and try again. If it continues, contact sprint.

you still need to call sprint.

Okay I will I'm rooted on stock rom with latest radios and a different kernel that I just flashed could the kernel be causing slow speeds?

It does matter, especially considering the building. At the local college data works fine outside but step 15 feet in the door and even though it says you have signal, data is sloooow. Also you are saying you have "full signal" or "x many bars" but that is for phone calls not data, right? All that said, you are correct that your speeds *should be* faster than that on 3G. But I know if I had a Sprint phone in my area those would be about the speeds I would expect, not sure where you live or what kind of reception Sprint gets there, but there is not much Sprint in my neck of the woods. Is this your first Sprint phone or have you had one before to compare the speed to?

Its more likely that the radio would be the culprit.

I have had and evo 4g and evo3d and both seemed to be faster and my dads photon has like full bars but when I have only 2 my gnex loads slightly faster than him so idk I know the gnexs radios are really bad I guess this is the wat it is I hate sprint so much there signal I just awful all the time and my friends with Verizon or att will be sitting there with like full bars blazing through the web and I have like 1 bar waiting like 3min for a web page to load

i mean the upload is pretty bad, but those download speeds are completely normal for Sprint. Compare next to another device to see what's normal for that particular place. You can always go into a Sprint store and compare.

My friend's new sprint nexus is doing the same thing. He gets horrible speeds.

How to improve 3G?

Hey guys I have had my Evo for awhile now and Sprints network has great coverage BUT the 3g seems abysmally slow. For instance, I can rarely stream videos without it buffering - youtube videos on regular quality mind you. If I stand still in a place with good signal I will be fine but if I'm moving etc it is slow. I get around 100KB/s during daytime where I live and 130KB/s night time which is great but luckily I also get full signal where I am. On the go, it sucks.
Are there any ways to increase 3g speeds or is it purely network related?
Welcome to sprints idea of 3g
God's honst truth man... if thats all you get... thats all you are going to get because sprints 3g network is the worst i have ever seen. Bar none. Even little us cellular has better coverage and twice the data speeds as sprint does here in iowa.
There is no possible way for the phine or any hack to it to speed up sprints crap network.
My advise to you is to cqll sprint and plead your case, that you paid for 3g and are getting 1x rtt speeds 24/7 and politely demand a credit to your account like i do every month.
And then call back about 5 minutes later and ask to speak to the retention center because you want to cancel your service because you arpe not getting service you are paying for.
Then tell the retention persion you were thinking of getting the Airave but cant afford it and see if they will give it to you free on the basis of poor service and they typically will.
I did, and got one for when i am at work and the boss wont let me use it because it uses works internet for voice and data.

Figures... Should have went with ATT or Verizon.
I know in the old days of 3g internet hacks Sanyo phones had a data cap screen that was accessible via ##040793##. From there you could change the data rate, 144K/230K. Not sure if we have the same here but phone codes may be a place to start.
Mmmmhmmm. Just be glad you don't have the epic and are capped at 150kbps up.
I think sprint has finally gotten 2 good phones and 4g, so now they think they're the top dog and can do whatever they damn well please...it's like a cycle with them. Bad service>>>loose all of their customers>>>cheap, semi-good service>>>get customers back>>>become assholes again>>>loose their customers...

Well Verizon has amazing android phones for one. There is a data cap for ATT which is true but no cap for Verizon. You know now that I think about it I might do the force roam hack on my Evo and see if if I get better 3g speeds.
I have no idea what any if you are talking about, I get better 3g speeds on Sprint then I ever did with any other carrier I've had.

I wish I could get speeds that fast consistently. Actually what you are getting is right about on par for 3g. That's prob the avg speed one would expect to get. There are higher areas and lower areas depending on a lot of things. A 100KB connection is nothing to complain about. I've personally never had a connection over 150 KB.

Not sure if its sprint or my phone but I can't break 40kbs down on anything and 3g cuts out all the time. Crappy....
The first thing I would do to verify your 3g speeds is to unroot your phone, and make sure you are running the latest .93 hboot release and sprint ota release. If your phone is already in this state (un rooted and latest hboot) then ignore me.
You should also look into unrevoked forever if you haven't already...it runs off the current hboot, and I've noticed that something about that hboot does help 3g speeds on some rooted phones if you go that route.
I've done a ton of research and practical testing on this subject and I can say without a doubt that the evo's current rooting methods DO have a negative impact on some 3g phones in some areas. And I'm not talking about 100 or 200 kbps here or there. In the same house, same phone, 1 rooted and 1 not. That was the ONLY difference. The rooted phone got 7 kbps. The stock got 1800kbps. I swapped phone setups so that the rooted one was now unrooted and vice versa. That time the rooted one got 47kbps and unrooted was 1681 kbps...in other words the problem followed the rooting process, and not the phone. I've done dozens of tests like this and others in various areas within the surrounding wilmington delaware area.
I have access to 3 rooted evos, 1 evo that is always stock, as well as a samsung moment. The 4 evos are all rev 3 nova. I also did similar tests on the hero with the same sorts of results. Feel free to pm me or post here with any questions.
EDIT: the kbps numbers I listed were for download speeds. Upload speeds on both rooted and unrooted, regardless of build or boot version, were consistent at around 600 -700 kbps during almost all of my testing.
EDIT2: I forgot to say - this problem also happened to me when I changed recoveries from clockwork to AmonRA. So it's not JUST the rooting process that can cause this, but several low-level engineering commands, such as flashing a kernel, upgrading a ROM, etc.
Tiepoz baught two yoo bi swype"3
That's pretty crappy, I get full 3g pretty much everywhere around St. Louis until I get out to the country. And pretty good 4g around town. My 3g is about 1.5mb down. 4g is 5 to 7mb down.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Flash the PRL to connect to Verizon's towers. I get 1.2 mb/s even see 2mb/s occasionally. Of course ping times are raised.
It's pretty hit or miss here, one day I will get 50-150k down and the next it will be +1meg. Next time it get drops below 500 you can bet I will be talking to somebody about it though, their advertised 3G speed is 600kb - 1.5mb.
100kb is ridiculous
I get anywhere between 500-1mb down 100-200kb up. My 4G easily does between 2-6mb down and 1mb up. People just love to complain. You didn't realize this within your 30 day trial? If so, why didn't you switch carriers?
What should the prl be right now ? And how are you guys testing the speeds? Nvr done it

You live in an area with poor coverage or your phone has a faulty radio.
I get good signal and up/Downs on 3g. If I nandriod away from cm6, I can get 6-7mb down and 1mb up with 4g in San leandro CA.

I think it is my radio. I was getting fine speeds up until 3 days ago when I noticed severe loading lag in my tethered apps. I get decent pings ~ 200-300ms which is not too out of the ordinary. I did a speed test other day and it was 50KB/s down and 70KB/s up. I figured it was just a faulty day but it has gone on far too long now. This is with 5/5 bars too... Just gotta wait for my new Evo to come in. Seems like every hardware ****up is happening at once.

My take on Galaxy Nexus problems (VZW)

I've had this phone now for less than a month. I know it's not a long time, but I think I've got a pretty good idea of how this phone performs. I have not rooted this phone, I am on 4.02 and PRL 15119.
1. The signal problem:
Coming from a Droid2, the first thing I noticed was one or no bars where I used to have full! I was losing data all the time, until I switched to CDMA only. My phone kept switching to LTE and back again, I spent more time in hand offs than connected!
I had the opportunity to have my Nexus, a TBolt, and a Maxx all in my basement together and did a few tests. All three phones had trouble holding LTE here when I was able to run a speed test, they all performed similarly, between 1 and 2 Mbps. When all three switched to CDMA, they displayed one more bar on and off than my Nexus, but showed similar pings and speeds.
I spend a lot of time in my basement and have never had troubles losing data (CDMA only) even though it displays 0-1 bars all the time.
Now, I do occasionally have problems with data, but it's nothing new to me. My Droid2 would show full signal and just not load a page or drop to 1x in locations known to be strong service.
I have not had this problem with the WiFi hand off back to cellular data. This phone switches faster than my Droid2 ever did. Like, by a lot. I work in no service building. Every morning I turn my WiFi on and just turn it off when I get in my car to go home. Usually I have cellular service before I can even turn off the WiFi.
I read a lot of reports where someones Nexus would be outperformed in a 4G speed test by another Verizon 4G device. Not the case here. My tests were constantly the same when comparing between the Nexus, TBolt, and Maxx.
I stopped in the Verizon store and two of the sales dudes had 4G phones, a Razr and another Galaxy Nexus. The Nexus guy was rooted on 4.04 and couldn't break 10Mbps while Razer guy and myself were fighting for 40Mbps.. Maybe there are some lemons out there
All in all, I may have gotten a good device (made in China, go figure), but I do not believe there is a real problem here. If this is your first android on Verizon, I can see where you'd think there are problems. Whenever I pick up my phone, I just ignore the bars and use it. It always works. Even in 3G, this phone loads pages WAY faster than my Droid2.
2. Battery life: I am not a real heavy user. There are times when I'll spend 20 minutes in the bathroom playing angry birds or reading threads, but that's about it. I got the Verizon extended battery before leaving the store with my new phone. This battery has 200mah more juice than the extended battery in my old Droid2.
I think this phone get's great stand by time, I got it to go 3 days off charger with a few calls and texts every day and a little bit of angry birds
On a whole, I'd have to say it get's as good or better life than my last phone.
3. Random reboots: I was constantly pulling my phone out of my pocket to find that it was off. I had gotten quite concerned after reading all the posts about crash reboots. It wasn't until I set the phone down while booting it up that I saw the screen shut off. I knew something wasn't right here and reproduced the shut down by smacking the phone in my palm while it was booting it up.
After looking closely, I noticed the battery would move up and down in its compartment. I solved this by taking some folded paper and taping it to the bottom edge of the battery. Pushing the battery up into the contacts on the phone. I also added some tape/paper to the top of the battery so the cover is pushing it down into the compartment.
Obviously I can't speak for everyone, but I haven't had a single crash/reboot. Just this battery connection problem.
4. Slow screen rotation: I have noticed this, it is VERY annoying when you first get the phone. Habit is to flip it landscape BEFORE launching the app you want to use. This is why you think it's so slow, because the home screen will not flip, it just refuses to. In any app, it flips just like you're used to. A non problem that I'm sure will get fixed.
5. Screen banding: I tried looking at the blank grey screen on any brightness, I could not get the bands I kept reading about. I guess I got lucky!
6. Overheating: I read this phone will try to use 2.4 and 5GHz spectrum's while on WiFi. The first thing I did was set it to 2.4 only and have not had any issues. I use WiFi 8 hours a day every day with out the phone getting hot. I also use the hot spot almost every night, as I don't have a land line internet at home. Never an issue, once again, to the touch this phone was not as hot as my Droid2.
I really like ICS and this phone seems like a keeper. I hope this inspires someone to go out and buy the Nexus!!
Over the weekend I went to the Verizon store to compare the vz nexus signal. Turns out every device with lte read -60 and then nexus -80. But there was one lg phone that displayed both signals at the same time, 1x and lte read -60 and -80. So I wonder does Verizon lte phones actually never show lte signal and always show cdma even when connected to lte?
Just earlier today I compared my Galaxy Nexus at -110 to my dad's Rezound at -80. Side by side at the exact same time. I'm sorry I didn't take a picture.
I'm unrooted stock 4.0.2 right now.
Silly question but did the salesman with the Nexus have LTE on?
How in the world could you go 3 days on a 2100mah? The most i can get is maybe a day or day and a half. Usually its under a day as i use my phone alot.

This was achieved over a weekend in a strong service area on cdma only. I was at a solid 3/⁴ bars the whole time. I was at a buddys house for a lan, so i was doing my surfing on the computer. I was doing most of my texting in google voice on my pc, so the only use the phone saw was calls and bathroom browsing lol.
Yes, the nexus measures signal differently and this is why it cant hold 4g, it thinks the signal is too weak and lets go before it should. If you had a vzw droid before and know where the strong 3g is, set it to cdma only and see how it performs compared to the old phone. If your getting data drops and dropped calls where you didnt before, then exchange your phone.
Ive read there is a way to force lte only, this would be the best test. But i cant remember how to do it.
Want to add, the ics keyboard is the best one ive ever used. Also, speaker volume on this phone is plenty loud. I have had problems with call quality when i have no bars. Just does not sound good and hard to unserstand people. When i have a bar or more, sounds great. Like theyre in the room.

Could the differences have been due to your radios? I'm on 4.0.4 with the new radios and I don't break 10Mpbs.
The speed is fast enough for me and I don't remember exactly the speeds I had on the earlier radios. I vaguely remember breaking 10Mpbs at times. I might reflash the older radios and do speed tests.

For reference all my mentions have been using the official speedtest.net app and chicago servers. Im tempted to root, but im waiting for 4.05 ota and have no idea how to do it. I've found that LTE can vary wildly in speeds. You really need multiple tests with multiple phones at the same location/time.
That said, I saw a huge difference between FC05 and FA02. I found that the best combination for my phone was FC04 on the CDMA radio and FA02 on the LTE radio. It's a good 2mbits faster and much more stable. Signal in my house is borderline, so you really see the difference.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I flash the FC04/FA02 combo and in the spot near my house where I am disappointed, 4.5Mpbs down / 2.5 up, I got pretty much the same results. One difference I did notice is that the hybrid combo is slower to switch from 3G than FC05/FC05. I toggled LTE to force 4G connect.
I flashed back. Eager to see what 4.05 brings and also if the latest official IMM76K brings new radios.

Also, if your read the OP he was not complaining about issues as much as addressing them.

I really thought Verizon 4G LTE was better than this

I just switched from Sprint 3G to Verizon 4G LTE. I was really hoping for a big improvement. I "kinda" got what I wanted except in the one place I am at the most....work. I spend 9-12 hours a day at work in a factory and the Verizon signal just barley makes it where I sit all day. I basically don't get 4G unless I go outside. Sprint was killing me with 20Kbps download speed and I got tired of it. Now I may be stuck in the same with Verizon. On the bright side Verizon does work very well outside of my work, unlike Sprint.
I did install a custom rom with latest updates. Android Revolution 4.0.1
What's the question?
You're worried about data speeds inside a factory?

More of a comment. I thought 4G would work better than 3G. I sit at a desk in the factory. So yes I'm concerned about data.

because of the frequency, LTE is worse inside buildings if i remember correctly.
the good news, your 3g is faster than sprint by a long shot
It's the nature of the beast. In many factories, you're going to run into quite a few things that are going to impair RF transmissions. Some frequency bands may propagate better than others, but you need to bear in mind that it's already a suboptimal environment.

I don't know much either, but I doubt they would do anything about it unless there's a profit involved
I guess they could have "supercharged" service for more money haha.
Bite your tongue!
Being at work.....doesn't that mean you should not be using your phone for personal use? I know everybody does it but too many people abuse the time clock.....
that being said, maybe you should not be bummed that your phone doesn't work at crazy speeds, this way you can be great full for the job you keep in this tough economy.
Not trying to sound like a d!ck but complaints like this are really unneeded and undeserving.

You would probably get a much better signal with the RAZR. I was getting 2 bar of 4G LTE in my basement, where my Galaxy Nexus could barely keep a 3G signal. Unfortunately the radios on the Galaxy Nexus suck, so that may have something to do with it.

I've recently moved from a sprint NS4G to a Sprint Gnex (toroplus).
The stock 4.1.1 is awesome, and the performance is great. Battery life and heat are a bit of a issue, but not a deal killer at all.
LTE Coverage ??
My main issue is LTE coverage, or the lack thereof. I have had Sprint be very responsive to my concerns in opening a network ticket, and walking through a network reset [ i.e. SCRTN ( Enter *#*#72786#*#* + MSL ). ] and other steps.
In looking at other threads, posts and dedicated Sprint 4g forums, I'm getting the sense that the toroplus has a less than steller network performance record.
My daughter's unlocked GSM is on a T-Mobile $30/ plan, and it kills mine in all areas around town, so I'm really focusing this thought on the Sprint toroplus.
So, give me feedback on this thought -> Should I switch it for a Sprint Galaxy S 3?
I can not bear to think of not having a stock JB to work off of, but without a steady and strong data connection, so much of the superior software experience is lost to me anyway. I have network issues impacting the performance of so much of the software, from Google talk app to google now.
I hate the GSIII's skin and home button, but if it would give me a significantly better network/data experience, I'm tempted to make the switch.
What do you think?
p.s. Although I am obviously asking a question, I intentionally posted this is 'general' as the overall nature is more of a discussion/opinion. If this is incorrect, PM me and I'll move it or delete it.
I'm assuming your daughter has the GSM version of the Galaxy Nexus? Your question is more about Cell Providers than about phones since you're basing your issues on network performance.
Depends
Gs3 is newer blah blah and has 2gb ram. Nexus is a nexus you will get the latest android sooner than anyone else
Other than that gs3 wins

Agreed but he's basing his theory on the fact that his daughter's phone is faster (network wise) but it's a different network all together. I don't see how a different phone would help if it's a network issue.
Better phone won't make data faster
Get gs3 for T-Mobile in that case

Why compare when you can buy both..common sense when in doubt buy those two. That would solve ur curiosity:sly:

Yeah, just buy both, duh. Lol. If only.

It seems as though, due to both phones being made by Samsung, that the radios in each would at least be comparable, resulting in similar network connectivity and quality. The good thing is that Sprint has the 2 week return period so you can always get the S3 and try it and take it back if the network quality is the same as what you are experiencing with the gnex but you might have to eat the $36 restocking fee... Or complain enough they waive it, haha.

The S3 is a Samsung so it has its reputable crappy radio signal. I dont think getting the S3 will change things period. Sprint's network is well.. Sprint's network. It has highs and lows you just happen to be in a Low. I mean at my house i get 2 bars of 3G and its like .50 - .75 mbps but going up the street it'll hit full bars with 1.2 - 1.7 mbps its really iffy and all depends on location. Your best bet would be to drop Sprint sell the Gnex and get a GSM gnex and put that sucker on Prepaid T-Mobile or any other GSM carrier.

I think you are right, my issue is a get 'the job' to pay for Sprint, so ..... I guess I'm getting what I pay for!
I'm wondering if anyone out there has used on Sprint both a Gnex and G3 at similar locations to prove/disprove if the radios are the same. Seems likely they'd be similar, I had read some reports that at least on Sprint the G3's radio was performing better on LTE.
Thanks.

I'm not even in the US but my LTE experiences prove otherwise. Had a GS2 Skyrocket and while LTE speeds are blazing it has a very weak signal compared to 3g/4g. In full 3g/4g areas it would always have 2 bars less. Indoors it was even worse sometimes gone.(would swap back to 4g) Now not all networks are the same but thought I'd share. As previously mentioned it seems Sprint in your area is the problem not your phone

There may be small differences but I would be shocked to learn that the gs3 has some kind of radical advantage over the gnex. The problem is sprint. Luckily they are rolling out lte pretty quickly. By Christmas we should see a decent footprint.

Question about 4g data

Hey guys,
I just switched from Verizon to t mobile and I have a question about their data connection.
I know they have 4g and 4g lte but are you suppose to get data while on regular 4g?
Whenever I'm on 4g I get no data even with full bar. I am currently on Jedi V5.
Thanks in advance.
Yes. Data should work at all times. Even on 4G.

Any idea why there is no internet with full bar on 4g? Or how I can fix it?

you need to further explain in detail what is happening on your phone? maybe a video or something.

lawl tmobile sucks....no but seriously, i would recheck your apn settings, make sure theyre all in order...otherwise...thats strange, i know that i have LTE all the time, but if i make a phone call, i drop to 4G because the LTE Radio has to be disabled temporarily when im making calls, which is understandable, the only other thing i can think of is T-Mobile being at fault for some kind of issue on their end. but if you can check your apn settings and try again see what you come up with.
the SAME thing happens to me. I believe it has todo where we live? Anyways in my house when I do loose LTE and get even full bars of 4G its worse then 3G. Half the times it says no connection other times it takes forever to load. I tried going in and out of airplaine mode tried turning ut off and on ect. Also tried to dial##2263## and don't work on my phone. Maybe because of the ROM? But yea my 4G is crapppp.

I also am in the middle of switching over from Verizon to T-Mobile. This is going to be a really hard decision to stay or not. In terms of Data, T-Mobile is no where near Verizon even if they have faster speeds on SOME of their towers. Verizon is very solid and I just always have Data. It isn't something you ever even think about. T-Mobile on the other hand is very hit and miss. When it is good, it is very good but when it isn't, well it isn't.
So to get to you problem, I am seeing the very same thing with my two completely stock Note 3's. I just took a trip this weekend up the cost (Los Angeles to Pismo Beach up HWY 101) so I got to see the how the network does on a trip. for MUCH of the trip, I had a very strong 4G signal but had EXTREMELY slow data speeds, It was basically unusable. Google Maps for example was completely unusable since the map wouldn't update with this extremely slow or no data connection. What I am seeing with T-Mobile is that the connection type indicator such as 4G has 0 to do with what speeds you are going to get. Many of the 4G towers I was on was only giving me download speeds in the range of 0.1 to 0.01 Mbps.
I am within an excellent range for the tower at my house, I can actually see it from my house with no interference between it and me. My speeds on what shows to be a strong 4G signal is Ping = 644 ms, Download = 0.69 Mbps and upload = 0.85 Mbps. But again, on my trip, there were many times that full bars of 4G gave me no response to anything I tried to do that required Data.
T-Mobile may have the fastest speeds when you can get them but there are WAY to many towers and that have 0 to very slow speeds on major highways! You can't even use Google Maps on US HWY 101?
I really want to stay on T-Mobile but coming from Verizon it is a huge step backwards in terms of data reliability. If I do end up staying, I really hope they start concentrating on making the data network actually usable when you are driving around. I would rather have 4 or 5 Mbps of speed on every tower vs 25+ Mbps on some towers sprinkled around that your lucky if you live next to one.
