I have been trying to root for the last three days and I cannot get this to work! I have tried using Unrevoked3 but it always says firmware is to new! I also tried using the latest RUU to see if the Hboot would get upgraded to 2.18 but even that has not worked!

You gotta use HTC dev it works fine, make sure you read the instructions well.

Hmm, maybe THIS? Revolutionary
^^^^^^^^
what i used. worked flawlessly. will need to provide phone serial number in order to get a beta key, then put that beta key into the revolutionary program, make sure you have HTC Sync uninstalled, plug in phone and leave in charge only, then run the program and it'll automate the s-off and (optionally) flash CWM Recovery for you.
EDIT: I thought the 2.3.5 update updated the HBOOT too? hmm.

RUU or PC36IMG? Some people call both RUUs.
The RUU will not work if you do not have the correct drivers installed. You can find the drivers (FASTBOOT DRIVERS) from this page.
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/revolutionary
You need to install this to your computer, then run the RUU again with your phone connected to your computer while inside the phone's operating system with USB Debugging enabled under Settings/Applications, or in FASTBOOT USB highlighted in red from your bootloader.
If you used the PC36IMG.zip file, then I do not know exactly why it did not work.

Hello,
I wanted to post in dedicated post in development section but I don't have enough message posted for that !
I'm trying to install a custom ROM on my Desire (non operator version, stock rom). So I rooted it with VISIONary+ and it looks to have succeeded. Then I installed RomManager to install Clockworkmod ! When I select Flash Clockworkmod in RomManager it states after few seconds that it downloaded it but not that it flashed it When I reboot with recovery mode I get the default android menu and not the one of Clockworkmod. What's wrong ?
I tried also with latest version of unrevocked but it hungs up at end stating "Root failed: perhaps your firmware is too recent !"
Here are all infos of my phone in Boot:

Hey I was facing similar issues few days back, use the RUU for your device to restore it to factory settings and then try unRevoked again.
also this is my post -http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970566 hope this helps
To confirm, the 2.29.405.5 software is what was on your phone when you got it? If so, use unrEVOked 3.21 as this seems to work for most people (although I had no issues using 3.32 with the same version as you)

Yep I tried unRevoked with old version of amon_ra but no better luck, so I'm going to flash it to RUU and try again. Where should I find the RUU ? I just need to copy it at root of sd card and then in boot mode I select that file and that's it, right ?
Update: I found the link in forum with RUU for Desire Considering mine is an official HTC phone, not branded by any carrier, I should use one of these I suppose but which one :
RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.15.405.4_Radio_32.30.00.28U_4. 05.00.11_release_122704.exe
RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4. 06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe
RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00. 32U_5.11.05.27_release
Update bis: these are all windows update programs so no way to use them for me as I run on Mac, and in Parallels on Mac, Desire doesn't appear as USB peripheral I can attach to Windows when it's in boot mode
Thanks,
Vincèn

I had issues with the latest unrevoked and I was getting a failed message. When i removed my sd card everything goes well.
So give it a try without your sd card, who knows it might work for you too!
P.S I have the same HBOOT and android version with you.
Why are you usung unrevoked anyway? Since you are s-off you can easily flash a new recovery via fastboot.
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img.
I don't think you can use unrevoked on an already rooted device - but not sure though.

oky so I reinstalled RUU 2.29.405.5 with success ! and then tried to run Unrevoked and it finishes with same error as previously (Backup CID is missing, I ran it without security Options !).
If I try to run UNrevoked with Amon_Ra 2, I get Failed to get root. Is your firmware too new ?
With Amon_Ra 0.93 same error about CID missing !
With Clockwork mod 2.5.0.7, same error about CID missing !
I'm desperated It looks like my phone can't be upgraded easily Any other ideas ?

Its the latest official from Sprint so it cant be rooted.
You can also just flash any stock rom and kernel, unless they try to go into recovery they wont have any way of knowing your rooted.

Bootloaders cannot be downgraded.
Are you using one of alpharev's r2 hboots (cm7 or oxygen)? If yes, you have to flash bravo downgrade first, because these both new hboots are locked. This means they cannot be overwritten. After you have flashed bravo downgrade, try to flash ruu again.
Swyped from my HTC Desire using XDA App
How do I check which bootloader I have? and what do you mean by Bravo downgrade?
All I can see in fastboot is "hboot 0.93.0001" It doesnt say wether its Alpharev or stock?
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Boot into bootloader and check first line. What's written there?
I mean if you have one of my named bootloaders, you have to download bravo_downgrade.img from here:
http://alpharev.nl
After flashing this via fastboot you should be able to flash ruu successfully.

What do you mean by flashing through fasboot. I know how to apply .zip updates from recovery but how do you do it through fastboot? Does it need to be connected to a PC, any pre requisites for this method? I can see their are steps mentioned on the link you posted but I don't understand step 3. If you can clarify I will be very thankful.
When I boot into hbbot and there are options like "fastboot" and recovery etc. On the first line it says HTC Bravo PVT1 SHIP S-ON ?

hey thanks, it worked. Can you please explain why the RUU you posted worked and mine didnt? What do the numbers in the RUU signify? I know of those numbers is the radio version. What about the rest?
RUU_Bravo_Froyo_Vodafone_UK_2.33.161.2_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_157522_signed
Bravo_Froyo_Vodafone refers to the software and carrier.
2.33.161.2 < What does this refer to?
32.49.00.32U < This is the radio obviously. Does it have to be match the radio on my device or not? (It does match by the way)
5.11.05.27 < What does this refer to?
thanks for all the help man. Could you kindly explain two more things?
1) What are the benefits of S-off?
2) whats the point of custom bootloaders like Alpharev?
3) When I root a device, I can obviously install cracked APKs from other websites. What other advantages does rooting offer?

Mine worked because you wanted to flash an ruu which was too old for your phone.
The number "2.33.161.2" is referred to the software number of android or rather in this case of the android software number with vodafone branding.
32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27 is the radio.
1) You can use fastboot, flash different partition layouts or you can delete apps from /system/app while phone is running.
2) More space for your desire.
3) You can install custom roms, backup your apps and system with e.g. titanium backup or you can "take a picture" of your current system configuration with nandroid backup.
For more information, just use the search.
And do not forget to hit the thanks button.
Thanks. You are AWESOME.
Edit:
I forgot. I dropped my Desire a few weeks ago and the screen got cracked. I got the front glass replaced but now the proximity sensor stays ON all the time. SO when I make a call, the screen goes black and the ONLY way of getting the cell back in is removing the battery. I'll get the cell phone repaired in a week or two. Till then is there any app or any way I can disable the proximity sensor? I was using an MIUI rom before I flashed the RUU and it had an option under "Call settings" to turn off proximity sensor so I'm sure it can be done. Is there any other way to do this without having to go back to MIUI? :|
I rerooted my phone thanx for the help. HOWEVER, like an idiot I inadvertently updated my OTA to the new 4.54.651.1 and it knocked out my root. I have tried running the Andriod Flash (Thanks Captain Throwback) with the new 4.54 and nothing. When I ran the 4.53 i got "Main Version is Older". Everything I have tried has led to 1 frustrated dude here. I keep getting "NO IMAGE OR WRONG IMAGE"

Your best bet is to re-run revolutionary root. by the way, vol+up is for the diagnostic menu, vol+down gets you to the bootloader [where I assume you wanted to go].

I don't believe that Revolutionary will work with the 6.17 bootloader (I might be wrong).
You need to run this file first to get back to 2.16 Hboot.

No these are RUU.exe you run from your Windows machine. You could also try Captain_Throwback's PC36IMG.zip's you can flash from the HBOOT from the post here.

either the 4.54 or the 3.70 so you will be able to root with either Unrevoked or Revolutionary.
Ok its downloaded just curious do you think this will brick my device before I go through and install it just want to be sure Its not going to brick it

I tried this and I got error failed to get root is your firmware to new.
If succesful an RUU restores your device back to stock firmware. There should not be a brick.
Sent from my PC36100
I tried it and it says ERROR [155] UNKNOWN ERROR
the rom update utility cannot update your android phone.

Make sure you have the necessary drivers for Windows.

Have you tried the PC36IMG.zip?
According to G&E all HBoots are now downgradeable as of 3/15/12 so try downgrading back to your old HBOOT that worked. There's also a thread on here, I think it (Radios) by Caulkin it where I get all the latest radios, combo zips, hboot versions and more, great resource, good luck.

Just use the 4.54 PC36IMG.zip file from my post that someone linked earlier, and flash it through Bootloader. Then you can re-root/unlock using Revolutionary.
