why is my battery life so bad - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I am running liquid smooth 1.25 right now. That included lean kernal. But my battery life is horrible.
I lose 1-2% a MINUTE running gps navigation. I was on vacation with a friend and we used his razr to navigate around san francisco literally all day and when we got back to the hotel he had over half battery. He is running stock though, should i switch back to stock?
I played gameboid for an hour and lost about 40% battery power.
I have tried hotplugx and interactivex, no help.
Is the battery life for this phone really that bad?

Take note of your screen on time. And have a look at the other 17 threads about battery life. But to answer your question: yes, it is that bad.

I recommend buy the extended battery also running foxhound rom 4.0.3 seems better than liquidsmooth 1.25 also be weary liquidsmooth1.35 my google play wouldnt show all apps available foxhound does not have this flaw mod options clean quick great battery
from my galaxy nexus foxhound rom 4.0.3

It's the price you pay for AMOLED screens. Trade it in for a TFT or IPS phone if you want better battery life.

are you running anything else?
are you running anything else in the background? Do you have wifi on? Do you have anything set up for auto updating? Also, were you going in and out of service a lot? I've read many posted about these issues running battery life down. Try checking if your baseband is up to date. I don't know if any of this will help.

Truth. AMOLED screens consume a lot of power.

Best Rom for battery life?

I'm on an incredible 2 with cm9 but am looking into doing my gf's nexus so she can get some better battery life. I already turned off LTE but if she actually uses it throughout the day, its dead by 6. So I'm wondering what the best option for battery life? I seem drawn to Gummy for some reason...

Gummy is known to have some of the best battery life. Liquidsmooth is very good also.
Only reason I didn't try Gummy yet is the official update isn't out yet, the 4.0.4 build. Still in testing.
I'm on GSM tho so idk bout CDMA
Liquidsmooth
I am running liquidsmooth 1.25 and am getting over 2 days - I attached a screenshot
I got very good battery life using AOKP B29, and using LeanKernal 3.1.0 EXP1 180. I also turned off my 4g, and usually have my brightness to the very lowest setting. 4G and the screen are what eat up 90% of your battery.

Bugless Beast has been the best for me by far. I get about 30% better battery life on BB than with Gummy/Leankernel. My 2ยข.

Right, which would show that the ROM itself is good for battery life.

.... any ROM can do good on battery life when you don't turn on the screen.
Also, OP is asking for LTE recommendations and you're on GSM.

The display should drain battery at a consistent rate (depending on brightness, etc) but independent of the ROM shouldn't it? I don't think that the stock ROM's display power draw would really differ from Liquids display power draw. Same thing with the radios...but maybe I'm wrong.
Also, I was simply showing the success that I have had with this ROM - which is notably improved battery life from stock.

Your wrong kinda-ish haha.....some ROMs get better battery life when screen is on. Pretty much fact.
Actual screen power usage like the amount of mah's or w/e, it might be the same across everything.....but it the amount of battery being used by the OS etc...where the ROMs differ when screen is on for the most part.
Hence, I can get like 40 minutes of straight screen usage and 10% on Liquidsmooth and kernel, but only like 25-30 on another setup.
Oh and btw......for the most part, battery life is heavily dependent upon Kernel more than ROM. Though the combination of the two definitely play a significant role.
I have to agree with this. The kernel is what really will determine your battery life and how you utilize the options that the kernel provides. That combined with screen brightness are the biggest factors. AOKP + the Franco kernel have been the best combo for me. For medium to heavy usage I get about 12 hours a day.

GSM Nexus Battery Life. Worth leaving SGS with CM9 for it?

So I currently have a Vibrant that has CM9 installed and the thing rocks! My battery life is pretty good for moderate to heavy use, and gets me through at least a full work day.
As we all know the Galaxy Nexus GSM is now on sale for $399 straight from google, and I am very tempted to get one. I have read ALL OVER the net that the battery life sucks, I have seen tests done that show it only gets 3 hrs MAX of surf time, gets a decent 8 hrs of talk, and about 6 hrs of video, each tested with a fully charged battery.
SO my question is, is it worth it? Is the battery life as bad as they say? Or will it be better than what I have on my SGS?
Also, how do the picture quality compare to say... and Iphone 4s, etc.
Thanks for your feedback, I am sure it will help more than just me

Do you need a 4.6 inch screen or not? If so, you gotta deal with the consequences of powering such a screen.
For what it's worth, I went from Captivate > Nexus S > Galaxy Nexus and I feel as if the battery life were all the same ball park.

True, it does seem I wouldn't see much of a difference either way I go. The bigger screen is nice, plus the HD display, and the better camera and added flash, front facing camera, and the major factor is the PRICE POINT!
That is a perfect price point for this phone, I have that itch!!
Standy by time is great. Better than my old sensation 4g. Which had decent battery life to begin with.
My battery can last more than a full day, with the screen on for 4+ hours with a couple hours of streaming music, email, etc.
I think most of the complaints are from the LTE version, and pre software updates that may have helped.
Compared to my sgs4g I get about the same on stock battery. With a qcell 2050 mAh battery I get about an extra 2 hours give or take.

i never considered the gsm gnex to have bad battery life even on stock
you can get much better battery life with a custom kernel installed. i can get 2 days of what i consider normal use (phone calls, losts of sms, some mms, facebook, twitter, games on the ****ter ... ) using GLaDOS kernel.
as previously mentioned the majority of the battery woes come from the battery sucking lte antennas ... all lte phones have this issue and really require new battery technology imo
I upgraded from SGS running CM7.1 to GSM GNex in November..
With my Galaxy S I rarely went a full day without having to plug it in for a charge.
With my GNex I have never plugged it in for a charge during the day, and usually have 40-50% battery left before bed (2h screen time). SGN rocks!

I have a Vibrant with CM9 and a Galaxy Nexus GSM. I don't have complaints of battery life on either. Both get me through a full day. I definitely get more than 3 hours of web surfing time on the Galaxy Nexus. It's been good enough that I really don't pay attention to battery life.

Battery life for my friend is great and he got a gsm version personally sucks on sprint, camera is better in iPhone 4S for sure since I got both devices but it doesn't take such a bad pictures, is just mm idk for some reason the lense seems to be better on the iPhone 4S so far I'm undecided in which device should I stay with x
In my usage streaming audio seems to use less battery. Other uses use similar juice.
I had a SGS Captivate before with CM9.

Verizon Galaxy Nexus 3g browsing battery life

My web browsing battery life is horrible. I turned off 4g and I still see my battery drop roughly 1% every minute. That means I don't even get 2 hours of screen on time. The battery drain also seems similar when on 4g so there really isn't a difference. My wifi battery life is a little better. I can maybe get 2.5- 3 hours screen on time. I switched my battery for a qcell 3800mah battery, yet the internet browsing battery life still seems to be the same. Roughly 1% drain every minute. With wifi and the new battery I get roughly 3.5-4 hours screen on time. I have used a number roms from CM10 to Aokp to Jelly Belly, and am currently using codename android and recently switched the kernel to air kernel. My screen brightness is usually 60% and everything like gps, nfc, and auto sync are normally turned off. Is there anything I can do the get better battery life such as using a different radio or is anyone having similar battery issues? Thank You
It is hard to get awesome battery life on the VZW version. I have been dealing with the same. I honestly think my issue is the newness of 4g. I cane from iPhone and inc2 which in my opinion had the best battery life of current phones.

There's nothing wrong with that battery life/screen on time. There is no other Android phone that's going to perform a great deal better than that on 3G/4G with heavy web browsing. You're expecting more than what exists in the public technology and hardware at this point in time.

I appreciate the replies and feel a little better that I'm not the only one having problems with browsing over 3g. The weird thing is though, that I'm still getting less than two hours of screen on time of straight browsing with the extended 3800mah battery. Wouldn't the battery be at least at 3-4 hours cause its double the capacity. Also what are the temperatures of your phone after heavy use, because the top screen area of my phone gets extremely hot and the temperature can get to 120 degrees.

Try out SetCPU and if you like it, support it by buying it in Google Play.
I use Franco's nightly 241 with the GPU OC'd at 384 and the CPU underclocked at 1GHz. If I start seeing the phone get jittery, I bump it up as needed and the kernel supports up to 1.8 GHz. If I walk around with it at 1.0 GHz, I can get moderate to heavy use out of it from 7:30 to about 6:00 on the stock battery.
The versions of SetCPU that are up on that post are over a year old. If they don't work (which I haven't tried them on the gnex), just test one of the free ones on the market.

[Q] Signs of a Bad Battery?

So, no matter what I do my battery life stays the same regardless of what rom or kernel I'm running. So now I'm wondering if it's my battery, but I'm thinking even if my battery was bad the rom or kernel should have some sort of effect on battery life. Does anyone know if this may be the cause of a bad battery or what else could be the issue, I know for sure it's not the rom or kernel so it has to either be a problem with my phone or battery but I'm not sure which one it is.
Try running a looped video run down test. And report what you get for screen on time.

Yeah, that seems very low, I guess you may have a bad battery, by the way what ROM were you running when you did that test and you did test it from a full charge right?
Yeah I tested from 100%, I'm running Frosty JB v3.0, It's insanely smooth but like the other roms it wasn't able to increase my battery life. So far the only thing that will increase battery life is if I underclock the cpu. Other than that nothing else I've tried works.

I doubt it would be your phone, as long as you follow the directions completely, and wipe everything that you should, it should be the battery's fault.

I honestly don't think your battery life is that terrible. Streaming Netflix destroys your battery regardless of wifi or mobile data, and so does playing a game. Three hours of screen on time isn't that bad, especially considering you watched netflix for two hours and in your screenshot you have no bars of signal, which will also destroy your battery in a hurry.

There are no bars because I turned off data and was using wifi, I agree that netflix drains more than an average video played off the phone but I still think this is horrible. I mean 5 hours total is not something to brag about when your screen on time was only 3 hours, not to mention I underclocked to 1.2ghz to save power and was on the lowest brightness setting.

New battery after 8 months?

Been using the 2100mAh since I got my Vzw Nexus. Yesterday, I had it on WiFi at home with a solid connection all day with sync off, maps disabled, and GPS/Bluetooth/everything off. I got 2 hours and 53 minutes of screen on time at 30% brightness. With WiFi on entirely and 5 bars of it...I would expect closer to 4 hours of screen on time...and I would see that back during the ICS days. Currently running Rascarlo with Trinity a67.
Think its time for a new battery? This is by far the best ROM and Kernel combo results I've seen on terms of battery life. How long do you guys keep your batteries for?

I've had my battery for quite a while running CM10 + Franco Kernel. The newest Franco Kernel when it comes to battery life is INSANELY good, I was starting to think the same thing as you but man... Franco Kernel changes my battery life and it barely ever drains.
You could try a different combination of kernels to see if it helps. And there is a method to doing a full charge (google it) something involving fully draining it.
Do you have any wakelocks? use the app, BetterBatteryStats to find out.
Debug your phone before throwing money away towards a new battery.

I appreciate the response. I use BetterBatteryStats, GSam Battery, CPUSpy, and AutoStarts (for disabling everything related to Maps). I'll try out Franco's new kernel. Thanks for the tip. I've been stuck on Trinity for a while...perhaps it is time for a change. Which ROM are you running if I may ask?
Edit: Which Franco kernel were you referring to? His latest nightly 290 or his latest Milestone 6?

Batteries last about a year charging once a day. If you run your battery dry a lot, expect to change sooner. My battery rarely goes below 40% and I try not to let it go below 10% when it does. I fully expect a year and I am @ 10 months. If you run it below 20% often I would say you probably need to change it already. YMMV of course.
...
Is there any other way we could check to see battery health? I know in better battery stats under 'tests' you can see it says battery health is 'good' but is there any other way?
Possibly max and min voltages? Ie fully charged ~4200mv and fully drained ~3500mv

You're looking for an app that compares designed capacity (1720mAh? I don't even know how much our phone has..) with actual capacity (which would probably be around 1500mAh after a year). I don't know of one, but if it helps, that's what you're looking for!
