[Q] Recognizing a USB host? and split sd mounting? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried searching, I may be using the wrong terms but I haven't found anything.
The first question is if there's an app/way for the phone to recognize what the device connected to via usb storage (for example it recognizing if it was connected to a specific PC or car stereo).
The second question is if there's a way to split (Partition?) the sd card so only a certain space is mounted. I basically want to keep the functionality of certain apps (xfered to the sd card for internal space issues) when the sd card is mounted. Not sure it's possible but I would like to know for sure.
These are complete noobs questions and so far google/searching hasn't given me a definite yes/no.
Thanks in advance

[Q] computer not recognizing evo as a disk drive

Hey everyone first time poster here. I have been researching the question I have in the forums and have not found an answer to my question yet so I figured I would just ask it. I just recently bought my htc evo and tried transferring a SNES rom over to my evo from my PC. At first my computer would not recognize that I was trying to have my evo seen as a disk drive (yes I did have it set to disk drive and not to charge only or another option). eventually it worked (I dont even know what I did, if I did anything at all). After I put this ROM onto my phone my sd card is mounted as read only (cant get it back to write), and no matter what I do I cant get my computer to read my phone as a disk drive. I tried changing the disk drive to another letter which didnt work, under device manager my computer recognizes I have an android phone plugged into my computer, but it still will not show anything in the "my computer" folder, it sees I have a device in, but I click on it and it says "please insert a disk into removable disk F". If anyone can help with this I would greatly appreciate it and thank you for taking the time to read all of this.
Well the first thing to make sure of is that after plugging in the device you go to the notification bar and press on the USB Mass Storage notification, then select "Turn on USB storage". If you've done that simple step and it still doesn't see the SD card, then very simply try a different USB port on your computer.
Even if your card is in read only mode, you should still be able to read it
I don't know why it would be in read only unless you forgot to mount it with read/write after an advanced command.
interesting, I have never seen the option of "turn on mass USB storage" when I've gone to the notification bar? In my notification bar I have a picture of the sd card with a question mark over it. When I drop down the notification bar the notification pertaining to the sd card says "mounted readonly" and the explaination says "The SD card has an unexpected problem. Tapping...." I have no idea what it says after that as it wont allow me to view the rest of the explanation.
As for the problem that this is causing is that it seems I cannot save anything to the sd card. The camera stops working to where I cant take pictures, or download music, and I'm assuming that its because these functions need somewhere to save the files and since the card is on read only nothing will be allowed to save on it?

theres probably an error on the sd card, may need to reformat if its from a different phone too. Try to reformat, probably the only thing possible right now. But before you do that, go to your settings and enable usb debugging and see if that works first to allow your sd card to mount to the pc. Then it should be read as a drive. if not, your gonna have to reformat. so try this, if not, I can try to trouble shoot you more......
thanks for your reply. And yes I shouldve said before that I tried the USB debugging feature as well and that didn't do the job either. I saw reformatting as a suggestion in another thread but didnt see information on how to do it and that is out of my realm of knowledge. If you could explain to me how to do it I would greatly appreciate it.

yea, no problem man, just go to settings>sdcard/sd>unmount the volume>reformat!
let me know if that works for you if not, something else is wrong.
well I go into settings> SD phone & storage> Unmount SD card, is something supposed to happen or am I supposed to do something else? After I tap that nothing happens and the "format SD card" option isnt highlighted meaning its not even an option to choose.
Hmmm. Unmount then remount then umonint again turn the phone off and on see if the uloption highligjts

oh wow that worked man!! Thank you so much for your help, you just saved me a bunch of frustration, now it shows up as a disk drive on my computer and the sd card is read/write compatible. Can't thank you enough man, do you happen to know of a reason as to why this would happen? I mustve set it to be like that somehow I just can't imagine how I did that. Also is there an app or way to back up all your files and apps on your phone and sd card and transfer them to your computer just in case something like this happens again at least I'll have backups so I wont loose everything.
Glad i could hel you. Ita no problem that you cant thank me enough, just as long as we solvee tue prob. You Could have dropped your phone and it knocked the SD card around or it just didn't read it correctly on boot. As far as I know, I don't know of any apps to backup SD card contents and phone data. I would just make a nandroid backup and store on PC. So if you make any vital errors, u can restore using your recovery agent.

[Q] USB and SD not recognized

Need a way to access internal memory so I can fix my usb or sd card see following for information:
Short Version:
USB wont work and SD card wont work so I cannot use the following method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695243
Long Version:
So right after i had backed up my rom i did a wipe, then the phone stopped recognizing my sd card. I took it to Sprint they couldn't figure it out, so i was stuck in Bootloader. yesterday i did a hard reset and wa-la i can now use my phone ...sorta. It will turn on I can access everything, but it freezes up and shuts off after 40 seconds (i got it to stay for 2mins one time) also it still will not recognize my sd card. I tried other cards still no luck and I know my card works because I can use it in my laptop. So i did a little searching on xda and found a fix, but i cant do the fix unless i plug my phone into the laptop and run a cmd prompt well now here is the other problem my computer sees the phone (listed as My HTC) but my phone wont recognize that it is plugged in. It will charge when it is shut off thats about it. Well back to xda and there is a fix for the usb, but.... I need my phone to recognize my sd card because the files will be on it. In short to fix my sd card i need usb and to fix the usb i need my card I am stuck in a horrible loop, so what I need is a way to access my phones internal memory so I can install the usb files on it so that i can fix usb then my card, then recover my rom.
Thanks to wall who help or at least try
Im not totally sure if this will help, but i know you can mount the sd card as usb storage in Amon_Ra and also in settings under "storage" or so i believe there are settings for mounting and unmounting the Micro Sdcard check those, it should be mounted in the settings for your phone to see it. hope i helped
I just had this exact same problem. Nandroid, wipe, flash, then stuck in bootloader spent two days trying fixes, unroot, root, and,had to turn it in. Luckily best buy has an awesome warranty.

thanks all... ended up replacing my phone, but if anyone ever finds a way to fix it let me know! Thanks again
I was really hoping that this thread would not dead-end. I've got what sounds like a similar issue...in addition to not being able to reformat my SD card (in Windows or in Android) due to it being detected as write-protected, but it's not write protected.
I'm really anxious to try the aforementioned thread to fix USB and SD, but I can't detect, mount, or format my SD card. Am I screwed?
*EDIT* Fixed the write-protection issue...working on the rest now.
*EDIT* Still can't format card through Android. Is there an ADB or fastboot command to format the SD card?

Transfering Files Off Phone Problems

i downloaded a bunch of tv shows threw them on my SD card while it was in the note. i get home and go to transfer them from the phone to the computer and after a few seconds i get an error "A device attached to the system is not functioning" what the hell, ive never had this issue on any phone. ok so i thought it might have been my 16gb SD card doing this but it seems every SD card i try keeps giving this error and locking me out of the SD card unless i disconnect and reconnect. anyone else having this problem or know how i can fix it?
If you have an SD Card reader try with that. If not a different USB Cable or possibly a different computer. Did you just get that particular SD Card which fails to connect?
getting an SD card reader defeats the point, i dont want to constanly rip the back off my phone to take the SD card out, my issue is every time i plug the phone in it is recognized and i can see the SD card or the internal storage. ill go and try transfering a file from either storage areas and it gives me a transfer error mid way through, it has done this on 3 different computers with 5 different usb cables, its something to do with the dumb MTP storage crap, anyone know a way i can fix this problem? help please

The suggestion was you try with a card reader to make sure it's not the card itself that may be bad. Several machines ans cables and still no luck may just say "the card is bad".

Or try AirDroid from the Google Play Market. Uses wifi.
Also, some sd cards have poor factory formatting.
For each of my sd cards, I always do a full, non-quick, format, before I use it.
thanks but no its not memory card, or cable related, its poor drivers by samsung, the internet is full of people complaining about this issue with allot of the newer samsung phones. i finally got it to work after spending a few hours installing and uninstalling drivers and countless reboots
samsung drivers

Please tell me how you got it right? Ive been struggling with this thing for so long and its such a hangup powering off the phone to take out the sd card!
No issues here, and I've been using the same drivers as my GS2 did. Did you try USB Mass Storage mode?
From my experience my computer will see my card on and off when it was formatted to xfat but after reformatting it to fat32 as soon as i plug my phone in it will automatically detect my card without installing or changing drivers.

[Q] Security Lock Bypass?

I'd like to start by saying I checked but couldn't find any similar threads to this issue I've been facing with my S3. I believe it to be a global issue since samsung did away with needing drivers to mount internal and external storage on their phones to just having the device showing up as a media device to simplify the user experience.
My question is that short of encrypting the phone and SD card (for those of us who don't have any incriminating or secret information on our phones but want at least a screen-lock's level of security), is there a way to prevent your phone from automatically attaching to any computer it's plugged into via internal storage and SD? Otherwise, I don't see a point in using a screen lock. Anyone can steal this phone, plug it into a computer, and have full access to all of your files.
Again please redirect this post if a thread currently exists. Such a security hole makes me nervous, granted I am rooted and use avast's defense module to safeguard a lost phone predicament. Thank you everyone!
With PIN lock, I can't access the contents of the int/ex SD card until I unlock the phone once.
Check your phone settings again. When my phone is locked (pin/face/etc), if I were to plug it into a PC, it detects the device but does NOT allow access to internal memory or SD card.
Yeah, when I connect via usb to my computer i have to drag the notification bar down and click on mount usb. When the screen is licked obviously you can't do that until you unlock it.

Have you cloned a failing SD card that was formatted for internal storage?

Hey guys,
HTC 10 user. Not even a year into my 128GB MicroSD card's life and it's forcing write-protection. I think it's about to die. I can read off it. I can't write.
This SD Card was formatted as internal storage and is encrypted.
I bought a similar 128GB MicroSD card and I'd like to simply clone the image to the new SD card.
Has anyone SUCCESSFULLY done this?
I've attempted it and I pop in the new SD Card and it doesn't detect the card. It simply asks me to insert a card, like the card doesn't even exist.
I've actually tried TWO cloned 128GB cards - they aren't detected.
From what I can tell, I'm doing identical clones of the original MicroSD so I am not sure what I am missing. I'm using a cheapo freeware utility to do the clone in Windows. I don't have the utility name in front of me and I'm not home at the moment.
I have two more things I'd like to try, but I don't know if it's a futile effort: I'd like to try a dd clone from a linux live cd. I'd also like to try EaseUs clone utility, but I fear that's some kind of trial and I'm going to have to shell out some $$ to utilize it.
I know I can unload the original SD's contents to a PC, toss a new card in there, format, and start fresh...download all the play store, f-droid apps again, likely re-download all my audible books, drag my music back onto the card from the PC, and start a-new. That isn't my question, though.
I'm really wondering if I can clone an encrypted, internal-storage SD. I don't WANT to have to download my apps again. I don't want to have to rebuild caches and whatever else has been thrown onto my MicroSD.
Thanks!
I've done this before using clonezilla and it worked fine, no issues at all.
It's not as user friendly as a windows application probably.... but it gets the job done by doing an exact copy.
It even has a mode to keep reading on broken sectors (when you go into advanced mode), that way you can make the best copy possible.
You can read some instructions here
I did it directly from 1 card to another by inserting the source card into an adapter with the readonly slider lock thing to make sure I didn't write empty data to my source.
You can also first create an image from the source and then write the image to the new card.
Please keep in mind to not insert both cards at the same time when using Windows, it will crash Windows.
Windows doesn't understand that there could be 2 drives with the same ID's connected at the same time
