How to improve camera quality? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

hi there is there a way to make the camera photos less darker and blurry?

I remember seeing a thread either in the Development forum or the Themes & Apps forum about some edits that can be made to improve camera quality.

Learn how to take photos? Most problems are user-related, no offense.
In many situations its not the camera thats "causing" the issues.

thanks for the reply guys, actualy ive seen a review of the nexus vs s3 and iphone and it said that the camera had worst performance since the pics are darker and less stable so i believe the problem is not just mine

Yeah but the reviews early on used the old firmware with bad camera. Latest update fixed camera quality much better. Its still not superb but better and decent enough. Low light is worst part though.

is there any fix to that besides turning up the lights ?

They are less stable? Just use the focus, and don't move your hand much. I have great pics from my Nexus, they look nice to me, probably not as good as the 4S but still good enough to post on FB.

Like others have said, you can get great pictures from the stock cam if you are steady but try using Camera Zoom FX. It's free on the Play Store. It does a better job of auto focusing then the stock camera.

I read that after updating to 4.0.4 now we're able to press the shutter button and it (manually ) focus then we just have to release our finger from the shutter button and it takes he picture, I updated my nexus but I when I hold the shutter button it doesn't focus, the viewfinder, never turns green :/
Was this just a rumor?
Is there a way to turn auto focus and just use manual focus?
I know you just stand still and wait for the phone to focus but how can I know that the focusing was done correctly?

Some pictures from the nexus camera..the last of them being a low light shot...IMO this camera puts out pretty close IQ to the 4s except in low light where the camera is ****

[thread] galaxy nexus camera shots

Let's post here your (maybe best) photo shots taken with Galaxy Nexus.
Just to share your experience with this 5MP camera, and let everybody make an idea on the quality of the NExus camera.
Thanks in advance to everyone!
Nobody?
Here's a quick one I've just taken.
Only had the phone 48 hours so far and not had much chance to take pictures outside with so little daylight hours.
Good, thank you!
Here is one, I will sent some more later!

Can I post one from my atrix??
On a serious note, those 2 photos look good. Can't wait for my gn to arrive
Thank you guys, but be careful , don't RESIZE images!
Use something like imageshack, or dropbox, but don't resize images.
Thanks.
Uploaded some full res photos now, straight off the camera.

C'mon guys don't be lazy
I've done a low light one.
There was a security light on the area and also had the flash on on the phone... but still low light

I've just uploaded a few pictures onto my blog, along with some of my thoughts.
I don't know if any of the theories I have are correct or not; it's all guesswork

Taken yesterday. Very good weather
Edit: strangely this pic looks great in my gallery, on FB but looks ****ty here. I think it's the size of the photo (100kb)

looks a bit grainy in the corner; still miles ahead of my Atrix camera though
my SGS1's camera was so much better than my Atrix
I get the feeling this camera is just really random, some pics i've seen look truly fantastic, and some are just...whut..?! Hope a software patch can make it more consistent.

same here; like the ones on google+ were really nice
yet some with good lighting i've seen seemed below average.
anyhow; its bound it be an improvement over my craptastic Atrix camera
I love Galaxy Nexus camera. It is super-fast and with the option to tweak the photos on the phone before sharing then with your friend, it works absolutely brilliantly.
The purpose of a camera phone is to be social and on-the-go. You don't go photographing nature with a camera phone. You take pictures of things you happen to witness or find interesting. You take pictures of friends or some food you like. You can easily edit it and share with friends.
The camera of Galaxy Nexus serves those needs better than some 8MP camera would. It is wickedly fast, I can take multiple photos while on the go of a subject and then pick out the one I liked the most.
This photo I took of two dogs that were difficult to take a picture of. The sun had just set, so the forest was already getting dark. I entirely forgot about selecting a proper focus point, but that did not matter. I tweaked the picture a little on the phone, the contrast and colors, added soft vignette and shared it. People loved it.

The purpose of a camera phone is to take pictures of things you cannot put into words and share them. For that purpose I have found Galaxy Nexus camera phone to be perfect.
I remember the camera being rubbish on the SGS2 initially also, and was improved significantly over time with firmware updates. I really hope its the same on this, as the camera is a a little hit and miss for my liking

Same here. I came in here with the express purpose of researching the camera. Side by side shots with other phones show a lot of fuzzy and blurry photos. Hopefully that gets fixed with a firmware update....if it does that will eliminate my last concern with the Nexus.
I think people have hit the nail on the head with the "variable" comments.
Sometimes the pictures are really good - other times not so good. Not finding a pattern as to why yet though!

Bad camera = software problem

I've tested it multiple times. I'll get a perfectly sharp/clear focus, take the pic with absolutely no movement, and as soon as I check the pic in the gallery, it's really soft and somewhat blurry.
I hope Google fixes this because the camera seems to be very capable. Before taking the pic, I can get it to focus perfectly and look very sharp on anything, but as soon as the pic is taken, it's all messed up.
Anyone know if a 3rd party app would fix this?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Not having any issue with the pics. Switching from the camera to the gallery lowers the brightness and also the pictures take a second to process. I showed a professional photographer a picture snapped with this camera and she was impressed. I'll post it, one sec.
EDIT: Picture was double compressed from Google+ so doesn't do it justice. Bottom line is, not having issues over here.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
The camera does seem....blurry...if not grainy? It seems much more like a software problem more than anything though...hope it does get fixed.
I also hope there is a software bug with the camera
It always doesn't want to focus properly, only does its job well when macro shots.

This camera absolutely sucks in comparison to the atrix I just sent for repair.
Both have 5mp.
Nexus takes pics quick but they are very grainy and low quality.
I am not impressed.
with GN camera i think you need to properly focus on subject, i took great pictures yesterday in broad daylight and night, which is the best batch of pictures i've taken so far.
Download the MIUI camera application. Image quality is a bit better and the chances of getting a clear shot are much higher. You don't get the fast shutter speed thought. Its what I use for serious photo attempts.

4.0.2 camera focus different than 4.0.1..

So 4 days in I had to get a replacement because of a screen glass issue, so I started playing before doing the 4.0.2 update that comes up right away. Found the camera actually focuses, lights up the green focus brackets, and takes really great pictures all from holding the camera button... on the old phone and the new after running the 4.0.2 update the camera doesn't focus and light up green brackets when holding the camera button. The touch to focus almost works but hard to get a good picture when you then have to still hit the camera button.?? Am I missing something or did the camera get worse with the update??
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Same here. I was scratching my head over it too.
the continuous auto-focus is already going. you don't need to hold down the camera button. The green brackets dont come up, but that doesnt mean it's not working.
Yeah, I hate the continuous focus, it's too slow. I wished it would force focus when you hold the shutter button, like the HTC Sensation with its zero lag shutter too.

Yep me too, better yet just add both to the options and let the user pick! Dammit!
you can actually hold the camera button first, then touch the area you want to focus. It will capture the image automatically when you release the camera button. Found it easier this way to capture image

Yupe, you can do that, but it's cumbersome ... A lot of hold and click, and still the result is a hit and miss.
As I found out from previous similar discussion (and OP also mentioned), I bought Camera Zoom FX and it produced satisfied focused image.
Although, I lost super fast shutter ... but, I would rather have decent focused image result!

Hold to focus is the bomb. Really miss it now that it's gone.
At least we can still click on the screen to steady the focus. It continues to focus too much. I like the simple camera app and don't see a difference after purchasing Camera Zoom FX. I hope they patch this up.

Yeah its crazy they changed it, it was simple and it worked! Was like every other point and shoot, it focused great- I took some amazing low light pictures on 4.0.1 before doing the update. That's why everyone says the camera sucks on this phone and they probably lost sales of 100,000 units because everyone thinks the cam sucks! Can you adb push the 4.0.1 camera or is this resolved in 4.0.3?

I'm not sure if it's something controlled by the ROM or actual app. Maybe I'll try checking a backup from 4.0.1 and see if there is a discernible difference. I'd like the hold to focus back as well.
Anyone with 4.0.3 who can confirm if this has been fixed or not? I'm also wondering if it's an intended design... I wouldn't know why they'd change it, but maybe there's some hairbrain reason.
this is one reason why i wont upgrade from 4.0.1. the focus works great when you just hold the circle button, it focuses on center with green brackets, and this produces stellar pic quality.
but when you touch to focus on the screen, this is where everybody gets such poor image quality. that's why some people swear this camera sucks, while others say its great. because these 2 methods produce different quality images.
i dont know why google removed this function in 4.0.2.

i'm not so sure. that's what i'm saying, in total darkness i can get rid of the fuzzy focus just using the circle button. the pics actually come out just as sharp. only on 4.0.1.
something is up with this camera software, cause i think the actual hardware sensor isn't all that bad.
+1.. took amazingly detailed photos in pure darkness and low light with 4.0.1.. low shutter lag is worthless if has zero focus!
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
4.0.2 is laggy and the camera is slow and inaccurate to focus. Not the best update. However it does fix the signal issues people like me were having.
I'm hoping 4.0.3 will be a merge of speed and signal.

[Q] Camera disimprovements 4.0.4

Hello,
I updated my Galaxy Nexus manually with the "official" Rom, but since I got android 4.0.4 my camera does have shutter lag instead of android 4.0.2. Is this normal, or did I download the wrong Rom he he?
Thanks in advance

0 shutter lag has been reduced to get better focus image
a well focused images is better, even if it need a bit more time to take the pic

manually flash it. and i agree, whats the point in 0 shutter if all the pictures are going to come out not focused and not clear?
i rather have a more stable camera with better picture quality.
quality over quantity
Now that you mention it, I think my pictures are a tiny bit better on 4.0.4 (Verizon version). Might just be the placebo effect...

well, if you cant complain then ill do it for you, I wouldnt mind having the lag taken away BUT this was a feature, and if the feature didnt work, then its not a feature, so when I was excited about the phone last year, and I heard it was 5mp, I was let down, but then I was sold on 0 shutter lag, now the lag is back so we might have not even talked about the camera last year like it was special.
you cant sell a 1000hp car, first in the market, then after 3 months recall them to govern the engine to 750hp and still get credit for being a ground breaking car, so why should i give any credit to nexus for doing something special with the camera.
I used the time lapse feature today, what a JOKE! you need it propped up, and put it in airplane mode so that a text wont ruin your video, the screen stays on the whole time, you cant turn it off, and the smallest increment is 1 second, i washed dishes for a couple hours and had a 3 minute video that was a pain to watch because there was a window in the room that the camera adjusted for and me the focus was all dark.
I do like the built in photo editing, and the use of facial recognition, but when i saw the nexus get demolished by the one x, i cried, and now with 4.0.4 lagging more just to be a usable 5 mp camera, i think owners have the right to complain that a front page feature has been toned down for stability. though ultimately we want better pictures.
Focus once, don't move, take pictures in a bright area = insta pics.
I take them all the time.
Could you imagine how many EXTRA complaints there would be if it never focused?

This exactly. I take a lot of pictures of moving objects (my kids). Pre 4.0.4 they were *terrible*. They were so poor I bought an Xperia S for the camera. Post 4.0.4 they are now clear and of great quality (on par with the 12MP camera in the Xperia S which is no slouch). Let it focus and snap away. Move, refocus, repeat.
If you are rubbish photographer/videographer why blame the camera?
Like - I pointed camera at a window and everything else was dark. Doh.

[Q] Improving Camera quality

Hi, I bought a Galaxy Nexus on august and it is a really good device, the only thing that I dont like about it is the quality of the pictures of its camera, is it just me or this device has a relly crappy camera?
Have any of you tried to improve its quality using the GNtoolkit or any other method?
If so, please advice...
Thank you very much
Lol the toolkit? really?
The camera performs poorly in low light, and nothing is really going to fix that except... more light. In well lit and composed pictures, the camera has the capability to produce good pictures. They turn out pretty well. This camera isn't the best, but isn't nearly as bad as people like to think. Just check out some of the pictures in the General section. Lots of great stuff in there. It's not impossible to take good pictures with the GNex.
Most issues with the camera can be attributed to the photographer, not the device. There are many camera apps that can help you achieve different affects with your camera (like HDR, scene modes and editing), and there are even some in the stock Gallery.
Don't use the 'zoom'
Beamed from my Grouper.
The best apps that I think produce good quality pics with the Gnex camera are Vignette and HDR Camera+. Honestly I don't ever use the stock camera because I feel they produce the worst pics.
I mentioned the toolkit because I saw an option there, so... Im pretty ****ed right? LOL

I think it is pretty decent. Again I don't compare pics with other phone because missing a few pixels isn't going to make huge difference.

Magic doesn't exist, just making my sanity clear.

I have found that the gnexus camera out performs my HTC sensation , lumia 800 iPhone 4s when it comes to low light pictures. They come out a lot less blurred and precise than the other phones. Day photos are perfectly good for a mobile phone. Want an amazing camera buy a SLR , Facebook photos it does just fine
