[SOLVED][Q] music app "lags" on AOSP/MIUI ROMs - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

solution: increasing buffer size removes the lag, i even increased the buffer's priority just in case...
my music app is kinda lagging... it just hangs and repeats itself for 2-3 seconds then continues fine...
tried:
music app
google music
player pro
musixmatch
all of them do that
ILWT/andromadus/MIUI GB... And some other AOSP ROMs have that...
The thing that's weird is that the music runs fine on sense ROMs, and sense ROM just does fine with music... But i need AOSP, and i can't live without music...
So, any solutions?

Another ROM maybe? But 3 seconds is almost nothing (for me)
Sent from my chair.

its really noticeable.... i was at my "nokia" loving friend, and we wanted to hear a song, and when it lagged, he laughed so hard and said that my phone sucks...
maybe it is the rom... new roms are coming soon.... hope it will be fixed

I noticed the phone hanging up sometimes when I access it after unlocking the phone(need to pull out battery). Noticed this on many miui roms as well as on a few builds of cyanogen.

I also have this issue with ILWT. Music player is laggy and it glitches. It mostly happens when i switch songs, but sometimes it happens during playback. I never had any issues with stock rom.
A fix would be nice

I dont think that everyone is having this issue. If only a few people have it that means there must be a specific cause. So why are our phones so special?

Can you specify this specific cause?
Let's talk about ILWT...
What i did:
Wiped, flashed, resotred my apps, music: laging
Superwiped, flashed, didn't restore any app, music: still laging
Superwiped, flashed, wiped sdcard, put only one song in it, music: STILL LAGING!
The only possible difference is that you may have a G2, while i have a DZ... But that's so not the cause...

i doubt having a g2 or dz would matter. i have a g2 hboot and im running elitemod with little tweeks clocked aroun 1.1ghz, i use google play music to stream and have around a gb of music on a class 6 sdcard. i rearly if ever get a lag in music from sdcard or streaming. i also stream public radio and music from live 365 without any lag. i keep my phone light, apps i rarely use are on ext partition or not on my phone at all, i dont use a task killer but use watchdog to monitor any app that is consuming to much cpu and ususally i take those off my phone or restricted them
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium

I have a DZ. But i dont think its hardware related, because I had no issues with stock rom, so this must be a software bug. And I too have no problems when streaming music from internet, its when listening to music from sd card that is laggy. I really have no idea whats causing it, I guess it might be some app like dsp manager..
Anyway, Im new to this whole rom thing and maybe my wrong ideas will give someone the right idea
Sent from my DZ

MIUI doesn't have dsp manager.... Or any equalizer, and it also lags... Streaming is fine, sense roms are fine... But playing music on the phone's speaker/earplugs and on AOSP lags...
Any help?

I've never had any lag with the music player except for Sense 3.* ROMs where the scrolling was slow and unresponsive. In CM7, the music player is super fast and responsive, the same applies to virtuous g-lite and g2 slim. Music playback was also fast and smooth in MIUI when i used it a while ago. I haven't tried ILWT recently, but i doubt it has something to do with the ROM.
If i were you, i'd do a backup of my sd card, format it, and then put everything back on and see if the lag was still there. If the lag was still there, then i'd try a different sd card. Both the stock and very plain looking music app and google music were always fast on AOSP ROMs for me, so there is something that you haven't considered/done yet on your end.

But, how can you explain the non-laggy sense music... All of the sense roms don't lag on playback, and sense roms in general, lag alot... Except for music though
———————————————

I don't quite know how to explain it either but you can at least try and fix it rather than speculating about the whole smooth Sense vs laggy AOSP music playback. Also have you tried the latest CM7.2 RC? Music playback was fast on that. Make a backup and just try things out and see what works. We're not devs and we probably won't find a dev who can explain this for us, so you may as well just try.

Choppy audio on ULTIMATE DROID v2.0

I happen to use andless to play flac files on my phone, and I've noticed that there is an unbearable lag and tons of choppy audio when on ultimate Droid. Has anyone been able to fix this? Even if overclocked it will lag a ton when I lock it. I don't have setcpu and the phone runs fine aside from the audio. Anyone have any ideas as to what's going on? No. 1st rom that i never replaced it. Until now, i had no problems except for wireless tether failing occasionally, but a reboot would fix it. What kernel do you reccomend? Theres so many and im just not sure now lol...

I can highly recommend invisiblek's #16 kernel found here:

Performance is great, and battery life has been truly epic.

It could - perhaps try stock speeds (no overclocking) and see what that does.
Idk if it was a typo, but what are the file formats in your OP?
Also, have you tried updating to UD 2.4?
Are you using the native UD media player, the themed one, or the Android one?
Finally, do any other media player 'helpers' or media players at all make any difference - example - DSP?

Well, ive tried screwing with the overclocking settings. Stock speeds didnt help though. Im really not sure why. And yea. im running 2.4.0 and uh.... its gotten worse lol. Not sure why. Im listening to FLAC files using andless. as far as i can tell, the music app cannot find them. but they are on the internal memory so idk. Ive switched kernels and its better, basically it just lags like a mofo when i lock it.
It def. seems like a clock speed thing, but leaving it on defaults hasnt helped. Im really not sure. Are there any other good flac players for me to try? maybe the app sucks?
Stumped on this one .... idk anything about flac files.

Does your kernel change performance when you lock it, screen off? Can you use SetCPU to change the screen off performance?
Have you tried UD2.4 yet? Also, 2.5 is suppose to release sometime Sunday or Monday. Maybe the issue has been fixed in one of the last few updates.
Under UD settings and the overclock/underclock feature, what is the minimum clock speed set at? Maybe raising that value would help?

Question with Desire Roms, please help!!

Hi guys,
I got a Desire for testing, I'm trying to make it very stable with everything working. So I have been testing the following ROMS:
Stock (2.2): Very stable, bad energy management, no voice search, ran out of internal memory fast, you cannot switch 2G/3G easily.
Stock (2.3): Good, but wifi drops (Is there a solution for this?), voice search works.
CM7 (Any version, but I think I haven't tested the new RC2): Very good and fast, but the video app is bad I cannot play 720p MP4 (With the stock one it plays fine) I don't want to pay for a videoplayer when the stock and when a SMS is not delivered it doesn't show the option "Send again" (Yes, in some places where I got the network coverage sucks, so I need that feature), no voice search.
Oxygen: No radio FM (I use that), no send again in the sms and no 720p video player, no voice search. Fast.
Ledroid: I haven't had time to create a partition (In fact I need a faster SDCard), but if you use it, does it have voice search? Can you send again failed SMS? Radio FM? 720p video playback?
Sandvol ICS 0.7: Very fast! Good looking, no FM radio, no playback for 720p videos, didn't check about voice search and send again failed SMS. Had some crashing using the camera. I hope it keeps going to the 1.0 version.
So, will I have to create my own ROM (I wish).
Please help me.
It's easy I just want a 2.3 or ICS rom with FM radio, good video playback 720p, not bloatware, send again failed SMS, etc. Stable...!
http://forum.oxygen.im/viewtopic.php?id=2365
Android 2.3 - check.
FM support - check.
720p plaback - check.
No bloatware - check.
Everything working & stable - check.
You wont find anything better than that.
Use Oxygen r2 hboot if you're S-OFF.

Yes to both questions.
For the longest time I have been using the ROM in my signature as my daily driver. I liked the ring lockscreen etc but:
1. 2.3 with sense 2.1 / 3.0 or hybrids of the two
Battery life, it's abysmal compared to stock gb or froyo, even leedroid was waaaaaay better. Speed is good, but there is always some lag, if you count a steamboat or two after unlocking the screen then using it the lag is minimal. Battery life though, fantastic if you don't use your phone. If you use it, epecially for calls (you know, as a phone!) you can drain it fast
2. Sense 3.5 ROMs
All the eye candy is there. Truth be told, the sense 3.5 email app, and music are pretty sweet. The new amaze camera is awesome. There is much less lag with the lock screen too. Overall though, be prepared for lags, lockups, sense restarts, reboots et al. All of the runny ROMs, and I do mean all of them run fast and smooth for a few days, then lag immensly.
3. Gingerbread "stock / old" sense 1.9 ROMs
There are a few good ones, andler, droidzone, and coolsense are a few updated ones
Battery life is great on all of them, you can actually use your phone! Storage space is a non event (I run 130 apps) on all.
After much testing, because I got tired of constanly flashing new kernels in the search for the best speed / battery life compromise with sense 2.1 ROMs, I prefer coolsense 3.0 by coolexe. This ROM is a themed "old sense (1.9)", or basically stock gingerbread with a few extras, like quick settings on the notification menu. I have been on this for 2 weeks now, no slow downs, reboots, minimal lag (same as stock gb), and has all the features you asked about. I may have to change my sig soon, I may have found my new daily driver.

Leedroid is good, but unless your comfortable tweaking on your own coolsense is more upto date.
You will need a a partioned SD card for most newer ROMs, use gparted. It is available as a bootable cd if you do not use a Linux distro.
Also, google alpha rev for mtd partions, then use fastboot manager or something similiar to quickly switch between hboots when testing ROMs.

Need help finding ROMs, choosing which to try

I am trying to flash my Inc with a new ROM for the first time, but it seems like more than half the ROMs on this page are either removed by the developer or cant be downloaded because the download links are dead.
Any tips on what to try first, based on what available still? The only thing I am concerned with is that the ROM is stable and compatible with as many of the stock functions as possible, stuff like broken radios is not what I am looking for right now. Would be kinda cool to try one as different from stock as possible. Does CM7 work well on the Inc? I keep seeing people talking about stuff that is broken with it.

Ice Cream Sandwich. Abduction by Hanger84 is smoother than the Sense ROMs.
Sent from my Incredible using XDA
Abduction is good to try if you want to experice ice cream.... but prepare for some bugs and missing features ( ie Camcorder, camera, & flash on websites and netflix) I suggest one of the gingerbread Roms or Froyo Roms. CM 7 or 8 should be fine, but you loose some of the things you may be accustomed to in Sense (Widgets). But there are pretty good apps that can do what sense does, you just have to look for them.
I'm using CM 7.2 RC1 (RC2 crashes right away for me) with latest ICS Incredikernal and SmartassV2 governor, fully over-clocked. Never crashes, everything works but, of course, 720p recording. I even found decent settings for auto-brightness (Make about 16 levels, start out at ~70, go up in ~5 point increments, then increase. Set Window Length to 5 secs). I have tried three ICS roms but always went back.
I'm using the new Go Launcher but it has a couple of bugs. Clear its data to get the large icons if you are stuck on small. To change settings on the large weather clock you have to do it via the small weather clock.
I use CyanogenMod 7.2. Along with Chad/Tiny's Incredikernel, Jermaine/Tiny's EXT4All mod, and Launcher Pro. Speedy and battery efficient. The latest RC should be fine, I'm on one of the nightlies and have been using Pons' KANGs when his computer was still working.
In addition to Sonny Sekhon's Ice Cream Sandwich CM7 Theme.
If you like the stock ROM, and want something stable and based off of it, Liberation 3.0 is a good choice. It is basically a rooted, debloated, stock ROM. I keep a copy on my SD card incase I need access to EPST or just feel like using Sense.
ICS is getting there, but the laggy animations and general speed have kept me away. It seems to me that the current hardware acceleration isn't 100% implemented. But I have never used ICS outside of the Incredible. So I don't have room to compare.
I'm with the majority here. CM 7.2 RC2 is great. I actually have stock kernel though, I am not sure if performance is better with incredikernel but I can tell you that CM7 is TONS better than stock in terms of battery life, customization, and overall android experience. I like sense but on the Inc, it's like they stopped trying...
P.S. - I also use GO Launcher EX with kovdev's ICS theme.
Well I just switched from Abduction to CM9 and so far CM9 is much better!!

I use a app called play on for YouTube Netflix and a lot of other video sites.. yea the camera fix seems to break playback on YouTube.. but I'm optimistic that those issues will be worked out since cm9 is still in development. What I love is that every feature u find in other Asop roms u can get apps that do that... so u can customize it better for your own personal taste and still have better stability!!!!!

Ok before I started getting replies here I dl'd Touch of Blue and Stock+, tried ToB for the week and it was ok but started to crash and lag a lot. The latter may have been due to my SetCPU settings, I dunno, but it was getting hung up on simple apps, and I did not like a couple things about it, like getting calls when the screen is off required you to unlock it, then unlock it again at the receiving call screen. Also didnt like the battery meter.
Just installed Stock+ and immediately realized it wouldn't work at all when I saw that the App Data partition was still at 150MB. Thats the whole reason I rooted, so there is no way I am using a ROM that is eventually gonna give me the Low space messages again.
GOnna try the ones you guys suggested now
I like Wildstangs stock ROM, and gtiny's kernel. I used root app delete to debloat it. And run the on demand deadline settings and can go 11 hours on a full charge with heavy use.
I also like the last stable release of CM7.1.0 it is smoking fast and way less issues then the nightlies or kangs to me.
Sent from my ADR6300 using xda premium
CM7.2 couldn't figure out how to add my Google account. Also couldnt disable the camera shutter sound.
Tried Liberation but the App Data partition is still only 150MB; as soon as I restore my apps its gonna be out of space again.
ALL ROMs for the Incredible are going to have a 150 MB data/data partition. It's the way HTC made it. The only way around it is with the EXT4All mod. More information here. The file you're looking for to remove the limit is "Convert2Ext4_no_data_limit_normal_dalvik.zip".
And there is an options in the CM7 sound settings to disable the shutter sound. Called "Mute camera shutter".
Ok I found the camera sound setting, thanks. Any advice on getting the Google account to work? The Account settings were trying to setup an email thing, not my Google account
EDIT:
Figured out that I need to flash the Google apps pack on CM7 to get that all to work, but ClockworkMod kept failing to mount the pack when I tried to install it. Now I am back on Liberation, because at least here I have my Google account with contacts, but I cannot get the EXT4 fix to work. I download it, open it with Clockwork, tell it to reboot and apply, but it fails to mount it, just like the Google apps pack problem. Using Clockwork 5.0.2.0

Music distorting on ICS?

I experience music distorting when I hold down my home button key (to get to recent apps) or sometimes taping different places on the phone . It doesn't happen with the stock music player(only happens with apps like Player Pro, Power Amp, N7 player, Music Mod, Datpiff) and I know it's not my phone or a bad download.. Because all other audio on my phone is fine (YouTube, phone calls, stock player, alarm sounds etc).. Kinda bothering me especially since I shelled out money for some of these music player programs which are now useless (got them while I was on Gingerbread and never had that "distorting problem)
*Set up is in my signature of what I'm currently running*
When your running your music app try and see if you get any CPU spikes. Sounds like your ram could be running low . Since the real source code for Ics is coming soon that could fix it. have you tried rebooting your phone? I know your running blu Kubans ROM. Go to the updater and try another kernel. These are just thoughts so my two cents may not help any.
Also did you notice these issues before any of RUs updates? if not try to revert back to one of the other updates or even ask him on his thread

Also did you notice these issues before any of RUs updates? if not try to revert back to one of the other updates or even ask him on his thread

What app would you recommend to monitor cpu spikes. And if my ram is running low how could I fix that?
I've tried different kernels (agats numerous ones). And no avail.. Also tried rebooting.. But it had happened on all the updates, tried asking on the thread but I'm the only individual with the issue
I just use a stock player im not picky. I went back to GB roms so I use the ROM manager to see how much ram is being used. For the CPU I'm sure the market has some apps for CPU usage. Have you tried clearing the cache for the music apps you own? are they up to date? They may not be compatible with ics roms yet.

AOSP ROMs and Google Play Music

Up till fairly recently, Google Play Music has played pretty well flawlessly in AOSP ROMs, but with the most recent builds of PACMAN, Paranoid Android, and Liquid Smooth, if I do anything else on the phone, the music skips, and that's no good.
Is there a fix for this? I tried making it so the phone doesn't underclock and that didn't change anything, so I don't think it's a lack of power. It also doesn't happen in Pandora, and you'd figure it'd happen there if it was anything to do with the music playing capability.
Also, while I have your attention, what is the difference between the unofficial AOKP and the other ROMs that makes it so that specific version of AOKP is the only AOSP ROM I've found that renders Google Play Music's album art properly?
Either way, <3 the AOSP ROM developers on this phone.
Hi,
I have never messed with voltage until yesterday, where I brought every voltage for cpu speeds down 25mA. Immediately after I did that, I noticed this problem, except my gs3 only does this when unlocking/locking the device. Hope this helps add to the thought process of someone smarter than me who will likely answer this question for us ^.^
Is this on the 4.2.2 builds? If it is...expect issues on those, the source for the official 4.2.2 has not been released yet (and no OTA yet) so remember that all of this functionality has to be built from the ground up
As soon as source is available, small bugs like this should be squashed
That's it! It's the shift to 4.2.2. That's the difference.
I'll be patient, I suppose.
I'm really hoping for a ROM that doesn't have any game breaking bugs, soon. We're so close.

I found a fix, for anyone else that's having the problem.
Just turn off touch sounds. Done. It works perfectly.
Now to fix the Google Play Music album art rendering bug that all ROMs except for the unofficial AOKP seem to have.
I don't have any touch sounds and I only use haptic feedback on call pickup/hangup and on the power widget. Can that effect it too?...

Any sound playing can effect it, even the volume turning up/down sounds.
