Bought a cable that adapts to USB so that I could put a memory stick into my NOTE
Plugged it in with a stick and after three file manager apps found out it was stored under SDcard USBstorage ------ funny location????
Anyway eventually found a file manager that could copy multiple files and sent a few down to the stick
All looked well ---- could see them on the stick
Pulled down the options and unloaded the stick.... took it out and put it in the PC
File manager could see it JPG files all looked well
Nothing pulls them up! They are not recognised at all despite the JPG extension
????
Looked at the properties of the file and it says they are not JPG but JIFF images?
Tried rename it says it cant see the file - then creates a copy with the JIFF extension
Still noting will read them ???
anyone any ideas?
Any comment appreciated
pete
I just tested using ES File Explorer.
I copied a photo taken with the Note's camera to a USB stick, put it in my laptop and was able to view it fine in Windows explorer and using Picasa.
It had the same filename and extension as the phone.
If you copy other file types (a word doc or mp3 etc.) does the extension change also?

No the extension does not change - I changed it to see if it could read it?
Tried linking the phone direct to the computer without the stick etc and the computer could see the phone and SD card OK ---- but when I tried to read them from the phone with XNView it seemed to not see them
Copies all the JPG files from the phone to the computer and they read OK?
Something weird?
Still baffled with the stick thing
Going around in circles - thought the stick would be a good way of backing up my photos when I was away from the PC - but it dont work?
pete
hmmm. that is weird. What file manager app are you using to copy to the USB stick?
If it's just backing up your photos that you want, drop box might be useful. It automatically backs up any photos I take.
It's a bit of a pain to have to go through dropbox to delete all of the "junk" photos that you don't really want to keep, but it's a simple solution that I don't have to think about and I'd rather do a little clean up every now and then, then lose a photo I really wanted.
You can set it to only back up over wifi, or both wifi and mobile data.
[edit] It's also weird that if you can't view pics on the phone via the PC.
I can connect via either MTP or external USB and browse my phone using Windows Explorer. If I double click on a photo in my DCIM folder it opens up on my PC using my default viewer (Picasa).

Think there must be a problem with the cable
Connected the phone direct with another cable and I can see the folders (directories) on that so at least I can do it that way!
Dropbox is a good idea will try that too
Thanks

Just found it, did any one test it?
It claims to be able to connect to your pc web and exchange files.
My pc is down but trial app shows available space on the phone correctly.
Just having a quick play with it now. It seems to be able to create folders on your phone, although what use that is I'm not sure. Will see what happens
Nothing fancy going on here really. You can create a file explorer and do all kinds of file and folder manipulations in your apps isolated storage. You just can't manipulate anything outside of it.
Transferring files from your pc to phone and vice versa is rather simple to code. There's code samples on microsofts wp7 development forums.

Fair point but that means:
1. It shows you can have access to storage without zune and that is all in all step closer to proper file explorer
2. Bluetooth pictures, music or document transfer is possible by means of an app so some one might make one
3. Using your phone as flashdrive via usb can also be made to work via app

so for an eBook or comic book reader, they just have to make the reader able to import the files from the PC and store them in their own sandboxed area correct?

Yep seems that is the case.
It is very good news as that means we will have flashdrive apps or BT storage apps quite quick.
It will need to last till phone is hacked.
True... but you you won't be able to transfer files to/from the phone from any desktop computer.
Software will need to be installed on the desktop computer and the phone app needs to be setup to talk to that piece of software.
It is conceivable that somebody could write a single piece of software for desktops that could then communicate with any number of apps on the phone to transfer files between.

Well not exactly correct. With pcconnector yes but some smart person can make a app that takes control over usb and when you start it simulates flash drive rather then HTC HD7. USB knows what device is connected as that devices tells it what it is. All you need is a app that will say I am a X,Z or Y flash drive.
The same way original one worked diferance was it was showing SD card and for WP7 it would have to be a folder.
I had it in my Nokia, so simple.
Is there a way to open and transfer the files at my DHD through my PC via Bluetooth?
I hate this cables that I need to plug in just to transfer 3MBs..
I want to make this "Removable Disk [E]" but via Bluetooth connection,
not sending file like (right click > share > bluetooth, and then it sends to my phone)
I want a full access, opening my DCIM folder, deleting files, and renaming..
Is there a software or app to make it?
I could do it very easily with my old N95 with its software "Nokia PC-Suite",
I could just enter the software (through keyboard shortcut that I made), and few seconds later, by no touching, no connecting any cable, it would open my phone's folder.
I miss that easy life
How can I do it here too?
Thanks,
Yarden.
There is similar apps called Wifi Explorer Pro...as it name states, it uses wifi though...if it suits you, it can explore, download or upload any files from and to your desire hd...using wifi...much faster than using bluetooth though...i hope it helps you
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using XDA App
Use MyPhoneExplorer and wifi. It's what I do to sync contacts, calendar and files.
Dave
First of all thank you for your replies.
But both apps aren't really what I'm looking for,
I'll explain my self again,
I want a pc software (not necessarily) that when I open it, it searches via bluetooth (or as new as you teached me, via WiFi), for my phone and open its files, like it would do if I plugged the USB cable.
That it gives me a new drive (C,D,E,F...) with all the mobile contents (folders, music, pictures ..etc)
I use web sharing it gives me full access to my sd card.

How exactly do you do that?
you mean like on the windows 7 "Homegroup"?
can you explain please how to use it?
So, I have a bunch of MP3s in a folder called media my music player refuses to read. I also have a bunch of music copied over in a music folder, which play fine. Both appear to be on my internal storage. So, I tried to move the music from the media folder to the music folder, and they wont move. I renamed the folder using root explorer, and the name doesn't change on internal storage when I mount. I can find the renamed folder through ES file explorer. I don't get it. This MTP sucks, this shouldn't be an issue, I should just be able to copy over files, they should be there, and be playable. Starting to not like this phone so much.
Mtp is a bit of a pain in the arse sometimes. Try putting it into ptp instead, should show all folders then.
Or stop hassling with cables altogether and install something like WiFi File Explorer Pro from the market.

Believe it or not, not everyone has a router at home. Also, nothing beats drag and drop, much simpler and faster.
O.P try uninstalling the drivers and install the Samsung drivers before connecting the phone again. Or try PTP instead like 318vert said.
I had this problem with wallpapers in gallery.
I think I made the folder from the computer while it was connected. Then copied over. I did it a few times. Also try making the folder on your phone and try.
With music, I just put them in the already created music folder.

Of course. But since the OP has problems with MTP, this is another way to get around it (disclaimer: only for those with a wifi router).
Plus you get around plugging cables, which I don't like.
OP: If you are running Win XP, make sure you have Windows MediaPlayer 11 installed. It's apparently tied to the MTP drivers somehow.
Might seem weird but I have no issues with it at all, but I have wondered what the "media" folder is, I don't put my media in there.
Example (Movies>(All movies here)TV> (All TV here) )
And for Music I just made a music folder and threw it all in there.
I think the media folder is for something else. Just try making a movies and music folder.
I've not got an Sd card in my swift so pictures are stored locally. I can see the picture files on the phone using astro file manager. The problem is when I connect to Pc via usb and set the connection to file transfer (or picture sync) windows doesn't see the folder so I can't transfer the pictures across. I can see they are in Dcim\camera using astro on the swift but that folder doesn't show in windows - I'm using windows 7. It can see whatapp/facebook images on the swift though. Drawing a blank as to what to do next. Anyone got any ideas. TIA
It won't solve the usb connection, but maybe you can work this around by uploading your photos to Google Photos or Drive from your phone, then downloading them from those websites on your PC.
Hope it helped (;

I have the same problem connecting a wileyfox swift mobike to a windows 10 laptop. It shows the wileyfox swift as an empty folder. I have tried Bluetooth successfully.
I had this problem also until I checked the following on my Swift:
Settings/Developer Options/Select USB Configuration
Mine was set to MTP (Media Transfer Protocol). To transfer photos it must be set to PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol). When the phone is connected via USB to Windows 10 the icon showing in This PC should be a camera. The frustrating thing is that having selected PTP the phone seems to randomly change back to MTP or Charging on occasions so always, always check you have the appropriate configuration.
All I need to do now is figure out how to get the camera to save pictures on my SD card and not the internal memory in the first place. Can anyone help with that please?

Just an update to my last reply:
I have found a quicker method of achieving this. When the phone is connected via usb swipe down from the top and the connectivity status is displayed. It is possible to change the connectivity status here instantly without the need to go into Settings. For some reason I can now transfer photos from either PTP or MTP. Perhaps in the past whenever I tried it was set to Charging and not MTP as I thought. (I did say it has a habit of randomly changing itself)
Thanks for this, just downloaded a thousand photos that I thought I'd only be able to get by emailing them to myself. Thanks again, Pete
I can no longer transfer mp3 files from my Windows computer to my P6P. I have moved plenty of music to internal storage, but now can no longer get anything over. Only the album folder shows up, but no contents. I believe I am doing everything correct with the USB cable, connecting and then selecting file transfer. This is a new development. Any suggestions? Very frustrated.

Yes, I see the Pixel internal storage in file manager, and all the music folders already there. Now when I try to transfer an album the new folder shows up but none of the mp3 files. Even when I then try to transfer the files individually

Question, are you transferring then unplugging to check if they transferred? Sometimes windows and android have a hard time communicating...this is jokingly called the "middle school dance" where both see each other but both don't make the first move to update what has been done.
Sometimes I transfer stuff but windows explorer never updates what has actually transferred.
Absolutely what @Gytole said. And it's not just Windows' built-in File Explorer. Other programs like GPSoftware's Directory Opus also have the same problem with views of the phone's storage across MTP.
@gmfeld Have you checked on the phone itself if you can see the files that you think you copied recently?
Try rebooting - both the phone and the computer?
Yes I checked my phone after unplugging. Weird, the last time I tried 4 files transferred out of 20. I rebooted my phone I will try rebooting my computer
I've rebooted my phone and computer and have tried every way I can think of. Four out of 20 files were transferred to my phone internal storage and I cannot get the rest of the mp3 files of the same album to copy over. This must be new to me with the latest update.

Thanks. I also already have a lot on there, this is something new for me.
I've loaded mp3s on mine (through musicbee sync) on mays firmware so i don't think it's tied to that. Are you on May or one of the betas (june's or 13)
I also transfered boot to downloads via explorer but that was on april
I'm almost willing to bet it's a driver issue. Windows is NOTORIOUS for "Hey! I see you're working but let's go ahead and install a different driver cause I want to piss you off."
Legit happened to me after I updated Evo to version 3 yesterday. I went into the bootloader, updated the rom, and when I went to copy over the boot.img there was no "Picel 6 pro" in explorer...I had to open device manager and choose the middle MTP driver from the "choose from list" to get it to see my P6P again makes me wanna freakin hit a baby sometimes.

I was about to do the test, but was having some problems with MTP seeing the contents of a very deep folder structure of some of my FLAC files (which already exist on my P6P's internal storage), and then I remembered that actually, when I copy large amounts of and/or large sizes of files, I do so through an intermediary - usually a MicroSD card through a simple non-powered USB-C hub (using X-Plore File Manager).
Now that I've reminded myself of that, I don't even want to attempt to do the same kind of thing through MTP. It's painful and actually takes longer than copying to a MicroSD card first. Figures, eh?
Maybe ADB pull command works better.
Edit. adb push
I just was about to test Xender - Share Music Transfer, but connecting wirelessly to a PC requires enabling a hotspot on the phone and connecting the PC to the hotspot. Still worth testing, but I'll have to do that from a PC that my constant internet connection isn't critical on - so sometime later when I have time to do that.
This seems to be more common when the stock USB C to USB C cable that was included with the phone is not used. Granted, very few people have a USB C port on their computer right now, haha.
Anyway, I would have issues making 60GB video file transfers onto my phone - not because the phone wasn't showing up - but because the file transfer process would just randomly close explorer.exe on Windows after transferring a few files. Once I started using the stock USB C to C cable, this issue stopped occuring (and the transfers were much faster).
But, of course, if Windows isn't even detecting your phone you may have to install the Google Pixel USB driver (and also be sure to enable file transfer on your phone when you connect it to the computer).
So it's not an issue with my phone, as I'm able to transfer mp3 files from my work Windows computer to my P6P using a stock (non-Google) cable. Could it be some setting on my home Windows computer?

It's a driver issue on your computer. Remove the driver (uninstall it from device manager), restart computer and let it reinstall.
Don't install Google USB drivers since that's for USB debugging/fastboot. Let windows install the driver by itself.
If that doesn't work, there was a post someone made recently that shows how to reinstall the default windows driver, here.

I think you mean usually illegal, which is of course nonsense. I only use local file and get them from amazon (and formerly emusic). I hate streaming because the ads (though youtube music inserts those in local file too) and data required
