[Q] General questions about significance of heat, battery, sense reloading issues - HTC One X

Hi guys,
I've been waiting for the SGSIII announcement before deciding on a new phone, and am currently torn between them. I've been reading a lot of the threads here, but naturally for some of the potential issue people are more likely to post if they've actually experienced it so it's hard to tell how significant it is.
BACKGROUND: I first had an HTC Hero and LOVED sense. Then I moved to an original Galaxy S because I love AMOLED screens (I don't care about colour accuracy, I love extreme saturation and contrast). I then moved to the SGS II last year.
However, I have always hated Touchwiz and themed and rommed the heck out of it to look more like stock ICS. I've always looked back at Sense with envy though.
So the following questions are the major things holding my back from a One X:
1) Is heat an issue? My SGS II would get hot on the front with web browsing on max brightness after a while and playing games, and I have the new iPad that gets very toasty, but I wouldn't want anything that can actually be concerning or affect my usage (eg: the need to stop playing games for a while or adjust screen brightness). Also does it warm up when doing non-game tasks like web browsing or general non-game apps?
2) I always use my phone on max brightness, how much screen-on time could I expect on a single charge? Is anyone coming from an SGS II able to comment on if the battery life feels longer or shorter than the SGSII?
3) I've heard a few people complaining of it and experienced it on an in-store demo One X, so how often does Sense like to spend a few seconds reloading after exiting an app? Is it frequent or a rarity?
4) While I'm aware that some One X have creaking / shifting glass at the top edge (an in-store demo model I tried had it), has anyone had it develop over time or should you be able to know out of the box if you have a dud?
5) Does the white model pick up marks / discolouration from sitting in pockets without a case?
Thanks in advance for your help guys.

1)no
2) not long
3)barely ever
4)duno not had it yet
5)picks up marks but can be easily removed

1. Heat isn't an issue unless you live in a particularly hot place. Think 36+ celcius room temp.
2. Max brightness on the HOX can really blind you. It's stupidly bright and even at 30% brightness is very very visible. I just leave the auto brightness on, it's been working very well I get an average of 3.5 hours screen time with 3g always on, and playing graphically intensive games.
3. Sense only reloads if the app you're using uses more than the system has free. So it clears Sense from RAM since it's not being used right that moment for the app you ARE using at that moment. Some ROMS have an option to keep it in RAM, which eliminates the restarts.
4. I received a good copy, and have no experience with any physical defects other than a slight yellow tint at the bottom, hardly noticeable unless you're looking for it.
5. Scuff marks would probably be hidden better on the white one, but regular wear and tear dirt would probably make the white a ....brown xD

Heat has been a huge issue for me.
I have 2 HOXs, both UK T-Mob. Both get terribly hot.
Playing games whilst charging causes it to overheat (battery temps in excess of 55*c, uncomfortably hot to the touch).
I also use it as a wifi hotspot (again whilst charging) and it stays quite warm.
The other day I was on the phone, using it as a hotspot and charging it simultaneously it got VERY hot, to the point I couldn't comfortably hold it to my face. I happened to be topless at the time and absent misguidedly placed it on my stomach, camera side down. That physically hurt, the camera ring was painfully hot.
(To preempt any "well don't do that then" comments, none of my usage is at all unusual. My old handset (Desire HD) could manage that fine. The overheating is poor design)
These temperatures are unacceptable in my opinion, but there's not a lot to be done about it I'm afraid! At the end of the day, I still think the HOX is the best handset on the market currently, I'm not a fan of the galaxy (aesthetics + AMOLED is grainy).
The phone doesn't seem to have suffered any actual damage from the extreme heat by the way.
My honest advice is to wait. Every handset that I have purchased on launch day (Xperia x10, DHD, HOX) has had MASSIVE teething troubles amongst its user base.
The HOX will probably improve, buy one in a few months, or go for one of the other phones that may be out by then!
Above all, buy from a reputable retailer with a great customer service record (Amazon would be a good choice IMO).

[Q] Should I get it?

Here's a little background, on Saturday I got a Galaxy S and it was screwed(No 3 button modes), I got another SGS and it had the same issue. Not to mention that its GPS was a bit screwed. Now I'm not being against SGS, its an awesome phone and honestly I'm a bit skeptical for switching after my 6 hour experience with the phone but I need another phone.
Now I'm thinking the next best option, HTC Desire. I need a ROMable phone with good community around it, the phone itself needs to be fast(Or with the ability to be fast), the touch needs to be good(Very important, I'm used to an iPod Touch, so I want a touch experience close to the iTouch, I mean snappy, quick and accurate). I know it has a relatively bad Multi-Touch but is it really that bad? Does it support 3-point or greater touches?
Also how is the gaming experience on it? I know it has a weaker GPU than Desire but is it absolutely bad?
Note : The comparison/experience need not be from stock ROM, it can be from any ROM as long as it is available in the wild.
EDIT : Also how is the screen if Desire when compared to SGS, iTouch 3G(iPhone 3GS)? I know its a bit smaller than SGS but would it make a difference?
Multi touch is a no, it's 2 point only I believe...
Still best phone I've had, better than iPhone 3GS IMO - not used the SGS but have heard a number of bad things about it
Best thing you can do is have a go on one, then you can make up your own mind
I'd still like some opinions before I go into the store. The problem is here you actually don't get to try it before purchasing it, stores are skeptical due to the theft.
How is the touch experience in general?
I came from an HD2 and it was night and day compared to that in terms of the screens!! I'd say it's comparable to the iPhone 3GS in terms of text input but as I've not properly used an iPhone I can't say more than that. I've had no issues with the touch personally, I'd say it's a blinding phone and best I've ever used
Have you tried playing games on the Desire? Is it good in terms of gaming?
Only game I've played is Angry Birds and for that it's fine - end of the day it's a phone so I use it as one (email, calls, SMS) so can't comment more than that

Gaming is fine - if the controls are appropriate for the Desires touch screen. I've no problems with games like Nova, Skies of Glory, Dungeon Hunger, Angry Birds etc.
As to the GPU, yes it is weaker than the one in the Galaxy S, but to be honest when I do play I can't say I can really notice it. It certainly isn't a bad GPU, it's just not as fast as the PowerVR GPU in the Samsung and iPhones.
That being said, if phone gaming was only of my primary requirements, I would probably buy an iPhone anyway, though the gap is definitely narrowing!
Regards,
Dave
P.S. Note that two points is still more than one, so it does have multi-touch!
If anyone even dares to suggest me iPhone in this thread I'll shoot them in an instance . Not that it is a bad phone, I've decided to not go with it.
Multi-touch aside, is the normal touch application good? Is the screen accurate and responsive? I'm talking about the problems faced with touch screens such as applying too much pressure for it to recognize a command, the screen not being responsive etc. Especially in typing.
Is their really a big difference between 3.7" and 4.0" screen? Also, is the screen on Desire good when compared to other high-end handsets(Xperia, Galaxy, iPhone)?
Also, what are the chances for it to be completely bricked? Not that I'd intentionally do something bad(I'm quite good at flashing I guess, I've flashed my dad's Herald numerous times).
Also the most important thing, how is the GPS? I plan on using MyTracks with it to record tracks for 4-6 hours. Basically my dad is documenting the locality with photos and he goes on for 4-6 hours every day taking photos and 360 degree panoramas of different places. We'd like to Geotag them but my camera doesn't support it, so we plan on tracking it with MyTracks and then patching it with Apple's Aperture.
MyTrak as in Snooper? I work for them!!
General touch screen is just as good as an iPhone - it's a capacitive screen so little contact is needed to use and I've had no problems with it at all. Colours are vibrant too (but I've got an AMOLED screen, new ones tend to have the SLCD screen which is slightly less vibrant apparently)
The 3.7" screen's fine to view and a lot easier in the hand than my old HD2 (although it was a nice unit to use - shame about WM6.5)
My Tracks, as in Google's My Tracks. It records your GPS movement for a desired amount of time.
How is the screen's test? My biggest complain with HTC's Herald was that the screen could break very easily, is the screen on Desire strong? Can it stand scratches from objects like keys, coins or sharp objects? Is it drop-friendly?
I've a Martin Fields protector on mine and it's in its official case at all times when not in use but it is a glass screen so is still strong. I never have it in a pocket with anything else as a precaution, though

Just to help make things clear

With all the bad press, reviews an bug reports on here latley i rekon it has put a lot of people off getting this awesome peice of kit so just to clear the air when all is said and done would you still get the One X again i would for sure

It's not always that simple. There are three types of issues:
1) S/W which is correctable over time. HTC's future rests on the success of the One line so I have confidence the X will be updated as frequently as necessary. A lot of the issues reported seem (to me) to be s/w related.
2) H/W issues which fall in to two categories. The first being random production defects which don’t affect every device equally. The second category is consistent failings that affect every device (like the black One S's coating chipping off). The majority of h/w issues I've seen posted seem to fall in to the first category.
3) Design flaws. The Sensation antenna-gate issue is an example of this. So far the One X doesn't seem to have any of these.
Even with all that's been posted I ordered one that's due to arrive tomorrow. If it performs well, it stays. If it's flaky (beyond what's reasonable for a new device), it goes back.
Everyone's expectations are different and both the happy and unhappy need to be respected.
I like the phone and it will not be going back. There isn't a single phone on the market in my opinion that matches it when it comes to its combination of looks and specifications and shear wow factor. Its taken me almost 8 months to pick a phone that met all of my requirements after coming from the original Desire.
I am not a hard core phone gamer (But i can be if i want to be now), I am not someone that needs endless memory cards for tonnes of music and video (I have a PC for this, transfer rates are super fast, so it really isn't a hard ship, plus there is dropbox), I do not need a replaceable battery as I have a technet 7000mah portable which is great, its also just as portable as a spare battery anyway (Not that I have had any cause to use it yet).
I also have the white version, so shouldn't have any paint issues.
Yes it has Sense 4.0 which tends to hang every now and then, yes the video camera isn't as good as it will be, all of which are software, and WILL be fixed. Yes it has a rattle when you shake it like an idiot next to your ear, but I will never need to do that unless there is a Maraca app!
Its a mass produced product, as is the case with EVERYTHING mass produced there are batches that have faults and experience issues. Look at the mighty Apple I-Phone! Slight rant over
Yes of course ure correct thats why i feel people need a better idea of those who have the device are they happy knowing and waiting for fixes or would they have choosing different. My reason for post is that theres a lit of people went down the one S route due to all the posts here. Of course there is reason to complain just wanted people to no that im sure there are others like me happy knowing that the fixes will come an the device is great
Mod or Die
The difference in price between the S and X isn't that far apart. I think I would get a sense of buyers remorse 6 months down the line if I went for the S.

I was going to order white, then I changed my order for grey. Then I was having second thoughts so I went to look at them both in a shop before my order arrived. So glad I went for grey now

Good thread. I was surprised to find so many negative comments about the One X on here. It's cutting edge, possibly even bleeding... I bought mine in the knowledge that there may be some teething problems, but I'm more likely to still have something "current" in 18 months as the 2 year contract nears it's end. There are't many phone's that is true of.

I came to the One X from a Desire. This is my 3rd HTC mobile and I've loved all of them. I have really enjoyed having the Desire and it's been superb for build quality, reliability and always looked great. Having dozens of lovely roms to play with once it was rooted made all the difference after I became bored with Sense.
So, it was a no brainer for me to choose the One X. Quad core, Tegra 3, that lovely huge, curved screen and ICS were too good to pass up. The phone is stunning and I was most surprised at the looks when I put it beside my Desire. There really is no comparison at all.
It's incredibly fast. I've never used a phone so quick before. The new minimalist Sense is a joy to use and ICS is a great improvement for Android. The screen feels like silk to touch and hasn't attracted much in the way of fingerprints at all. It's lovely to use, very responsive, accurate and image quality is mind blowingly good. Although I don't have the official headphones, Beats Audio does sound fab through a pair of Sennheisers. It ramps up the bass, which is the weakest part of the closed back headphones I have. And so on and on. This mobile is amazing in many ways.
That's the pro's. The con's are:
1. Screen and case don't match up properly. There's a minute gap between the screen and the case along the top and down the left side of mine. This is not normal and classed as a fault by HTC (I asked them). After only 1wk, there's a tiny white strand of cloth under my screen. It can't be seen until the screen is black and it's in the corner. But, as I said to T-Mobile and HTC on the phone today; if it's collected something under the screen after 1wk, what is it going to look like after a few months? HTC said it's a definite fault and should be returned for a replacement. I will be doing so next week.
2. Gripes with the Tegra 3 performance. I know others have seen this on a few games, but for my Desire to easily outperform this phone when playing Stair Dismount is a real disappointment. Secret Exit Ltd answered my request for help earlier very quickly, so I'm really chuffed that a dev is prepared to at least try. I'm not sure whether this is something to do with the game or the phone, so will wait and see. Still a pain though. Interestingly, Stair Dismount also plays very well on my ASUS Transformer, which has Tegra 2.
3. Slight worry about the power button. As the Desire had other hardware buttons, I could assign one of those to wake the phone to take the strain off the power button being used so much. Not possible with this phone. I'm hoping it will be ok.
4. The camera lens cover. If it were Gorilla glass, I'd be happy. If it were recessed enough to not be threatened with being scratched every time I put down my phone, it wouldn't be a problem. So, it begs the question: why the hell did they make the lens cover out of simple glass and the rest of the case out of materials seemingly unbreakable in normal use? Very bad design decision.
5. Lack of external memory could become an issue. Yes, 32Gb is pretty huge. But, so are many of the new games, with 200Mb becoming more common. Not to mention the capability of the phone to play HD content. I also rip music for mobile playing as flac or at least 320k mp3. This makes an album anything up to 800+Mb in size. The internal memory won't take much to fill. None of these are really that big a deal for me, so I'm just being picky with this one!
I've heard various mentions of the battery life being poor on the One X. Considering what this phone does, I'm reasonably happy with having comparable performance as I had with the HTC Desire. Generally, with moderate-heavy use, I'm beginning to think about charging late evening after taking it off charge when I get up in the morning. That's fine by me. I carry a Veho Pebble in my car, so can always put the mobile on charge when I'm out anyway.
I think that's it

I think you have it spot on. Luckily I have no issues with my screen and no dust collected anywhere. Using a pouch to keep it nice and safe and it survived a small drop. I don't understand the decision not to make lens from gorilla glass unless its something to do with picture quality. Ordered a flip case as a good work around. I am just debating if I should sell desire or keep as a backup phone

Search for HTC One X Antenna Reception Test at Youtube. I have tried it myself and indeed the signal did dropped. Does that count as design flaw?

Seriously? A 10% dBm drop is, in your mind, a "design flaw?" If you're looking for something to be concerned about the YouTube poster's best performance at 89 dBm is pretty atrocious. Two floors away from my router I get better results on my SGS2. The weaker the signal the more any device will be impacted by obstructions (like bone). You'll see drops and gains like that simply by changing the phone's orientation to the router. As devices get thinner with more and more stuffed in to them antenna placement gets more complicated to avoid interference. That video doesn't concern me a bit (unless 89 dBm is typical Wi-Fi performance).
Had mine for 8 days now, it has no rattle that i've noticed, the screen glitches occasinally in browser, it sense restarts fairly often, battery life imo is decent my stats are typical of others. I had a single occasion where died/crashed, no power button or at least not the usual one press so held it and a small dialogue came up after a while saying 'hold for 2 more seconds to restart' which i did and the fone restarted fine, oh and i've had a single overheat whilst streaming a movie.
I had an early release hero which had some serious bugs which improved dramatically and an early desire s which i found pretty much ironed out from the start.
I'm very happy with my one x overall as any issues it has are teething problems which can be sorted.

What a boring Sunday, I'ma make a long post to kill time.

I'm gonna talk about my one week+ old HOX, and like always, I have a lot to say.
To start with, my last phone was the Omnia II, and it was a piece of ****. I had no idea someone was capable of producing something so stupid I'm just totally shocked I mostly used it as a regular phone+music player. It sucked mainly because of the WM6.5 OS, its just funny how someone could even sell such a thing and call it a smartphone. Firstly the performance sucks and it's obvious, nothing goes beyond 10fps in WM6.5, you'd be lucky to get over 5. The music player playlist scrolls at about 3fps, the keyboard has a half second to one second lag, the browser runs at about 0.8fps, it is a full featured browser but you can barely browse the most plain mobile sites. With performance like this, multitasking can kiss my ass, how about get any single task done right before you can multitask? That resistive touchscreen also sucked, I was stupid I didn't do enough research to know the difference. Why would you have a phone screen that is NOT covered with glass? Why? Ignoring the obvious hardness differences, it sucks when those reflections on my screen are distorted, I wanna see a perfect mirror reflection, I'm a perfectionist ok? And of course there are about three apps for WM. I know there are more but they look like windows 95 and has tiny ui elements designed for styluses so they don't count. And those ones that look like windows XP or with lame 3d themes, SPB shell or some ****, those don't count as well.
Look at iPhone! That's how it should be done, everything must be perfectly smooth period. If its not smooth it's not even worth mentioning I don't care how many features you have. iPhone 4 really kicked android in the ass with that retina display. I still don't get it, even today people are releasing phones with this "qHD" resolution, wtf? That's just laughable it's lower than a phone released two years ago! With a much smaller screen! Really? Who's gonna accept that? Sometimes they even call it their "flagship" product, gimme a break. 720p is the minimum period.
So just a few weeks ago I was struggling to decide between the iPhone 4s, HOX the S3, and Sony's yet to be released waterproof 1.5ghz dual core phone. I can't wait for the Sony because iPhone 5 is coming out by the time they release it so that's out of the question. I already have the iPad so I decided to try out an android phone, already got a taste of iOS. I picked the HOX and here is why.
The Galaxy S III isn't as good looking as the HOX to begein with. Maybe Samsung has been having too many problems with patents their design is severely compromised it looks like a really cheap phone but obviously with latest technologies like that screen and its thickness. That bottom part looks really bad it reminds me of a really ugly version of the Omnia II, it looks so 2006 if you unrest and what I mean. That top part also look really bad with those obvious holes for sensors and cameras, they should be hidden like on the HOX. The back side and the rim also look like a very cheep phone but thinner and bigger.
The galaxy s3 screen is also bigger I think, but with the same resolution which makes its bigger size a negative fetus because it's harder to use. Oh wait, in fact it's of a lower resolution because of that pentile ****, it only has 2/3 the number of sub pixels as the HOX. The amoled display is vibrant but that's not equivalent to good because it's too vibrant and the colors are inaccurate. Take a look at a professional display review of the s3 all three primaries are way off they are over saturated. White balance is non existent it's too blue and sometimes green it hurts my eyes. The amoled display is also far dimmer than the HOX, doesn't bother me much but it's also a down point.
The S3 is slightly faster and has a bigger battery. But the Sense UI also look better and no I'm not a fan of flashing ROMs anymore. Honestly I don't give a **** about performance as long as it's smooth I'm happy, and I don't play 3d games at all. I saw this review concluding the s3 has a mich much battery life, I don't know what to say about their stupidity, it must have been tough finding someone to do that video review with a straight face. They test battery life by playing a video that's basically a static image, on max screen brightness. Ok to start with, the HOX has a much brighter screen, in fact, 60% brighter if I remember correctly. So the HOX shouldn't be competing on max brightness. It should be on 60%. Secondly that S3 has a freakin amoled display how can you compare that with an LCD? That stupid video they use is mostly dark blue with a small rainbow so the total display output of an oled display displaying that image is probably less than 33%. So, we should have the HOX's screen brightness decreased by another 66% down to 20% max brightness to be fair. Or, we should have a video with realistic scenarios like full white google home pages. But of course, the s3 with a bigger battery and it's more advanced processor is probably better on battery life in any case, just not by THAT much.
But that battery life advantage doesn't nearly compare with the HOX's much better looking unibody and its solid feel. HOX's better camera quality and speed. HOX's studio quality display, I just wish that display is 10-bit, cuz sometimes you see banding. Beats Audio is mostly advertising but it's not a bad addition.
However, using the HOX for a week, I found a couple of problems with android phones. For example, they're never ashamed of releasing unfinished products are they? How come LWP pauses when I swipe between home screens? Wtf is that all about? Releasing a feature that's partly or completely useless? It's not too bothering on non-parallax and slow LWPs, but that's not the best part of having a LWP is it? That's a big one but there are also some small ones like the photo stack widget, it resets to the first picture all the time. I can't uninstall useless ****s like google+, showme, latitude, local, locations, navigation, car.... I mean do we not have enough navigation apps already? I don't even think you can uninstall the setup wizard. In iOS you can't uninstall newsstand or reminder but at least you can hide them in a folder and their icons look really good, much better than "show me" at least. The system also doesn't come with a file manager, I wonder how youre supposed to empty your download folder, do you just let it eat up all your storage? And oh, the three dots of death, not too bothering, but it just leaves you thinking if HTC even test their phone, might as well just not have any of the touch buttons so I can feel lest wasteful?
and honestly, I don't like android's multitask system, because you don't know what's running and what's not running. In iOS you always know nothing is running, you don't worry about battery life. But in android they could all be running for all I know, but sometimes I also want an app to run in the background. There should be a better way to manage that. Like having a multitask bar like iOS, have most apps go on save state, but you can allow certain apps to run a background process which could be independently managed from save state. So I don't have to either kill an app or let it eat my battery.
Overall, I'm still really satisfied with the device. It's generally as smooth as the iPhone, browser performance is on par with the iPad2 which is good enough. Audio performance is also good with my Etymotic Research MC-5. And the screen is just a treat sometimes I press the power button just to see the beautiful screen showing my wallpaper. And the unibody, it feels much better than the S3 glossy plastic.
thx for this objective review
all ur info r 100% spot on
enjoy the hox, upcoming update that we have it leaked will solve the 3dot menu and 90% if the bugs also boost performance by a good margin (real performance not benchs)
yea too bad HTC made a very big mistake
they worked so hard for such a great device and total reboot for them but then shot themselves in the foot by rushing it out as they were worried about the s3 but it really had the opposite effect many of the early new comer adopters jumped ship (1.26 was a disaster)
speaking of the s3 my employer shares all ur points and he is dying to switch it with the hox
starting from ICS you can disable system apps (not all but most of them, maps and google+ for sure for example, and they bother you... like they bother me, lol)
just dont update them and from application's settings tap "disable" and they'll disappear from launcher (i guess it just "chmod -r" the apk), you dont have to be rooted for that
i've picked mine yesterday, used and bought 06-29 but the owner wanted to try the S3 and payed it a good price... it's awesome, no wifi issues of yellowish screen.
so far i'm really entusiastic...

Great write up. And your bottom line conclusion's spot on. No phone is perfect. You compare the good against the bad against what's important to you and decide from there. No one's "wrong" in picking any of the phones you mentioned if it's "right" for them. After using the phone for a couple of months now there are some things that I'd like to see done differently and make me wonder what HTC was thinking. Then there's things that are so well done and seem so intuitive that they just make me smile. I just played a two hour and forty minute movie using HTC Watch via Media Link and not only did it work flawlessly in 720p, it only consumed 20% of my battery. The fact that a phone, any phone, can now do that is pretty amazing.
As for battery life. Exynos Quad is highly overrated; that or Teg3 is underrated. Comparing the One X to the SGS3 and adjusting for the differences in battery size, the One X actually performs better than the SGS3 in all but video playback where the darks of the content favor AMOLED. It's meaningless in real life because of the smaller fixed battery in the One X, but HTC, Nvidia, or both deserve a lot of credit for extracting that type of efficiency from a chip that's not exactly modern.
Enjoy your new phone...
But for some reason HTC decided you shouldn't be able to disable Google+ or show me, or setup wizard. While you can disable Facebook and YouTube.

[Q] I need to know all the weaknesses about this phone.

I'm considering getting the SGS3 but I need to know what some of the most common problems that people have with this phone.

There is too much good development, there is too much ram, and the screen is too awesome.
On a serious note:
It gets warm when running apps that put a workload on the CPU is the only problem that I have had, well that and the fact that it isn't very bright in the sun, but that is an AMOLED issue.
It gets warm when you run games for around 20 minutes. I never had rise in temperature doing anything else. This is the best phone I've ever owned.

Only problem I've seen is that the audio distorts if you try to record a video at a concert. Someone said Iphones dont do that...I dont know but most of my bare naked ladies concert I recorded was distorted too loud.....Why not automatic audio gain...???

yeah honestly the phone has only 3 problems as far as i can see...
1. the phone gets hot (like i've gotten over 40 degrees C ) when you push the CPU
2. IT might be because its just too awesome but my battery usually lasts me about 12 hours a day (with pretty extensive use)
3. The screen isn't too good in direct sunlight. I've tried both a matte screen protector as well as a invisible shield HD. Both had there own version of glare.
other than that i can't think of a thing...
ITS F***ING AMAZING!!!! :good:
The one major drawback is that the phone will get really hot sometimes. That's about it.

Actually amoled is far better in the sun than common LCD screens. I don't know of other screen technology that is better than amoled for outdoor use.
On topic I think size might be a little uncomfortable for some people. I happen to love the big screen though.

1) Yes your significant other will likely get jealous and call you names.
2) warm with running heavy loads, BUT nowhere near the scorching sun that was the Atrix 4g.
3) the detect eye setting to leave screen on might freak you out. How does it know? Lol.
Man this phone is amazing.

Best android phone on the market, in my opinion. Development for it is crazy awesome so highly recommend it.
I have KT747 and it's undervolted and overclocked. I played Pokemon Emerald for 2 hours while waiting in line to vote. No heating issues.

Ummmmm, well, uh...... I can't seem to come up with any things I WISH this phone didn't have. I have ZERO regrets getting this phone. The only other device I would consider would be the Note II, but that's not for any failings of the SGSIII, just more out of curiosity and a BIG screen

I read this and thought I was going crazy, but I'm not the only one with the issue:
http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/45801/which-smartphone-best-screen-in-sun
My only issue is one handed use. When using the phone with 1 hand it is very hard to reach things at the top of the screen (notification bar, search buttons, etc)
The only problem with this phone is a direct consequence of its greatest feature : the screen is too big!
I have relatively small hands/fingers, so reaching anything on either the top or bottom left corners of the screen is next to impossible without holding the phone with both hands.
It's pretty fantastic. Easy to root and flash ROMS on, runs most games, nice speakers. A little tough to use one-handed, but you learn.
It does get scary hot sometimes, when you push it.
My biggest complaint about this thing is the glass they used to make the screen, honestly. It scratches and cracks a LOT easier than my Captivate ever did. The Captivate took almost two years to get a scratch; this one has a trio of scratches in the middle of the screen from I-have-no-idea-what. Also a crack in the corner from an unlucky fall. But if you get a screen cover, you'll mostly be alright, I think.
ignore anyone who is telling you the screen cracks easily...especially with this phone there is a video of a car running over it and it not cracking, i've already dropped it numerous times on hard surfaces to no bad result, not even a scratch.
a few things with the phone
1. heat if your overclocking (why you would do that on this phone is still beyond me- i can stream everything accept for blurays like planet earth to my phone on a 720mhz underclock- without lag )
2. the volume up and down buttons are the opposite size of a lot of motorola phones and where the volume was on your old motorola has a power button...I was wondering why the hell my phone keptshutting off the first week I had it lol...takes a while to get right...especially if you are using your phones on runs/jogs
3. the screen is bigger than normal for sure...less grip. the way i would descrine it to you is that someone could slap it out of your hand on a run
4. the back side of the phone has a lower than normal build quality...it is plastic. Nothing wrong with that personally. The problem comes with friction...like I said in 3 you don't have much grip because of the size of the phone. In addition to that the lack of friction on the back of the phone...how do I describe it...it would bounce up and down in your pocket...and in your back pack. Not exactly the most secure feeling. So for instance when I go on a long distance run I have to keep it out the entire time through. A contrast to the plastic back of the phone would be my old blackberry that has a leather back. It would slip right in, but stay PUT in your pocket.
Yea this phone is extremely easy to drop. Its so smooth and will slip out of your hand. Also feels extremely delicate.
But you can solve these problems by buying a case.
My biggest two complaints would be:
1-one handed operation
2-screen visibility in sunlight

First Impressions.

Surprise no one did a first impressions thread yet lol.
In here we give our first impressions of the phone so far like your opinion on the performance, screen, sound, camera, build quality, battery life etc.
First I'll like to say that the build quality is amazing. Coming from an epic 4G, I am not sure if my words have any strength but it just feels so nice. It looks very sexy as well. I can't stop staring at it lol.
This is the best screen I have ever seen. It is so sharp and detail in a way I would have never expected. I personally liked the over saturated colors on Samsung's amoled screens but this screen made me feel as if it was too cartoony looking now.
As for performance, I feel like reviewers gave me false expectations. Don't get me wrong, this is a super fast phone but people made it seemed like there would be no lag at all but I notice occasionally hiccups. Note that this is a minor complaint because for most of the time, this is a very smooth experience. The quadcore processor makes this phone a beast!
Battery life has surpassed my expectations. The standby time is great for me. I can use this phone heavily, stop using it and barely experience a drain. Eco mode helps and it charges fast as well.
I came from an Epic 4G so even the cons of the phone is a pro for me since everything is an upgrade. I have nothing but praise for this phone.

I agree with your statements. I also do notice small occasional hiccups which are most likely software related. Hopefully LG will address this in a future update or Jelly Bean release.
Camera is pretty much the only complaint I have about the phone. It's really disappointing. Another software issue that I hope LG will fix in the future.
I just played with one 10 minutes ago at the Sprint store and walked away thoroughly impressed. Loved the sleekness and the feel of the phone. Screen was amazing and the camera was awesome. The speed of the phone was blazing fast. Loved the phone. Looking forward to possibly owning one in the near future.

I am seeing small bugs here and there as well. Like the home screen animations "skips" sometimes when swiping through the screens.
Or the Music player list scrolling is pretty smooth and as soon as you play a song, it becomes choppy. What's up LG? A quad-core CPU can't handle playing music and scrolling through a list?
The Korean version is expected to get Jelly Bean next month so hopefully LG and Sprint and get their stuff together and give us the update quick.
I'm coming from the SGSII (ET4G). Off the back, the build quality of this phone is amazing. The phone is beautiful and it feels great in hands. Not that I ever really had any complaints about samsung but wow, now i REALLY feel the difference. Because of sleekness though I am alot more paranoid about dropping this phone. Going to order a case today for it. The display is also great. Although its taking some time to get used to (as far as colors). Performance wise, the phone is much faster than my rooted sgs2. I have noticed a hiccup here and there but its not enough to complain about. After getting official ICS on the SGS2, there were days I just wanted to throw that phone because all the ICS builds were so buggy and battery life was horrendous. So comparing to that, ICS on the LG is great and battery is far better than what I had so it's good for me. Camera wise, I am still playing with it. The photos are okay but not great. Although, has anyone tried the video camera? As far as video is concerned I am very pleased with what I am seeing. All this phone needs is some Jelly.
I'm getting a terrible batter life on mine...down to about 5% by the end of the day. I looked in the battery info and it says Android OS is at 66% for battery use. Anyone have any idea why?

Android usage is also top battery drainer for me but supposedly this display is supposed to be pretty low power? The display on my 3D absolutely destroyed battery but I'm getting a lot longer out of this phone.
My opinions pretty much reflect everyone else's. This phone is simply amazing in every way. Huge props to LG on this thing. Sleek and professional design with superb build quality, matched with a high quality screen and a fairly loud speaker. Performance is always snappy, there are very minor stutters every once in a while but such is android. 95 percent of the time it is extremely fluid though. And I actually like LG's UI and the ease of quick memo, much better than Sense.
One thing I'd like to add that I don't think I've heard anyone say yet is that the audio quality is simply amazing. Sounds SO much clearer and natural compared to my Evo (using headphones obviously).
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda premium
I got mine Thursday on my lunch break. That particular one had a problem where I could hear myself in the phone. Not an echo like you get from time to time, but almost like it was going physically through the case of the phone. 24 hours later took it back and exchanged it. The one in the store DID NOT do this and neither does the exchanged one.
Coming from a S2 Epic 4g Touch, which feel off my kitchen table and busted the screen and having to go back to my Evo, this thing flies. I absolutly love the speed. I have not fully tested out what I need it to do, but so far, I have no complaints on the performance.
The things I do dislike. No swappable battery, but this seems to be going the way of the dodo bird anyway. Hopefully the battery consumption is, as great, as they say it is. I was also dissapointed in no SD card and the ringer is crazy quiet, especially when you lay it down with the speaker down. I have never had a phone be this quiet before and the speaker was on the back as well.
Great upgrade but...
I had the HTC EVO 3D last which eventually died on me. Two strips on the phone became unresponsive (had to use predictive texting all the time m ><) and the back camera failed so every time I switched the camera it would just flip the image.

You're in Atlanta, too? I've noticed, at least in my area, the only places I get 4G is when I'm in my car, on the road. Have only had the phone for a week, though, with not much traveling (just to and from work, and some shops in Edgewood and Ponce area).
My overall impression with this phone, coming from an EVO 4G, is that this thing is simply beautiful. The phone I originally purchased had color-banding issues as well as a slight backlight bleed on the top of the display (viewing a photo in fullscreen from the gallery app, without zooming, shows this bleed, I've noticed), so I took it back for a replacement. The replacement had an even worse backlight bleed in the same place. With some complaining and nagging at the store, I managed to get a second replacement which still has the backlight bleed and color-banding issue. I have since discovered that this is a manufacturing defect that exists on all Optimus G's, which is unfortunate, but I'm learning to live with it. The backlight bleed is easy to ignore, but the color-banding is very noticeable. A simple swipe down of the notifications panel will show the quick settings bar, which has a striped/banned effect on the gradient. Comparing this device's screen to others (SGSIII and iPhone 5) shows that this display is unique in this regard. Such a shame, considering all the great things about this phone.
Also, while the camera isn't flawless, it certainly isn't always trounced by Camera Zoom FX - For example, the other day I was in the coffee shop and took some sample shots with the stock camera that were too dark. Switching to Camera Zoom FX produced an over-exposed picture that wouldn't change exposure, despite metering in different areas of the viewfinder. This left me very confused. Hopefully the stock camera will be fixed (more or less) in the Jellybean Update due this December. I won't root until I get it. Haha
This phone is sex. The camera, although not always top notch, turns out good, detailed photos with very natural tones. I adore this display. I like Samsung's super amoled, so I didn't quite know what to expect, yet this display has stunned me with a warm variety of natural colors.
I personally love the stock keyboard. I had bought swiftkey on my Nexus S and assumed I would need it for this phone as well, but I have been impressed with the stock keyboard to a tremendous extent.
Now, a complaint I do have is regarding the temperature of this processing beast. It tends to run hot. Which sometimes prevents me from putting the screen at 100% brightness. I was a bit shocked, but it seems a small price to pay for a quad core processor and a huge screen.
This is a very nice phone. Love it.

this phone is pretty g
so i have been waiting to get an upgrade since march... i was on a blackberry 8530 and it was falling apart. through the months i managed to bypass the evo lte for the gsIII, then to be later completely let down by that device. i guess it came down to value, i couldnt see myself spending 200 bucks for either of these phones so i continued to wait. come october i hear the specs for the OG and it seemed like it was going to be the phone that the gsIII should have been. quad core, 13 mp shooter, and 2 gb ram... epic. I knew the phone was going to come out for 200, compared to the evo lte for about 100 and the sg3III for about 150 regular price. Expecting for there to be deals on these phones, I was still debating on making the purchase for 200 and not too just wait for a price drop. When I saw the preorder price of 150 I got pretty damn excited. heres a phone that just came out for the same price as the sgIII, with better specs. Well I ended up having to wait a little longer for a discover card that I had just been approved for. Come last week I see the best buy price... $100, no freaking way. I got my card walked in the best buy with confidence at made my purchase, actually got one for my dad too. So yeah anyways after one week I have come to some of the same conclusions as the rest of you guys.
Build quality/screen: The phone looks and feels fantastic. This screen is great, I put a couple hd .mkv's and they run so smooth and look so good. I can even play them as a text!
The OS: ICS seems to run with few hiccups, and LG's skin is pleasing. But yeah everything is so smooth and accessible. Apps load so quick. I dont know how much of this is just because its my first android phone or the phone itself. I notice some of you all noticed the stutter when swiping through the home screen menus. I got this alot, especially when exiting apps or switching to landscape mode. I think I found a semi-solution by switching the scroll effect to carousel. It seems much more smooth to play with. I have also noticed the lag when scrolling through longer menus, like in the music app while scrolling through songs. I have a hard time believing this is not a software issue, the cpu and ram on this phone should run those things like butter. Also i think this is a glitch ive experienced like 3 times. I'll be sending a text, usually a long one, and suddenly the delete key gets stuck or something. I cant do anything except sit there and watch my message get deleted. Its super frustrating. It seems to stick even after, backspacing any new character I type. I think I have to exit out and return to the message for it to actually stop.
The battery: I dont know if I'm satisfied. I haven't tried it standby with music for very long, but it seems to drop pretty quick on with normal use. Ive been playing around with leaving wifi off, or on with the data, and either way it still seems pretty draining. Im not even at full brightness. Im really worried how long this thing will last watching movies or playing games. Android is at 44% right now. Also its a shame it isn't removable.
Temp: The phone can get pretty hot also. There is actually a spot, on or right under the logo on the back that actually can get intolerable at times. Maybe it only happens when using the phone while charging, but it was still surprising. The rest of the phone stays pretty cool
The camera: From what I've taken, I'm pretty happy. I like the "cheese shutter" feature for taking self portraits with the main camera. It is weak in low light, but isnt every phone camers? One issue that exists is the flash and the actual taking of the photo seem out of sync. I can't tell if its just me, but I get fulled when the actual photo is snapped, especially when the screen shows a photo right before the flash. I'm sure this could be solved with future updates.
The RAM: Yeah there are two gigs, but I seem to always have around one being used. Even with all tasks stopped, I can't get it under ~960mb in use. It was actually around 1.07gb until I did a restart. I dont know if this is all being sucked up by ICS, but should I be worried?
Storage: Im really upset over the absence of microsd slot, but I knew about that before I made my purchase. I mean 32gb built in is quite a bit more than what comes standard in other phones. I have no idea how people survive with an 8gb iphone, to me with some high quality music and bigger apps, that memory will vanish. I have noticed, though, on the stock file manager, the main directory is "/mnt/sdcard". This is pretty suspicious. I'm wondering if there actually is a card slot, but we just can't access it? Has anyone opened her up to see?
Overall: I love it, and at $100 I can't complain. I am looking forward to the Jelly Bean update or to possibly rooting the device to run a custom rom. Either way great phone!
PS. This is my first post. I wouldnt have registered if I didnt have so much to say.

I managed to get a second replacement which still has the backlight bleed and color-banding issue.

Hate it when people say what I'm about to say, but I'm saying it - I have none of these problems. There is no gradient on my quick settings bar. It's solid gray with no banding anywhere. With photos, I've got several with totally black or dark edges around the entire frame and I see no light bleed. My wife has the same phone and doesn't have these issues, either. Not trying to diminish your problem because it's obviously a problem. Only reason I'm saying it is that I haven't read anywhere that these are manufacturing defects.
@mosesjohn, That was a nice post, enjoyed reading through it. About the ram thing, I experience the same thing and I find it quite odd. When I had my Epic 4G using Jellybean, over half of my 512GB of ram was being use so to find that this phone is using half 2GB shocked me. I assumed that android just reserves a certain percentage of ram kinda like all OS reserves memory in a HDD/SSD. Either that of LG's UI is taking up a lot of resources.

Try contact sync from play store. You can use contacts fb pic as contact pic.. If I'm not mistaken ever since 4.0 Facebook stopped allowing to sync FB contacts to mobile contacts

You can merge/join contacts if you log into LG Social+. I'm able to get FB photos for contacts (as well as their social statuses). Though, I wish the auto-suggest worked better. Took me a while to get all my contacts linked right.

thanks!
about the ram... it helps knowing im not alone. it might just be that ICS likes to utilize whatever it can, without taking up more than half of the ram. I mean its going to be really hard to use 1 gb of ram with apps/games, and if ICS runs smoother because it uses the rest, fine by me. I just hope its as efficient as possible, without sacrificing performance.
