Damn you XDA! - HTC One X

I love xda, I spend a large portion of my time browsing the forums, mainly this section and the galaxy s2 section. But I both loathe and love xda for making me customise and mod my HOX and SG2, spending countless hours each week trying new kernels, mods, widgets, Roms etc...
If I didn't know about xda I'm sure I'd just change the wallpapers on my phones and the rest would stay stock - which wouldn't be a bad thing. I'd probably have a clear head to focus on other things.
I've customised my HOX now exactly how I like it now, but the fact that there is so much option and information on xda, I can't stay exactly how I like for long because I will constantly changing things around - for the better or sometimes worse, resulting in disaster for a hour or so while I reinstall everything or do nandroid recovery.
Thanks xda, and contributors for giving me the tools and information to waste a day modding and customising my phone - only to realise that I liked things how they were before
How do you guys feel? Love/hate xda for the options it gives you?

I know exactly what you mean.......
........i love xda for exactly that reason, spent ages messing around with my old htc desire and i dont think i had any particular rom for more than a week! I think the information provided by devs and other members is fantastic and have learnt alot through self teaching by reading and trying different things and of course saving the phone on numerous occasions after thoroughly buggering it up lol!!!!

I think I'd be lost without XDA. Devs are great, members are great and it's taught me a lot. Coming from devices in the past I've always loved to flash custom roms even on my Blackberry days. Devs make it easy for us and the commitment and hard work put in for us members is something that needs to be appreciated.
Thank you to all of you at XDA I'm an XDA addict and I suffer from ORD.

I was such a noob i couldnt tell you what rom i ended up flashing or what method i used to root lol...
all i remember is using a program that ran on my computer to unlock it.
heck even the first time i rooted my evo i noobed it up. but now im more into it than before. You will become a flash-aholic
And there are so many great roms, themes and mods out now...you can flash all day for a week and still not see everything.

You don't just "take a rom off". If you wipe the rom, your phone wont boot to anything. But you can easily just flash another rom, or restore your previous backup.
GOOD site for most roms on one page!!
http://evo4g.roms-db.com/all-builds/
Ran across the above site in research, used a rom off of it pretty cool plus anything tie into XDA im for it!! Thanks
Flash-a-holics (not to be mistaken with streakers lol) is a known issue affecting men and women here in XDA. This is an incurable addiction. Common symptoms include:
Anxiety (don't believe me? Try flashing a radio update lol)
Stress (not knowing what to do when your phone boots and is stuck at the HTC EVO 4G screen lol)
Nagging from the wife (cuz you spend more time tweaking your phone instead of helping around taking care of the baby)
In EXTREME cases, hypothetically speaking, if your house was on fire and you had a chance to retrieve one of the following items:
1) wedding album
2) expensive art piece
...you would write in:
3) my precious Evo lol

He wasn't trying to be a jerk. The best thing you can do is research read and search some more, and do it all over again. There are plenty of ppl here that will help. First off it is really hard to mess up your phone to the point of not being able to fix it. Most important now that you are rooted is to make a nandroid backup it will save you phone. Good luck and happy flashing

Should I wait for TMobile?

I'm thinking the official version of ICS from Tmo is going to be ICS with extra filling (bloatware) that I couldn't give a crap about...and take forever. Am I right?
I really don't want to go back to rooting (first experience was a Behold II), but I'm willing to if I can do it more easily now, and find a ROM that is nearly stock, sans bloatware.
Oh, and give me the stock Android Calendar, that's all.
Shoot. Rereading this, I think root is a must. Can someone give me a quick and easy 1-2-3 and the most STABLE (closest to stock Android) ICS ROM to date? I just want a daily use phone without all the crap software, but also no force closes, etc.
Uh oh.....
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Don't think we have any roms that are stock android. Most if not all of them have some sort of touchwiz due to it being a samsung.
What you probably want is to get a Galaxy Nexus and sell your T989.

A quick search or a glance at our development section will show you that ICS is not available for our beloved T989 yet.
So, I'm just now learning that the ICS that was released recently is for the international version, which, apparently, doesn't have anything to do with the Tmobile S2. Is this correct?

Rooting now is extremely easy. Follow the directions in the sticky and you can be rooted in less than 5 minutes.
Most if not all of the ROMS in the Dev section are debloated though still providing some of the useful features of touchwiz.
From what I've read, the ICS update for the international SGS2 doesn't have the look and feel of the traditional ICS. The features are there, but the UI looks more akin to what we've got now.

Seriously. I knew this before I even got the phone. We'll get ICS roms probably when T-mobile decides to release official ICS.
God, I am so sorry I jumped the gun and assumed that when ICS came out for the S2 that someone here would have made a ROM for Tmobile already. What the hell could I have been thinking?
For all those offended (and afflicted) by my mistake, I beg and pray for forgiveness. I hope we can find a peaceful settlement, out of court, to compensate you for having been so egregiously assaulted by the words I so carelessly, so casually slung; the bandwidth I wasted.

The problem with this statement is that you've attempted to prove a "not"...which has never been done. This has been a 2000 year old argument that keeps religion alive-people can't prove that there's NOT a god.
So, prove to me, show me exactly where you did NOT find ICS...and then prove the next place I look will not have it as well. Because after hearing all the arguments, now I think ICS is out there...somewhere. My search will continue! I will become stronger in my faith! I will continue to search, as long as it takes!
Dear god, even some users of XDA cannot forgive me, I beg of you, please forgive me for not searching eternally for Ice Cream Sandwich.
...and to the rest of you here, those who didn't react like I kicked your dog, thank you for your non reaction.

Ok my wife is Done with her GN

Her phone will not stay connected on a call for more than 5 minutes at a time. It constantly goes into Airplane mode, and she randomly has data drops.
I've put her on AOKP 4, Liquid smooth & Android Rev HD 3.0, with Stock & Franco #2 milestone. NOTHING WORKS.
It sucks because I have no problems with mine, other than a bit of lag here and there (which may have been fixed with the Trinity Kernel).
So shes done. Already up and purchased an HTC one S. I really want her to stay in the GN but I think its just left a bad taste in her mouth.
I'm just really trying to figure out what the heck is wrong with her phone.
I haven't tried the newest 4.0.4 that was released a few days ago, but I honestly doubt its gonna do anything. Suggestions???
Stock anybody? All the way stock with ugla4 or uglc1 radio? Trying to force roms perpetually in progress is a bad idea and your desire to force customization on her left her with a bad phone.
teach a man to fish, you feed him for life. teach a man to fastboot, and you create competency. and less threads on xda.
It's probably defective, especially if you've tried the plethora of software options that people are likely to suggest. Careful buying things out of frustration, though, especially things that are brand new to the market. The One S is not immune to QC defects and such. For instace:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/ht...phones-one-day-does-htc-have-qc-problems.html
Get her GNex replaced. Or let her just go with the One S, I'm sure it's a solid phone. There are tradeoffs that she may or may not care about when one decides to use a non-Nexus phone. Just make sure she knows.
Why would you buy your wife a Galaxy Nexus and unlock it? I'm going to assume she's not Android savy or knows what you're doing, but seriously a bad idea just asking for trouble.
Just saying.
Also, that's a hard issue.
Let her keep the One S and keep it Stock. Its a good UX and won't break on her. Personally, I wouldn't recommend a Nexus phone to someone such as your wife.

He may have unlocked it just to try some different solutions to fix or alleviate the problems they were having.
But yeah, I think the more appropriate thing to have done is just take it back and get a new one. You paid for a working phone, don't ever hesitate to keep taking it back until you get one that works as it should!
I have heard that several people with that problem have had their GN replaced and fixed the problem. When I got mine, the verizon rep specifically told
me that if I had that problem to bring it back to get replaced. I think they had a bad batch of phones....

my hox is branded vadafone, my fear is that tomorrow will not release updates, so I have to change cid, and without s-off you can not.
jb official update is already out for a while but Vodafone still has not released anything.
if we do not change cid I see it hard for branded devices.
My phones CID is Optus001 which means I'll be on ICS for a while longer, ICS does not stop my phone doing what I want it to do. Relax a bit, it will come.

I believe an experienced developer needs to have a deep-look into S-off and then we might have some hope. But for now, we have to take use to this.
can i say something regarding XDA in general??? I am freaking pissed off with people now days not freaking going by the rules no more...
OP..Have you actually tried to bother to search firstly before opening this thread? No you have not.. Cause if you did you would know what is happening regarding s-off...So as regarding that we do not have it..Big deal..Learn on how to flash a custom rom without s-off. Also regarding JB..There are so many threads which discusses the whole situation regarding CIDS and so on..
So again why was there a need to open this thread. None at all..Just another pointless wasted thread and space and it is really starting to piss me off..
And to others here as well...You moan about this being another thread but you lot are just as bad as well by carrying on debating about stuff in this actual thread..Report the damn thing and move on...
I really miss the days back in the S2 forums were if there was a useless thread opened it was shut within an instant of it getting opened..Nowadays here at this forum you get nothing but bundles of useless threads and the attitude of a few members on this community has started to suck big style cause they freaking do not know the meaning of respect and they also do not know the meaning of freaking searching for something instead they expect to be spoonfed on how to freaking do **** on there smartphones...i really hope someone bricks there **** due to the stupidity of not doing the proper research...
XDA has changed. More mainstream. It's normal looking at how communities grow, develop and change.
I viewed XDA as a non member for 2 years before joining after getting an Android phone. Things have changed aplenty.

Being made fun of is better than having a "brick"! When I got mine I didn't want to take time to study up (coming from HTC) so I did the same....

Thanks. Those one click programs usually scare me more than the step by step methods.
I'm not worried about which is easier, just if there is a preffered method. I believe I have found my answer after reading FAQ again and watching the videos linked from it.
Thanks again.

Qbking has a bunch of videos. Very easy and I've done it a bunch of times. Just familiarize yourself with Odin and you will be fine.

I know I'm late to the party, but here's my two cents:
As far as I'm aware, all of the various guides (and toolkits) actually use the same method (although, the toolkit does have a tendency to bork the wifi). It's just really the packaging they come in. Whenever I recommend a guide to people, I always link this guide by Skunk Ape. It's intuitive and explains each step quite well, with pictures and clear instructions. I've never had someone come back to me asking for clarification after reading that guide.
Hope you enjoy your rooted phone!
Gotta say.....so far these s3 forums seem really friendly. Thanks for all the advice guys.....really digging this phone and forum so far
If this was the evo 4g forum and I started a thread like this some dude with 20 posts would have already flamed me and called me a noob......hahaha

Welcome to the Sprint forums! We're generally nice people. The only time you really see the ugly side is if you flash an international Rom to your phone (which bricks it, btw). That's when the sarcasm comes out.
Just stick to Roms made for our phones (d2spr, not i9300) and you'll be fine!
So after researching roms and reading/.watching reviews, it seems that blazer is closest to stock minus all the bloat/samsung stuff that is loaded by default. Is this correct, or would u guys recommend a different rom for a STOCK experience +tweaks/-bloat.
I swear if I bought an htc phone I wouldn't be quite as clueless.

Everyone on here would probably recommend a different rom. I'm currently running msg&chubbz rom. It's pretty stock, does have a lot of features from gs4. Does have "minit settings" which allow you to change battery icon/color, clock color/location, and some others, but besides these changes its pretty stock. I was clueless to s-offing my brothers evo lte, but I got it eventually. HTC phones are a little more confusing to most people.

I recommend trying the ones you like, all at least a weeks time then deciding for yourself. But since you asked TPR 'cough' 'cough'.....

Haha, I'm an AOSP guy myself, but yes, The People's Rom has quite a vibrant (and vocal!) community, most of which are kind and like to help others out.

For a truly stock ROM you can check out freezas thread. He has all the latest Sprint updates and so forth. You can't get any closer to stock than that. I also recommend TPR. They are really great over there.

Tpr and morphology is fantastic.
If want to see the ugly side the sgs3 forum, flash an international rom and ask why your phone is bricked.

What? No one brought up M.O.A.R? my fav. TW and I can customize all day long.
Seems you're already rooted, but I have to give a shout-out for topherk pushing skunk ape's rooting guide. The guide is so well-written and gave me just what I needed (custom recovery and root). For someone new to rooting, it was the best IMO...
