Is there a way to edit the navigation buttons (back, home and background apps), so that when you press and hold it it does something else? Similarly to AOKP and other custom roms, but within stock?

anyone know how to change home button to maybe press hides bar long press unhides. That would be great. Much more useful as a full screen button I think.
Is there a way to get the system to not add the menu button to various google programs? I'm running AOKP and I've got the menu button added to the navbar. Consequently, I want to get rid of it in the apps. Also, I would like the menu to pop up at the bottom and not the top. I would think this would be highly desired. What am I missing?
the menu inside the applications is built into the app itself. you wont be able to remove it unless you decompile the APK's and remove the menu yourself
I thought that the program used a signal from the system to determine if it has a menu button and uses that to determine the need for it. Does the Galaxy S III still get this button in apps like the play store and gmail? I don't know, but I would think not.
So from my research, it seems that the "overflow menu", as it is now called, only appears in the "action bar" when there is no menu button present on the device. For legacy devices that run ICS, it seems that android will detect that a menu button is present and not show the "overflow menu".
So basically, I'm wondering how I can trick the Galaxy Nexus into thinking there is a menu button present. This really should be an option for current roms as lots of people add the menu button to the navbar.
You have to hide the navbar to get what you want. When I use LMT and disable the navbar, the action button in all apps no longer appears. There is some api that tells the action bar menu to appear or not just like you want.

Click to collapse
What is LMT?
From my searchings, that seems to be what I've found. there is a methods called "hasPermanentMenuKey()" to return true this requires that there not be a navbar. Unfortunately, this kinda kills things as the whole point of hiding it was because I had a menu key in my navbar.
Thanks so much for the helpful reply!!!
Is it possible to map the menu key (long press) to show all recent apps without installing a custom rom? I am willing to root to get this function but I really don't want to deal with custom roms. Is there maybe an app or something I can flash that can do this? I'm currently stock unrooted with Nova launcher, which only allows me to map the menu key (long press) to recent apps if I'm at the home screen.
I haven't been able to do what you're asking, but have had success enabling the onscreen soft keys. This requires root:

Some things are a little wonky with soft keys: the top entry of the call log is cut off and fast forwarding video with the default player while in landscape mode doesn't work. Small price to pay IMO for easy access to the multitasking menu.
Specifically, I want to change the recent apps key back to recent apps, instead of menu. I prefer the original layout over the Samsung/Legacy style pretty much every dev uses. It's too awkward for my liking, the recent apps button is being wasted as a rarely used menu key, and long pressing home for a feature I use more than pressing home is cumbersome. I don't really mind if I can't remap menu anywhere, as that'll be covered by the hidden PIE menu anyway.
And no, the solution for me isn't to switch to CM10. I have no plans to stop using Paranoid Android anytime soon.
Thanks for your help.
If you want to stick to PA I'm not sure how you can do that. But if you don't mind changing to ICJ, you can remap the capacitive keys. And you won't lose pie either as pie navigation is also included in ICJ.
Hi,
is there any way to config nav bar settings with LOS16 and BQ Auqaris X Pro?
I need menu button and want to use this with double click or long press for Home button?
any solution for this?
thanks for any hints and tips
got a tip otherwise: Button Mapper
https://labs.xda-developers.com/store/app/flar2.homebutton
Am I right that this allows the mapping of the physical buttons but not that the nav bar is visible again? I didn't find a way to make it visible after switching to LOS.
I using free version of button mapper only and only for emulating the missing HOME button
this works
I do not know an option for making nav bar visible again
