I have purchased a One X.
It's unbranded and not simlocked.
Would I need to Unlock my bootloader or Root my device?
What is the differnce?
What do they do?
Do I need to perform one of them, in order to install apps that do not come from google play?
I'm not interested in flashing another ROM at this moment.

You do not need to root your device or unlock the boot loader to install apps which aren't from the market.
Go to settings -> security
And the tick unknown sources.
Then find your .apk and install it

if all you want to do is install 3rd party apps go to settings - security - unknown sources and tick it
EDIT: adamgaltress beat me to it
thanx guys.
Still interested in what the bootloader unlocker and root do!!

They unlock the phone to allow you to flash custom ROMs. If you don't wanna do that then don't worry about it

You'd need an exploit in ICS 4.0.3 itself to do that and we don't currently have one.

you cant do root here easy way because HTC doesnt wont us to do so. ... thats all and simple as that. with another brands like samsung is the process short and easy. blaim HTC ...
android is open source... ICS 4.0.3 its not the problem at all!
If you really want root follow the tutorial at htcdev.com to unlock your bootloader and then follow one of the tutorials on how to install a custom rom (those are basically always rooted)... I'd wait for an S-OFF though.
Some pretty useful guides in Development section...
I found them fairly straight forward with no hi-cups along the way.
Always prefer a challenge over a click of a button
Well for me I would like to root, but I dont want to loose warranty. Altough I want to get rid of soe annoying apps HTC brought with the phone like flickr and 7digital.
You will get back your warrenty if you un-root your phone.

Not sure what you're on but you can't root a Samsung phone from inside Android without using an exploit which is exactly the same as HTC and what the OP was asking for. You need to restart the Samsung and put it into the bootloader same as on a HTC.

Not if you use HTCdev to unlock your bootloader, they keep a log of your device, regardless if you re-lock it.
They'll still replace your device if it's a hardware problem though.

As long as you revert back to stock rom and flash stock recovery you should be fine. Don't see the need to relock as it'll just show unlocked what signs will we have that we've flashed a custom firmware? On SGS devices we had a count number but using a jig we could wipe this back to zero and return to complete stock.
Hello everyone!
I'm new here as you can see it's my first post.
I have just rooted my HTC One X today and I would like to know what the easiest way to delete the stock apps from the phone is such as the Amazon app. Since i'm new I am very unsure how to do this and yes I did search on how to do it and found a solution by using a android terminal application but I am unsure if it either works for HTC One X or if there is a easier solution to do this.
(Unrelated to the topic)
I also wonder how you guys updated your HTC One X because I haven't recieved a OTA Update? (I suppose that's what they call it) for my phone and I am still on 1.26 and my carries is "Three".
Thanks and hopefully ya'll can give me some advice since I am a big newby ^^
Only way to fully remove stock apps is to unlock the phones bootloader via HTC website (voids part of warranty) and the either install custom rom or root the stock one.
only thing you can do with standard phone is disable the apps you dont want. think this just stops it from showing in your app drawer and menus etc but its not removed.
For the update there are some threads in the one x section about each ota updates, im sure i read in one of them three are yet to release theirs.
I'm on three and had mine but I have a sim free phone.
This thread is your starting point if you want to go down the unlocking/custom rom route.

Thanks very helpful reply!
If I unlock my phone at Three as in sim card unlock to use any carrier does this mean I will get the OTA update?
Thanks i'll check out the feature of hiding the stock apps.

Not sure how it works to be honest, I'm a nooby myself.
If you unlock your bootloader you can download the ota updates from people on xda and flash them to your phone but that will require you to do a bit of reading if you never done it before.

No,
SIM Lock and the BOOTLOADER Lock are different, Three will just unlock your sim to use on other networks, HTCDev will unlock your bootloader to flash custom ROM's but VOIDS WARRANTY

Yeah I understand that, my phone is unlocked (the bootloader) and is rooted aswell. We're now talking about the OTA Update in order to get it quickly does my phone have to be unlocked as in simcard unlocked? because I heard carriers bring out these OTA updates and Three didn't release it at all.
If your phone is rooted and unlocked you can flash the ota update you want manually.
Find them in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1606676
I believe the one most have and the one most current roms are using is 1.28.401.9
you will need CMW recovery to do it if you dont already have it.
I don't think unlocking the sim lock will get the the update over the air, it will still be a three branded phone.
EDIT
actually, reading a few of the posts it that thread it seems unclear if it works, id read the whole thread before attempting it.

Apologies for bumping this thread, I came across this thread through google. I ordered an HTC One X from At&T. I usually remove stock apps completely from my android phones through the superuser command line technique. Would I be able to do this with the HTC One X as well? You seem very knowledgeable. Thanks.
If you have root just install titanium backup and you can use it to remove whatever you please,
How did you get root?

With that method you should still get ota normally,
Have you checked root? Use like root checker from the market
Then if you have get titanium backup free and remove what you like

Does anyone know how to flash clean firmware on 8s?
Is there a tutorial?
What do you mean by clean firmware?? Remove the software branding?
is there any way to "root" or something this phone? I love my htc 8s but you can't do nothing with it
What do you mean with "nothing" ? You can do way more than with standard WP7 . Most of the stuff you needed unlocked rom in wp7 is now allowed/available in wp8.
Tho some things are still "locked" yes, but theres no custom roms yet.

You can developer unlock your phone to side load apps...
Nokia Music or something that would not be available normally...

I got an HTC One X bootleg from China and the google play apk I installed does not work at all. I understand, I need to root it so I can install a modified version of google play. I've tried every way possible to root it using bin4ry, gingerbreak, doomlord and superoneclick to no avail.
All I wanted was to make google play work that's it. Is there anybody who can extend help? Thanks in advance...

Do you have your bootloader unlocked?
Do you have your Google account activated?
Are you 100% positive that your One X is genuine?
Which G Play are you trying to install? How re you trying to do that?
Please provide some additional info.

I don't know anything about bootloader. Sorry.
I do know I have a valid google account.
No, I was fully aware that my device is just a clone.
I downloaded the latest version of google play apk. I downloaded it to my sd card then installed it manually.
Hold volume down and power to get to bootloader. Take a pic of it, then select recovery, take a pic of that too.
