So, I took a device in for screen repair. Got my phone back, with a magnificent new screen. When I got home, I hooked it up to the computer via USB cable, nothing. No mount USB option in the phone, nothing showing in windows device manager. I try to enable debugging, nothing. I boot into download mode, still nothing. I think maybe I have a bad cable, so I try one, then another, still nothing. Maybe my computer's messed up. I try another, still nothing. The phone charges fine, but will not activate any USB data options, such as tethering, adb, or file transfer. All of these things worked fine before I gave it in for repair.
Does anyone have any advice on what I should do before going back to the store and accuse them of breaking my device?
Try to see if anything shows up on your usb port list in device manager in Windows. Try updating drivers from Windows Update.

Nothing showing in the USB port list, and all 4 computers have all updates. Also just noted that the charge light comes on, and immediately turns off.

Did you try another cable?

Per my opening paragraph, I have tried multiple cables and multiple computers. The same cables work fine on all computers for CDMA Workshop + Droid, and Odin + Samsung Stratosphere (Verizon's Epic 4g).
Yes you did. Sorry. Get a light and magnifying glass and see if something got into your port blocking data connection.

Yep good suggestion. If that isn't the case you should go yell at the Sprint people, they may have messed it up.

Nothing appears out of the ordinary on the contacts. I did use a can of "air" to clean out anything that might not be visible, but also to no avail.
Then they might have loosened it in the repair.

i tried both and same result
When you say you tried several usb's, do you mean several usb ports on the pc or several usb cords? Try both. The stock usb cable is garbage. I have 2 epics in my household and both stock usb cords stopped working properly fairly quickly.

I just tried the same usb on a different model phone and it connected normally. I'm not sure what the problem is now.
and just tp make sure my prioblem wasnt from the usb cord i just bought a new one and still its not working.
Make sure your not using a launcher that will hide notification bar, I just made a tip thread in general for this problem, which may or may not help you
Now it will work ever now and again ( 1out of 10 times maybe), but if you use TW launcher it will work every single time. I'm looking into why hiding the noty bar borks USB/sdcard mounting.
I had a similiar problem where it would not connect with usb debugging on. I had to go into control panel and device manager, find the connection with USB debugging on, and then hit update driver from Windows Update. Took about 30 minutes but all worked fine after that.

It may be "Other" or Samsung Android. Does your computer make the connect sound? There should be something in the USBs if it does.

So I plug my phone into my computer and it doesn't realize it's connected. It charges, but I can't access the storage from my computer. The USB debugging doesn't even come up anymore.
I've tried 2different computers and 3 different USB cables. Tried multipled ROMs and stock. Reinstalled drivers. Restarted PC. No go. It was working fine up until yesterday.
I'm probably going to get it exchanged since it's still within the return window, but does anyone have any ideas?

Yeah, I tried that also. No go. Thanks.
I'm having the same problem. It just stopped working today after I restored from a Nandroid backup. I was on the AOKP rom, then restored back to the stock rom. I'm going to try to re-install the drivers.
I got mine working. Removed and re-installed the Samsung drivers. I then restarted the phone with it attached to my PC and it recognized it after that. I also reformatted the cache storage in "Mounts & Storage" in CWM. That didn't do anything initially but could have helped, I'm not sure.
This happens to me occasionally. Pulling the battery seems to fix it for me.
Did you by chance use QPSt to backup your IMEI? If so you need to set usb settings back to MTP

Going back to MTP wasn't enough, I had to pull the battery, even after rebooting the phone. Had been prepping to backup my IMEI #, so that was obvious the root cause though.
Battery pull worked. Thanks guys

Still no dice. I followed the toolkit to the T, reinstalled the drivers a couple of times too for good measure, and my phone still never registered. This is driving me nuts! My friends phone is popping right up when she connects to the PC but not mine.
Try the assistance chat on Samsung site since you are stock they can help you better with that. It is starting to look like a hardware issue.

Try this. (use the usb cable that came with S3)
Worked for me on my Win7 32bit.
Had similar issues on XP. Different fix for XP.
same issue, although my phone connects to 32-bit version of win 7 at work and not at home 64 bit win 7.... just charges the phone, prompt NEVER comes up
I never get mine to show up on the first try. I usually have to plug it out and back in a few times for it to work. But when i got it working, it only works on the same usb port.
Another thing i did at first to get it to recognize the phone was to use the desk to app.
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
I kept toying around with this problem. My laptop has winxp. It would beep when I put the cable in, but I was always disappointed by no connection. Then my phone would tell me to try and download Kies. Did not want to do that. But I did. Connection could still not be made.
I stumbled onto a fix. Dunno if it will work for anyone else. I was juggling about 2 dozen things at the time and might have missed a critical step.
I plugged in a USB OTG cable with an 8gb flash drive. The phone recognized it! Even displayed a cute little message in the status bar that USB was connected (instead of MTP). This all lasted a whole 2.7 seconds after hours of searching for solutions.
I tried connecting it to my computer for another try, and I am proud to report that is is working flawlessly for now!!
I have had the same issue off and on. Found somewhere this past week a suggestion to pull the battery in order to cause a hard reboot. It worked. Plan on trying it whenever it happens again.
Please delete the problem has been solved by purchased a Blackberry micro-USB cable. Thank you all.
The epic is very finicky and needs a good cable like a Blackberry cable. Also make sure to use the ports in the rear of a desktop. Look in the port on the phone to make sure the connector is clean.

I would also try disabling USB debugging. One of my computers won't connect if it's on. On my other computer it doesn't seem to matter.
Try going to your dial pad and typing ##8778# and make sure your phone is connected via PDA and NOT modem. I had same problem as you and this worked for me.

I recently got a used T-Mobile S 2 and just tried to root it. The computer will not see the phone when I hook it up to the USB. I've tried the Odin method and it won't even register it's plugged in. I've installed and reinstalled kies 3 times and I've even tried just installing the drivers by themselves. Is there a way to root the phone without having to use the USB? I'm guessing the USB connector on the phone is bad even though it's charges just fine.

If it charges ur fine, is the device in DL mode? What is the procedure u are using, with this phone the only way to root it is Odin, or maybe adb but I'm not sure, and if u have kies installed on ur pc Odin won't see the phone I repeat remove kies, once ur rooted u will never use it again anyway kies interferes with Odin, make sure u have the OEM USB cord too...

Try holding just the vol+vol- buttons and plugging it in to the USB while connected to PC, that should put u in DL mode, if not it might be ur port, have u tried all other ports and different usb wires? Yeah I've tried 3 different cables and 2 different computers. I'm leaning towards the USB Jack. I took the phone apart and found corrosion on the board towards the bottom so it looks like the phone has some water damage.

Thats most likely ur culprit then, it may be just corroded enough to not hit the right pins to push data through odin, u could try to replace the USB com, u can get one for around 30bucks online and its an easy fix if u have a lil knowledge, the bad news is without it rooting is next to impossible ...
