[Q] App crashes on SleeperROM 2.0.04 - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just upgraded my Epic 4G from SleeperROM 1.1.something and EI22 modem to EL30 modem (via the diff patch for CWM). Now I'm getting a bunch of app force quits that I wasn't before, including Market and ES File Explorer.
Any suggestions on how to fix this? I'd much rather not full wipe here since making full backups in CWM is broken - it fails on the /data partition for some reason, I'm not sure why - but I will if that turns out to be necessary. Titanium Backup is saying that "Guru caught fire during calculations", whatever that means.
I'm also still getting the "system update available" messages. Odd since "About phone" seems to indicate that the ROM install was successful, based on build, kernel version, baseband version.

Newest sleeperrom is built off of el30... the newest ota is fc09 that is why you are getting the upgrade message still... with the apps if clearing data and uninstallikng and then reinstalling doesn't work you may just have to wipe and start all over again...

Ah, thanks, I hadn't realized there was a new OTA out now.
I have no method to reinstall some of the broken things. Titanium Backup won't let me reinstall either the Market or itself.

Wow, I decided to give up on fixing it from its broken state and cleared the data and reinstalled the ROM. Now it's crashing during the "add a Google account" step.
Time to clear it more thoroughly, I think. Perhaps to a fully stock state (minus the content of the SD card, anyway, since that includes backups) and then re-rooted etc. Ugh.

Yep sounds like that is the route you may need to take... also sounds like you may have a bad download... redownload the rom and try again..

Epic 4G; TW Launcher Forceclose; Applications on SD Card

My current problem is that certain applications, not all, will dissappear after reboot if I move them to the SD Card. These applications continue to work and remain after reboot if I leave them on the phone.
The sequence of events involved a twlauncher forceclose that kept me from using my phone at all. I could do nothing other than boot into Clockwork mod. This happened after my work's Exchange Server certificate expired. Previously I had problems with a forceclose that I used the wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache and fix permissions to correct. I tried wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache and fix permissions several times to try to fix this, but it did not work.
I restored to a previous point on my phone. I had several back up points on my phone: an older one and a new one.
I had done several advanced restores: data, system, boot, to try to get the correct system to work and also to get the most up to date data. At one point, after I restored the boot data from my most recent backup boot restore, all of the applications that were on my SD card dissappeared.
I reinstalled the applications, but when I rebooted the phone, certain ones dissappeared. The applications will work and remain on my phone if I keep them on the phone.
After looking at the forums it seems I could have a problem with the SD card or the file system. The phone seems to work fine otherwise. Although, after I upgraded to CWM 5 and installed ROM manager, I got an error message regarding the first time I restored to an older backup point.
Phone configuration:
SPH-D700
Firmware: 2.3.5
Kernel: 2.6.35.7.nubernel_v0.0.2
Gingerbread.EI22
Clockwork Mod 5 (I was on Clockwork Mod 4 when I did all of the above; after I restored the phone to its current state, I upgraded to clockwork mod 5)
BTW, I would also like to upgrade to Gingerbread EL30, but it appears that I cannot simply flash the new ROM to my phone without restoring to stock ROM to upgrade.
First you can simply flash an FC09 ROM (latest). It is the modem that you need odin for.
Second: back up your sd card to a computer and reformat and restore.

Thanks
I didn't see a "thank you" on the thread, so I will post.
Okay, I thought finding the fc09 ROM would be easy. However, all I have found it The People's Rom and Serncity by Random Kings. Is there a link for the stock fc09 to flash to my phone.

Do you have a tar file so I can Odin.
I did a factory wipe, backed up the sd card, formated the sd card, and then tried to install the zip from the card, but the phone freezes at the Samgsung boot screen and won't go past. I even went and bought a new cable.
I tried to flash ECO5 with Odin, and it rebooted past the Samgun screen. Then I get an error message:
system UIDs Inconsistent" UIDS on the system are inconsistent, you need to wipe your data partition or your device will unstable
After this I tried to get usb storage to connect and when I mount the usb storage, it appears on the computer as drive j, but I cannot do anything with it.
I would really like to have a functioning phone.

Root the phone if you prefer to have it that way. All your issues sounded like data corruption anyhow.
Use Odin to flash the CWM tar file without reboot option checked, battery pull after flash, boot into recovery and flash a FC09 kernel from the dev forum. Lastly you'll just need to install Superuser from the Play Store.
That, or fkash the FC09 prerooted deodexed stock ROM in the dev section.

Help with ROMs - New to Android

For the last 3 years I've had an iPhone 3Gs and just upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy S3 yesterday. I have the Bell Mobility S3, which is the SGH-I747m.
So last night I rooted the phone using Odin and the stock OS. I then installed clockworkmod and tried out Cyanogen Mod 10.
First I tried the latest nightly build and it worked fairly well until I released that GPS and network data didn't work.
So after that I tried the latest stable build and that worked for a while, but eventually it got to the point where data no longer worked. Also I wasn't getting any alerts for texts or e-mails.
So after this I went back to my stock ROM (just used Odin and did essentially what I did to root the phone).
Then I realized that I couldn't uninstall all these ridiculous apps, and am getting annoyed by some of the features.
Am I doing something wrong with Cyanogen?
I'd like to try ROMs again, but I'd like to save my current setup.
If I reboot into restore mode, and use clockwork mod to backup, will I be able to restore all my settings and everything later, or is there more steps?
Is there a cm build where everything works? So no issues with data, notifications, GPS, or anything else?
When I re ran odin, my clockwork mod seems to have disappeared. Can someone explain to me exactly what clockwork mod does?
I tried flashing multiple times before with both the latest nightly build and the most recent stable build. Both of them had their issues.
When u install cwm and reboot it wipes out cwm and reverts to stock. When u Odin cwm uncheck auto reboot and then manually boot into recovery

I had an issue today where maps and navigation refused to work. I had network data and GPS was working (it was able to find my location), but I couldn't navigate anywhere. When I typed in a destination it just infinitely loaded.
Also facebook timeline refused to refresh, kept saying network error, but I was able to use the browser.
All on CM10 stable build.
Any help?

To uninstall system apps, you need a root enabled file explorer (I use Root Explorer) to delete them from the /system/app folder. The other option is to download a system app remover from the Play Store. Be cautious when removing system apps though, as if you remove the wrong ones it can cause your system to be unstable/unbootable. Stick to the bloatware that you know shouldn't affect the rest of the ROM (AT&T apps, ect.)

Yes, that is called a nandroid backup, and it will be a complete system image. Once you restore it, your system will be exactly the same as it was when you did the backup.
As far as CM 10 stable goes, I have only had one real hiccup. When I open Maps, sometimes the GPS doesn't want to engage. Not sure why and haven't had time to troubleshoot. My favorite ROMs have always been CM though. Make sure when you flash, that you wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, and wipe the divalk cache (advanced menu) from recovery before flashing to ensure a clean flash.
Welcome to Android, and happy flashing!

In my opinion making a nandroid backup of your stable stock rom is extremely important. This will allow you to restore back to a stable build should a ROM installation not work. Aside from that it gives you the ability to try different ROMS without having to redo the entire process should you go back to try one you have already installed.
There are a lot of options for removing "bloatware" out there. I have tried several but stick with Titanium Backup only because I like the layout and the option to backup apps and data (this can create its own issues of course). I can't stress enough on suprtrukr425's comment regarding removal of system apps from a ROM. Read, read, and read some more to ensure that you are removing apps that will not cause problems. If you are unsure leave it be. Generally speaking, I found that most of the carrier specific software is safe to remove.
Aside from that, good luck and have fun.
eukross and
What I usually try to do is this:
1. set up one ROM just how I like it with all the apps and settings
2. than do a FULL backup (backup with Titanium and backup thru clockwork)
3. load up a second ROM and get all the apps restored and settings how u like it
4. do a FULL backup.
Now you can switch from one to the other on daily basis to test one versus the other and which one you like better.
I recommend MIUI. I been a MIUI user for 3 years and i love their work.

[Q] Giant Mess, need help please.

I am kind of stuck and have searched endlessly...
I am rooted and running AOKP - d2att (4.2.1 JOP40D) Build 1.17.2013
AT&T Samsung Galaxy SIII i747
I am trying to update the Rom - Everytime I have updated, I get the "unfortunately, android keyboard (aosp) has stopped" error. I just restore a backup and go to my older version again.
I was preparing to make another backup and noticed I'm out of space, my System Data is taking up 7,938MB!!! I have no idea why or how it got so out of control. I attempted to just do a Factory Reset, it looked as if it worked... however nothing was wiped.
Right now I'm just at a crossroads. I like the custom Rom (minus some serious flaws) but want to be able to update and have some free space. But I'm starting to think returning it to the stock firmware and just settling might be easier?
Any ideas on where I can clear up some space or what I can do to battle the AOSP error? Is there another Rom that may be a better choice, iI know they aren't "better" but an equal alternative maybe. I'm fairly new to all of this but have a decent understanding, I made a switch to Android after owning purely Iphones since the 3G.

Once I download the update I reboot into recovery. wipe cache and dalvik cache. I make a backup and then..
-install zip from sdcard
-choose zip from sdcard
then pick the downloaded update and then repeat the process with the gapps.
Once it loads, all my contacts and things appear there.. with the AOSP error.
I think after explaining this and reading your post, I should do a full wipe and install the newest version of the ROM. I hate to be a pest, what would be the best way to do this. I have Titanium Backup Pro. I really only care about my contacts and text messages and some apps.

You have have to flash the updated gapps if you aren't. They are made for 4.2.2 and nothing earlier. If you flash the same gapps as you flashed earlier you'll get loads of issues.

Ok, so I have ran the update gapps as well previously. A current status update. I backed up all my pictures, contacts and ran backup of system data with Titanium Pro. I wiped cache, cleared the Delvik cache, wiped data.. just realized I wasn't going into Mounts and Storage and not doing a format /system. That might explain why it was getting so massive. After doing those in the correct order, I flashed the ROM and Gapps and new Kernal. Its currently booting...
Success.. Its up and running the new Rom, however.. I have a new question. I have no apps and everything is back to how it all started. I know I can run titanium backup and restore things. But google is automatically installing my apps back one by one. There has to be a correct way to do this? I'm patiently waiting for it to install titanium so I can restore my texts and settings.

you dont have to make a backup every single time you want to update. thats whats taking up all your internal memory. i have 1 stock backup that i made the day i flashed aokp 4.1.2 and then 1 backup of my current setup. if i ever want/need to restore, i'm all set. if you want to make a backup every single time, move the older files to your PC and keep your most recent 1 or 2 on the phone. that'll give you enough space to move forward

Google restoring apps is an option you set during the one time initial setup.
you shouldn't be restoring system data, and it sounds like you're doing that. there are apps to restore texts easily. one that I use is sms backup and restore, which works well and takes maybe a minute.
it's cumbersome to remember every setting so I'd suggest writing them down or something similar.

Problems Flashing and Restoring custom roms

I have had problems flashing and restoring Roms both stk and aosp. By problems I mean getting stuck at boot screen after flash and backups failing at data and if restored without data stuck at boot. The only remedy I have found is a total internal memory wipe. I have tried many wiping techniques none worked long term. Last night when I had these problems again before I did full internal data wipe I used twrp file manager and looked around and notice after factory reset wipe which is suppose to wipe all data but data/media I still had data/app and when I tried to manually erase it failed. even with system mounted I couldn't delete. Maybe someone else having troubles can also check to see if data/app is still there after wipe. I dont know if its recovery related or caused by the aosp sd format. Maybe a combination? I don't think im the only one having these problems so I wanted to start a thread to try to figuer this out. Any help is greatly appriciated.

I'm going to try deleting data/app before booting to recovery when I flash from now on to see if it helps. I think something to do with the size of that folder is corrupting data in recovery as it seems to happen only when I run a rom for a few days adding apps. If I flash right away it works fine.
spleef..If you can check data/ folder from twrp before wiping internal data...I wonder if the data/app is from backup or previous rom as I believe it is being corrupted to not be wipable.

I'm seeing this happen to a lot of people and I don't understand why. I've been flashing all the ROMS and restoring from backups for months now with no issues. Maybe I just got a lucky phone.
Maybe this will help many of you.
In TWRP 2.5.0.0

Back button to the Wipe menu
Advanced Wipe
Tick all 4--
Dalvik
System
Data
cache
Back to main TWRP menu and restore/install
Like I said, I've had no issues doing it this way. May the Force be with you.

thanks for the advice but I have wiped every which way including rebooting recovery after wipe before installing..no luck
I think it started from initially wiping internal memory and reloading data from pc backup to get rid of the aosp stuff on the sd card..
My advice to anyone else who wants the sd card back to stock is to leave it alone.
normally i have no problems going back and forth.... want to hear something even weirder.... restored my aokp and it booted into lifeless.... now either i restored lifeless again...which us possible big fingers and always in a hurry... or something very funny going on in my recovery i am on the older version 2.4.4 i think it is haven't updated it yet cause of all the issues people are having and the different wipe area... just seems weird top me but guess its time to do it and at least see if it will help

I think I will start from scratch with lgnpst and leave the internal memory alone this time and see if that was the cause.
update: Im back to stk going to root then unlock with freegee..Any advice for using freegee it soft bricked me last time and I had to flash tinybin
Well since I went back to unrooted and locked and started from scratch..tried using free gee then flashed tinybins all has gone well..no flashing problems anymore..I think messing with the internal memory is what caused my problems. Been almost a week and I have flashed between several roms and restored from backup many times.

I had not seen this thread before or I would have chimed in by now. My issues don't go back to the 28th; only over the last week. My issue goes like this: I built and flash my own Beanstalk 1.561 ROM, and had no real functionality issues. I played with it for a day or two before realizing I hadn't backed it up. Did that, and at reboot, got a loop. WTF? I immediately thought it was the ROM, so I wiped Factory, dalvik and cache, and ran one of my older back ups. No problem. Flashed a new build of JellyBeer, updated everything, and backed it up. Restart and loop. Now I'm REALLY pissed. Restored my original stock back up; no prob. Okay, now I'm more confused than angry. Go to update my recovery(already running TWRP 2.5, but wanted a fresh install) Install of fresh recovery fails. I forget what the fail was for though, I was spitting nails at this point. Soooooo, really long story a little shorter, I downloaded and reinstalled TWRP 2.5, no problems. Dumped all of my 'standard' flashing files(Banks Gapps, Smoocha kernel, newer ROM downloads, etc), and redownloaded everything. Installed a fresh download of Beanstalk 1.561(build 7/07; original problem was on build 7/05), updated it, and performed a back up. SAME ISSUE. I think you can imagine the string of curses I want to put here. So, for me all back ups older than last week work fine. ANY BACK UP MADE EVEN TODAY FROM ONE OF MY OLDER BACK UPS RESTORES AND BOOTS FINE. But, any back up made form any of my newer builds(7/01 to now) flakes out. I haven't had the time to try other ROMs, and to be honest, I haven't tried to run anyone else's work since trying to install Vectus a few weeks ago. Does anyone have any info, advise, similar experience? This is driving me nuts, so anything would be great. PM me if you want to

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from some of your posts, i never hear you mention wiping /system. That could be some of the problem. Even restoring should have /system wipes.
Also on your backups are there at least 7 files in each? You might have ticked a button and aren't backing up /boot

Thanks for the response. I'll check into that advice and post what happened.
Checking on my one back up that I haven't deleted before anything else. This is what I have:
boot.emmc.win
boot.emmc.win.md5
data.ext4.win
data.ext4.win.md5
efs1.emmc.win
efs1.emmc.win.md5
efs2.emmc.win
efs2.emmc.win.md5
efs3.emmc.win
efs3.emmc.win.md5
recovery.log
system.ext4.win
system.ext4.win.md5
It looks right to me, but honestly, I never looked that closely at the files. Looks the same as the other backups.....

Compared it to mine and it is. You just have the efs also. Maybe try formating /system then restore.
Also maybe try backing up without efs.
Just more options to try.

Also, have you tried a flashable TWRP?

I have had this problem and I thought it was just my ROM, I have been making changes to different apks and then flashing and if it bootloops I restore previous working version. Several times however the restores work and then bootloop or they fail in recovery. When this happens I wipe cache, dalvik, system, internal memory, data, factory reset. Then I go into download mode and LGPNST and flash original stock unrooted, then root then flash teeny bins, then I'm ok. It's a pain, thought it was just from me tinkering with things. Anyway that gets me working again, then I can reflash the ROM.
Update: More recently when I've had this happen I just format data and then push what I'm trying to flash into /data/media. Much easier.

[Q] Dev Edition: Cannot apply OTA update 2.22.1540.4, fails partway through

I have the AT&T version, but I did S-Off, converted to the Dev Edition (CID BS_US002) and now have the stock recovery back on because I'm trying to apply the OTA update which provides a patch to the GPS.
I've applied a previous OTA successfully (after I went back to a stock recovery, of course).
But this time, it fails partway through and shows the red triangle with exclamation point. I was able to boot the phone to Recovery and do a Vol+ & Power which enabled me to select a handful of different options, chose to do the option of installing an OTA .zip file. Anyways I browsed to the OTA file in internal phone storage, executed it and it stops and fails on the following message: "cimext9.odex has unexpected contents". I am stumped because Google couldn't help. But, something similar happened to another person and they had installed Adaway which must have changed system files. I did have AdblockPlus installed for a while but uninstalled it - so could ABP be the culprit, and now what are my options that would enable this OTA to get installed on my phone?
Thanks in advance. Still learning, appreciate the help this board has provided me so far.
I had the same issue with this update, even though previous ones had installed fine. I didn't have adaway installed and never found out what was causing my issue, in the end I flashed a clean .3 and done the update, which installed fine. Then I used Helium to install all my app data and rooted it after that. Had to setup all my root apps again but now running .4
It looks like I'm going to have to flash the stock ROM again because something apparently isn't stock anymore.
Can I do this but keep the apps installed, contacts, music/files, etc? Or does it go back to factory reset?
When I done it i had to install all my apps and stuff again but there might be a way of saving all your stuff, someone else might be able to help you with that, I haven't had an android device that long

Thanks. This will show my ignorance, but by flash the .3, do you mean get the .3 OTA and flash that in the stock recovery, or do you mean grab a .3 nandroid backup?

Yeah I do not have THAT much, but I've done this a few times and have things just the way I like them. Oh well.

I meant grab the nandroid backup, don't know if just a factory restore from the menu would do the job. I just thought that if I'm starting from scratch then I might as well flash .3 : )
