[Q] Update option gone from settings... - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

HI ALL!!! I have been using XDA for years and have always had my questions answered without even have to post one....BUT, I recently bought a xperia play that was flashed to cricket. And I seen there was a new ota update but in my settings/about phone/ there is no update option which i think is very strange. Now I have root if that will help anyone and I'm currently on 2.3.3 & my bootloader is unlocked.
What can i do to be able to update my play? And is it even worth the update?
Thanks alot!!!

It is very good that there is no OTA update option for you. With an unlocked bootloader, you will brick your device with OTA updates ;-).
Don't know how you get updates, you will have to ask a pro - look around in the forum, but not via OTA
// it's not that strange that the option is gone - as you already said, your play is flashed and played with. The owner before you will have deleted the system app for OTA updates.

i just seen--- my bootloader is locked, sorry. But Yeah i got the phone already flashed. but from what i've been seeing, maybe the ota update is not all that good anyway.

[Q] Is there OTA update to newest 4.0.A[...] firmware?

Like in my question. Is there OTA update for UK generic or I'll just have to wait till it's released? My 2.3.3 phone is rooted and I don't want to lose it when updating via SEUS.
I'm on UK generic and no ota update for me yet
I flashed back to 2.3.2 and only get the first update not the 4.0 fw
Only a matter of time though I guess
Got it in Canada yesterday
Just got it for UK generic. Downloading it as I type.
Me too, patiently waits for the OTA update here, good thing they already released it yesterday.. I'm using UK generic too. TS, the availability of the OTA update depends on your place.
can someone confirm OTA update is available for the uk ?, i updated via pc companion and lost root but so I am waiting for OTA to become available
cheers
does root work if you OTA from 2.3.2 to the 2.3.3 (xloud frimware) ?

Yes i received the xloud update (4.0.a) last night over ota and root is still kept. Uk r800i.
If you flash 2.3.2 again then root and ota it will update you to the xloud firmware with root.
1 question do i have to unfreeze all bloatware before i can perform OTA for the new firmware 4.0?
Thanks
Yes you do or else the update will think you have uninstalled them. Just make a list of what you have frozen. Unfreeze > ota to 4.0.a then refreeze whats on your list plus a few other new things.
I just received the upgrade via OTA i guess is to 4.0 since i already have 2.3.3 and the size is 78 mb. I downloaded it correctly, it try to update but after 3 reboots (normal reboots the phone does it itself) it says that could not update, does anyone nows why? I have a rooted Xperia Play and it isnt unlocked.
PD. Everything seems okay it didnt mess up anything, just didnt update correctly.

Same here on my GF Play, I just removed bloatware. Any help?

[Q] Do I need to unroot before updating or can I just update?

I bought my At&T Play this summer off ebay (probably a model handed out at a developers conference). It came rooted already, been using it fine. After hearing about the new update for HD video recording I went to update and realized I hadn't updated from 2.3.2.
Now, I know updating will unroot the device but I am pretty sure I don't use any of the rooted-features. Do I need to unroot before updating the device or can I just go ahead and update? I just want to avoid any issues from updating a rooted device.
make sure the bootloader is LOCKED! If you deleted any SYSTEM APPS you would NOT be able to update!
If the ota update is available for you then you can update and keep root but as Cat_On_Droid has said if you have uninstalled anything off the phone then ota updating will not work.
You will have to reflash to stock (2.3.2) > root > ota to be rooted on the latest fw. It all depends though if your provider has relased the new update for ota. Im not sure what the developers At&T device is running, maybe world generic?
If you update using pc companion or anything other than ota it will wipe your phone so no need to unroot when updating. I have used pc companion and seus to update before with a rooted phone and it just wipes the phone and reinstalls whats missing when it updates.
As Cat_On_Droid has also said make sure your bootloader is locked. If you update normally using PC companion, SEUS or ota with an unlocked bootloader it will brick your phone.

[Q] [JB][OTA] Will rooted Phones get OTA ?

Hi,
I got a Gnex from Singapore singtel.
I didn't want to wait for OTA to 4.1.1 so I rooted and flashed JB 4.1.1
I am running the stock rom from google..
Now that 4.1.2 is released and lot of people seem to have got the OTA, I am yet to get my OTA ...
I am wondering if it is because of the Unlocking and rooting done to my device...
Does Unlocking bootloader and Rooting the device stop OTA update to 4.1.2?
Also pls tell me if you have got your OTA yet or not ...

If you're running the stock ROM images from Google, then you didn't have to root. All you did was unlock the bootloader to flash those. If you rooted after, that was completely unnecessary to the process of switching.
(Sorry just a little pet peeve. People apparently have trouble grasping the difference between rooting and unlocking a bootloader, and the difference between a custom ROM and an official Google factory image.)

NO. Unlocking your bootloader and rooting does not at all stop your device from notifying you that an OTA is ready to download and install. I don't know how many times this has to be posted in these forums before people understand...
Unlocked bootloader does nothing to the OTA process.
Rooting on its own does nothing to the OTA process. If you've kept a custom recovery, the OTA will not install automatically. The custom recovery does give you the option to flash it manually if you'd like, and keep the custom recovery. If you've changed/removed any system files or flashed a different radio, that will prevent the OTA from applying both automatically and manually. If you've started to modify the device this much, you shouldn't be expecting OTAs to work (this is where a lot of "status 7" errors occur).
If you've rooted and returned to a stock recovery, you can let the OTA automatically install, but you will lose root. It takes ~5min to root again, no big deal. You can also try one of the popular apps that "saves" root while you OTA, like OTA Rootkeeper.
Also pls tell me if you have got your OTA yet or not ...

Just because a couple dozen people on a forum have gotten the OTA doesn't mean that you should have gotten it already. Its a tad frustrating, but the OTA has a staggered roll out. It doesn't depend on your location or carrier (assuming you've got takju or yakju firmware from Google), and will get to all devices eventually.
If you'd simply point your browser to the general forum, you'll already see several threads talking about the 4.1.2 update.
Got my OTA update
I got my OTA update yesternight ...

update problems

Hi guys. I have this sgh i747(unlocked) im using it in Europe and i have updated it with kies to 4.1.1. now i want to update is further more but idk how. I cant do it OTA cuz i dont have American card. Is therr any way to update it without getting rooted? And if thete is pls tell me if phone will get locked after that. Thanks in advance, im kinda noobish when it comes with updates. excuses
Is your 4.1.1 ROM completely stock? Have you tried doing an OTA update via wifi?
Once your phone it sim unlocked, it will not re-lock after an update.
Unlocking is permanent, just to confirm. And afaik, the only way you'll be able to update without flashing a custom recovery (I assume you don't want this since you don't want root), is to flash the 4.3 (MJB) firmware via Odin. You can find it in a thread in the General section.
After updating to 4.3, use the OTA made available in the same General section to update to 4.4.2.

Official KK from JB OTA

Hello Guys
another question,i have E980 AT&T but if i returned to stock JB can i update to KK from the phone Software Update OTA? kindly dont answer if you are not sure
Still waiting...
I can't believe that there isn't anyone can answer this inquiry....
People aren't answering because you can find the answer by doing the search, consider these type of questions are discussed a year ago. Yes, you're safe to install through the OTA update as long you're not rooted while you're updating. If you're rooted while doing the OTA update, you will most likely end up with the bootloop.

first of all thanks for your reply, second thing, i know that im safe to do an upgrade through OTA and i know that for sure i dont have to be rooted, and my question is IF i went back to 4.1.2 (JB) can i upgrade officially OTA to KK 4.4.2 if i entered the (software update menu)?
I didn't say to be rooted, I meant it's unsafe to do an ota update if you were rooted. If you flashed the stock jb ROM, and wanted to update to stock kk using the ota, you're safe to do so as long you don't root before your update. Is that what you're asking?
Thanks again for responding, but in my question at the begining i didn't mention the root issue, and i know that u cant update ota if u r rooted, and what im.asking for is when i return to JB 4.1.2 and i want to have the official KK can i updated ota?
My E980 performed this update OTA some time ago. I purchased my E980 when it was ~1 year old from AT&T so it was $50. I suggest you check the AT&T support site to see fi you can update it via them if you step down to 4.1.2. The issue is that the update may no longer be pushed to your phone and you may be required to perform the update manually.
