A few days ago, my Nexus stopped charging while turned on.
I noticed that it still charged when the phone was off. So, I started turning it off @ night to charge it.
Well now... for some reason when I plug the phone in while it's off, it shows me the charging animation (the battery filling up), but then all of a sudden it shows a battery with a bolt running through it (im assuming this means fully charged) and then it does the animation again.
Wtf is happening??
thanks guys.

It sounds like the 'Ghost charging' issue. See if the small pin in the Micro USB port is touching something. Look very carefully! If so, try to bend that pin slightly up just so it doesn't touch the surrounding.
If that doesn't help. Buy a replacement port for like 6 USD. Replacing it will take you at most 15 minutes including re-assembly.
Some people reported problems with using LED controller apps like light flow and flashlight apps, try uninstalling any that you may have and see if the problem is resolved, if not then what the guy above suggested seems to be the only solution

I had something like that before ... my mobile shows it is charging while not plugged in, sometimes it wakes up and sleeps many times repeatedly as if I'm plugging but and unplugging it again ... finally I found people talking about the problem and the solution was using the original cable for charging ... if not solved yet you can do what I did, clean the micro USB port using a small brush and the last thing you can do if not solved , you can left up the micro USB pin using a thing clip, and that's what solved the problem for me ..

hmm... any more input from you guys?
I did a restore so there shouldn't be any apps keeping it from charging now.

the small pin in the phone? The one that's horizontal? how would I bend it up?

only bend it up if you can see it touches the surrounding. Bend it up with the smallest thing you can find that fits in there. BE CAREFULL! do not use force. You need to use little power to lift it up. I myself never had this issue but I did read alot posts related to this. And lifting the horizontal pin up solved it for most of the people that sufferd from this issue.
One question: Did you ever use any charger except for the standard Galaxy Nexus charger? (Including car chargers and such)

no. never. If I mess up, will replacing the charging port resolve the issue?
Bending the pin up resolve the issue for me. The problem returns back after a charge and unplug perhaps pushing the pin back into wrong position. I uninstalled lightflow app, it had no effect.
I have ordered the replacement usb port, middle cover(the usb socket seems worn out). I will post an update

I think I have the same problem. I tried bending the pin, removing LED apps, various combinations of unplugging, turning off etc., and I tried changing the USB PCB in the phone to no avail. I even tried different batteries. I have absolutely no clue what the issue is. This is doing my nut in.

If you have rooted your phone.. wiping battery stats in recovery mode did the trick for me.. It happened to me atleast 2-3 times.. It's not a permanent solution but just a temporary measure..Im not sure what goes on. I've only had my Gnexus for 1 month and its happened like 3 times. Really3 sucks. Anyone know if it is software related? perhaps unrooting would do the trick??
It could also be a hardware problem, it's been reported before. Following is a guide to replace the USB and charging logic board on a Galaxy Nexus (the guide is for the CDMA version, but it's very similar to a GSM version): iFixit Guide You can order the parts for the GSM version here: Replacement part.
I just ordered one because my phone keeps doing the same stupid things: sometimes it charges, sometimes it doesn't, USB connection is completely erratic and it strangely enough always shows the loading icon when it's off and connected, but doesn't actually charge the battery. Tried wiping, reflashing, restoring, switching on and off, wiggling the cable, taking another cable, readjusting the position of the USB pins - to no avail. Now I'm trying replacing the board. Wish me luck!

My Nexus is also having the same problem. Bending the USB pins does the trick but it keep coming back.
Last night I had the same charging problem, so, I applied the same trick, but this time, it created a different problem. When I plugged the phone into my computer, it can be charged but is not recognized by Windows. Also, the headphone plug is acting funny. When a headphone is plugged, it is not detected and music still coming from the speaker. All these happened after I bent the USB pins, might be I applied too much force or might be the pins give up itself this time.
Anyhow, just order a replacement part and hope it will resolve all these problems.
I have fixed the mystery headphone problem, It was caused by the Wechat app that I have recently installed. Once I have unistalled that app, the headphone works properly.
Just waiting for the new charging port USB flex cable to resovled the "USB Deivce Not Recognized" problem.
I have a small question. Can I turn off the display backlight when the charger is connected ?How? That would be great temporary solution
I have read in other forums from people that have replaced the USB port with no results.
What I read and worked for me was to lift the small "tongue" inside the USB port towards the screen. As soon as I did it the charging animation disappear. This, of course, is most probably just a temporary fix and the problem will come back eventually. But at least it's stopped driving me crazy for a moment.
I tried plugging the charger and it charges normally, but it looks like the charger pushes the tongue back down so the "charging when not charging" problem re appeared. I pushed the tongue back up and "fixed" it again.
With this in mind one would think that changing the port would fix the problems but people have reported the opposite :/
BTW, I am using the original charger, although, I have used many other chargers with this phone
Hi,
I had the same problem of ghost charging, it started with phone not charging when connected to charger and then randomly showing charging...
Now discovered it causes vbus_tuna_otg wake lock in Bette battery stats and high system usage in setting> battery, basically not letting the phone go to deep sleep, causing battery drain.
Any way to fix this. ?

Have had a charging issue as well, and solved it.
Hey there,
my SGN was not charging at all not even when turned off, started two days ago, the first evening it was only charging on one out of my three USB cables (each cable has its own wall charger).
Also my PC with "Win 8 Pro" was not recognizing my phone at all.
My first try was a bit stupid, but it worked, well for one day only. I bite on the USB cable, so the part that goes in the phone was a bit deformed, and the SGN was charging again. \o/
Next evening, I had the same problem again, but this time, non of my three cables was able to charge, even after further deforming tries.
My final solution was to use a needle, stick it in the USB port on the phone and bend the small "tongue" a bit up, so it was exactly in the middle.
My Phone was off and the battery removed. I put all together again and plugged the USB cable back in, it started charging while off.
Then I just turned it on, after booting was almost done, my PC told me that my SGN is connected and it was still charging.
I removed the cable, plugged it back in, several times, also on all three charger with its cables, finally my problem seems to be resolved.
btw. My SGN is from November 2011, so one of the first here in Europe.
I hope this can help some other with the same problem.
Kind Regards from Germany,

I had the same problem, GNex quit charging. Fixed it by using a toothpick to gently move the "tongue" in the USB port up towards the LED (screen side). I used a wooden toothpick as I didn't know what would happen if the connectors shorted using something metal.
Apparently, moving the USB plug around when it is in the port can move things out of alignment. Very easy fix, takes less than one minute. You could use a plastic pen cap or whatever you have lying around as a tool.
If you are under warranty, you could always ask for a replacement.
I had this problem a while back, first only some chargers would work and finally none of my chargers worked. In my case it seems like the problem was pocket lint tightly packed at the back of the usb port. The lint was grey and so tightly packed that I couldn't see any thing wrong. I used a fine tooth pick and got a good size wad out and the charging problem was solved. I always thought that the lint prevented the usb cable to be fully seated but maybe I bent the "lip" while trying to get the lint out

Well, I've left my phone on charge with the adapter charger and it was recharged. Now it seems to work also through usb
I got a new Gnex today because of this same issue. It would randomly not charge no matter what charger is was using. What's weird though is I never had an issue transferring files to my Mac and vice versa.

Thought that was lint but in my case even removing the lint it wont charge CORRECTLY -- with the original charger (it was uncharging after some movement).
Then I realize that forcing the usb plug to go more inside the USB port it works. What I did: Removed the black protection because it block the plug to go more inside the phone port. It's now metalic (lol) but not a problem of charging anymore.
I'd buy some heat shrink tubing for that before you cause a fire .

Unfortunately, all that really does is shorten the battery's life. There is no benefit to forcing it to that feel good display of 100%.

Here's my full experience with my Galaxy Nexus charging problem --
I bought this one eBay, came with 4.1.2. Didn't even test charging before I updated it to stock 4.2.2 and rooted it, so I'm not sure if the problem developed after my software update, or if it always had that problem. The eBayer said he didn't know anything about it. I'm on stock rooted 4.3 now, and the problem persists.
The phone has never charged on any of the several AC adapters I've tried. These have been between 250ma and 1A, and they wouldn't work whether the phone was on or off. It would consistently charge when connected to my desktop computer, but that all changed a few weeks ago when I changed out my computer's power supply. Now, the only one trick I've found is to turn on WiFi, BT, GPS, and put the screen at 100% brightness, then plug connect my computer's USB cable, and it will go into charging mode about 35-50% of the time. This works OK, but one extra annoying bit is that when the battery reaches 100%, it stops charging, and won't start again until I do my little trick and replug the USB.
I tried replacing the USB port, but that didn't fix anything. As far as I can tell, that's the only part that can be easily replaced by a normal person. I'm basically managing this by swapping in batteries charged by an external charger.
Got major issue all of sudden and phone won't start anymore
I have been tweaking with my phone customizing it for like one year and didn't had any problem. I flashed with KitKat gummy ROM and then reverted back to 4.3 stock jellybean using ROM manager installed previous saved 4.3 stock rooted ROM.
Further installed clean master and did some advanced cleaning of cache files. WELL after reverting back I started witnessing some major flaws with battery charging status earlier with KitKat I wasn't using any battery saver app but after reverting back to 4.3 I installed DU battery saver and it would like take ages to charge my battery like 7-8 hrs but I wasn't paying much attention to this. I did some advanced cleaning with clean master, but anyways that won't clean any system files that would hinder the functionality of phone right?Problem started cropping up as I detached my power cable without switching off the supply ( even though I had done this previously many times before) , phone flickered/froze and switched off and won't start without external power supply even though i had 57% battery charge that too showed random status, sometimes 0% and sometimes 50+ %. This went looping for sometime then like it won't switch on even with power supply, just showing for a sec the battery symbol with bolt sign when the charging cable is inserted and going blank within 5 sec . It would show the battery icon sometimes and sometimes no sign just plain blank..
Well I tried different ways as suggested like pushing the small tongue inside USB to middle or attaching to laptop w/o battery and putting back n starting but all in vain, no response.
I am not sure any major fault has cropped in the charging circuit or is the phone bricked? Battery dead?
Guys do give some suggestions.. I have been charging using diff usb cables, no response but just that battery symbol for 5sec n going blank..even though i have been charging the phone is getting heated..but does that imply anything?
do provide some insights guys
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the awesome solution. It worked for me before a week. I faced the same problem and now this trick is not working for me ;(. Please help me out.
I don't know how to go about this, because, to my knowledge, its not effecting the phone in any way. Maybe a little drain, but that could be 4.2's problem. But regardless, my phone is always "on charge" no matter where I am. On any ROM this happens, so I know its a physical thing. I've been told that you can use a knife to push the contact up a little, but that only works until I plug it back in the next day. So...... Any thoughts on how to fix this without replacing the charging port? (To my knowledge, that involves soldering very small parts.)

Agreed. At this point you could be having issues where you can't see it, such as where the port is connected to the board.
Had to take port completely off before i noticed... Sprayed with acid (not recommended) and cleaned it, rinsed it, soldered back in place = good to go..... For now

Hi jeep, i have a similar problem but i'm not sure it's the same, i happened a few days ago when myi changed the battery and pugged in the charger, i noticed there was something strange, the phone's screen showed the battery was charging before i pugged in back (just when i placed the new battery). Now it behaves as it's always plugged in charging just when placing the battery in, the phones is turned off and the screen shows charging battery icon (i've tried 2 more batteries), and also there's no usb connection to the PC either.
It's a very bothering problem, the phons won't go into deep sleep, and the screen goes to the screensaver all the time (as it where pugged in charging)...
I always repair my own electronics, months ago i replaced the power button, do you think it could be a bootloader issue or just the micro-usb port?; when you fixed yours, do you think i should take it completely off and resolder?
Any advice will be really appreciated!!
Thanks

Okay, this is a weird one that I researched and researched on the web. I think the problem is somehow related to the USB port. It would seem that my handset thinks it is always charging. I should qualify that statement by saying that with the handset unplugged from the charger and checking the SETTINGS > BATTERY stats it says "0 seconds on the battery" presumably meaning that the handset thinks it has a freshly charged battery and no time has expired since removal of the charger. However, it knows it isn't charging because it also says "89% Not charging". The other weird thing is the handset doesn't screen timeout when unplugged from the charger. That is, I have to hit the lock button to turn the screen off otherwise the 15 second delay doesn't work. I've also checked the developer settings to verify it isn't set to force the screen to stay on. However, the 15 second screen timeout delay works perfectly when the handset is plugged into the charger. After 15 seconds the screen shuts off and the red LED charging light comes on. Lastly, with the handset sitting idle with the screen black if I receive a phone call or text message but just leave the handset sitting there the screen lights up but it never times out after 15 seconds.
Any ideas if this is a USB port problem. I know it sounds like a firmware problem but I've checked just about everything you can think of. I've gone as far as to root my phone, backup all my stuff, then re-flash JellyBean. Speaking of USB port. Has anyone changed one out on a S2 Epic Touch 4G? I know that other S2's have a USB flex cable assembly but I can't seem to find one for this particular handset.

I had tried the toothpick trick that you and others had recommended. In fact it did make a positive difference but I still noticed there were still some strange things going on. I went back a second time but this time with a sewing needle and some magnifier glasses and picked it clean of lint and other junk. Of course with was done with the battery uninstalled. I think I'm back and up and running. We'll see if any of the problems come back. Thanks!

Using the toothpick/needle trick went a long way towards getting it to behave properly. Like you said, it was doing the "do-doop" thing intermittently and sometimes it would go into and out of charging mode so fast that unless you were astute you wouldn't have realized that what it did. To figure it out I went into SETTING > BATTERY and observed that the "discharge time" on the battery would typically stay at 3 seconds which told me the phone thought it had been plug into the charger.
For the last two days it would seem that I have fixed the problem. After you carefully clean out the USB port of lint and junk with a toothpick and a magnifying glass or readers you may also want to consider getting a can of compressed air to blast it clean. I'm talking about the kind of compressed air sold at Walmart or Office Depot that is used to clean electronic equipment to blast the dust away.
Let us know if you get it fixed!
I don't know if cleaning the USB port had an effect on battery time but I'm getting relatively awesome battery performance like I've never seen before. After 12 hours and very light use the cell phone still has 81% battery left on it. It used to be sitting at around 30% by this time in the day.
think im having this problem. thinking its a damaged usb port. old battery everytime you stick the battery in or plug it in it thinks its charging. new battery i just ordered does the same too. its still charging so ill see what happens after but i say charging port probably?

I went through the same exact thing...ordered a new battery thinking the original battery was at the end of its life and causing the phone to behave strangely. With the new battery in place the craziness continued. I was thinking the micro USB was damaged and needed to be replace which BTW isn't an easy thing to change out like some of the other Galaxy phones because the S2 uses surface mount solder connections. You'll need very good eyesight and professional soldier skills to do it right without effing it up. Luckily, doing an extensive cleaning of the USB port fixed the problem. You wouldn't think lint would be conductive enough to cause a problem but alas, it does. Use a toothpick and compressed computer cleaner air with the battery removed when you clean it.
I'll have to try with the toothpick later. It's weird when you go into setting and look at battery it knows when it's on charge and when not on charge. But soon as you put a battery in, it turns on by its self but to the charging screen and can't be turned on unless both charger and battery are in.
Will the battery percentage read accurate still I wonder?

Yup, that is exactly what I saw when I was having the problem. Basically what that screen shot is telling me is 13 seconds ago your cell phone made the "doo-doop" sound as a temporary short within the USB port fooled the cell phone into thinking it had the charger plugged in but just as fast as it thought the charger was plugged in the temporary short went away. In fact the "short" may have come and gone so fast as make it so that "doo-doop" isn't even heard. The key here in recognizing the problem is that while your charge may have been unplugged for hours you'll note the number of seconds that have gone by since the cell phone thought it was charging will be somewhere well under 60 seconds or at least that is what I experienced. I have every confidence that you have the same exact problem and you just need to thoroughly clean that USB port of every speck of lint and dust. Also, make sure your charger USB is clean and lastly make sure none of the pins on the USB connectors is bent and that that middle portion on the cell phone USB is right in the middle and not bent up or down in any fashion.

How did that happen?
BTW, don't forget...if the phone doesn't seem to want to power up hold the VOLUME UP and the POWER buttons at the same time for 15 seconds until you get the reboot option.

I'm in the same boat now [emoji22] Just happened a couple nights ago... Phone is plugged in but not charging. Not that big a deal, as I just got some spare batteries and external chargers. But now I've got to be super-cautious when flashing stuff, as I can't just Odin back without working USB

That's what I'm stuck doing now. I'm not gonna be switching roms anymore lol. Had to buy a universal charger for the battery
I had this issue with mine as well. At first it seemed to be the recovery but I reverted to stock unroot and it still happened sometimes shine blue to make it think it was completely charged I know this phone had a lot of hardware issues. And then I took it apart cleaned it and what not. It still happened. So after some time it just stop happening and functioned normally. I am unsure what the problem was or why it happened. The whole time I really couldn't charge my phone at all unless it was by computer only
I have unrooted stock carrier locked phone but recently my phone has been exhibiting statnge behaviour when charging. This all started happening after I had a big crash after I tried to use HTC connect... Usually when I charge my phone the screen might come on breify by itself once or twice and display that it is entering rapid charging or normal charging. But now I've noticed that the screen comes on at random times and stays on!
Google searches reveled that it can be a settings g in developers menu but I haven't even enabled that!
Another Google's search said it could be a faulty cable but I have taken very good care of my cable being careful to never kink it and when I try to wriggle it it doesn't seem to have a short.
Any help on this would be appreciated thank-you

Check to make sure that there isn't lint or something like that in the port. Something similar happened to me. You can tell if something is in there if you plug the cord in but it isn't seated properly and you can rock the cable back and forth when it's plugged into the port. If so, use a sewing needle to dig it out (power off first). When I did it I couldn't see it in there and didn't feel it at first digging around. After multiple times of plugging it in and having to push it in hard to get a good connection, the lint had packed down and it took a bit of scraping around in there to get it out

Are you using a QuickCharge power adapter? The thing I've noticed, is that with QuickCharge it disconnects and reconnects between 55-65% (and therefore the screen lights up), in order to adjust the power output, so that the battery won't be harmed.

Yes! I am using Quick Charge in fact the stock cable and adaptor that came with my phone and the behaviour you mentioned is correct and it used to do that . But now it seems it is doing that and then the screen won't turn off... actually all this started happening after I had a catastrophic crash when trying to access HTC connect. The phone rebooted then since then, so I may try a factory reinstall although I admit but the two issues might issues might not be connected.

Have you tried another adaptator ?
My view is your charger issue.

you can also try to clean the phone charging port using old toothbrush and little amount of alcohol. I had the same issue with charging and it helped
