do you want an antivirus or an anti theft app sir?
Every now and then, we hear of new malware written for Android devices. I believe it's certainly better to be a bit cautious. Personally, I use Lookout Security & Antivirus.
I use Avast, its really easy to use, and like it has been said already, better to have it and not need it
its better to have an antivirus app...and a good anti theft app too.
I would recommend avast
Its free and powerful...
Lookout
I haven't used Avast so I can't comment on it's features, however Lookout is a good antivirus and anti theft.
I once lost my on silent too. I used Lookouts "Scream function" (used the lookout website) and I was easily able to find it ^^. It has a gps function which can be used on the website too!
I have tried Mobile security apps, almost all of the top-rated ones, Lookout, Kaspersky, AVG... And I can't seem to like any of them, I personally don't download shady apps, or visit sketchy sites on my Android devices, but with that being said, I think they are very useful, and serve a purpose, I recommend Lookout for a good free one, and Kaspersky for a good paid app.
Hope this helps!

I use avast also but I disabled it's anti virus feature. I believe this type of OS isn't really infectable unless you root your device or is unwary of what you are installing on your phone. It's not that dangerous like windows in which you could get virus by just visiting sites, bluetooth, removable drives etc.
Thanks for the responses guys I will try the eset one and review it. Ive had avast and lookout but I have ended up uninstalling them

lookout is a popular choice.
I think the people that use it use Lookout, but it's up in the air as to whether or not you actually need it.
Lookout caught a virus from a flashable zip I was downloading from a site I was unfamiliar with and the virus was legit.
posting & replying via the XDA Premium app
^^Good to know.
I use antivirus pro.
I dont even think they work...

They're a scam, they will only catch known viruses which you won't get unless you pirate apps...antivirus is a scam on the phone because google gets rid of things before anyone...it goes google then everyone else, no need for it if you odnt pirate or download apps like super sexy naked screaming Chinese and japanese school girls...
Lookout also backs up your contacts and has the features to locate/lock your phone remotely if its lost or stolen

Google catches and screens applications for viruses and malware before they're posted on the market? Either you have WAY too much faith in Google, or you really haven't read much about the Google application posting process.

Yeah, pirating apps is the best way to get a virus. I don't really bother with antivirus software on my phone. I just use Lookout for its location feature and I use Prey to lock down my phone if it's ever lost.

If you can read I said google will catch the virus before anyone!!!! Meaning antivirus is a wasteeeeeeeeeee

Google lets any app onto the market, its been addressed many times. They dont screen for anything... hence a thousand fart apps and of course, malicious software.
Dudes, you don't need no virus protection what are you guys retards lol? Almost like computer viruses, I never spend money on virus protection its all a scam. I can manually remove it myself or with free software. YOUR PHONE DOESN'T NEED VIRUS PROTECTION LOL. Those apps offer free STUPID services to you so they can trick you into paying their yearly subscription fees. Lookout really isn't free, or at least their only legit feature(remote locking) which cost 29.99 a year. If you think you need virus protection on your phone you need to switch to apple with the cool kids.

i think anti virus are useless apps. tell me anyone ever got a virus with there android? i think they just lagg the crap out your phone and eat your battery faster. even the sprint rep said himself you dont need anti virus there is no claim in sprint that actually happens.
Just received an interesting email from Skype...
Thank you for downloading and using the Skype for Android software. Unfortunately, it has come to our attention that if you were to install a malicious third-party application onto your Android device, it could access the locally stored Skype for Android files. These files include cached profile information and your instant message chat history.
We take our users’ privacy very seriously and are working quickly to protect you from this vulnerability, including securing the file permissions on the Skype for Android application. This update will be available shortly and as always we urge you to install updates to benefit from our continuous fixes and improvements.
Until the update is released, to protect your personal information, we advise that you as always take care when selecting which applications to download and install onto your device from the Android Marketplace.

This is just one of many instances where software designed for a bad purpose has been a problem, especially with the Android os. Maybe there are no reasons to worry about an actual VIRUS, but the fact still remains that 3rd party apps can contain keyloggers and other means of stealing information from your phone.
Its not too far-fetched to believe in apps that, once installed, can lock you out of your phone or possibly even wipe all the data from it.
so does the TEP app from Sprint itself. It also helps you find your lost or stolen phone by pointing you in the general direction if your GPS is on. it can wipe your phone if you think it was stolen too

This isn't really the best place to discuss this but my experience...
There are android malware, but if you're getting your apps from reputable sources like the Play Store, It's probably not worth running AV unless you get some other benefit from it.
I have Lookout installed on all my phones for its lost-my-phone protections like finding the phone's location and remote wiping it. Lookout does antivirus scanning too, so I let it run weekly. In 18 months on 8 different phones I've never had a virus detected. Assuming Lookout is competent at virus detection. I think that shows the threat is low, but it does exist.

I haven't had a need for a security app yet. Has Lookout prevented anything malicious for you?
Don't waste the battery and cpu cycles on something that quite frankly is borderline worthless. The trust thing is ironic. You will trust an app you didnt write to protect you from other apps you didnt write

Avast for lost/stolen device tracking, allows device disable if the SIM is changed. Also allows you to lock, unlock, wipe, sound alarm by SMS. Hopefully I never need to use it.
From what i understand any perceived need for antivirus/malware scanning will disappear with 4.2 and the new Play Store.

Antivirus apps are pointless.
For lost/stolen I've been loving SeekDroid for a while now. Very nice app and works with out fail any time I test it.
Search for pdroid !
Btw antivirus = gimmick nothing else !
That's a good app I used to use it but it gets owned by cerberus. Try that it has way more features for a one time 3.99 fee. U can test free for a week.

+1 for seekdroid. Got it for free from Amazon a while ago but have found that its pretty good. Haven't had to 'test' it for real just yet but gives me a bit of piece of mind.
Reality is that if your phone is stolen, likelihood of getting it back is pretty slim. For me, real important part would be able to wipe my data to protect myself from anything more than losing a couple hundred bucks on a device.
None, I don't believe in them. If my phone gets lost or stolen then that's that, little can be done afterwards. Police often times wont help and knocking on the persons door and demanding the phone will get you nowhere except property trespassing. Even then, I doubt my offender would want to use any of my information stored on my phone. Any smart thief would know to wipe the phone clean to avoid any of these apps which don't do much. As far a viruses go, really? The only reason anti-virus apps where made was to satisfy the needs of the paranoid, lets leave it at that.
I was mainly speaking of anti theft app, and not to get the phone back, but yes to wipe everything!

cerebus. it's great. went to the washroom and left my phone in my meeting room. i come back and check my email and there's a photo of my co-worker trying to punch in the wrong PIN code. lol.
I dont have one installed right now, but when I do it's Lookout. I have had lookout stop installation for an app before, I was sideloading it. I dont keep one installed for normal use of the phone and Play Store, but if I was going to be sideloading apps again I would use it for that.
Cerberus is by far the best security app I've used.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...51bGwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5sc2Ryb2lkLmNlcmJlcnVzIl0.
I wonder if I should use avast. I used it on my HTC Desire HD for years. First of all because of the anti-theft feature but it might also be usefull against some random exploit/malware.
Anyone can recommend some other free anti-theft app ? Any Avast users here? How secure is the anti-theft ? How about battery drain and performance loss with Avast?
Thanks
I recommend cerberus anti theft you can also get a zip to flash in recovery so it can't be uninstalled or deleted after factory reset

Cerebus looks great, but to the OP Avast also allows you to create a CWM flashable zip file containing just the anti theft functionality. My advice? Install the whole suite, flash the anti theft... And then immediately after remove all the other stuff! IMHO anti theft is all you need, and Avast gives you loads of features for free.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
cerberus isn't for free :/
Hmm need to look into how exactly that will work with the avast anti theft flashable zip.
How secure is the avast anti-theft ?
Why removing the whole suite after installing the anti-theft? Is it useless / bad /?
Thanks
Cerberus!

Its a small one time fee with Cerberus.. Definitely worth it for the features if you lose your phone.
Antivirus isn't needed and is just a waste on system resources.

I've heard nothing but great things about it
Just look into the android market. Ppl complaining about certain features getting turned off for their license without any answer from the support. Generally bad support. I thought it would be just a handful of mad ppl but as I kept on reading...
And then again.. who is ceberus and why should I rather trust that company with all my data than for example avast ?
I just installed Cerberus Anti-Theft on my HTC One, and I received a free lifetime licence! Just thought i'd share.
And it works fantastic on the HTC One. Every single feature Cerberus offers, (which are quite a bit!).
Disclaimer: I do not work for them, there is no catch, I just think it's THE best anti-theft app out there!
