Hello guys,
I currently have my good, old, HTC Hero but I think it's time for a change. Is the Motorola Defy worth buying?
I am interested in the following:
1. is it easy to have custom roms?
2. any chance to have a working Gingerbread ROM?
3. are those 512 Mb of RAM enough for these days?
4. should I consider buying Defy or should I just look for another phone?
What's the best Quadrant score you know for Motorola Defy? My record is 428.
Thanks!
If you can wait, I suggest getting the Motorola ATRIX when it comes out at the end of February.
Swyped from my HTC Desire running LeeDrOiD 2.3d with Tapatalk.
I can wait, my Hero is pretty decent at this time. Hummm, but what if the ATRIX will cost 3x or even 4x more than Defy ( I could get a Defy for 240 Euro / 333 AUD )? What's the price that ATRIX is supposed to have at launch?

Supposedly $599 off contract with AT&T, but it won't be outdated for quite a while yet

Hummm. I hope it will be available worldwide. When I bought my Hero I did so just because my desired phone at that moment, Motorola Droid, was not available in Europe. Right after I bought my Hero, Motorola launched Milestone. I kinda regret not buying the Milestone.
Anyway, my first 4 questions at the first post are still still waiting for some answers, guys. Thanks!

Think the ram would be enough for a while, I've seen people posting quadrant scores 1100-1590, the other plus side is the price and the ruggedness of the phone, I'm considering one myself.

This phone has done nothing but surprise me. i have a samsung epic that is mine personally and the defy is actually owned by my work. This phone easily went head to head with the epic in performance (until the epic got ext 4 hack), and in some cases has actually performed better (ex dungeon defender refused to install on the epic for a long time but have been playing on the defy since it was released).
The only down side is the locked bootloader that makes custom roms (including a GB rom) almost impossible, however there is a great group on here that is willing to help you customize the phone.

1. Not really, due to the encrypted bootloader - it is possible but it makes things much more difficult than on other handsets.
2. Almost certainly not until the bootloader can be decrypted in some way or Motorola release it themselves.
3. Yeah, plenty.
4. You're the only person who can answer that.

I'm using Mini Info, and my RAM is at a constant 50MB (sometimes less) out of an available 476MB. This phone really knows how to handle stuff. Get it!
512 mb ram is enough to run every application
Standart Quadrant Score is 800 ~ 1000
I see a Guy with a Sense Rom, JIT and OC to 1200 mhz he get 2000+

Yes. Very nice device.
i have an HTC Desire but we got the kids Defys .... must say im very impressed with the defy ... go for it
I got my Defy a couple of weeks ago having spent many hours flashing and re-flashing my Hero with the fantastic roms and kernels built by erasmux, elelinux, radu, Cronos and the others. I have to say I was initially a bit disappointed that I couldn't do the same with my Defy. I did root it and started to tweak it a bit, but to be honest it's such a brilliant phone that there isn't the same imperative as there was with the Hero. For the money you can't get better, and I'm amazed that it's not more widely known. If you read the reviews it's been universally admired, and I've not been disappointed. The screen is outstanding, it's as tough as old boots and it flies, even with Motoblur on it. And if you don't like Motoblur, just remove the widgets and you'll hardly know it's there. It's also a good size - more manageable than some of those 'high-end' phones (Desire HD, Samsung Galaxy S etc) and just as capable.
Can't recommend it highly enough.

There'll still be the bootloader issue though.
Until Motorola follow through on their promise to find an alternative solution to encrypting the bootloader that's more hacker-friendly, if indeed they ever bother to do so, we'll be stuck with custom ROMs that are based on the same version of Android as the official ROMs.

I just got a quadrant score of 897 running at 1ghz. Nothing major. I could get 1500s easy if my gf didn't install so many games anyway, the phone is worth buying and is waterproof as it claims to be

How does Defy handles Flash?
I would say no, if you can wait then wait a bit!
Encrypted boot-loader means you have to hope Motorola release updates. Wait and see of Motorola change their policies about bootloader, they *may* do it after that youtube comment went wild all over the internet and they responded, but they may not either.
I will never ever buy a phone that is locked out this way. Right now all new phones released by Sony Ericcson and Motorola have locked bootloader. So if I were you I'd stick to HTC or Samsung.
I mean look at something like HTC HD2 or HTC Desire, these phones are now pretty old but have multiple gingerbread ROMs, cause they are fully hackable. of course anything that is a Nexus is also hackable and the Galaxy S range from Samsung is good also.
If I needed a phone right now, I'd be looking at the following:
- Google Nexus S
- Samsung Galaxy S
- HTC Desire HD
- HTC Desire Z
They are all known to be hackable and recent models and will perform better than a Hero.
Hi all
Do you recommend buying Desire ?!
I tried Android at Wildfire and found it so good and amazing so i sold it and want to get a new more powerful device
It costs around 420~500 USD in my country - Egypt and the devices in that range is New Galaxy Ace or used Galaxy S and i don't like both
already compared it to Desire S and couldn't find any huge different which will cost me more 100 USD !!!
so do you recommend buying HTC Desire ? and is it true it will updated to New Sense same one in Desire S ???!!!
Desire S has the double of space (1.1 GB internal memory) compared to the normal Desire
Desire will never get sense 3.0
But if u can spend a bit more or found a cheap offer, i'll go for the samsung galaxy s 2, once buyed it u can stay with it for 2-3 years without need to change phone (the same is not true for the desire s in this moment, because it's already "old")
Just my opinion if you going to buy a new phone, anyway i will stay with an other year or more with my desire (got it in april 2010) before buy an other top phone, this is my personal philosophy
I just recently bought a used Desire for about $200 CAD and I love it.
My voice plan with Rogers comes to like 22$ and I have no desire to add a $25 data plan to get $50/month plan to get a phone subsidized from them.
I just the App2SD with a 1GB ext4 partition on my SD card to get around the limited space the phone has.

Galaxy S II will cost me about 800$ and this is too much for phone , buying i7+6GB laptop will be better idea
i think that i already saw costume roms for Desire with sense 3 and circle lock screen or i am wrong ??!!
and i am still noob at Android but i thing with root i can add more extra space for phone to install apps to it exactly like installing them to phone memory and it's so easy to get 8 or 16 GB SD Card ???
and as you said Desire S seems to be old and same as Desire so i think spending more money on it will not be a good idea
What about Desire HD , If i managed to get it with good deal do you recommend it ?
will it be updated to new Sense the one in Sensation officially or also will be custom rom ?

DHD is a fair bit better and still has some decent rom support. It will probably get the sense update, so if you can't really find a newer phone i'd say yeah, go for it.
i'm also pretty much new with android and htc so let me give you some n00b insight...
i've owned Desire for 3 months and i got used to it by now. it can give you both joy and anger. it depends on how you use it. if you live it on stock ROM it'll work smooth and you can find tips and tricks how to make it somewhat better without rooting and flashing roms: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=653310
if you decide to root and flash custom ROMs then you can get even better device with many tweaks already built-in new software. for example you can flash Desire HD rom and therefore don't have to actually buy DHD (hardware is not that much different IMHO). now i'm running InsertCoin Gingerbread based rom which hasn't even been released for Desire yet, with many Sense 3.0 goodies which probably won't be officially included in GB update at all. as a downside, these roms can have some bugs, but are overall better than stock. just take a look into some rom development topics...
Desire has it's flaws but overall i'm waaay satisfied... although it's now an old rag D) it still kicks many "smartphone" butts out there. i came from nokia x6 and now i wonder why did i go there in a first place...
anyway, i think you can't go wrong with it. you can of course buy DHD for somewhat better hardware or spare some more money for sensation, but if you're unviling to do so, Desire is still great choice...just my 2 cents!! cheers, i hope this helps a bit!

The problem is getting SGSII or Sensation that thier prices are too high now and sooner their prices will be lower than now so i don't think it's good idea to get 2 months old phone right now ,,,
i liked HTC Sense a lot so i am choosing from HTC not Samsung also HTC have bigger support from developers than Samsung as i can see
but i read that it's sound is low and LCD Screen not that good ,, is this true ?

mmmmm , DHD Roms working on Desire ?? very good and new info for me...
and i am agree with you that there is no much difference at specification just bigger screen and camera but ditching 12MP Cam - the best i ever used - means that i don't care that much for it
so your are happy with desire and it's worth it's money,,, is there any news about official update from HTC ???
and what is DHD latest official version right now ??
Comparing DHD to Incredible S latest HTC one core device they are the same !!! and i think that DHD is even better !!!

yeah, x6 had much better camera, and camera is my only problem with desire. but the phone (any phone) is never meant to be a substitute for real camera..so no real prob here....
DHD rom for desire is actually a port, so desire can run it. it's not THE rom from DHD. with that said, you can put virtually any rom into desire but with more or less tweaking to the point where hardware eventually becomes incapable of running much newer rom. therefore sense 3.0 stuff are greatly tweaked for desire to be able to run it. it's not like the real thing but pretty much close. and it's getting better every day... modders here are the wizards, i tell you...
so yeah, i'm happy with desire, didn't regret spending the money on it at all!
as for the official update from HTC, there were many contradictory statements, and the final one is that there WILL be gingerbread update but no word on sense update. you can find it in desire-general section.
I'm using Desire since April 2010, so it's more than a year now. I was very excited about the whole Android thing. And still am. But the phone itself has some big issues. First of all is the huge lack of internal memory. I can't even install the most necessary apps. Secondly it's the overheating problem. My Desire was one of the first Amoled batches and it had issues with the SOC. While using processor demanding apps like navigation, flash playback etc. It was constantly rebooting. Had to repair it. For 3 times. Then it's the speaker and battery. They both are weak. After my previous E61 Desiree's speaker really sucks. Camera is decent too. But in overall I still like, though I would really consider buying SGS back then. Now I'll wait for another year or so. Btw I'm now using MIUI ROM and it gave a second breath to Desire. Good luck with buying!

So my contract is up for renewal on monday and they have offered me a new phone if i stay with them another 12 months.
I currently have a DHD wich i love to bits, but is there a better htc model. they have offered me a desire sensation, or a desire s, but i have been reading up about the phones and none seem as good as the DHD.
And obviously iphones are a definate no no, although it would be good to get one and run it over in my van!!!!

If you're talking about the HTC Sensation, thats the best choice you can make ... Dont know if a Desire Sensation exist... Think in a couple of days theres a way to permroot the Sensation, then you will have a lot of fun with that stuff
Samsung Galaxy S 2 is the smarttest choice, HTC Sensation is the second choice. Both are dual core
I would go for the sgs 2 as well. They have Cyanogenmod nightly builds which is the most important thing to me these days. Further down the list is the superb hardware.
Sent from my Cyanogenmod 7 phone.
Sure, the SGS is a nice one, but in my opinion it looks... simply cheap
I have the optimus 2x and it doesn't feel faster than the DHD. I believe later versions of android will utilize the second core better but until then you won't feel much difference.
To your question, the galaxy s series are very fast and with open bootloaders and everything, but the feel very cheap and plasticy when held ( imo ) I wouldn't buy them over the DHD or the sensation. On the other hand they do have cm7 support but many hardware drivers are missing so they don't work as good with cm as our DHDs do. I bet the Sensation will have a more operational cm built before the sgs II despite the head start. If you don't care about cm though or you don't mind/like the way the sgs II feels in your hand, it's the best you can buy.

The Sensation now has s-off and able to install custom Roms. Think I saw the info on Android Police.
LeeDrOiD already has a custom rom for it. He supports all his roms well and has a high attention to detail.
I personally would have bought one and LeeDrOiD powered it, but it doesn't support 850mhz (edit: 3g) , which I really want now. ....... So a SGS2 on order.

sgs2 is a great device even better than dhd but i love the sense ui
OK, its time to upgrade my trusty DHD.....
...but what gets my hard-earned (no, really) pennies?
To me there are 4 options........
1) HTC One X
2) Samsung Galaxy Note
3) Wait until the 30th and get the Samsung Galaxy SIII
4) Keep the DHD for another 12 months and benefit from a cheaper contract.
So, if it was your pennies getting spent, where would they be going?
I'm going to post this question in the HOX, SGN, and SGS3 forums too, to (try to) get a balanced view.
I was already to get the Note, then I picked one up and it's a Samsung. It was like Agent J and the noisy cricket. The One X still pisses me off with it's non removable battery and no external storage slot. The SGS III will be a Samsung. I don't understand why their phones feel so cheap. HTC's plastics aren't that toy-like.
Sprint's Evo LTE gives me hope though. It's nearly a One X with a bigger, though still not removable, battery and it has a micro sd slot. Maybe the next upgrade for the "flagship" will get them also.
Just my thoughts but I guess I would wait to see what else is coming. The SGS III may be better than I think or maybe something else can make me a fool.
I'm liking ICS on it now and it will only get better when the official update comes out.
Sent using the power of the dark side.
Thanks BLG - I know where you are coming from.
Having owned 5 HTC devices on the spin, I feel a little grubby myself considering Samsungs! ;-)
However, here lies part of the problem - I think I'm bored of HTC, and the One X and One S are just so.... safe looking. Where is the design flair? Plus, I've never been much of a ROM flasher (although I did put Vegacomb on my tablet), preferring to have a device that works rather than list the compromises and things which dont quite work properly, so stock Sense is now getting very stale indeed.
Maybe I need to turn to the dark side briefly just to satisfy my curiosity that the grass isnt always greener?
I'm sure I will go wrap my mitts around the SGS III asap. I just want my next device to look, feel and dammit, smell better than what I have. Besides, touchwiz is just
UGLY.

Hmmmm, an interesting alternative, there. Whatever I decide, I'll probably keep the DHD anyway and use it as a test device for flashing/generally mucking about.
I've decided (with a feeling of I'm cheating on a loved one) to get a Note online, then I can return it under distance selling laws if I find it unbearable to live with.
Genuinely, many thanks to all who have contributed to this thread. Your insight has been much appreciated.

When you say dark side, meaning Apple of course, have you ever considered Windows Phone? I'm much the same as you. Although playing around with the various DHD custon ROMs and having the freedom of Android has been enjoyable; I'm now thinking I just want a phone that works and doesn't need to be mucked around with. Was tossing up Windows Phone, maybe the HTC Titan as an upgrade. Thoughts?
Hi Guys,
As per my signitaure yes I am using an international version of the Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I9300
Now I have been down with samsung since the first galaxy so I am a bit tired already of the same features..
, I know its a violation to mention other devices in this section
But coming friday, I will be swapping my phone with an quad core HTC One X but I have read this one dreadful article,
Wifi-Bug!!
Now, I was viewing a lot of reviews and now is more confused but I really wan't to have the first hand ideas from HOX users themselves..
So how does it compare to the S3 in terms of;
-Gaming,(I play Gameloft games like MC3,MC4, Wild Blood, NOVA 3, interested in Tegrazone games hence the interest to switch)
-Camera
-CM 10.1 Stability? (it sucks on the S3 btw)
-Staying on stock ROM 4.1.1+root is worthwhile for the timebeing? I am now becoming lazy of flashing roms LOL
-Build quality? Does the white one stain easily?
-Wifi Stability? (read that article regarding wifi issues with this particular handset)
Please please help me out guys with such dilemma before friday, thanks in advance!!
anyone could help a bretheren in thy dilemma?

Gaming is awesome! Even my Nexus 7 can't play as good as One X.
Camera is very good, but on CM it's worse than on Sense.
CM 10.1 is stable, working fine if you've got 1.12 H-BOOT or lower.
I'm stuck at ViperX, best ROM for this phone.
Build quality is way better than samsung, though I have the grey one. The screen scratches pretty easy if you've got sand in your pockets.
Wi-fi is fixed in newer models, if you'll get one from the store, then you'll be safe I think. Wi-Fi is much better on Sense.

Whoah thanks much!
I pretty much game only in my smartphones, I thought Nexus 7 was the same tegra 3 platform? oh well.
I read somewehre thath lowlight pictures are good with the HOX
CM10.1 needs parts like different kernels, etc? not a one time flash?
ViperX rom is based on 4.2.2?
Yeah that's one factor that attracted me to the one x its the build, would it get stained with jeans? Yeah I am in the Mid East, we have lotsa sand here.
Oh this phone was like used for about 6 months, still has wifi issues? signal drops or cuts off? in stock Rom you mean?
1. Quite good. Gets a little warm though and battery life will definitely be a problem.
2. Nice quality on Sense ROMs, but on AOSP, not so good.
3. Beta-3. Extremely stable whatsoever.
4. If you like stock. Most people don't.
5. Solid, if you get a device from a newer batch. Some of the earlier models had weird gaps, wifi problems etc.
6. Never had any issues.
Keep in mind, we don't have S-OFF so you need to flash kernels and recoveries using fastboot commands which is a pain in the ass.
If I was you, I would never exchange SIII to a hox though.
Guys anymore points I need to consider?

Nexus 7 has 1300 MHz, One X got 1500 MHz.
You don't need any special kernels with CM10.
ViperX is based on latest Sense build, Android 4.1.1 and Sense 4.5/4+.
I don't have any Wi-Fi issues after 8 months of usage, but the screen on my Desire Z looks better than the one on One X.
Also, there's a *thanks* button, so you don't need to write the whole word

1. that wouldn't be much of a problem, do you have gameloft games installed? I read somewhere it is laggy for HOX, true?
2. that's nice to know
3. Beta 3 you mean CM10.1 based on 4.2,2? wow if very stable!
4. Lazy to flash but yeah I am capable of doing so.
5. I wish this will be part of the newer batch.
6. Issues on? How about that 3 button menu icon that appears in apps, can it be disabled?
7. How are the headsets which is supplied? is it symmetrically wired of maybe the right earbud has shorter wiring than the left (that kind of headsets I don't like)
I thought there was already an S-off released for the HOX, I'm sure I have read it somehere here.
Was thinking of the HTC one X even before having an S3

hox scales the cpu depending on how many cores its using, 1.5 = 1 core, 1.3 = 2 cores, 1.2 = 4 cores anyway
hox has better camera, faster in benchmarks and looks better outside and n screen
s3 has removable battery, sd slot, 50 GB dropbox and that nice eye tracking app.

1. Nope not at the moment.
3. Yes, it is 4.2.2 and haven't found any problems or bugs.
6. WiFi issues. The on screen menu button menu can be disabled if you have a stock ROM higher or equal to android 4.0.4. All of the custom ROMs have the button disabled by default.
7. It's symmetrical.
S-OFF was released for the North American variant of One X, not our phone unfortunately.
Wanna swap phones with me?
I have this 2 devices. One x white and gs3 white.....
I prefer the gs3 over one x..
Why?
Better GPS, camera is really better than hox. Video Call over 3g, better runing games without lag. The wifi connection is better and sound have a big diference, makes hox looks soo poor
