[Q] GAPPS Question (updates, rationale, etc.) - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

New to the custom ROM world and really enjoying it so far! But regarding GAPPS.... doing some searches, my understanding is that they cannot be bundled in with the ROM becuase of licensing issues. That's understandable.... but if google pushes out an update for gmail, maps, etc., will I still get the update via the play store? Or will I have to get updates from the ROM developer when he/she pushes out an updated GAPPS zip and flash that?
Thanks.

You will get an update in the play store for those apps.
Eventually the gapps will be updated to include the updates.

Thanks El Daddy.... so is it safe to update or will it conflict with the GAPPS delivered via custom ROM developer? Is it best to wait iuntil the developer puts out a new GAPPS package?

Keep in mind Gmail and Maps aren't included in the most recent Gapps any longer since they ARE available on Play. Of course there are some custom versions of Gapps that retain these apps.
Play, Maps and Gmail will update themselves to the latest versions regardless of what version of Gapps you flashed (assuming Gmail and Maps are available in your region).

Thanks!

Google Talk and video

Running latest CM7 nightly, downloaded latest available GAPPS from in ROM Manager, but Google Talk has no option for video chat that I can see.
Help please =/
Nevermind, answered my own question:
20110613: This package is designed for Android 2.3.4, and will not work on 2.3.3. It contains all of the applications updated for 2.3.4, but does not include the new Google Talk with video chat due to there being no compatible library available for non-ARM7 and non-neon board devices, from Google or another OEM. This package should work on all 2.3.4 ROMs, and has the latest Android Market update in it, which includes in-app purchase support. This package is listed in the above table, ROM Manager, and latest/7/universal. It should be used with ROMs such as CyanogenMod 7.1.0 (though at the time that I'm updating this, 20110307 is still listed in the ROM Manager manifest for the CyanogenMod Nightlies).

Thanks! Wouldn't show up in market on my phone but does on the website.
I wonder why they aren't including this version in the gapps?

[Q] Google Music app not compatible with my device

Hi,
I'm new to android and modding in general. I've flashed AOKP + gapps on my device. Some of the gapps would not appear in my app drawer no matter how many times I reflashed them, so I installed them manually from the market. The problem is this is not working for Google Music, it does not show up in the market on my device, if I browse to it on the market website, it says that Google Music is not compatible with my device because it is not available in my country (I'm in Canada) which makes no sense since the device shipped with the Music app installed on stock image. Anyone know how I can get it to work?
Thanks
Although the app ships with it if Google Music isn't available in your country you can't download it from the Market. Same with here in the UK
Google search the APK and install it via a file manager on the phone
Install the gapps listed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1484457
Good luck
oh ok, I tried faking the market to a USA one and it still didn't work. I downloaded the apk and installed it manually and it's working.
One question though, shouldn't the AOKP or the gapps that I flashed already mean I should had got it without trying to download it from the market? do you know why some of those gapps like maps, navigation, etc did not show up at all until I downloaded them myself?

Important: New Gapps package is bare, so there is no legal trouble for anyone. Please do not ask us to include any extra apps. A wipe is required. I'm sorry if it's missing some apps not available in your country via the Market, but that's the exact reason we cannot include them in the package. This means Google Wallet is no longer included in. It will still work, but you must add it yourself. Thanks for your understanding.
Build 22 is still 4.0.3. Every single build and milestone is built directly from source. As such, we must wait for Google to release sources for 4.0.4. After that, we'll be working day and night to merge the new changes and bring you the latest!

[Q] Google Apps

Can anyone help with the answers to these questions? I have searched but not found the answers.
1. There doesn't appear to be a changelog for the 29/09 gapps. What's different from the 26/07 version?
2. If I've already flashed the 26/07 version then can I just flash 29/09 over the top?
3. Won't the Play store just automatically update the apps to the latest anyway?
Thanks for reading...

Desire HD, Jellytime 17.1, Synergye's KangBang-Kernel v0.2. Stable, no black screens, no random reboots. Lovely.
1 The difference is simply that have been updated and optimized with the latest version of Android
2 Yes, there is no problem, new gapps will overwrite the old apps
3 Play store notifies you when updates are available, you can do them manually or automatically

updated google apps .zip?

With the unofficial CyanogenMod 10.1 releases now fairly well established and Android 4.2.2 quite stable on our DHD's is it possible to update the google apps .zip to include the current google apps. The gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip file contains older google core apps that each time I flash my custom cyanogenmod 10.1 ROM they need to get updated from the Play store.
Is it possible to include the current google apps in the original ROM or is it possible to create a custom google apps .zip with the current apps? Has anyone already done it? Just interested as each time I flash a new ROM I have to go through an extra step whilst the older google apps get updated - not a huge issue but if it can be avoided?
Andy
Not the correct section for a thread of this type. But in answer to your questions:
Bundling GApps with the ROM breaks licensing laws, so that's not a valid option. I know that some ROMs do it, but they risk legal action, and they only get away with it because of their limited visibility. ROMs like CM or AOKP would probably get in trouble in no time. As a matter of fact in the early days of CM these apps were included by default and the developer received a cease and desist because of it. And that's when GApps zips started appearing.
To avoid waiting for the flashed GApps to update, you could look around for bundles created by other people. Not just the ones that can be found on http://goo.im/gapps. For example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2012857
You can just take your existing gapps zip, pull the updated versions from your phone, rename and replace in the zip
You could also, if you wanted to, merge both the ROM zip and Gapps zip together.
Ive never had an issue with that but, of course, YMMV...

Yup. I take the normal Gapps package, replace with updated apps and GMS and add the other Gapps I use such as Earth.
I then have another Gapps zip with the other apps such as G+ etc that I dont use that often but can quickly flash if need be.
Gapps zips are quite versatile. As long as you use the original package which contains all the framework for them to run and other bits n bobs, you can chop and change what you want.
I replace Gmail and PhoneSky with inverted versions etc
how difficult is it to update, most people now run unlimited data packages or can connect to 99% of wifi available, pubs clubs shops just hang near and connect. close freinds and family contribute monthly to my broadband and i allow them to connect during the day and hammer overnight to bypass limit caps etc.

I'm curious, why install google keyboard? Isn't it similar enough, feature wise, to the AOSP keyboard? In fact, aren't they the same? I think the google keyboard is for those stock devices that only have the manufacturers custom keyboard installed. You already have it installed on CM11, maybe that's why you're getting an error.

I don't think aosp and google kb are exactly the same.
plus, if it's showing as an update thru play and the error is coming, then not getting the newest fixes&features.
I would check to see that you don't have some version of it being installed by gapps being used or something. one that is themed maybe or customized will usually contain a different signature than the official one.
also, after you delete it and/or uninstall, reboot device before trying to install thru play.

Hey guys, id like to install the Google Keyboard because it has new features that i really like. It doesn not show as an update to the CM11 AOSP keyboard, it is a separete app.
Also restarting after uninstalling/moving the CM11 keyboard's .apk did not help
Any other suggestions on how to get the google apk installed?
