Does anyone have experience with permissions and/or firewall apps? Such as LBE Privacy Guard, PDroid, and Droidwall?
PDroid looks promising but has to be built specifically for each rom and does not work with ICS yet. LBE seems to have a firewall built in so I have no clue if Droidwall would be necessary to run along side it.
Do these apps kill battery life or cause lag?
I decided to try out LBE and Droidwall. Droidwall seems to work good and is very easy, LBE is pretty easy as well but has some more complicated features in the privacy options.
After checking Watchdog it seems like Droidwall doesn't continuously run whereas LBE does, with cpu usage jumping to 5% every few seconds.
I guess I'll stick with Droidwall for now. Does anyone else have anything to add this that I may have overlooked?

So ever since i did the OTA 2.2 it keeps running more apps in the background. I have my ATK set up "Crazy" and shut apps down when screen is off. But i cant keep it above 180ish. Is there something im missing??
Yeah, task managers don't work in Froyo! Lol! Little known fact. Basically, the Android team got tired of the abuse of task killers and made them defunct. They'll stop processes, but they just restart. You never needed one, and with Froyo, it has better memory management and other things that completely negate any benefit task killers might have brought. To stop a malfunctioning app, use the built in task manager. Settings>Applications>Manage Applications and go to the running apps tab. Select the app you want to manage and hit Force Stop.

Wish it would just fully stop. Well Im gonna do it (root) when someine has it available for 2.2
I uses taj killers and noticed some slowing now that I have gotten rid of the task killer I have had better battery life and better speeds. Just let Android manage your apps and quit closing apps that don't need to be closed. Closing an app through a task killer will do some damage just like you should not force close an app on a computer unless it locks up on you.

you can run a task preventer (I like "autostarts") to keep those apps from even starting in the first place.
Also if you want to have the system kill tasks more aggressively you can scale up the lowmemkiller. You can do this manually by echoing whatever values you want to the lowmemkiller file (more on that if you want to know) or there are apps that will do it for you. I don't know which on the market will do it, I run damagecontrol and DConfig has a lowmemkiller adjustment
I don't know very well in deep Android os, I'm wondering if the apps that automatic close unused process can help the phone and the battery or only damage the normal kernel work.
NO. Don't use auto task killers. Please.
If you MUST know whats running, use something like WatchDog, which lets you keep an eye on wary tasks, but doesn't kill anything unless you specifically say so. Although you can do this manually with the built-in Android one, WatchDog gives you extra tools to use.
Task Killers have been horribly misused and not at all required since Android 2.2.
Nay on task killer. Android does pretty well on it's own.

Auto killer isn't a task killer. It tweaks android's default values for killing tasks.
This is the only "task killer" I would say doesn't hurt the system itself.

Check the dev options in settings. You can adjust some of the settings there.

Yes. Let's go "optimizing" the system by killing tasks and tweaking system thresholds without any metrics what so ever, besides saying "it feels smoother" (after a full reboot with no new apps loaded, but lets not mention that. it sounds less awesome).
That sounds all so very scientific and I am all for it.

Umm...there are a number of programs in the Market that can show you cache hits and page faults, etc. It's not that hard to get some measurements for what effects these tweaks are having.
Dont use your phone....oh wait..

Hi all.....elsewhere on this forum is a thread concerning high capacity replacement batteries and whether they "really do what's printed on the tin"....so I thought I'd look at this from a different angle......
How can we extend the life of the 'stock' battery?
Does anybody have any tried and tested tips to share?.......
We all know how to do the usual....things like adjusting screen brightness and turning off wifi when it's not needed.......
It's fair to say that the majority of users on this forum will be rooted and/or have custom ROMs installed. Are there any system tweaks that unrooted phones don't allow? Are task killer apps any use at all? Is playing with the CPU speeds beneficial, or potentially more trouble than it's worth?.......
Let's see if we can make this thread a "one stop shop" for anything power saving related.......
I'll start.....though these tips will probably have only a marginal effect at best.....
1) I use Gemini app manager to view all my Installed apps to (1) see which apps are running and (2) freeze the running apps that I don't need.....less CPU usage = more power.....
2) I use LBE privacy guard to view the permissions that my apps require....if they require access to the internet via 3G or WIFI, and I see no reason for it, I'll use LBE to deny the permission.....less data sent and received = more power....
3) going back to Gemini App Manager, I look at the apps I DO need, and configure their "autorun" status. If I don't want/need them to start up at boot, I'll prevent them from doing so....they're still available to me, but they remain inactive until I need them....fewer running processes = more power......
(Lol....just realised I said "more power" 3 times.......
Jeremy Clarkson would be proud)

I'm trying to improve the performance, battery life, and stability of my phone. A few days ago, I found out about Android Tweaker 2. I use the auto tweaker and tasker profile features and am wondering if they would conflict with Greenify if I were to install it.
My auto tweaker is set to balance performance with battery life, and to only use safe tweaks. My tasker profile is set to hard (aggressive RAM management values) with persistence on boot. Note that "tasker profile" here has nothing to do with the Tasker automation app. By "tasker profile," Android Tweaker means multitasking profile.
I have not changed anything in the system tweaker, OTA tweaker, app manager, smart actions, or multitasking sections.
Would this setup conflict with Greenify, or would I probably be okay using both? I'd like to try Greenify so that I can increase my battery life. Thank you.
Well, I went ahead and did it (installed Greenify and set it up) and as far as I can tell my phone is working fine. It's much less laggy, and so far Greenify has cut my battery usage in half. That's with heavy usage too- a lot of screen on time tweaking things.
Between Android Tweaker, Greenify, Nova Launcher (more lightweight than Trebuchet), zipaligned apps, smartassv2, 1.3GHz overclock, some Xposed modules, uninstallation of unused system apps and custom ROM apps, and better use of widgets and quick settings, I think I may have made my phone far less frustrating than it use to be. Time will tell, but I may actually be able to enjoy it now. Maybe I don't need new phone after all.
I wouldn't think so. Greenifys sole purpose is to minimize background data use of apps when in idle. I've ran both exposed and android tweaker 2 which is the new version and didn't see any issues until android tweaker 2 started force closing with certain tweaks but with bit still being in the beta stage that's normal for a few issues. Only issues u may probably have will be in exposed itself cuz the sources have only been tested on 4.2 ROMs even tho they will work on any jellybean ROM. Hope this was of some help to you and if so feel free to hit the thanks button
Is there any mods that are worth running on the mini (19195) like pure performances for better battery, etc?

XPrivacy, AFWall+, and AdAway will make your battery last longer. Using this list to remove autostarting junk you don't use should make your phone boot faster.
Undervolting your core will reduce battery consumption. Overclocking will increase performance. But you'll need to have a kernel that supports
For performance/battery, nothing beat a clean custom ROM and kernel.
Software that will actually affect battery would be Greenify and JuiceDefender (or similar app).
XPrivacy is like a HIPS for Android, very good for security, but I think it a overkill to have another Firewall such as AFWall+ along with XPrivacy. Since XPrivacy can stop an app from internet access completely, I don't see much reason of control individual IP/port.

AFWall+ is the way to go if you want some apps to use WiFi but not mobile data, or if you want apps to go online at home but not burn up expensive data when you're roaming across the ocean. XPrivacy can't do that.

Ah, gotcha. Nice to know. But it subjective whether that 'helps' improve battery.
