Hi,
I want to access a samba share in my home network. I have a lan-storage device (dlink dns323, static ip 192.168.XX.XX) connected to a wlan-router.
When I activate my wlan on the xda orbit, I'm able to open web-pages and download gps-data for quick gps. Xda orbit is getting its ip via dhcp. As dns I defined the wlan-router.
So how can I access the share "folder1" at the dns323?
I tried this in totalcommander:
\\[email protected]\folder1
--> Error 53 while connection!
Similar in File Explorer:
\\[email protected]\folder1
--> Network ressource was not found or you do not have access rights.
From a desktop pc or laptop inside my home network I can connect to the share as user1. Without the [email protected] statement --> same result.
Can anyone help me?
Kind regards, hqqh
Hi,
now I installed z2 PocketLan. When I scan my network, my NAS (DNS323), wlan router and my linux server were found. But when I try to connect using group name user name and password the error message: "Network path not found." is printed. This happen when I try to connect to the NAS and the linux server (smb server is running).
I'm happy about any help.
Kind regards,
hqqh
fwiw I could only get network sharing to work when i addressed it via name ie.
\\device\sharename rather than \\ipaddress\sharename.
Hi,
thank you for your hint. I tried to connect vi Internet Explorer by device name:
"\\DLINK-EE2EBC\folder1"
But when I press ENTER, the address is substituted by "file://\\DLINK-EE2EBC\folder1" and the error "Network path not found" appears.
How can I configure my device, so that it will access the LAN and not local files?
Kind regards,
hqqh
Do you have the (Start -> Settings -> Connections ->) Network Plugin installed and configured?
I've exactly the same problem, i have an Artemis P3300 and already tried everything. Also configuring the network plugin. But the plugin won't connect to my lanbox...
When i refresh the Networkneigbourhood, my lanbos can be found, but i can't tap on it (i can by my other computers in the neigbourhood). Maybe it is a problem with the firmware of my lanbox? But under WM5 everything was accesable.

when i enter a \\network\share link in IE, it gets redirected to file explorer and a blank IE window says open with file://\\device\share in the address bar. Have you tried file explorer or total commander?
also i have no settings set on the network plugin page, isnt that for sharing out your wm?
Hi,
@chiel80: You mean it is an WM6 problem? Do you know whether it is possible to update the operating system without affecting the installed software?
@mc1: Yes it tried totalcommander and file explorer. The network plugin shows the same behavior like chiel80's device. All network devices were found, but no shared folder is available. Same in the tool called pocketlan.
I dont know what I can do. Is there anyone how can access shared folders via network?
Kind regards,

Hello,
I have the same Problem. I have tryed with PocketLAN, Resco-File-Explorer, HTC Network Plugin and Total Comander and it cames the same Problem. With Windows-Sharefolder its worked very fine. But I have Problems with my NAS-Server (Buffalo Linkstation) and my DreamBox, boths are Linux-Devices. Before I flashed my HTC Kaiser, its worked with my NAS. But after I flashed my Kaiser then the Problems has beginn. I think its a Windows Mobil 6-Problem. What can I do?
WM6 Firewall?
Hi,
I still have the problem, that I can't connect to samba shares via WLAN. I as said above, I can send pings to my linux server and I can send pings from the server to the xda orbit.
I noticed that if I connect to the samba share from e.g. another linux or windows pc, a log file is created under /var/log/samba on the server. But when I try to connect with the xda orbit, no log file will be created.
So is it possible that WM6 has a firewall, which blocks the samba ports (137-139 I think)?
I have done a port scan of the xda orbit an got the following result:

I know, if the communication was started from the xda orbit, the samba ports dont have to be open, but if the firewall has a very restrictive setup, the commuication will not be start? Just an idea.
So my question: Is there a firewall in Windows Mobile 6? If yes, how can I configure it?
Kind regards,
hqqh
Any progresses here? Struggling with the same problem here.
Hi johnpatcher,
No, there is no progress on this topic at my side ((.
Do you have this connection problem when you try to connect to a share on a linux or a windows system?
Maybe there are differences in the implementation of the samba protocol between linux and windows.
Kind regards,
hqqh
I'm trying to connect to a samba (linux) share.
It doesnt work neither with "security = user" nor with "security = share". I just get a sound, but it doesn't connect. No entries in the server log files can be found .
Hi,
I setup a connection to a winXp computer where a folder was declared as shared folder and I was able to connect to it!!!
So what is the problem? Do I have the wrong settings of the samba-server?
The ip address of my XDA Orbit is added to the list of devices which have access to the share.
Has someone established a connection between a WM6 device and a linux system?
Kind regards,
hqqh
Hi
I have the same problem on my HTC touch cruise with WM6
Using TotalCommander LAN-plugin, I get connection to all the shared folders
in the LAN, but when I want to connect to a LAN-storage, located on a USB-server (running smb-protocol) I get the storages name, but no folders or files on it.
With my elder HP Ipaq 6910 running WM5 all works perfect.
I think there must be a setting (in WM6 or HTC) that prevents WM6 from connecting to a SMB-server?
Is there anybody who can connect with WM6 to a LAN-(smb)-storage?
Thanks
Stefan
I have the same issue. My ATT-Tilt-WM6 with HTC network plugin shows all available pcs, but will only connect to actual windows machines. I've got shared Linux samba drives, and shared ibook hosted samba drives, which show up in network plugin, but it can't connect to. All pcs/ibooks/linux boxes in network can connect to each other just fine. And my other phone, a sprint 6700 with WM5, shares the ibook and linux drives just fine, I'm only having the problem with WM6.
Network access to NAS using Lobster Tunes
If you just want access to audio files? I have managed to get access to my audio files on my NAS device (Synology DS107) using Lobster Tunes.

There *is* a fix for browsing Linux (samba)-based shares and it involves editing a line in smb.conf on the Linux server.
BUT
I found the fix in a very obscure forum on the Internet a long time ago AND I no longer have the link!! I did fix this problem on my old Linux server but it's not currently fired up so I will have to dig it out of storage and see what I did.
This is bugging me now as I need to 'fix' my new server!
Hi!
I was struggling this issue with Kaiser. And solution came with new ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=395555
Unfortunately, I can't figure out why and what is difference, but if I install any other ROM (e.g. Dutty's), I can't access samba shares. If I install the one above, I can access using TC, Resco, File Explorer and maybe others.
Hope this helps someone.
PS: I have Synology DS-207+ on the network.
OK. The correct answer is here:
Change HKLM\Comm\SecurityProviders\NTLM\LmCompatibilityLe vel to 1 from 3, not to 2 (ref: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa922895.aspx and http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa925018.aspx) as "You can also set the LmCompatibilityLevelServer value to 2 or to 3. Both of these specify that the server will only use NTLM v2. Authentication will fail if the client is not capable of NTLM v2 protocol. For more information, see Authentication Services Registry Settings".
And check to make sure HKLM\Comm\Redir\SmbSignatureMode is set to 0 (not recommended 'cos it may cause problems with windows servers), 1 or 2, but not 3 (ref: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa921092.aspx).
And you can try to set HKLM\Comm\Redir\AllowedAuthMethods to 3 to see if it makes any difference. To me, 2 works fine.
No need to modify samba configurations if you are running a recent version of samba (3.0.28 right now). Anyway, you can always try to add "use spnego = no" (maybe "client use spnego = no" or "spnego = no" as stated and/or quoted in other posts/web pages, I'm not sure of it.) to see if it makes any difference in your situation/samba version.
Anybody able to tell me how to use the SMB module with Astro? I cannot find anywhere in the application to connect to my computer. I've looked through the documentation too, with no luck. I've got both Astro and the SMB module installed.
I've emailed the developers, but no response yet.
Thanks for any help.

Thanks! I had seen that screen, but when I clicked on the WiFi symbol (thinking it would create a new share connection), all it does is take you to WiFi settings. Of course, I wasn't smart enough to click on the "New" button.

It would be wonderful to have a few screen shots and a bit of discussion on how to actually get this running.
I tried what I thought would work and the system hung in a wait loop.

means your phone can't connect to the computer, have you verified that it works on a pc?
-edit- make sure your wifi is turned on
WiFi is on, and I can ping the EVO from the PC.
I've confirmed that the shared folder can be seen from another PC.
I am wondering if invalid payload size is a clue?
Are there any Windows 7 issues I should be aware of?
It could be a permissions issue. In the screenshots I provided, I'm using an admin share. What do the permissions look like on your shared folder?
bah, i have the same error, i can ping np, i can access my shares from any other comp in home, but get payload error on the phone.

Same error for me: payload 405
Using a windows 7 box and an admin share. Finds the ip addy of the pc using only the hostname, but it most be getting a bad response from the PC.
Anybody find a solution?
Too add the windows box shares the directory with 2 xbox's in the house and shares the printer with 4 laptops...
same error for me "Invalid payload size: 405" !!
Please fix this. I have checked my share is working properly and on a second PC. As well as works on ES File explorer but i dont like that app.
EDIT: phone - HTC Desire, 2.1-update1
I have a smb server running on my Ubuntu 10.04 box. I got it up and running after finding the advanced settings. On my captivate, when in the smb setup dialog pressing the phones menu button brings up an advanced settings tab. You get two options, key and value. I set key to "Workgroup", and value to my workgroup. Back in the previous settings dialog i have only filled in Label, Server (used IP address), User Name, and Password. Works like a charm now. Hope this helps
I wanted to connect to my SMB shares on my Mac running Snow Leopard OS X, and while other PCs could see the windows shares just fine, on my Android phone with the Astro SMB module I kept getting Invalid payload size: 254. To solve the problem, while in the connection profile editor, I pushed Menu and chose Advanced. Then I created a new property and key:
jcifs.smb.client.useExtendedSecurity = false
Once I added this, I was able to connect to all of my Mac samba shares just fine!

Thanks bro, that fixed my prob i was having, i now have another problem, When trying to view files on the network say example a photo i get the following "file type jpg not found" the same goes for any other file i get "file type ***** not found" any idea how to fix that?
I have a STRATO HiDrive (which basically is an online harddisk that supports several protocols such as SMB, SFTP, WebDAV etc). I tried connecting to the drive (cifs.hidrive.strato.com) using my username and password, but to no avail:
UnknownHostException: cifs.hidrive.strato.com
It works fine using my computer, though. I also tried switching off extended security as you described earlier, but that didn't work either.
Another program, FileExpert, connects just fine but is really slow and hangs while reading the share's folders.
So I tried SFTP, which connects but then returns a "StringOutOfBoundsException". Dunno if they're related, I'm basically trying to solve the SMB problem.
Any clues?
I not find Astro smb module on market.
Anybody have the apk?
Thansk.

You deserve the biggest man-hug that has ever been squeezed!
Could some kind person point me in the direction of how to use CIF's (on DJ Droid 1.4, presume it's the same for every rom) along with Windows 7 to share a media folder?
I've (obviously wrongly), shared the folder in Windows, put in the network path, username and password and local path in the CIF's manager but it always fails to mount.
Many thanks.
I've worked it out now, in case anyone is interested, do not use the windows network name, instead do this:
Right click folder in Windows, select properties/sharing then click "Advanced Sharing", check "Share this folder" click ok.
Add the share in the CIFs manager with the windows box IP address and the folder, e.g.
192.168.1.2/Media
Use your windows username and password.
Job done.

Can someone explain how I would use this to access music on my home computer - I have a dns service so that I can remotely access the computer - using the built in htc music player, or is this not possible?
From what I understand, I simply share the folder (samba) in windows but how do I point my phone at that directory?

Bump Would love this
Note: This will only work on your home Wifi network. If you want to make use of files from your home PC over 3G, you might want to use a VPN.
You'll need a rooted device and a custom kernel that allows CIFS. All AOSP ROMs use CIFS enabled kernels, but if you use a Sense ROM then you may need to install a newer kernel to get this to work (see the "all things Desire" thread in the "Desire Android Development" subforum for kernel options).
Install CifsManager from the market. Find the file 'cifs.ko' on your phone and make sure that the 'path to cifs.ko' in the CifsManager settings points to it.
You'll need to know:
- Your PC's IP address (i.e. 192.168.0.10)
- The name of the share you've created (i.e. Media)
- The name of the Windows user allowed to access the share (i.e. smeddy)
- The password of the Windows user allowed to access the share (i.e. 53cr3t)
In CifsManager, press menu, 'Add new share' and enter the above details. Press on the line in CifsManager with the red dot on the right. The dot should turn green. From now on, to use files from your PC on your phone, just open CifsManager and tap the share to connect.
You should now be able to access the files from the share on your PC as if they were located in /mnt/cifs/<share name> (if you have S-OFF) or /sdcard/mnt/cifs/<share name> (if you haven't).
I was thinking that a folder in the phone can be added as a share and accessed as a shared folder from a Windows 7 PC (the reverse of that mentioned here) using CIFs manager. Can this be done? If so can someone post detailed steps please?
No, as far as I know, that doesn't work yet.
What you'd need for that is an Android port of Samba. Some people over in the Android Software Development forums are discussing that, but I don't think it's working (yet). Edit: Apparently it is. See this thread for more information.
There are several FTPd's for Android in the market, though. That could do much the same thing.
@Cuchulainx
WOW! Thanks man. I was having trouble getting this to work. Couldn't seem to make a connection to my PC shares. Now with your help it works superb.
I can open word documents and excel spreadsheets on my phone from my computer and edit them with Quickoffice. Awesome.
Can also wirelessly transfer files from PC to phone. Cool.
Cheers mate. Clever boy!
great!!want to have a try, but don't know how to start~~
is there any way to get cifsmanager work with windows 7 which doesn't have a password? i get "I/O error" all the time.
First, I didn't know if this should go in development or general since most of the people who are going to be on Ubuntu will be devs, but hopefully this will be useful for everyone.
Honeycomb changed a lot of things. Most of the changes are awesome (as we know) but some of them have made certain things frustrating. Honeycomb marked the move from USB Mass Storage to MTP (media transfer protocol). Although for Windows users it actually works pretty well, for Linux users it doesn't...at least at first.
If anyone has hooked up their Xoom to a Ubuntu box then they know at first nothing happens. There is no selection on the tab to "mount" USB Mass Storage because it is not supported (which I thought Honeycomb was supposed to support both so this may change) It's like the computer doesn't even recognize anything is plugged in.
So this was very frustrating but I have put together a solution. Previously I was using a GUI interface called gMTP to connect to the Xoom and transfer files. This was an ok solution and it worked but I would still rather just use it in Nautilus like every other drive I use. Ok so starting here I will just post the commands and then explain after so no code gets lost.
Start with installing a needed program for all of this to work
Code:
sudo apt-get install mtpfs
Next we will create the device rules, so Ubuntu recognizes it as a USB device.
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules
NOTE: Some of you may have already added the Vendor ID. If you don't this file will start off blank and then you need to add this next line. If it does not come up blank, then make sure you have a line with Vendor ID 22b8 and 18d1 (for bootloader which uses a different VendorId) and you are all set.
Code:
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="22b8", MODE="0666"
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="18d1", MODE="0666"
You might need to start a new terminal for this change to take effect for adb and bootloader access.
make the mount point and take ownership:
Code:
sudo mkdir /media/xoom
sudo chown user:user /media/xoom
NOTE: "user" in the above code is literally your user name for your box.
ANOTHER NOTE: if you stopped here you could mount by typing mtpfs /media/xoom -o allow_other and unmount by typing fusermount -u /media/xoom...but that's no fun
add the mount point to your fstab:
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/fstab
In the first unused line available you might want to type a comment like:
Code:
# mount point for moto xoom
then add this line after it:
Code:
mtpfs /media/xoom fuse user,noauto,allow_other 0 0
Next modify fuse.conf to allow_other:
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/fuse.conf
uncomment the last line which should read:
Code:
#user_allow_other
uncomment this line by removing the '#' symbol.
add your user to the fuse group:
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/group
a long file will open, press CTRL+F to bring up the find dialog and type
Code:
fuse
close the dialog and fuse should be selected and visible.
At the end of that line with no space add your user name.
Save that file. Close it.
Lastly reboot your computer.
Now when your computer restarts, if you look at your "Places" menu you will see a Drive marked with 'xoom'
Plug in your xoom, and click on xoom in Places.
Nautilus should open with all your files that you have on your device. It will also place a mounted drive icon on your desktop. If you would like to unmount, right click on that icon and click unmount.
As you can see this was a pain for me, but hopefully this solution will work for everybody. I know the instructions are really long but follow it and you will feel old school mounting your storage in your file browser.
NOTE: THIS WAS TESTED ON UBUNTU 10.10 ONLY, IF THIS WORKS FOR ANYONE ELSE PLEASE POST YOUR FINDINGS.
Also, I am fairly new to Linux actually, so if there is an easier way to mount the storage in nautilus let me know. This works for me and I just want to help out so please no flames.
Couple things I have also noticed with MTP, when you have the internal storage "mounted" you still actually have access to the files on the device. Plus the file transfer is a lot faster. Usually I had been getting about 4 Mb/s and now I get about 15. Of course this speed difference from what I am used to might be the internal storage vs. SDCard transfer rate diffs.
Last thing, is this might need to modified when the sdcard access comes since there is only one mount point specified.
not trying the artificial bump.
I guess no comments on 228 views means this is working?
Can someone chime'in if this worked for them so I can know'if it works'as is or needs to be tweaked.
Thanks
I got mount up and running last night. Works like a champ. Great work. I was tired of pushing and FTP.
Thanks for the reply. Glad it worked for you too. One thing I need to add tonight to it is the fact that the xoom uses a different vendor'id when it's in the bootloader. The one vendor id if used alone will not recognize the xoom to use fastboot but ill update it when I get home.
FWIW, the "mtpfs" package in 10.04 was broken when using the Xoom, and causing segfaults. I found the source and rebuilt that and now it's working OK.

So, I'm on 10.04 and not getting segfaults, but after pugging in (xoom is in usb debug mode) and click on xoom in places, ubuntu gives me the error "could not open location file:///media/xoom. Error stating file '/media/xoom': Permission denied"

Most excellent guide!! Thanks you for taking the time to figure this out. I'm on 10.10 so I have nothing else to add.
Works flawless on Ubuntu 10.10 running on an older Mac Pro
Thank you for posting the easy to follow guide.
This is semi-working for me in that I can successfully mount and browse the device, but there are a few problems. One, it locks up Nautilus for 30-60 seconds (grayed out and unresponsive) though it does come back. Two, file transfer speeds are very poor.
I'm trying to load two movies totaling 1 GB right now and the copy dialog says 2hrs 56 min to transfer w/ a speed of 99.7 kb / sec. This is unreliable, however, as the copy dialog is frozen on those metrics.
Build is AMD64, distro is 10.10 upgraded from 10.4.
I appreciate the effort to document this, in spite of my issues. Let me know if anyone has suggestions for a fix and I'll try them.
One day later and this solution is now working for me. The Xoom filesystem behaves oddly in Nautilus, with some files not appearing that have in fact been transferred to the device, but otherwise this is the best solution I've found.

I find it odd that Android dosn't play nicely with *nix.. considering they are cousins in the OS family. That it works sooo well with Windows instead offensive IMO

I've seen the same thing. Usually an unmount then mount will clear it up.
this did not work for me. i'm getting no application is registered as handling this file
i told nautilus to open it and its saying /media/xoom is not a folder
Using this guide I'm able to mount fine, but I'm seeing a couple issues:
I have my music organized like this:
Artist
-----Artist - Album
----------Music files
When I copy over the top 'Artist' directory to the Xoom's Music folder it works, but, all of the music files have been directly placed in the Xoom's Music folder and the Artist and Artist - Album folders are empty, seems pretty weird?
EDIT: It looks like the Xoom (or MTP?) forces all music files into the root of the Music directory. Even if I try copying the artist folder to the root of the device the mp3 files end up in the Music folder.
EDIT take 2: Nevermind...the Android docs say nested directories are supported for music, and Windows preserves the directory structures fine.
I'm totally unable to copy over movies. I've transcoded a file into mp4 and it seems to copy over but, once the copy is finished the file doesn't show up on the Xoom.
EDIT bonanza: Looks like I'm also able to copy over movies fine through windows...so I guess all my problems are Linux related.
I keep gettting a "Transport endpoint is not connected" error when I try this. I am using 10.04 64-bit. Does anyone know how to resolve this?
Challenge / Background:
I recently rooted my Sprint HTC 10 to Viper v10 3.5.0 with SuperUser v2.74-2. This was my second root and I had a couple hiccups along the way that required me to re-flash during the process to make sure I did it right....ended up being something different. Everything works though as expected with the exception that I noticed tonight that my Windows 7 laptop does not recognize my phone. After multiple tries trying to update drivers on my laptop (can see it in device manager, but error) and that type of thing, I gave up and tried to work the problem from my phone. But, the only solution I could find online was regarding ensuring that the USB tethering option was on. Additionally, when booted to TWRP v3.0.2-6 I also was unable to mount my phone as a USB storage device.
Temporary work around:
I will still be looking for a permanent solution, and if anyone has ideas please let me know, but if others have this problem, an option that worked for me was utilizing "USB Tethering" in lieu of "(USB) File Transfers". In order to do this, I downloaded the below app from Google Play and followed the instructions. Its a little slow moving from folder to folder, but works as a temporary solution for the moment, or until I try to reflash again in case I mistakenly selected the wrong option in Viper.
I utilized the MTP-Alternative USB Drive application by ClearEvo located in the store for free.
Hope this helps.
