Hi Arc Users,
Do you guys encounter low memory after long period of usage? It seems like the memory does not free up after using the phone for a long time. I mainly use the phone for FB, Camera and messaging.
When the phone hits like 50+MB ram or so it starts to slow down and if it goes lower than 40MB my home screen starts to lag and the app icons take a few secs to load every time i return to home screen. I'll usually reboot the phone but its quite a pain considering the boot timing for my phone is rather long, like close to 1 min.
What are the possible solutions? I've heard that advanced task killers are unnecessary for Gingerbread. If thats the case, how do I free up more memory or have better memory management for the Arc?
Am a first time android user, appreciate any advice from you guys

Root is the solution. Delete apps and services which you do not use.
I haven't any problem either when free ram goes down to 30MB and i don't use a taskiller.
Just what are you doing when you run out of ram? Never did I run out of ram yet. Running ram hungry games will free up more what is needed as I experienced. When I return to homescreen, it takes a while (around 2 secs) because it will free up ram from the game, then load the homescreen launcher from start/scratch.
Same here but my Arc works fine, even with 30-40MB RAM, so it isn't a real problem.
But it would be nice from SE to make 400-450MB of the 512MB RAM available for the user.

What? That is a completely pointless excercise if you understand how ram is handled by the os.
You need to root and remove bloat, check ya settings etc to get better performance. I found letting things constantly access the network was a juice eater, I don't want fb to check every 4 seconds, I update it when I want to read it lol
I use a task manager, but only because I like to see what is running and using resources. I rarely actually kill any apps, just occasionally a few things I rarely use. Even then it fills the space with other stuff.

I do not play games with my Arc. I just used facebook, MSN, Camera and messaging occasionally throughout the day. Medium usage.
It runs smoothly for several days but maybe after a week or two, the RAM starts to get low.

Try a cache cleaner also will free up some space for ya

I use battery guard as a task killer. It comes with a widget where you can see the available amount of ram.
I'm happy about it. Though a lot of people say a task killer doesn't help I have no negative experience using this one... and I never go below 130 ram.
I still think it does help to close tasks that otherwise keep running in the background... But I'm new on android so I could be wrong.

maybe this can help w/o having to install apps or task-killers. Should work on Xperia Arc but I don't guarantee it.
That script seems to do basically the same thing as auto memory manager.. (per my previous post..)..

That depends.... have you checked your running programs to see what's running?
This is normal and good. Free memory in itself is well just a waste.
As long there is free memory which isn't needed otherwise the kernel will try to hold already used things (loaded data, loaded apps) in memory so that they are faster available (which also means less battery use) when needed again. When a process needs memory it can drop some of this cached data.
So instead of having a lot of free memory all the time it tries to make always good use of the 2 GB.

Im a ram clearing addict I cant help myself when I see alot of ram is being used I have to hit that clear ram button. I have heared that ram in android works differently to windows and that by having programs ready in the ram its supposed to keep things running more quickly. But I find games and just the general phone feels faster when more ram is free. It must be my imagination ;-/

The more ram you get, the more the programs are using the RAM. It is normal. When you use a task killer program to kill those tasks, you will release the RAM back.
However, if you find out there are not much free RAM after you kill the tasks, then, it would be a memory leak.
Hi all. After flashing TrueAncestor 1.6 LE, I had about 330-340 total available ram (free + used by running apps). This was a long time ago, but still is like this if I reflash it.
The issue is on my running apps tab it shows only about 240 mb total available RAM! When I restore the backup, that is. I don't really know how or when it happened. Maybe it's due to installed apps, but I can't really find out how is that possible.
Edit: I found out via advanced restore that the problem lies in the data backup, but I can't figure it out.

Try run sme RAM killer app, like GTA Vicecity ... then exit game a check free RAM ...
BTW - on my Xperia S (1GB RAM) i have frree only 250MB and no problem at all..
ram. it's not that i have a problem, it's that 100 mb of ram somehow disappeared. i flashed another rom and i'm doing an app-by-app restore with titanium backup to avoid restoring whatever caused me that issue...
It is because of the app, also maybe the kernel n the rom u used, i used turbo kernerl jb+ jellyzeus rom, superb fast, no lag at all, smooth when play games, although i got 100mb out of 377mb,

Check the CosmicDan's sig "free ram is wasted ram" when apps will need ram they will just free it by themselves. I'm having max 180-140 ram in daily use which isn't much and everything works fine. Either way 330 mb of free ram - WTF? Yeah it's caused by apps. Many apps are running in the background or just idling. It may be that rom itself does something which will eat some ram to make itself smooth and then free it up when needed.

mmh... seems like i've not explained the problem well enough. I know free ram is wasted ram. I'm talking about the total ram. By total available ram I mean free ram + ram used by processes you can see in the "running apps" tab. The 330+ mb of *total* ram is what one should have with this phone. I had only 236 mb. I did a reflashing restoring app by app, and now I have like 300-310 mb of total ram. That's still kinda disappointing since I don't know how is that. Out of the 512 mb installed, system processes which are unseen by the "running apps" tab in settings take some, and that's okay, but to have 236 mb total means there was some other invisible process that was either disguising itself as a system process or letting the phone believe it only had that much total ram.
You should used custom rom n kernel, some stock rom isnt that great,

there are many users with stock rom and kernel which get 360+ mb of total ram, your answer is not helping that much. Also because i'm not using stock rom lol.
No, i mean sometimes u need to flash stockrom to get corect baseband n then install the rom, it just to avoid any prob after,

well, i found out that it doesn't depend on the rom anyway. When I link the phone to the pc and the sd unmounts, it all gets right, the total ram is what it should be, but just for the first moments, then the total ram is cut down by a lot but i think it's normal. When i take the phone out it regains all the ram, but when the sd mounts again, something like 40 mb of ram disappear just like that.
sorry for double posting, but I realized other things:
actually, the ram programs like setcpu and quadrant is the correct 367 mb.
Unmounting the sd card eliminates the problem as long as the sd remains unmounted; mounting immediately brings it back. Messing with dalvik vm heapsize does nothing, engine flushing with supercharger does almost nothing. I absolutely don't know what to do. Even my older screenshots from when I didn't flash anything has like 330-335 mb total ram, instead of the 345-355 it should be. Now it's about 305-310. More than 55 mb are not reported by running apps and this affects gaming, as ram heavy games like 9th dawn, everland crash and aralon + gamekeyboard can't stay in background together if the graphics options in aralon are maxed out.
If it still persist u should try uses swapper. Great way increasing ram,

I am too facing this issue, after booting I have like 340 mb of total RAM(100MB in use and 240mb free) but after using phone for quite a while the total ram decreases a lot(110mb free and 100mb) in use, where is rest of the ram?? how to recover it?
U just cannot recover the ram. U should better try the new rom. Try atomic gb rom. It fastest and stable. And u should not get to furious about ram. Just see the phone lagging or not.

Well, i have 380 total ram. Flash turbokernel 3.1 and then any JB rom and then you should have the same amount of ram that i do.

I've searched all the webpages, but i couldn't find an answer, so i'll try it here!
So the problem is on my Sony Xperia S with stock rom 4.0.4.
On the Sony Xperia S, you have 1 GB ram, but 400 mb is prereserved for android, so you have 600 mb for user usage.
The strange thing is that there still is some hidden ram usage, because if you look at the screenshot, you'll see that the apps you can close in the task manager don't include the whole 600 mb, but only around 400 ~ 300 mb. I wanna know where that is used for, because 300 mb isn't much for user usage ..

Alright, and there's no way to stop those services?
And how long wil it take before the update arives? Because this ram issue is really affecting the way of playing games or just doing some normal web searching.. :crying:
It's normal.. I mean: everybody on Stock ROM has same usage. However, you said 300MB is not too much.. But it's not like on PCs: On Android every MB RAM free it's wasted MB. Android is managing RAM automatically, killing processes etc. in background to give another application more RAM (That's why more and more ppl argue about using task killers, which are useless in 4.0+)

That much free ram is normal. If you want more free ram, firstly don't use task killers. Secondly go to settings--->apps and force stop any apps that you have installed like Facebook etc which run in the background. If you force stop an app, it can never start on its own unless it is a system app. Thirdly, I don't know if you are rooted but if you have superuser access then just debloat your rom by deleting unnecessary apks like Music Unlimited and all other crap. If you don't know how to do all this then the best would be to just flash a custom rom as all custom roms will provide much better performance than stock.
300 - 400 Mb free ram is enough to play games... Android frees up more ram itself if its needed.

I've noticed on my e975 EU version even with 0-1 apps open the ram free is only 1gb... Other phones have far more ram available including my previous nexus 4. Anyone else notice this? I often find with quite a few apps open I only have 2-300mb free
I've never seen less than 500mb free but its true. Never more than 1gb.
I checked earlier with 0 apps running it was at almost 1gb used.. what on earth is using almost 1gb!? If phones with only 1gb can use less than that on jelly bean.. why does this phone use so much?
According to ram usage i am using approx 400mb, task manager says im using 800mb. Maybe 400mb is reserved for system? This is on stock rom with only a few apps installed.
Keep in mind free ram is wasted ram. Free ram is like having a fast car and only using first gear. Still curious to know where it all ram is used nontheless.

I get what your saying with 'Free ram is wasted ram' but when you run out of ram.... things will start to stutter.
Having a few apps open to find you only have like 300mb left is insane.
I've had phones with only 1gb ram before and with lots of apps open they are using like 700mb/1000mb... it's almost like this phone is going 'Oh I have 2gb available so i'm just going to chomp up 1gb for the sake of it and leave you with 1gb left....'
If you're root use an app called "Greenify". Simply hibernate the apps that don't use adding to the list of the app, then add the widget to hibernate the app that you added (all except whatsapp, twitter in my case). In addition I use a tasker manager (don't added to greenify) and add a widget too, that combination gave me 1,2 gb free using a lot of widgets
Im stock un-rooted.
I only have 2 widgets on my home screens, 1 is the standard world clock and the other is play music. Tried removing both and it barely made a dent...

That's weird, only 900 mb free?? Mmmm, try using advanced task manager from the play store (I don't remember if root is needed), that will free you more memory. But in the 900 doesn't mean that the phone will be heavier, backward the used ram is exploited to make the Optimus lighter

I also have 600 - 700 MB of RAM when I do not use anything.
There are just icons on my homepage, and a calendar widget (stock one).
At this case, It gives me 600-700 MB of free RAM. I always use "clear RAM" button. But why it gives us so limited free ram?
I used to use 4X HD with 1GB of RAM. There were 350-400 MB free which almost same with this optimus g?
Can someone explain this situation?

As said above, phones with only 1gb available use about 3-500mb... Our phone with 2gb available seems to use about 900mb-1gb with nothing running. It's like it's gone 'Oh there's twice as much free so I'll just use twice as much...'
What about the AOSP custom Roms ...is the ram usage is same on that kind of Roms too?

My nexus 4 was far better at ram usage than my optimus g mind you. No matter what it never used more than 1.2gb
I think the Lg UI(stock firmware) is a memory hungry ...i suggest to try AOSP roms with lg skin :thumbup:

Using cm10.1 and have always about 1.4gb free, and this is more than enough for everything.
Y, stock rom have a crazy high ram usage, now im on PA and got 1.2gb free.
My doubt would be if, on stock rom, you get many slowdowns when you experience this high RAM usage. For me (who doesn't still have a LGOG, but is seriously thinking of buying one), it's the thing that matters most - if the lack of free RAM results in worse usage.
Otherwise, most efforts could do more harm than good - a task killer that kills an app which will restart seconds later is wasting RAM and battery instead of saving them.
I'd give priority to greenifying unruly apps you need often and freezing apps you rarely/never need but won't/can't uninstall (with Titanium Backup, or any other app that can freeze system apps) - always making sure you're not freezing some system app that will bring your phone to its knees. With this well configured, I'd say a task killer would only bennefit those of you that rarely use your phone. Everyone who often takes it out of their pocket and updates Facebook/Twitter or plays games should let Android take care of itself, as it will keep in memory the apps you've been using the most - as it should.
Don't use task killer apps, they aren't good for Android. Maybe something like a LMK Manager but you need root to change lmk.

M$ Windows does the same thing - if you have 2GB it uses only the half, if you have 8GB is use nearly 3,5-4GB. I think it preloads a few things including the most common used apps in memory perhaps?
