[Q] Google Wallet rooted? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I'm going to be getting a Galaxy Nexus GSM soon, and I want to root it. I really want Google Wallet though. Will Google Wallet function on a rooted Galaxy Nexus? Thanks
PS: This is the straight from Google Galaxy Nexus that does come with functioning Google Wallet.

you're welcome. the only thing that doesn't work with root is google movies and maybe some DRM-related movies. netflix + root works fine tho.

The only difference that you'll notice is wallet will show a banner that says "not supported" or something along those lines.
This literally doesn't change anything, though.
It's just there to warn you that if your cards are stolen...it's not their fault.

That's quite alright. I'm totally inside Apple's ecosystem right now, but I use Requiem to strip their DRM anyway. (No piracy of course) I prefer to have full access to the things I purchased. Part of why I'm going from iOS to Android. Rooting provides more access than jailbreaking does.

LOL I'm only going to use the prepaid Google credit anyway. If it's not reloadable then I'll take the risk with my real cards. Next up on my list of things to do is figure out how to get call recording working.
Thanks again guys

Well rooting and custom ROMs are two different thing. But yes, "rooting" does more than jailbreaking (but rooting is the gateway to custom ROMs) Android is definitely more open than iOS. Good luck with the transition and hope that the Galaxy Nexus will give you a good first impression at Android

Thanks. I actually have gone back and forth a few times. iPhone 3GS > Original Motorola Droid (iDon't commercial lured me) > iPhone 4 (FaceTime lured me) > Skyrocket (Sky ICS ROM) > iPhone 4S (Siri lured me) > Galaxy Nexus (should be here wednesday. Wallet lured me + I want call recording back)
If I won the lottery I'd probably pick up a Windows Mobile 7 phone too to check it out.

I tried Google Wallet with my rooted Galaxy Nexus (GSM) at Rite Aid. It worked before I rooted it, but now the PayPass machine does not work anymore. I do get the warning about "unsupported device," but unlocking with my passcode seems to work. Is anyone else having the same issue? I really don't want to unroot my phone just to use Google Wallet.
I tried OTA RootKeeper to "hide root," but that doesn't seem to help.

My phone has been unlocked/rooted since the day I got it and I use google wallet at least once daily. Root is not the problem. More likely it's either the person working the register or the pad itself that is the problem.

Interestingly, it was the exact same person working at the exact same register where I got my Google Wallet working before rooting and failing today. She even remembered me from my last transaction and wondered why it did not work this time. I don't need to re-install Google Wallet once I've rooted the phone, do I?
[EDIT] I reset Google Wallet and tried again, both the root hidden and restored using OTA RootKeeper. It worked! Resetting my account must have done that. The cashier (another person this time) asked if I had a "Nexus" phone. Sure felt good.

I rooted as soon as I activated the phone. Wallet has always worked for me. Then again I only used it twice so far. Long Island isn't a tech savvy region and I can't eat at McDonald's every day just to use Wallet

My experience with Google Ears and Wallet on Bell

Hi guys,
I want to share how I tested Ears (Music Search widget) and Wallet on the Nexus phone I recently purchased directly from Google.
I live in Montreal Canada and use Bell Canada as service provider. Today I went to Bestbuy in Plattsburgh and purchased a T-Mobile SIM card with a one month 30$ prepaid unlimited data plan. I'm going next week to United States for a week vacation and I wanted to have unlimited data available on the road.
My phone is stock, not rooted or CWM installed. The idea was to see if Wallet and any other hidden apps will stay functional when I revert back to Bell SIM card. I use a VPN at home so I have access to all US services (Play Music, etc.) Google offers. After initial JB update done on Bell with VPN enabled for Wi-Fi, the Wallet was hidden and even if Music Search was listed into installed apps, it did not showed into widgets list.
Once the guy at Bestbuy activated my SIM card, I rebooted the phone and voila, Wallet and Ears popped as available. I also noticed another hidden app, Play Magazines. There is nothing fancy about it, it links to magazine subscriptions offered in Google Play.
With T-Mobile SIM card on, I configured Wallet and link it to my Google Apps account, everything worked properly:

}
I also tested the Music Search widget, everything worked properly.
Next, I shut down the phone and switched the SIM card to Bell. When I tried to open Wallet, I was greeted by this message:
However, the Music Search widget continued to work properly while on Bell network:
At least I got Ears working properly, without the rebooting issue others mentioned (the app will lock itself). BTW, no idea why people are referring to "unfreeze/freeze app", there is no such thing in Package Manager commands:
Code:
pm enable PACKAGE_OR_COMPONENT
pm disable PACKAGE_OR_COMPONENT
In conclusion, it sucks to be a Canuck and own a Nexus. Wallet is so awesome and we are prohibited to use it. I was reading on another Canadian mobile site that the usual "mobile" suspects (Bell, Rogers, Telus, etc.) plan create the "Mobile Wallet" app... a poor attempt to emulate Google Wallet in Canada. It will probably have a crazy ugly interface, remember the Visa one that looked like it was coded by a 5 years old kid. Anything they can do to stop users take advantage to a cool product like Google Wallet and get rich by pocketing the fees Google would otherwise.
Man I wish Google wallet was working in Canada would make things so much easier.

Wallet fails to add money using my Canadian credit card that has a US billing address. Another "V" for canucks. :victory:
I'll buy a sandwich at McDonald's with the $10 I have not, just for kicks. Not sure I can afford a combo, heh.
Wish they would enable wallet over here in the UK, but I bet the carriers was to implement some solution of their own as always.
As far as freeze/unfreeze, that's what titanium backup called disabling applications before it could be done natively, seems the names stuck.

Just wanted to share my experience with Google Ears.
I flashed yakju 4.0.2 a way back (it came with yakjuxw). 4.0.4 came via OTA and I manually flashed JB (the 4.1.1 version). The phone is only unlocked and rooted. I'm in Croatia and I've never had an issue with Google Ears. I put the widget on my screen the first day I found it and the app never froze after a reboot. Curious, huh?

Not sure what "natively" is referring to but let me see if I can expand on this comment.
Many apps come installed as part of the phone. These are called system apps. What you install are called user apps. When you go to uninstall apps, you can only remove user apps.
If you root you phone, you can take advantage of an app like Titanium Backup. One of many great function is that you can freeze or even uninstall system apps with it. It is recommended that you freeze the app first before permanently removing it. Freezing an app make is invisible to the phone, even though the files are still there. Unfreezing the app just makes it visible again.
So, you can freeze Wallet and it won't bug you, and then you can unfreeze it next time you go on vacation to USA.
There is not a lot of use for Wallet in the US at the moment, at least not with NFC. As to your $30 unlimited data plan, you realize your 4G is capped, right?

How does "freezing" or "defrosting" work? How does Titanium do it? What property does it change in the app so that it is frozen or defrosted? I would like to be able to do this without Titanium.

You can use adb to issue the commands OP wrote in the first post: "pm enable /system/app/GoogleEars.apk"
I think that's the syntax.
Maybe some script at boot with a kernel that supports init.d folder I assume.
Cheers!

Is there any way to get Google Ears to work in Finland? :/ somehow titanium ROM Toolbox cannot find the google music widget app so I can't unfreeze it and also Google Music Player doesn't show music information sometimes.. :/
even by using DroidVPN I can't install or update Google Ears via Google Play..

Yes, that is what I used to do on my Galaxy S2. I always used a terminal as is much easier to control and see what is going on, on your phone.

You could also install a recent .apk, it will make the Wallet show. Then, revert the update to previous version and Wallet will remain visible. It will not work though, you will see the error popup message I posted into OP.

No I don't have, maybe the Google Ears app was unusable because I couldn't be able to install it again, so I searched the app from google and I found it then I installed it and it works now..
I used DroidVPN to update Google Music and I deforst the google apps then I installed them again from /system/app/ but I think some of those files will be gone again when I reboot my Galaxy Nexus because once them was on my phone 2 or 3 days but then suddenly them was gone I rebooted my Nexus many times then and I installed the google apps from system/apps so I din't defrost them with any app..

Just to let you know, Music Search works properly for me even if I reboot the phone on Bell network.
There is something weird though. When I find the song, if I click on the widget it will try to open the Play Store app then move to Chrome browser instead. Does anyone else has the same issue?

OK.. have you selected sometimes "every time" when it's asking that with what app you want to open the link? I don't have that issue so I don't really know how to fix it..
Delete Chrome and then install it again maybe then it's fixed..

Thought I'd spread the word. All credit goes to Paul on this! Amazing work!
Google Wallet is super cool. It allows purchasing of things using the NFC chip in your device at Mastercard PayPass terminals, using either an inbuilt pre-paid card (which is loaded up with $10 free credit initially) or a CitiBank Citi Mastercard. But, there is a problem - and that's that Wallet is only available for a very limited subset of devices on a limited number of operators in the US.
Hence the need to patch the APK.
Now, i'll start by saying that there may well be a patched APK out there already (I didn't check), I chose to patch the APK myself because, when i'm putting in my credit card numbers etc. I like to know what i'm working with. I started with the latest version I downloaded personally from the Google Play Store (by spoofing my operator with 'Market Access') which I then patched as required.
The patched APK
The APK has 3 features that I patched out. The first was a device check - the app will now work on any device. Of course you need to have NFC for it to be useful! I tested on a HTC One X successfully (as you can see in the screenshots above) but of course YMMV. The second patch was an operator check - the app should now not care which operator you are on. The third patch was removing the root warning. Google Wallet doesn't actually stop you using the app if you're rooted, it just gives you a warning on screen (which is a little annoying), so I removed it. BUT... rather than having the warning in app, let me post it here instead. If you are using Google Wallet on a rooted device, really think about which apps you are giving root access... because there is the possibility that a malicious app could do bad things. There's no evidence of this happening, but it's possible. As always, be wary of what you're installing and where it came from.
Installation
The APK cannot be installed in the regular way (because it is not re-signed and therefore has broken signatures), instead you should push the apk to /system/app (or copy there using a file explorer and set appropriate permissions) and then you'll be good to go. This means you'll need to be rooted or at least have a custom recovery installed mind. To uninstall, use the 'reset wallet' option in the settings menu then delete the APK.
Important note re: upgrading
If you are using a previous version of Wallet, please ensure you the 'reset wallet' option in the Wallet app settings.
Download
Download the patched APK here - DOWNLOAD (ROMraid) - MD5: 775946c9b164d2dd1edc1a36e59e41a3
Topping Up
So you've installed the APK and spent your initial $10 at Greggs or maybe Mcdonalds. Healthy. Now you need to top up... there's a problem!
Google Wallet only allows you to load the prepaid card using a US card, which most of us accessing Wallet this way don't have! The card that you use needs to support AVS (address verification) with a US address, something that also excludes a number of US cards. I'm hoping that we as a community can collaborate to work out the best way to do this, but i've tried a few methods and i've chronicled them below. I'll update this post as more methods / information surfaces. I'm hoping we can find a low cost disposable Visa solution or similar that makes the process easy. Getting a US address is easy enough to associate with a card, just sign up (free) for US Unlocked.
BFPS - Virtual credit card in various denominations, configurable AVS address, use coupon 'modaco' for 5% discount - WORKING
EntroPay - Virtual credit card, turns out to be Malta registered and doesn't support AVS - FAILED
US Unlocked card - Virtual credit card, currently untested - UNKNOWN
The 1.5 release
The 1.5 release added support for third party Visa / Mastercard / Discover / Amex cards. This is officially US only at the moment and although you CAN get non-US cards appearing correctly, in my experience so far, payments are always declined.
Disclaimer
If you use any of the above modified APKs or top up methods, you do so at your own risk! Please let us know how you get on in the comments below, so we can refine / improve the process based on our experiences.
WARNING
If you plan to wipe your device, switch ROM on your device or otherwise do anything unusual (including 'clearing data' on wallet), it is highly recommended that you use the 'reset wallet' option in the Wallet app settings. Failure to do this could render Wallet inoperable on your device!
Another note of caution, we're using a 'hack' here, so it's probably not the best idea to load up your Prepaid card with a ton of money in case Google blocks hacked wallets, something changes, etc. etc. and you could lose your money. Again, use at your own risk.
And finally...
If you find the above useful and you want to support my work on this and all the other MoDaCo projects, please consider signing up for a premium MoDaCo account. Thanks!

Thanks for posting this. Unfortunately, connecting my account is not working for me. The install works fine and I can open the app but then it gets stuck when I try to link my google account. On the "Select an Account" screen I select my account and press "continue" which triggers the "adding account" waiting pop-up but nothing happens. It's most likely $10 per account not per device so you would probably have to link the app on each phone to a separate account in order to do that.

That sounds like the secure element was messed up due to clearing data or falshing a rom without reseting wallet. I beleive there is a fix floating around for that.

Oh, sorry then. I'm wondering if anyone can answer this: I tried to give GW it's first test today and it failed. I have NFC enabled in settings and I've set up my account. I have a FlyGrip attached to the rear of my phone, an accessory that allows me to hold this big phone with one hand and reach all areas of the screen with my thumb. I'm wondering if it failed because I cant touch my phone flush with the PayPass reader? For this same reason I cannot do the wireless charging hack the rear of the phone needs to be flush with the charging pad. So, can it be less than an inch away or does it need to touch? Maybe that FlyGrip has got to go.

Updates:
R151-v8: Now reports device as Nexus 4.
R151-v8-update: Big changes! New install process. For some reason adding loyalty cards with the camera would not work as a system app. So I had to re-sign the apk with my own private key, that way it can be installed as a user app. But because of the new signature, it had to be added to nfcee_access.xml so make sure you update that as well!
.
Issues:
R151-v8: Adding loyalty cards causes a FC. To get around this you can install the stock app, add the loyalty cards and then install this modified version.
Install the udpate
Downloads:

Issues:
R151-v8: Adding loyalty cards causes a FC. To get around this you can install the stock app, add the loyalty cards and then install this modified version.
Above^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ issue is solved by doing the New install Method!!!!
AFTER DOING THE STEPS ABOVE, THEN REBOOT BACK INTO RECOVERY, FLASH THE NFC FIX FILE. REBOOT SET UP WALLET APP AND ENJOY PAYING WITH YOUR PHONE!!!!!
Just noticed that Google Wallet was updated TODAY and I decided to try it on this 4.3 ROM. Found in the play store HERE
With the new MOD for Google wallet. Located above in the OP!!!
You can now flash the new NFC fix that @loserskater made:thumbup:.
That will give you they option for TAP and PAY feature...

Did it work at the store using nfc? Cause they said it won't. Read the link.
It's also worth noting that according to AllThingsD, this new Google Wallet app will be made available to AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon customers. Wallet is currently only supported by Sprint and a handful of smaller U.S. operators, something that's likely held back Wallet's adoption rate. Unfortunately, it's said that AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon subscribers will not be able to use Google Wallet to make in-store payments using NFC.

To me, "it works" means NFC payment, on AT&T network.

I've had Wallet NFC transactions working for a while on Skynote(I'm on ATT), and see now in the Play store that I'm being given the option to update, where previously I had the black bar saying my device isn't compatible. I'm tempted to update, but I don't want to break my being able to use NFC.

HTC Backup Notification

This is starting to annoy the hell out of me, every time I downloaded an app it gives me this notification (as in the screenshot) in settings I've unselected back up my data and automatic restore and the notification still shows, I've selected do not show again and it still pops up anytime I downloaded or update an app, how can I get rid of this.
Not unlocked or rooted yet as I've not got a PC/Laptop and haven't had time to do it.

I haven't tried it myself, but did you try running the app itself, and selecting OFF for Automatic Backup?
EDIT: Oops, just realized that may be what you meant in your original post. There is a notification setting in the APPS settings as well - but it is grayed out, and the app can't be disabled there either.
Thankfully I'm not the only one, hopefully I'll be able to get to an Internet cafe this weekend and unlock bootloader, root, s-off, etc and sort this out, seriously annoying though , also annoying why you have to have a PC or laptop to unlock and root, surely in this day and age with more people using tablets you should be able to do all this on an Android tablet not really a fan of laptops but have having to go to Internet cafe for hours just to unlock bootloader root etc.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
Just realized under Settings, Backup, there is an option to select either HTC Backup or Google Backup. Every time I turned off the HTC Backup and switch to the Google Backup (which is turned on), the HTC Backup turns back on again. Think this could be why the HTC Backup notification keeps appearing.
Maybe turning off both Google Backup and HTC Backup will remove the annoying notification for now..?
Did you turn "Automatic backup" off in HTC Backup app.

You can't do a lot of the necessary work on an Android Tablet, don't you have a PC and/or Laptop and Internet at home? You can get Windows Tablets (full Windows, not RT), and those will work as well.

Bizarrely enough I finally got round to unlock the bootloader today which took longer than expected actually and downloaded loads of my apps again and this notification now appears to be gone.
Gonna flash TWRP and root next.

Titanium backup > HTC backup > FREEZE
Problem gone!
I stopped getting the pesky HTC Backup notification after I turned it off in Settings.
Like I said previously, I noticed that whenever you turn it off, and switch to Google Backup, the HTC Backup seems to turn on by itself again. So I turned off the HTC Backup, and did NOT switch to Google Backup thereafter. The HTC Backup notification then stopped appearing again.
I don't ever get that it jus updates in the background

[Q] How to disable Samsung OTA?

If you'd like to disable Samsung OTAs on your Verizon Note 7, you need Package Disabler Pro version 6.4 or earlier.
You can download version 6.3 from this link: https://onedrive.live.com/?authkey=!AIfDkz0V-XIn4XE&id=E344C7F7F1FE86C3!1923&cid=E344C7F7F1FE86C3
But, you must first purchase the license from the Play Store.
Once you have version 6.4 or earlier up and runnng, disable the following packages.

Not really the point of this thread, but obviously the more information Samsung can find out about these fires, the more information we as consumers have to make a good decision on how to proceed. The Samsung engineers have been unable to replicate these fires in the labs so far, and if you ask me, that's a good sign in telling how low of a chance these phones have of actually catching fire.
Samsung will keep investigating until it has found the root cause. When it does, this thing busts wide open. We'll know exactly how safe the Galaxy Note 7 really is, and a relaunch is even possible.
BUT, I don't want to get into a whole thing about what Samsung may or may not find in it's investigation on this thread. This thread is solely about disabling Samsung OTAs so keeping the phone in a working condition and with max battery life is possible.

I think it is just the two system updates. That is all I ever disabled and I never got an OTA pushed to me. In fact when I go to settings to see if there is an update available, settings force closes. Unless they try to force an update via another way those two should be the only ones needing disabling.

Anyone knows what should I do?
Also I have the GearVR, and have not connected it to my handset after they push down the patch to disable the use with Note7.
Anyone knows which process to disable too, so that I can continue using the GearVR?

Don't you worry about using Gear VR. Its "fixed" by Oclulus. As soon as you'll connect it with VR, it will force you to update. And when you do, your Note 7 will be useless for Gear VR. I recommend freezing anything that says VR in package disabler, except for Gear VR service and see.
BTW, I am in search for apks associated with Gear VR. Specifically, Oculus home, Oculus Appmanager , Oculus system activities and most importantly, Oculus VR drivers. I was never able to use Gear VR because my phone arrived after the Oculus ban. Therefore, I couldn't driver anything from Oculus and I don't have the VR drivers and I can't find them. on internet I know i can't use Oculus for my VR needs, but if I have the drivers, I would like to use the Buttons and Touchpad for 3rd party VR apps such as Cardboard.
If you're able to upload those OLD (read non toxic) APKs I mentioned, it will be greatly appreciated...
Bump.
Apparently, if you've already downloaded the OTA, you can still stop it from being installed by disabling the four packages in the OP.
Unfortunately, if you've installed the OTA... it might be a lost cause.

Someone please answer this guy because I'm exactly the same. I blocked those two but the notification for the update is still there. If I force close "system updates" all then it goes away for a second... But comes right back.
I just spent a lot of money ordering a new screen as my first recall phone seemed to crack about 3 times very easily. But replaced it myself and it is just like new. Just need to freeze and block any updates until a phone comes out that is acceptable on Verizon.
I'll also note that the internal battery of this phone has a date on it that is pre-first-recall. I suspect Samsung never actually changed the battery of these phones and simply updated it with a green battery icon.
Please assist.
Bump.
Ummmm, well, I'm a newb again apparently... I haven't rooted a phone since my SGS3, and thought it couldn't be too hard...
Yeah, I should have done more reading...
I'm pretty sure I bricked it... Can't access Verizon software repair tool either, as it has apparently been shut down since yesterday.
If anyone has any advice on how I can repair this, even if I have to do the new downdate...
Please help!
I'll check back tomorrow after my EGR Thermo exam...

You have to find a older version of package disabler version 6.3 should have additional options you can check to disable. If the update is already downloaded you can get rid of the update notification for at least for 24hrs by doing long pressing the notification and un check everything then a combination of force stop then clearing cache and selecting manage storage.

i bought both package disabler pro's n still couldnt find com.sec.android.soagent or com.samsung.sdm, my system update is ready to install and im wondering how to get rid of the notification or update all together
It's rather easy to fix this. Most of you have purchased a disabler app, either package disabler pro or ez disabler from the Play store, therefore you have a valid license but downloaded the gimped recently updated version from the play store. Search Google or xda to find a safe apk of the previous release of the disabler apk. Uninstall version downloaded from the play store and install old version (turn off auto updates in Play store before installing apk). Voila, you have a non-gimped disabler app and are now able to see those missing packages.
