Struggling to get past (or even to) 3 hours screen time. - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi all,
As title I am struggling to get to even three hours screen time in my average day. The screen on use is generally web browsing (hsdpa), forums, Facebook etc so no intense gaming.
Have checked bbs and cpuspy and no strange drain present (screen off drain is actually excellent.)
Having seen some of the screen on times achievable I wondered why I am unable to get the same. I have tried lowering auto brightness values dramatically, underclocking and golfing CPU and gpu, different roms and kernels and have still yet to break the elusive 3 hour barrier.
I suppose my main question is whether some batteries are plain bad, or whether some screens simply consume more power than others.
If anyone has any insight, or other things I could try to boost my battery, it would be very much appreciated.

Go in to settings > battery and see what's eating your CPU
My phone is at full brightness, and I am 14 hours on battery with tons of screen on time (3g on, no wifi, some browsing, app downloads, playing draw something) and my battery is at 45%

perhaps a tablet with a sim card will help with your battery woes, and maybe eye sight in the future

Two identical phones with massively different battery usage. What's going on?

A friend and I both have a desire, updated to the latest version of Android and running 5.09 radio. Neither of us use it extensively and I can get easily through the day on a charge, mostly having upwards of 30% battery charge left when I go to bed, while his can barely do 8 hours before needing a recharge.
He's already taken it to the store to have it looked at once and it came back performing the same.
I've been looking at his currentwidget log and the consumption seems fine to me, however the battery drain is much larger than I'd expect in return.
http://pastebin.com/0Crvm1xR
Anyone have any idea what's going on? Please help!
Are you two using same ROMs..??
I'm rooted, he's not, but I'm using basically the same thing. My battery usage hasn't changed, while upgrading from 2.1 to 2.2, his hasn't either. But his has been crap from the beginning.
Swap phones for a few days. Perhaps he's in an area where by reception is poor compared to you. The phone would use more power trying to get a better signal?
Sent using XDA App
Does he play games all the time? Does he use GPS, Bluetooth, WLAN? And you?
how does it perform in airplane mode?
Install Android System Info and take a look at the task list, CPU load should hover around 10-20% after a few seconds. If it's higher find the task and report back.
He said if he just leaves it on the shelf with sync disabled, no calls and no notifications, it gets 12 hours tops. I get 48 like that.
Does he use Live Wallpaper? I found out that if I use a plain picture instead of live wallpaper, the power drain is much lower.
Has anyone even looked at the currentwidget log?

Yep, and you're losing battery very fast in what looks to be an idle phone. Every few minutes the power drain is shooting up for a period and then fluctuating to higher than it should be in idle (between 7-70mA drain in idle means the phone isn't idle). Many services and widgets that are known as power hungry seem to be running too. Due to the logging limitations, I can't see if they are the ones causing power fluctuations or otherwise.
I mean, have you done any one hour experimentation with cell on vs. cell off to see the battery loss differences?
What about cell off, display off for an hour vs. cell on, display on for an hour - what are the percentage drops in both cases for the device?

Can't really test like that, since he lives 150kms away. I'll see if he can lend the phone to me for a few days and I'll run both in an as identical manner as I can.
If people like andycted and bemymonkey have much spare time to reply, that would help you much since I consider them more expert in this area (they know far more than me).

[Q] Battery testing

I've read in a bunch of other threads that people are getting awesome battery life out of their Z or G2. Mine is okay-ish. I had a hero before which seemed a bit better. there are a couple of odd things I thought I'd check tho...
First, the keyboard backlight turns on and off at seemingly random intervals while open. Anyone else got this?
Also I've seen screenshots of the battery use screen showing how much power is used by each system. The screen always is at least 75% on mine, even when its been sat in a pouch most of the time with just a couple of messages or a phone call- this seems quite different to other peoples experience.
Is there any reliable way of benchmarking the battery to check? If not, does anyone fancy helping me test?
im actually suffering from the same problem,
i thaught it was because the first week i was using it lots thats why the battery wasnt lasting long, but on monday morning with a full charge ,
only with a few calls , texts and checking train times on TFL , by the time i got to sleep that night the battery was on 30%
I was shocked , checked the battery useage meter , everything was below 5% except the screen which was was on a shocking 80%
I Then formatted the phone , restored to default , removed everything ,
set the brightness to lowest useable which was just above the 'o' on 'ok' in the brightness screen let it charge to 100% for use on tuesday.
Tuesday - Morn before i left for work it was on 100% , the only thing i had setup on it was email, brightness on low - but useable .
Screen must have been on onliy for 20 mins throughout the day
Got home , battery was on 45%
battery useage - again display was taking over 70% of it when it was hardly on .
I am RMA'ing this one tommorow
I think its an issue internally with something shorting on the display, battery shoudlnt be draining that much if its not on
Out of interest was yours a UK Desire Z ?
Yep. This sounds exactly like my situation in every detail. I couldn't believe reports from other people saying their batteries were at 92% after 12 hours- even without using mine at all this wouldn't happen.
Mine is a UK desire z, from play.com. I think its over 14 days so RMA might be tricky, although I know I have lots of rights thanks to distance selling regulations. Hope I can exchange without too much fuss.
Ooh, just thought of something. When I set the brightness really low on mine (below 20% or so) the screen flickers slightly. It's most visible on a totally white page. Does yours do the same? Faulty backlight maybe?

Just tested mine, definitely no flicker.
Now my experience with the battery....
I play about half hour - an hour of games every day, plus about up to an hour wifi, using the xda app throughout the day using data, 10 - 15 txts and a few 1 - 2 min calls... Not too heavy usage.
I'm getting 30-36 hours, I'm happy....
BUT..... I have not plugged in through mains once yet. I read that charging through USB gives better performance... so far that is looking true.
I got the same kind of time out of my Hero using mains but that was with zero game time.
yes! pizza65 , i noticed the flickering too! , i thaught it was just my eye being twitchy ! Noticeable on internet browsing on low brightness! .
Mine was from handtec .. (amazon delayed too much) so changed last min,
it comes with a 2 year manufacturer waranty i think so even if you take it up with HTC direct they should be able to help if play dont.
I tried a diff radio and rom , but it made no difference.
Maybe the UK batch is still faulty , wasnt that the reason why it failed google testing and got delayed for release here?
Whats your hinge like ?
ddot what network are you on ?
same to you pizza65?
im on 02 , i dont think it is a network radio issue with switching of hspda/3g to 2g signals as it does say cell standby battery useage is around only 6% , but then again the phone could be false reporting

Not really if you want realistic real-world results with data connectivity etc. It varies too much since everything counts like signal strength.
You can always just turn off everything and burn the battery with a movie but first thing you should do is a few dozen full discharges before you do anything. I've noticed that HTC (and other manufacturers too) pre-use their batteries ie. charge and recharge them until they're optimal for consumers, hence the whine about bad batteries when people buy new phones (and in reviews as well).
I'm on Orange, I don't think its network because, as you confirmed, the "battery use" screen says that the screen is draining all the power. If nobody else gets a flicker on low brightness (it can take a few seconds to see it, but once you notice it...) then it looks like our screens are the culprit. Maybe.
I've deleted batterystats.bin and fully charged, so ill give that another chance before talking to play.
Ddot, what percentage of the drain is from the screen on your z? Also, if you press 'display' in that menu it will say how long the screen has been on, what does it say?
I have the same issue with battery performace. I've moved to Desire Z from my old Desire which had AMOLED display. On my old one, the display taked 5-8% of battery. On Desire Z I have minimum 50%, but ussually ~70%.
After reading that some people can use their DZs like "for two days of heavy use (gaming, browsing)" or "5% for 6 hours" I can't understand how?
Comparing to old Desire my DZ have poor battery performance. But the specs tells it must be much better.
I'll publish my battery usage stats after some days. Maybe it'll be useful.

I have stock Sense ROM with root and S-Off. No overclocking kernel. My SetCPU profile is set for 245 MHz when screen is off.

And a really "geek" method here quoted from cyanogenmod issue:

Now, I was still having abnormal drain on my battery. As suggested in the Wiki and also confirmed in another cyanogenmod post, clearing the battery stats can help. I followed this procedure:
Fully charge the battery, says Full and 100% under Settings - About phone - Status.
Reboot into recovery, wiped battery stats. Phone still plugged in at this point.
Reboot into rom, checked to make sure battery was still Full and 100%.
Unplugged phone.
Killed it, used Maps on Wifi and messing around. Killed it in about 3 hours or so.
Tried turning it on a couple times to make sure it was *dead* dead. It still tried to boot, but couldn't complete without shutting off.
Plugged phone in, booted it up. It may be better to not turn it on until it is fully charged, but this is just what I did.
Let it charge overnight, next morning took it off charger since it was full.
I have noticed pretty good battery life since doing this. This morning on my bus ride in I pretty much constantly played some Storm8 games and used Listen with Bluetooth, was only down to about 82 or 84%, can't remember. This is on par with previous CM release for me.
Not sure why this rom in particular had so much worse battery drain out of the gate, and not just for me. Fortunately it seems correctable. Maybe if a few of you could give this a try and see if it improves your battery performance we could conclusively say battery calibration is the solution.

What about the flicker? Can anyone confirm that?
I have a UK (read: QWERTY) Desire Z, first batch.
I tried reprodocuing the flicker by lowering the brightness completely and looking at a blank white page in the internet browser. Couldn't see it. Maybe I wasn't looking hard enough.
That said, I'm not getting the great battery life that most seem to be getting, and the stats always show the Display as being the number one drain. HOWEVER, it doesn't seem quite as bad as you guys are saying.
Right now, it looks like this:
Unplugged for 18 hours and 16 minutes, battery at 36%
Display accounts for 41% of the drain
It has been on for 50 minutes.
(stock ROM, running an IM client 24/7, synced to three email addresses... Typoclock seems to use 2% of the battery every time as well, which seems relatively high for such an innocuous little widget)
Yeah. I have some slight flickering too, slight when low light set.
Uk stock.
I dont think high display percent is an issue too much reading cyanogen issue comments.if you use nothing but low cpu burden apps, display should eat most.
Also if i have it off, power is eaten by cell standby.
Im still hoping for a settled battery log mentioned in forums.
My 2 cents:
If I "use" the phone, I have to plugin it every night.
If I do not "use" it (nobody calls that day, no browsing or GPS (Just work!)), I plugin it every two day (ex. mon - wed - fri).
The display is always 65-80 % of the "drain problem".
Today the stats are:
7.30 am: full chargerd 100%
7.30 pm: display drains: 70% in 1h : 21m - battery at 20%
I leave automatic background gmail sync on (only daylight, I use the "Flight mode" overnight)
No bluetooth, no wifi, no gps, brightness 35-40%

No phone either.
I'm on a North American Desire Z and I see the display using 70%-80% of the battery when I have the display on for approximately two hours out of the day. I keep my display quite dim too, at 20% brightness.
I'm also running everything stock. No root, no custom ROMs, no anything.
Isnt display percentage actually the display driver cpu time eaten?its just a theoretical value isnt it, not watts gone? It seems obvious that its eating a lot as it refreshes all the time regardless of display light level.
My screen on is only 33% today, im sure its usually higher though. Maybe its due to me flashing stuff all day. Ill do a full charge tonight and report back Sunday.

better battery life

I've been using CyanogenMOD 7 and love it (mostly). The one thing I don’t like about it is the short battery life. I'm kind of new to rooting phones so it took me a bit to get it rooted and get CM7 rolling. I was wondering if there are any mods out there like CM7 that have better battery life? Or if there's any thing I can add to CM7 to give it more batter life?
I've been using android since the first phone came out so I’m already knowledgeable in what to turn off to try and extend the battery life, but I have noticed a big decrees in batter since installing CM7.
Thanks for the help guys

your phone automatically underclocks your processor when it sleeps (for most CPU governors), you do not need to tell it to do so.
I'm not picking on you fyi, I'm just making sure we are giving people accurate information... there's only one thing worse than no information: incorrect/incomplete information.
op: which version of CM7 are you running? remember, the more minimal your setup (ie less homescreens, less widgets, manual syncing of gmail and whatever else, etc) the better your battery life will be. this is especially true of newer phones that are getting heftier cpu & gpus that, while intelligent with power consumption, are going to drain even larger capacity batteries relatively quick with moderate/heavy usage.
how long are we talking with battery life? how heavy a user are you? for reference, I get around 16 hours of battery life if I don't charge the phone at all from unplugging to battery dying with moderate to heavy usage (texting ~50 times a day, sometimes up to 100 emails depending on what's happening at work, couple hours of calls, couple hours of streaming music [pandora or audiogalaxy], couple of hours of games [peggle and plants v zombies mostly - both of which are resource hogs], etc).
I have just learned to get used to the fact that the phone is going to die if I use it a lot, so I've purchased three micro-usb cables and a car charger.. that way, unless I'm in an area where there is no charge-capable usb port nearby, I'm always able to get a little more juice if need be.

but i also mean setting the max sleep to 368mhz. by default its set at 800mhz. sometimes with apps running in the background, the processor may go to 800mhz without you knowing
check out 'powersave' and set your cpu max to 806mhz. should last you a nice long time like that. responsiveness suffers, of course.
'ondemand' and 806mhz is the best comprimise for me. still fine with HDvideo recording, streaming audio, Nav, etc
if you really want to make it last... clock down to 400mhz, turn off all the sync, set brightness and timeout to minimum, all the radios off (airplane mode), and the volume down, on vibrate.

But some govenors don't drop the sleep to the lowest profile. In fact almost all keep it above the lowest clock. Other kernels allow it and you can also use third party to set it lower. When the tweaKr script becomes universal it will be even better =)

It suffers in powersave because it stays at the lowest setting only. No reason to set to 806. Lol and that bottom comment is hella funny =), but if he does that his phone will just be...a waste of pocket space.
Your best bet is to do some research on kernels. If you are using cm7 to cm 7.0.3 id recommened pyros kernel. If you are on 7.1 or a nightly over 121 I believe id go with eugene's streamline5. It did wonders for mine Also there is a battery saving tips. Google G2 battery saving tips. Should be first link that comes up.

Mugen 3600mah = better battery life...
Can you elaborate on what kind of battery life you are getting now? How many hours, and for what level of usage?
How long have you been on CM? It takes a couple charge cycles of the battery after flash any ROM, for the battery meter to be accurate. Clear battery stats (as mentioned) then charge to 100%, let drain to about 20%, repeat a couple times. Don't drain until the phone dies. Some people say to do this, and its not good advice. Over discharge of Li ion batteries can cause them to no longer take a charge. There are people on here, on the Vision and other phones, that let their battery drain to empty, then the phone would no longer boot, forcing them to replace the battery.

Tips to extend battery life with ICS

All,
In case you haven't noticed, the battery life of the Nitro HD is kinda bad... Then, when you add ICS into the mix, it gets worse.
When i first flashed the Leaked ICS ROM, I noticed that I was only getting about 8 to 9 hours of battery life with very light use. So, I endeavored to find a way to extend that time without buying an expensive extended battery.
Here are my findings:
GPS
Settings > Location Services
Now we all like the convenience of being able to pull out our phone and find the nearest gas station or fine dining experience. But when you think about it, in our day to day lives, we don't need directions that much.
GPS and Location Services are huge data and energy hogs. If you have ever seen how much can go on in the background when it comes to Location Services, you would cringe. So, set up your GPS like the screenshot below and you will see a little battery life improvement and data usage go down.
Display Brightness
Settings > Display > Brightness
On my Nitro, the display uses up the most energy by far. So, it only makes sense to lower the brightness a bit to save power.
Developer Options
Settings > Developer Options
The Nitro has a powerful 1.5GHz CPU which uses a ton of energy when in heavy use. Some of you might say, "But Matt, I don't use that many apps that need the CPU." Well, it's not that you use them. It's that the ones you have used are likely still running. For example, even though I always use the 'Exit' menu item in Slacker Radio, it will always show up as a running process in Task Manager.
In the Developer Options, there are a few useful ways to fix this problem.
First, check the box next to 'Don't keep activities'. This will cause whatever app you are using to stop completely as soon as it is not on the screen anymore. This is useful if you have the habit of using the 'Home' button when you are done with apps.
Next, set the 'Background process limit' to something other than the standard limit. I have mine set to 4 processes. This will keep processes that are not tied to any specific app in check.
If you use a lot of apps and games that have to render video, it might be a good idea to check the 'Force GPU rendering' box. This will force apps such as games to use the slightly less powerful GPU in the Nitro for video. Thus letting your CPU relax a bit. I have also noticed that heat doesn't build up as much with this box checked.
Lastly, if you want to know about more of the processes that hang in the background that may cause performance issues, you can check the 'Show all ANRs' box. Personally, I found it annoying.
Power Saver
Settings > Power Saver
I was really excited for this feature but also very skeptical. But, I gave it a try anyway. What this feature does is when your battery level gets to a certain percent that you choose, it will turn off power consuming features and change some settings to use less power. I have mine set to engage at 20% battery life.
The tips I have seen say to check every box. But, because of my profession, I have to have 'Auto-sync' left on for emails and such.
With the settings below, I usually see the last 20% of battery last about 4 to 5 hours of medium use.
CPU Clock
*Requires Root*
Unlike all the tips above, this one will require you to root your Nitro.
As I said before, the 1.5GHz CPU uses a ton of power. When you think about it, unless you are playing games all the time or doing some kind of complex calculation as part of your Quantum Physics experiment on you phone, you really don't need all that power. So, what I did was underclocked the CPU to 1GHZ. This gives me the power I need to do what I do but with more efficient energy consumption.
I used SetCPU for this but there are a few other choices out there that do the job just as good.
As you can see from the screenshot below, I have set the max frequency to 1026MHz and the min frequency to 384MHz (I have since set min to 192MHz). I set the governor to 'conservative' based on this post: LINK. But, I think that any of them will help in different ways.
If you are curious, I'm also inserting a screenshot of my benchmarks after the underclock.
CPU Sleep (Suggested by rani9990)
*Requires Root*
XDA user rani9990 suggested an app called CPU Sleeper that, essentially, puts additional cores into an offline mode while the screen is off.
I can see how this would be advantageous because when your phone is in sleep mode, it really doesn't need all that extra power.
I have had it on my phone since i got up this morning and have noticed a significant jump in battery life already.
Results
Before these tips, I was getting about 8 to 9 hours of medium use on a charge.
After, I get roughly 15 to 20 hours of medium use. (It varies from day to day but hovers between 15 and 20.)
If anybody has any other tips, please let me know so I can add them to the list.
You should also tell people to get CPU sleeper (root) saves tons of battery life for me.
Also, disabling haptic feedback saves battery.

! kick ass post!! well-done. fun read too.
thanks!!1
Sadly, battery life on this phone really sucks even with the optimizations. having compared both, I can say that the Nitro HD with optimizations and 3800 mAh Hyperion battery gets about the same battery life as a Galaxy Nexus on the stock ROM and stock battery.

Perhaps check your running processes. With these tweaks in place, I unplugged my Nitro at 7:45is this morning and right now, at 2:15pm, I have 79% battery left and I've made two 15 to 20 minute phone calls and rebooted about 6 times because of some testing I've been doing for another thread.
Also, the Nitro does have a faster CPU that would take more power than the Nexus.
I have done all of this, in addition to in Settings/Wireless & networks there's "more..." click that and theres "Mobile networks".. and the option for "Use only 2g networks" I'm using that for only texting while at work and doing pretty decent with battery life. since 5:45 to now 10AM texting all throughout that time I'm at 85% battery.

I actually don't have that option.

Uhmm.. maybe its a CM9 only feature.. sorry hijacking then.
i found many of these settings are available in cm9 and after making the changes, it appears to me they work very well. thanks again eh.
UPDATE: I refrained from plugging in my phone all day yesterday and got 14 hours and 32 minutes of medium to heavy use.
Sent/Recieved 191 text messages.
Spent 2 hours and 47 minutes on the phone.
Updated 7 apps from the Play Store.
Played Dead Space for roughly 35 minutes.
Checked Facebook 3 or 4 times.
Read a news article online.
I think the battery did pretty good this time around.
Thanks for helpful tips!
The only problem I got is that the screen turned to back (with music still on) when I started NinjaJump with "Force GPU rendering'" checked.
You don't want force GPU rendering checked...

Display Brightness
Settings > Display > Brightness
On my Nitro, the display uses up the most energy by far. So, it only makes sense to lower the brightness a bit to save power

What I`ve noticed is that when I set Brightness to 100% I have 3...3,5 hours of wake working screen active time before battery exhausted. It's on ICS leak V18F. But if I set brightness to 30% or "auto" mode I got about 2....2,5max hours of screen active, it exhausts quicker
And secondly, on CM9 it helps me to check off "surface dithering" in 'performance' options. But on official ROMs we haven't this option available to tweak
I found that JuiceDefender has seriously saved me a whole lotta battery. Like seriously. I was getting 12 hours of medium to heavy usage before, and now i can hit 30 hours of medium usage. Then again, Data isn't turned on for me, I use the phone for Wifi and Calling.

JuiceDefender saved me tons of battery also. But I noticed that it was always waking my phone up for a second at random times. Have you had that issue at all?

Nope, but I don't look at my phone every waking second. Maybe it did do it. But I'm getting a serious boost in battery life so I don't really care.

For me keeping the wifi on (and thus connecting via wifi both at home and in the office) allows me to save battery..
To me it seems strange, because my old phone literally sucked battery while keeping wifi on, but on the nitro wifi consumes less than hsdpa data transfer.
I've added a link to my SetCPU Profiles file in the guide.
low antutu battery benchmark scores
Both stock and CM9 RC2 are disappointing: 250 and 328 respectively. I've applied the suggestions here and don't know if I'm doing something wrong.
I was rather happy with my phone with GB managed by Battery Defender from Infolife. I used to have 1,5 day with "Mostly Idle" usage. Now after upgrade to ICS I just got 10% down per hour on idle. So disappointed. I'll play with your settings a while. May be Battery Defender uninstall/reinstall can help too...

Who Can Get Me 4+ Hours Battery?

Need some help. I use my phone for everything in school; calculator, Wi-Fi, & music for examples. But I'm always let down with the 2 and a half hours screen on time I get. CAn anyone help me with some ROM and Kernel suggestions to achieve 4 or possibly 5+ hours? I've seen people do it just can't figure it out. Battery is the standard 1750mAh and I've underclocked and undervolted. Currently running CM10.2 with mopang kernel (the one for RAM performence). Screen brightness on automatic. Any suggestions are welcome, maybe I can help someone else with this thread.
Buy one of those extended life batteries. I found some on Amazon.
Turn off GPS, WiFi, and Data when not in use.
Turn screen from Automatic to as low as possible. Get rid of or adjust those social networking and email apps etc... If they have their way they would check in every minute just wasting your power.
IMO underclocking and undervolting does nothing but take longer to crunch those numbers and force more screen time which is the biggest draw by far.
Other than buying a new extended life battery due to the overwhelming power usage of the screen any tweaks will only help a little.
