No backlight issue in a dark environment? - HTC One X

I've had the back light issue since day one with my device especially with grey screens. But I'm noticing that the issue is less noticeable in dark envirmments. I keep the auto brightness on at all times FYI. Let me know if you have similar issues.

Possible screen issue? Or not...

So I bought the phone a few days ago and love it (coming from tmo's vibrant). Yesterday however I started noticing something with the screen that I'm not sure if it applies to all of them in one way or another. When you pull the notification curtain down there appears to be a few discolored (darker) vertical lines that are noticeable where it should be solid gray. Depending on the brightness there more visible and vice-versa. I found a thread on the European version of someone reporting the same thing. The lines are definitely more visible with dimmed screen in low light conditions.
Anyone notice a similar deal?
I have the same issue every now and then. Especially when i open the market, not really a nuisance though.

Yeah I noticed it there and on the xda app as well. Just wondering if that's a defect or not, if so I might exchange it. I could still run in to the same issue though..

[Q] POLL: Do you have a flickering screen or NOT?

Some people said it's only some few unlucky ones who got this this problem, but when I see that all the people who have it and got it on 2-3 different devices, I am wondering how big is the percentage of flickering screens on the overall One X army...
Please even if your device doesn't have the flickering issue, VOTE too!
TEST PROCEDURE:
-Minimum brightness and Maximum brightness settings
-preview the greyish snow and sun wallpaper in the ''HTC Wallpapers'' section
If the greys are ''dancing'' then you have flickering
I suppose you mean stroboscope effect on gray backgrounds, right?
I don't own an HTC One X but I think it's like that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jZJfTAcq2g
50/50 till now
We've got plenty of threads discussing this already, my first one did. Got a grey that doesn't. My replacement white so far touch wood doesn't flicker but becomes noticeable after a few days so will monitor it before I decide what to do.

Flickering is for me the strobe effect on grey colors. I think the posted videos describes more the glitches
HTC One X black version here, no problem at all. Screen is fine, battery is fine, I must be lucky I guess.
@jplayer
can you add a link to a video of flickering?
No problems for me

added my vote
if you want to do a flex poll go ahead, but i dont think a lot of people visit the QA especially not happy ones
i personally think flex is in all One X it has to do with poly-carbonate relaxing on heat
Yey already 75% of good devices!
And as you said, we have naturally more deceived people in Q&A section
The ''advantage'' of flex is that it shows from first day so you can always ask for an exchange while the flickering can begin after a week
No problem here

Explanations on the flickering

Unfortunately it looks impossible to make.
Indeed I tried with a few phones to take a video and the flickering is too fast to appear on the video. It's horrible to watch in real but not visible at all on the video.
The refresh rate is probably to high to get seen by the camcorder.
However here is my personal description of the flickering if that can help you :
It looks like the backlight of the screen isn't refreshed fast enough. As if it wasn't powered enough. This idea of bad powering can be right as for me the flickering intensity was changing along discharge. Anyway the backlight is acting weirdly with a strobing effect and it's hard to watch on some color. (mostly grey)
It's as if a few LEDs,not all of the backlight switched on/off 10-15times per second
You mean liek this EVO video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YF7qKHaKPyw

None of those
It's as if only a few leds of backlight were blinking It nevers go completely dark on any region of the screen. The whole display remains on.
Could also be some kind of overpowering on a few leds that gives the feeling of getting flash strobes from your screen.
For the second video in no way the flickering affects the global form of what is displayed.
I voted and then watched the video. No, that's NOT what I mean. My phone flickers a little bit in settings when I scroll (whole screen gets darker/brighter very quickly). I do NOT have the problems mentioned in that video on the first page.
So it's like if the autobrightness was changing brightness in extreme ways?
I used to have this in old SE phones
that is quite the idea and it's nearly only visible on some colors (a lot on grey and for some not at all on other colors)
No problems here.
got the problem posted on the 1st page, however it only happens if i move the notification bar really slowly near the top.
also it only happens in Sense and not in Nova launcher.
aside from that no flicker

So everyone has purple issue at low brightness.....

So I just got my gnex last week and I know that there are issues with purple color at low brightness so my main question is do most just leave the phone on full brightness all the time?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
Full brightness? Wow, that would just kill your battery. I just leave it on auto. I never had had the tint issue though.
Anything lower than like 60% for me has purple tint. I have adjusted and used Franco's kernel and everything. Should I request a replacement phone while I can because I don't know if this is normal or not
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
That's not normal. I get it at the lowest brightness level. I usually have mine at 30%.

I have no purple tint at any brightness.
If it really bothers you you're within your rights to exchange it.
However, there's no guarantee that your replacement will have better tints and there's the possibility that it will have a different sort of defect instead.
I exchanged my purple GNex and received a new one with a dead column of pixels. My 3rd unit is flawless though.
Just be aware that you could be starting a long, tedious and frustrating process of exchanges until you find your Goldilocks Gnex.
No tint at all for me..
"Long is the way, and hard, that out of hell leads up to light."
At the lowest brightness I see the tint you speak of, but anything above that it looks ok.
I've actually gone through 3 devices recently, and on my second one I definitely noticed this issue. Another thing strange is that there was a clearly visible circle at the place where the LED is (under the screen) that is completely invisible on the other two (which do not have a purple tint). I don't know that they're related, but it's just an observation.
Mine has a purple tint at any brightness lesser than 50% also it has a horrible yellow tint, which i managed to improve a lot by using franco kernel color control but the till os still there, since I bought from Amazon us and I live in latinamerica an exchange is totally out of the question I'd say fight for an exchange until you get a perfect screen
, brightness at 100% is too bright for me and besides it eats up the battery. I leave auto brightness on most of the times but it can dim the screen too much, it's very aggressive, so sometimes I just set the brightness to 50%
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
No purple here at all. I was expecting to have it on the lowest setting based on what Samsung considers "normal," but even that setting has nothing but grays when I fire up the Calculator app.

Good place to check, i don't seem to have it on any setting of brightness
Mine has a little bit of graininess at 0%, but anything over 0% and I can't tell.
As for the purple thing, my whites have a slightly blue hue, when not looking head on, but again, it's so faint and not really noticeable that I don't care, plus the brighter I go, the less i notice it.
Mine has a horrible purple tint as well as heaps of other issues. Even on full brightness, the purple still shows through in some places, like the settings menu.
I tried sending it to Samsung and they kept it for two months, did a data wipe, and sent it back to me unfixed.
Edit: And yes I leave it on full brightness all the time, and I still finish the day with about 40% battery left.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
No purple or grain here, like others said the calculator is the best place to check.
I don't have the purple tint problem at lowest brightness thank goodness. But I've seen the issue on a Verizon nexus.
Using the color controls the purple tint could be lowered to a bearable level
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I have my brightness cranked and my battery is still pretty great. After 14 or so hrs I still have about 40%. I do get the purple at lower brightness settings, but I always have mine way up no matter what phone I use.
My gnex nave no noticeable tint at any level of brightness.
This is my second phone without purple tint at any brightness, but this is my 7th Nexus. I was trying to find a phone that didn't have the signal drop issue and in the process got many phones with horribly purple screens. This is a Verizon Nexus btw.

Should I worry about screen burn in?

I'm considering getting the S3 but Im worried about screen burn in. I'm the type of user who uses the lowest brightness possible. Should I worry?
I don't think burn ins are a concern with these screens. I left my screen on on a few separate occasions displaying a single image for over 7 hours each time with no problems so far.
Sent from my SGH-I747M using Tapatalk 2
I wouldn't worry. You need a still image to be up for an extrenuous amount of time. It is possible though, but you'd almost have to try. I haven't seen any posts with users with screen burn either.

Does using the lowest brightness possible reduce the chances of this happening or it doesn't matter?

Use auto brightness.. and set the screen to turn off when your not looking at it.. my S2's screen was messed up but so far with this phone nothing
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
Yeah, you never see much complaints about it but it's definitely possible. I'm going to guess it's less possible than previous version of the AMOLED displays. On my samsung infuse after 2 years of using the AOSP android keyboard, I could somewhat see an imprint of the keyboards keys whenever a dark-grey image is displayed on the whole screen but it was extremely minor.
You will get some burn-in with AMOLED after a few years no matter what. Pentile AMOLED (in the S1 and S3) is also superior to the AMOLED+ in the S2 for longevity, or so says Samsung.
My 2-year old Captivate has some up top where the notification bar is, and on the bottom where the keyboard is, and where the high-contrast black&white WordFeud game tiles are that I always play.
The burn-in ghosting isn't THAT noticeable, though, unless you're viewing mostly white images or webpages.
S3 do have burn ins just to let you know. Download screen filter and lower the filter to 10% or maybe 0% and you will see imprints. or download dead pixel test and the second color will show also all your burn in.

Also be in a dark room. Since in daylight you won't see the result.

[Q] Screen bleeding - anyone else?

When I run this app, and adjust it (using volume buttons) to run at 100% brightness, I get screen bleeding on the left and top right sides of the screen:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.joeleveque.backlightbleedtest&hl=en
http://i.imgur.com/fvf5Hos.jpg
The picture doesn't really do it justice, it's quite distracting when looking at dark images.
I was thinking of taking it back and swapping it for a new one. Before I do I wanted to make sure this isn't a problem with all units. Can anyone else replicate (or not) this issue after running the linked app?
You should return it.
I installed the app on my nexus 7.2 and the color was even through out.
I've got bleeds on the upper left, but I didn't return mine. Apart from light bleed, which is prominent and ugly in dark, nothing's wrong. So I've retained mine.
Fair enough, I'm wondering if it's worth bothering returning it now.
I have what I consider minor light bleed. I only see it on the bootscreen. I opted to keep it because the next one could be worse.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I should also add that I'm extremely picky
Sent from my SGH-M919 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Have not seen any on mine. Admittedly, it would probably have to be significant before it bothered me, so I may have a minor amount and it just isn't noticeable. Also, I don't want to go looking for problems that don't affect me. I'd drive myself nuts!
I noticed today that my nexus had some light bleed. Should it be exchanged? I have no multi touch problems/random reboots/ghost touches/GPS issues or any of the other mentioned problems.
