[Q] SIM asks for PIN multiple times during day - HTC One X

Hi,
I have a problem with my HTC one x.. I have a pin set on the SIM card which I enter as soon as I power on the phone... The problem is that sometimes I unblock the phone to use it and I find it one the PIN screen, as if the SIM was reset... Does it happen to any of you? May it be a software bug or a hardware bug related to the SIM tray? I've written to the support to notify the problem and make them consider it for future fw releases and they answered me telling me how to remove the PIN from the phone
It is quite annoying since if you do not unblock the phone you risk to miss some calls and sms if the SIM gets blocked... I hope I won't need to send it to HTC...
I've just published my first android application, SIM Locked Notifier, which enables you to activate a ringtone or vibration (or both) when PIN/PUK is required. In this way you avoid missing calls or messages when your phone is out of the network, waiting for a PIN.
Get SIM Locked Notifier on Google Play!
I hope you find it useful, yesterday it warned me two times about this PIN issue (I'm happy because my app works, but I'm worried about this issue... hope they solve it soon).
The app is not heavy, it does nothing until the SIM State changed broadcast event is fired and the state is PIN/PUK required.
REMEMBER: run the app at least once after installation to enable the SIM Locked Notifier monitor. You must do this only once after installation, then it works even after a reboot.

Just a question to be sure: you aren't putting the device in "Flyplane Mode" right ? Because that makes the device lose all signal and requires to re-enter the pin code on activating.
Nevertheless this could be some kind of signal issue or an issue with the sim. Did you perhaps cut the micro-sim by yourself ? If so you could try to get a new one or try the sim card of a friend to see if that one works.
If none of the above is possible just try a hard reset (not a factory reset) and remove the sim card, check for any kind of dust or damage and plug it back in.
If problem continues I'd go back to your store and ask them if they know what to do.

No, it was not in airplane mode.. I've cut the sim at the beginning and after I noticed this problem I've bought a new micro SIM.. sure the bad signal is a problem where I work, which is the place where I've experienced the problem more times.. how is a hard reset done? Do I loose my data? Thanks

The same happens to my phone. 5 minutes ago, while having no signal, but using wi fi, my phone asked pin code. i have a 3 micro sim, not a cut one

Beware this is a great problem. My wife had a Nokia E63 if i remember good and she had the same problem with it.Several times a day the phone asked her to enter the PIN.When she got the phone to Nokia they gave her a new one because the motherboard was faulty and it kinda makes sense because the sim reader is attached to the motherboard and the only way you can fix it is to get a new motherboard.Get your phone to repair immediately.

i don't think is an hardware issue. it does not happen every day and only staying for a long time without signal. i think i is the radio software. in fact it happens after installing ota update

Hello,
don't blame me for my first post. Exactly the same problem happens to me also. HTC ONE x updated 2 days ago and if phone gets to an area of no signal it askes for PIN again.
Simobil (Vodafone) in Slovenia

I've updated this morning to 1.29, let's see if it solves the problem.. btw today I've noticed that if it looses signal because there is bad signal in the area, sometimes when you exit that area it keeps saying that there is no signal.. swimching to 2g+3g from 2g only or vice versa it makes it reconnect to the cellular network.. these seem some sort of radio bugs...
Inviato dal mio HTC One X con Tapatalk 2

It happened again, where signal was bad, even on fw 1.29
Inviato dal mio HTC One X con Tapatalk 2

Same here
Have the same problem, only without PIN (I have not enabled it). So the phone loses signal (it's pretty weak), and then just hangs in 'no network' mode.
Also when starting up, I often see 'preparing SIM' message, and SIM application (SIM Tools or something like that) is 'unavailable' when I try to run it.
I'll try to find out if it depends on provider, but my Desire with the same provider works just fine right here side-to-side with OneX.
Hope it's a software bug, not hardware - I've bought my OneX on Clove with shipping to Russia, it'll take time to ship it back for repair or replace, and official service centers here will not take my phone, I think

I have the same problem on my Three 1.28 firmware here in the UK.....
Noticed it after it got updated from 1.26.....

Just updated to the new firnware, which has new radio fw.. maybe the issue is solved now.. I think my app will have very very few downloads, btw it has been a good test project to learn a bit about android

For a while it seemed to me it was a software problem but today I decided to look around in the XL forum if I could find people having the same problem, since they have basically the same hardware but a very different radio and it looks like they too have the problem. I think it most be a mechanical problem but since I unlocked I am out of warranty. Maybe we can think of a solution. I tried sticky tape on the back but that doesn't work, maybe the sim shorts, like it did for iphone users: http://www.iphoneradar.co.uk/news/iphone-4-signal-fix/
anyway maybe we can think of a fix, a way to scrape the sim/add stick/ bend sim tray so it won't happen

I've just installed the OTA update and I'm waiting to see if it happens again in the next day.. I still don't know if it is a radio firmware bug or an hardware bug of our HOX... In the meanwhile you can use my app, SIM Locked Notifier, to notify yourself if the phone is asking for the SIM pin code (it saves you from loosing important calls..).
REMEMBER: launch the app once at least after installation in order to make it working.. then it automatically works even after a reboot.

Well I finally found out the cause of the problem, it an improper fit of the tray in the tray holder, a slight bend of the cause or the tray can cause a disconnect. If you still have warranty claim it, else you could try buying a new tray (cheap around 5 euros on ebay) or if you are adventurous you could tray opening your hox, be sure to tape the buttons before opening it!!!! and watch the videos before you do it

If the sim disconnects, first the signal will drop, I believe there is some time out, if it disconnects for a certain time it will ask for the pin again, else it will just reconnect. At first I was convinced it was a software issue because that's what baadnwz (the maker of the insertcoin roms) said, and he has made some changes to the framework which improve the issue but after having opened my hox I am convinced it's a mechanical problem. If you don't believe me try to open your hox with the sim tray inserted and see that you will get sim disconnect errors when you start applying force

so you believe its a hardware issue?
im sending my hox in , im so fed up of this issue.
it cant be the thickness of the sim card cause without even touching the phone the signal comes back after like 20 mins and it prompts again

[Q] Phone does not work in the UK

Hi All,
I have bought an unlocked HTC about 3 years ago, and basically, this works with any SIM. I have used it all over Europe, with no problems. However I am having trouble using it here in the UK.
Any ideas as to why this is happening?
How about some more information, eg what sim, what troubles, etc.

The SIM is Vodafone, and I cannot connect to the network, ie no calls or sms. I tried the SIM in another phone and it works. So it is the HTC that is giving problems. And I am sure that the HTC is unlocked, since I have tried other SIM cards when in Europe and all of them worked.
I have another SIM from Vodafone from another country in Europe, and it does not work either inside the HTC.
Possible cure?
If you don't have a SIM PIN, try setting one. If you already have one, skip that step. Then, try changing your screen security, for example from Slider to a PIN and then back to Slider.
I put a known good SIM in my phone in the UK and had no wireless connectivity until I forced the phone to ask me for my SIM pin while it was running (i.e., not on boot - rebooting didn't help). For some reason, changing the screen security triggered a request to enter the SIM pin, and then suddenly wireless was back.
I can't repeat the cause of the lost connectivity, but I have repeated this cure on subesquent occasions when I've lost wireless.
Take your HTC to Vodafone. There might be some settings missing.

[Q] I think the radio module is broken. Do I need to replace it?

I need a second opinion about the radio on my Galaxy Nexus. Help!
Context
I recently switched from the GNex to a Nexus 4. I wanted to give my old GNex to my sister, but the glass was slightly cracked from a fall a couple months ago. So before giving it away, I decided to purchase a glass/digitizer from eBay and replace it myself - the part was something like this. The process involved taking apart the frame from the digitizer/glass - which some of you know are fused together. Everything went well (or I thought so).

The new screen works, and I gave the phone to my sister. She popped in her SIM card (we're both customers of Fido in Canada). But she's now having problems getting the GNex unto Fido - actually, she can't see any network signal at all.
Screenshots / Symptoms
1. Lockscreen says "no service"
2. In Mobile Networks > Network operators, I can see the phone searching for available networks, but after 20-30 seconds, it just returns a blank list (no network displayed)
3. The baseband is correctly displayed in the About menu (i9250XXLJ1).
4. Under Status, the network is shown as "Unknown", mobile network type: "UNKNOWN:0", service state: "Out of service", and Mobile network state: "Disconnected"
5. The IMEI or phone number seem OK.
6. I went into the Phone info menu (*#*#4636#*#*). [ image 1 ] [ image 2 ]. Current network is blank. The signal strength feels weird (can anyone confirm if that number makes sense?).
7. Not sure if that's related, but I installed GPS Test and unable to get a GPS lock. It could simply be that I have no mobile signal in the first place, but Wi-Fi works fine, so shouldn't I be able to get a GPS signal anyway?
Here's what I tried so far to fix it:
1. Reboot / Battery pull: I did the usual reboot, battery pull, as well as toggling Airplane mode on and off - no dice.
2. Sim card: At first I thought maybe we needed a new SIM card, but it works fine when I insert it in a different phone (Nexus S). I also haven't seen any error message pertaining to the SIM - just "No service". We also tried another friend's SIM card and still seeing "No Service". So I don't think the SIM card is faulty.
3. Checking with carrier: I called our network carrier (Fido) and they're not seeing anything unusual on their end. Account in good standing, and as I said before, I can use the SIM card in an older Nexus S. I also made sure that the IMEI number wasn't blacklisted, which it doesn't appear to be. At this point, I'm confident the problem lies in the device and has nothing to do with network or coverage.
4. Cerberus anti-theft app: This one I'm unsure about. Before all this happened, Cerberus was installed on my GNex. I set it up so that unauthorized SIM cards would be reported to my email. When we swapped SIM cards, I got the expected warnings from Cerberus, which I ignored since I was the one who did the switch. But after experiencing the problems with the network, I went back to my inbox and noticed some emails displayed the Network operator as 302720 (Fido), and then some would show 0000 () - see the screenshot, the emails are just a few minutes apart but show different network data. I find that odd. Is there any chance that Cerberus may have messed with a setting and blocked the SIM card from the device? However, I did wipe the device and flashed back to stock. I also re-installed Cerberus and made sure my sister's SIM card is registered as authorized. We're still seeing "No service".
5. Factory reset / Flashing to stock The phone was previously rooted and used to run Paranoid Android v3.65 before I replaced the screen. I never had signal issues on that ROM. To make sure it wasn't the ROM or Cerberus causing the problem, I did a factory reset. That didn't fix it. So I flashed the phone back using Google's factory image (takju 4.2.2 build JDQ39) - completely back to stock, including bootloader, baseband radio-maguro-i9250xxlj1.img and a full wipe. Even on stock, I get the same results as shown in the screenshots (no signal, no mobile network).
6. Radio settings (*#*#4636#*#*): The last thing I tried to do is modify some of the radio settings: turning radio on and off, rebooting. And trying a different preferred network type (GSM Auto vs. WCDMA, etc). None of these worked. It keeps defaulting to WCDMA after a reboot, but I don't think that would prevent me from getting a signal (on the Nexus 4, that's exactly what I'm seeing, and it works on Fido).
I don't know what else to do. At this point, I think it's gotta be a hardware problem. Perhaps something went wrong when I manipulated the frame (the speaker/radio module at the bottom)? I also think that it's the modem (and NOT the SIM card holder) that I need to look into. My last resort is to purchase a new antenna off eBay and attempt to replace it in a couple days. I'm desperate and really hoping that can solve it.
In the meantime if anyone has a second opinion or suggestions, I'd be so grateful!!!
Is there anything else I can try or may have forgotten about?
Thanks!
I'm in the exact same boat! Apart from occasionally the lockscreen shows my network. I've flashed more things than a camera.
Have you got a generic IMEI? When I unlocked my phone it changed my IMEI to the generic one and I'm wondering if this may be the cause of my problems, check yours out.
EDIT: sorry reread it, yea your IMEI is fine, so my problem must have nothing to do with that either.
At least yours is occasionally picking up a network. Are you on stock, and did you try to use the SIM card on a different device?
Mine keeps saying "No service". I don't even have "Emergency calls only". Some people will see their network, then get "Can't connect right now. Please try again later". But mine is not even detecting any network. It's as if the antenna was off, even though the settings say it's on.
I'm hoping someone with a good knowledge of components/hardware can shine a light.
Mine varies between showing my network and no service. I'd just go for it and replace the antenna, its pretty easy to do. Let us know the results!
I've ordered one, so I'll let you know, should be tomorrow.

Sadly, replacing the radio module didn't fix the problem for me either. Still seeing "No service". I can't think of any other way to get a mobile signal. If anyone has any ideas, feel free!
At this point, my GNex is reduced to a WiFi-only device.
My last attempt is to flash the stock image for 4.3 released today by Google. I noticed the baseband is still XXLJ1. If that doesn't work, I'll try flashing an older radio.
I have the same problem. No signal, no IEMI..WIFI-only. I don't why..
someone said that maybe the EFS partition was corrupted. And then maybe a professional tool can fix it..SPT box..

The crazy signal strength values are due to an int32 buffer overflow when trying to calculate signal strength, and is typically due to the radio driver not loading correctly OR bad radio...
If you enable USB debugging and "adb logcat -b radio" do you notice anything interesting?
To whomever said they have signal in some places: sounds like someone inserted an external antenna into a port under the back cover, as a lot of us probably know, that permanently disables the internal antenna, leaving you without signal unless you're virtually next to a tower.

Mi Max Helium strange Sim-Card Behaviour

I own a Mi Max Helium and from the first day I use it with open bootloader and Custom Roms.
After 4 Weeks of using the strange things began:
- I lost network sometimes, but most of the times it was back in seconds. (once or twice a day)
- then randomly the MiMax said there is no sim card installed. Ok reboot phone and everything was okay. (once or twice a day)
- then it happened every hour
- and then sometimes after some hours or some minutes - not replicatable
- as a last step rebooting the phone doesn´t help. I have to kick out the Sim, wait some seconds and put it in again
Ok I thought it was a fault with the custom roms.
Made a real big factory reset with mi flash tool and cleaned the whole phone like a new device after the delivery.
After the first reboot it wasn´t able to find any simcard (IMEI und EFS was okay), so I thought phone or SimCard has a defect.
Took a simcard from my girlfriend - everything was working fine. Took my simcard in the MiMax and curiously everything was working fine
Flashed Xenon HD Custom Rom and everything worked well the last 4 Weeks and now the whole Sh*t begins again in the same way like described above.
Wtf is that behaviour? Can anybody report similar things?
Using SIM-Slot 1 or SIM-Slot 2 makes no difference. Its not logical or reproducible for me
T-Mobile? There has been reports not only fo Mi Max but One Plus X and some other Chinese brands killing particular tipes of T-Mobile sim cards by constantly trying to write on them. Sounds exactly what you are describing.
Solution is call T-Mobile, they know the issue and should replace sim card with the right tipe.

Interesting. No I´m using a german multiple provider called 1&1 and they use Vodafone D2 Network here.
They also use Telefonica (ePlus & O2), but the reason for that behaviour could be the same. I will call my provider and hope the know similar cases.
Thanks for the advice so far :good:
Well I share you problem I am.from Chile and this started to happen after updating to official ROM 8.2.3.0
I tried for months to find a fix but in the end I've noticed in my country all operators started using 4g band 28 (700mhz aggregation) band is not compatible with my Max prime (helium)
This doesn't explain why the card is lost until rebooting the Phone though.
A good thing is to set auto turn off in security app at 7:00am then enable auto turn on at 7:10 am this way your phone will work in the morning and not lose any important phone calls.
Check out this thread
Do you have any similar symptoms? Can you search for networks manually? I can't

More than once an hour 'no signal' and back button acting up?

Hi, I've problems with my device I bought online. Mainly the cellular signal keeps dropping to 0 rendering the service to be unusable. I wanted to make a thread to know if we could fix this ourselves because I didn't want to send this back to the store.
Here's the list of failures I've tried:
1. Tried to insert my sim to either slots
2. Inserted another sim card
3. Inserted both sim card and tried to swap it's slots
4. Deactivated Volte
5. Tinkered with cellular data APNs. (Mainly copied the settings from my other phone)
5. Restored factory settings
6. Repeated these steps after restoring factory settings
Also, Whenever I'm browsing media and whatnot, the back button seems to trigger itself. (once or twice every 20 minutes while watching a video).
Miui 9.0.2.0 (Philippines, Globe sim card [Other networks have the same problem])
I haven't unlocked bootloader, rooted or installed custom roms because I didn't want to void warranty and waste my time and money.
I'm hoping we could fix these problems ourselves. Any thoughts of what I should do? Should I just return this?
my "no signal" story: after 3 weeks my new mi6 got no signal anymore. i read many topics on xda, and thought it might be a software issue. although i decided to head to my mobile provider and asked for help. i got a new nfc simcard which solved the problem till now. it seems there are some issues with old european simcards on new chinese mobiles. the simcard just crashes and you loose signal.

Thanks for the reply, I'm gonna have to try and change my sim. The back button is probably a defect. It's getting worse.

Networ Signal Loss after update

Hi..
I have a Zenfone 5Z, bought on GearBest, so yesterday it updated to the latest WW version o it's on. After updating it lost the Network Signal, even after a several restarts. I've downgraded it to WW__ZS620KL_80.10.8.54_MP_user_20180517175955 , but still no network signal.
I've tested my simcard in other phones, other simcards in my phone, but still nothing. When i try manual network seach, it gives an error, and when i select automatic network, it says that is already registered to network, and when i try to make a call, it says me to turn off airplane mode to make a call. Also when i remove and reinsert the simcard it recognizes it a makeme chose betwen sim 1 and 2.
I've attached few screenshots too.
Pleaase help me guys!
P.S. i gave this phone to my wife on her birthday, now, she is mad with me!
HI,
I had this same issue, later i checked up with service center, they told charging pcb(which contains antenna lines) was water damaged.
Then got replaced the part and started working again.

Yes, but after an update you lost network signal?
My phone never got wet, and never fell down.
Thanks!

Hi, Yes, even I had not let my phone get wet or dropped but phone is so worst when it comes to water resistance.
Smallest moisture in hands while using the phone is enough to spoil the PCB.

Nop, i had to send the phone to Asus authorized service center, they changed the SUB PBA...
I works for exact 30 days and, after a restart becouse the system crashed, it has no network again!
so i sent it to serce center again today...
As I don't see a reply stating how it got resolved, I will post my experience of this issue. Firstly, this issue is fairly common with Huawei 5Z. The reason given by local service team here is at times if the phone experiences some jerk the contact from antenna to motherboard breaks. At times it could still remain connected in which cases person may get signal some time and get airplane mode at others, in many cases airplane mode is ON permanently. Apparently they have some kind of a glue with which they can attach the antenna permanently. Once I got it done, the problem has not resurfaced.
P.S. this problem has got nothing to do with software, so restart, factory reset etc. will not work, nor does it happen with software upgrades. It is purely mechanical in nature and does not need even require a drop. but the solution is quite simple provided the service centre team knows. In case they don't just ask them to stick the antenna connector with a proper glue and it should be sorted.
What am I supposed to do with my set. I imported it to my country and can't find a service center anywhere in my country. Apparently I can't find any solution online so I am out of luck. If there is anyway I can fix it, or anyone could share what should be replaced will be immensely helpful.
Need your help guys.

Based upon above comment if the root cause is same as described i.e. connection b/w motherboard and antenna bands is broken then you can watch teardown video on YouTube for 5z by wit rigs. It shows how you can disassemble each part of the device for repair.
Apparently you will need to have some expertise and tools available to perform the task yourself. Better work with some local mobile repair workshop and explain them by showing video and above comment.
i am currently using 5z and i can says its due to updates especially from oreo to pie ( yes this problem is originated from that update). Its a software problem and they cannot solve the bug till now. There are still lots of 5Z with this issue pop up every week. The solution is to send to service centre to replace the motherboard and pray it wont happened again. This is my second time sending my phone there for the same issue. The antenna or motherboard dont simply fry or disconnect after an updates thats for sure.
Randomly changing different sim cards in the sim slots along with fiddling with the mobile data setting that comes when you insert the sim card tray worked for me, it worked for someone in zenfone forum also. Give a try and let everyone know..
Same here, after update signal lost... damn ASUS
My network signal stopped out of the blue and not after an update.
I tried changing sim cards in a lot of different combinations, but nothing worked, but the phone always found the sim cards.
I disassembled the phone, removed the antenna cable and attached it again and now the network signal is back again.
I had same problem. After the latest update, Everything working fine untill one day i restarted my mobile. Damn.. After reboot, the signal disappeared and can see 'x' at signal bar. I have rebooted many times but of no luck. Then i removed the sim tray , swapped the sims and then the signal starts showing. Initially after the update, one time I faced same issue but that got cleared after I disabled and enabled the sim in "Sim Card Information". The only issue i a, facing is the signal drops for every few minutes or hours and comes back automatically. That's what making me to replace my phone other than ASUS. Does anybody have a solution for this issue?
Update :
My phone had a sudden reboot and since then there is no network. Showing no service even if i swapped sims and re inserted. frustrated with ASUS

No. In my case/In most of the cases, its not the harware issue. initially i thought the same. But later found that only after updating to the latest update i faced network loss issue. sim not used to detect even after taking the sim tray out, shuffling with sims. I downgraded the firmware to previous version and then immediately i could see full network signal. So the issue is only with the latest, not with the hardware. Just give a try and confirm..
The same i have mentioned in that post also. Just give a try and update. Definitely that will work

So I can do the same as you: downgrade to get fine.
But how to still updated firmware and keep the signal?

The only solution is to walk to the nearest service center and make the antenna fixed. I have given my phone to the authorised service center and they resolved the issue by applying glue to antenna (they told same). They charged for the diagnosis as well as for glue. They guaranteed that the issue wont repeat. But i hated the service by ASUS and planning to go for samsung or Oneplus.. My suggestion is go to service center to get it fixed
For all of you still facing the issue, the solution is extremely simple. And yes it is purely mechanical in nature just like someone mentioned too. I just wrote a post regarding this. Check it out.

It does not even require to take the phone apart.
