So I got my One X since thursday and noticed my screen has a "Yellow tint". I compared it with my Desire HD, which is more white..
Went to some shops to compare it.. one had about the same, and the other I compared with, had a noticeble difference, like on these pictures

Started a search at Google and found this post:
After all this trouble and bickering I finally have 2 Iphones side by side in the comfort of my home to compare.
1x 16gb Iphone 4 week 44 (Blue Tint) (My girlfriend)
1x 32gb Iphone 4 week 36 (Yellow Tint) (Mine)
Set both to max brightness:
Blue Tint:
- appears brighter
- more "White" when on the brightness screen settings
- when tilted to its side and there were no apparent "Light Bleed"
Yellow Tint:
- appears less bright
- less "White"
- when tilted LED backlit can be seen. However, only when looking at this extreme angle. Less extreme angle this is not an issue and should not be of a concern for both Screen Tints
Here's a thread describing what I mean by "tilted to side":
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1030940
Here is what's really surprising
Colors:
Many look at the white screen and think the Blue Tint is a superior screen to the "Yellow Screen" but I exclusively own only IPS screens for my desktop, TV, and laptop and have compare many screens for color reproduction as well as the famous IPS viewing angles.
To do this comparison, the wallpaper settings was use for the many photos as well as Iphone dead pixel test for solid one color (black, red, blue, etc...). The lights was turned off so to get the full effects of the comparison.
Result:
Wow...the yellow screen reproduced color very accurate like an IPS screen should. Blacks look black, yellows are yellows, etc..., pictures are detailed and color accurate.
Blue Tint screen is a tiny bit of a disappointment. Colors look a little washed out. Blacks appear to have tint of gray. Color reproduction was off and not as accurate as the yellow screen. Only the blank white screen appears to be more vibrant but I suspect this is due to its unnatural color reproduction of "White".
Conclusion:
The "Yellow Tint" many of you have complained about (including myself) is not an issue but in actuality a blessing. The "Yellow Tint" has superior color reproduction...Whites, blacks, red, yellow, etc...you name it. However, on initial encounter the "Blue Tint" will appear whiter, brighter, and is reminiscent of TN screen technology and will offer an instant gratification that it is a superior screen but in fact the opposite. However, those who appreciate brightness more than color accuracy should be content with the "Blue Tint" while those who are more picture/graphical directed should opt for the "Yellow Tint". Either screen will be fine for Smart Phone operations but I prefer the "Yellow Tint" and my GF likes the "Whiter-Blue Tint"...Win Win.

Can someone confirm this quote? Is the "Yellow Tint" better?
Because I'm doubting about going to exchange my phone in the store
here is my feedback on this I spent time with both, both have their virtues, keep in mind out of box both will be extra yellower than usual due to lamination glue, needs few days to reach full brightness n colors

yes the more i work the my One X, the more i realize things about the two screens
- Warm screen: Saturated colors, sharper contrast, less bright, more yellow/red whites, flawless color banding (display tester), no visible pixel grid, slightly better blacks. conclusion: richer like amoled
- Whiter screen: Accurate colors, less contrast, a lot more bright, colder whites, not as flawless color banding (display tester), very faint but visible pixel grid. conclusion: accurate like iphone
Both still the best screens i ever saw on a mobile device
here is my white screen from angle, you can see my semi dead pixel at the end of the word notifications, it only shows in angle and solid brightness, doesn't appear on black, its only annoying when im using the phone tilted like laid down on the table and im using whats app i can see it
absolutely no gap, flex or flicker so far
i also have the line in the polycarbonate shell like some reported, its in the lower left corner of the glossy side, perfectly straight seems part of the production process, the soft coated edge under the front screen is not as perfectly finished there is some noise in the coating and a tiny bump plus a pealed off edge, needs very close observation to see it
All not worth complaining about, i'm just showing you that even on the 9th One X i unboxed so far its still not a perfect specimen
by the way it mentions in the manual that the battery will stop charging if it gets hot as a precaution, same situation with iPad3

you can adjust your screen with this app; Screen Adjuster
Add for example, +12 to blue
But it makes your phone a little less smooth..
Well the HTC One X has a "Super IPS LCD2" screen whereas the iPhone 4 has a "LED-backlit IPS TFT", so while the yellow-tinted screen may be better on the iPhone, it might not necessarily be the same for the One X.

True, but I think it's similar to the One X, despite the screen difference.
What do you think is better? The "Yellow tint" or the "Blue tint" screen?
Does one of the phones run a custom rom on the pic of the two X's.
Or why is one bar green and the other blue on the brightness bar?

Yeah, I'm not saying your OP (or the guy you quoted) is wrong or anything, just some things to think about
We need to get the 2 screens side by side really to fully test them out.

Both stock.. you can change your HTC theme, when you use the HTC aluminium skin, you'll get blue instead of green

on the picture it shows 2 next to each other, both stock
also, I went to the city yesterday, to check with some demo models
1 got the "yellow tint" and the other one got the "blue tint, more white"
Comparing the output of the "yellow" screen with my calibrated monitor, I don't think it is over-saturated. It looks pretty "bang-on" in that aspect and one of the best phone screens I have seen in that regard. So if the "white" screen is less saturated, it is probably that one that is more wrong in that regard.
Saying that, I don't really care how accurate a phone screen is as long as it looks pleasing to the eye. In that regard, I would probably prefer the whiter one.
Often the reason for colour temperature choices of backlight is to do with the saturation.
One of my 6 HTC One Xs had the whiter screen and it was immediately apparent that it was different. It also had different viewing angles to the yellowy one. However, it was also clear that while it was brighter, that black level was not as good either.
Neither screen is perfect....and trying to find the whiter one is like a lottery because there are clearly less of those in circulation so far.
After quite a number of years we are still scrapping around to get screens with good backlights, good colour temperature, good uniformity, no bleed, no stuck/dead pixels. Technology has not moved as fast as I would have hoped.
I think the biggest issue is not which screen is the best, but that the consumer doesn't know what he's going to get. That's really bad and unacceptable. The difference is too big to be a normal situation.
Ok, than I just keep the one I got now
i know the warm one might look less appealing to the eye, since colder tint is always more eye pleasing but the warm one has a lot going on for it
better blacks and hence better contrast, flawless in banding test and most importantly no visible pixel grid (the scan-line like grid on the white version)
both are amazing, much better contrasts than the iPhone4 Retina display and iPad3
and i really think we are starting to get spoiled if we exchange for this reason

Gah, sorry, the pictures didn't show up for me when I posted ><
The "blue tint" looks a lot better in my opinion, I realise the "yellow tint" one may technically be better, but the "blue tint" is much easier on the eye.
I've got a blue tint display on my One X and I've had some yellow tint display devices (not One X, but some "old" Motos with LCD and some other HTCs with LCD).
I've always hated the yellow tint and I find the blue one is better.
Also, I've tried to get a blue tint using screen adjuster softwares on my yellow tint displays, without any particular success....while on blue tint displays I've been able to get yellow tint just fine.
Personally, I think blueish ones are better.
Have any of you complaining (op not intended) actually compared the two screens on THIS phone. I did a little test in the store and can confirm what has been said here about warmer tinted ips screens. The yellow one, on this phone, is amazing the contrast is deep, colors jump from the screen and I found that even the viewing angle was far superior to the colder tinted screen. I specifically bought the warmer tinted screen as, apart from displaying an entirely white screen, I and the store employees all found it to be much much better, very close to amoled.

Most people arn't returning their phones because yellow screen is not a issue for them. Interesting

I can confirm this except the view angles which get darker on the yellow screen
depth and contrast for sure like amoled, also it has a significant advantage if you look close the screen doesn't not show any pattern, while the whiter acer screen has a horizontal lines grid
people who updated to 1.29 are saying it cures the extra yellow if that is the case on the yellow screen, it becomes the winner in my eye
I really hate the grid on the acer screen it reduces pixel density, it's very faint but its there
I would definitely change back to the yellow/sharp if I get the change, its more impressive overall and calibration can always be fixed either by an HTC update or dev efforts
Never noticed a yellow tint on my phones original screen. When I got it back from repair it now has a yellow tint. Definately noticable to acceptable to me
If you have this issue, just call HTC and tell them about your situation, they will normally replace it with a new one.

Hi,
Ok first of all i know that there are other threads related to this thing, those threads defined the problem and many posts were speculations and wondering wither its hardware/software/glitch .... etc
As i was searching about this and saw the other members conclusions I wanted to start a new thread so any new member comes and read this and know exactly why is this happening to him/her, and wither its a real problem or not.
Desire's AMOLED displays have a big resolution 480*800 pixels, and have different sub-pixels arrangement in it, each pixel have "RedGreen" and the one after it is "BlueGreen" .... RG BG RG BG, .. etc, that is PenTile Matrix, while other LCD and "normal" displays have RGB RGB RGB, ... etc
for more info about this, click here
the pentile matrix looks exactly like this
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_share": "Share",

"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Now the effect of this matrix is double edged, instead of having 3 sub-pixels in each pixel, we have 2 sub-pixels in each pixel, this saves power, precious battery power, but also this arrangement of sub pixels contributes to the issue somehow because the colors will not "look" exactly the way they are (the way the RGB matrix show it, which is used in most of our displays like TV, PC, LAPTOP, ... etc), there will be slight difference due to the screen "approximation", and that difference is NOT noticeable in most cases, only in few cases where the solid colors intersects with each other.
see the posted screenshot of Gmail app with the gradient color near it
see how the color picker identified the gray color, .. and how close it is to the pink, the pink showed due to the display approximation of the color.
and most importantly see how "photohop" saw the color as "not a web safe color" and see how it showed in the small square the pink color!
photoshop detects this because it knows that if an "approximation" happens than this will be displayed as pink.
And not only that, photoshop suggests that you put a "safe" color, and it shows "pink" instead of the gray as a suggestion!! why is that?
To find the answer, look at the circle in the color gradient board, you will see that this "gray" is nearer to the pink than it is to the actual gray!!!
and here we are seeing it pink on the Desire's AMOLED devices, what a surprise!
Now notice how the upper bar is dead gray, and does not have any pink in it, that is because its "GRAY" is not close or near any other visually-different color. and of course photoshop identified it as "SAFE for web", and that even if an approximation happens, this will still be rendered as gray
the good news is, it will NOT be noticeable in most of the cases, because most of the colors are not gray scaled and not "visually close to the human eye" to other colors, as you can see from the gradient color posted there are many "safe" grays out there, ... but google had to choose that gray that is near the pink
Now the bad news is, that this is NOT an android software problem, it is a hardware (display/calibration) issue.
but does that mean it cannot be solved "indirectly" by software? .... not sure, am thinking of what if Android created a layer where it picks each color and see wither its safe or not, .. if its not safe than do an OS approximation for that color, if its "gray near pink" change it to "gray" and pass it to the AMOLED as "safe color". not sure how that would be implemented or what is the weight and impact.
but as i mentioned before, if apps stick to "safe" colors, this will insure that even if an approximation happened, nothing will be noticeable
------------
UPDATE For people who think that the issue is from the browser and not from the AMOLED display that has PenTile matrix.
here is a screenshot from Android SDK emulator with the same browser as in Desire (WebKit)
here is a screen shot of the original website from the PC, using Google Chrome browser
and here is a screenshot of the site taken directly from HTC Desire (the site has been visited from the HTC Desire and a screenshot was taken and transfered)
Its pretty clear that the browser is not the real issue (even though it has some slight very slight pinkish hue), the pinkish is alot worst in the desire than what is the emulator and the screenshots show
-------------
UPDATE
After seeing the below pictures (thanx onkolog for posting those pics!), one can conclude that this "gray shades to strong pinkishness" issue is definitly not a general AMOLED issue.
People reported that in Samsung Galaxy, and Legend (Both AMOLED but not PenTile matrix) have slight pink viewing the htc.com site, but it is nowhere as pink as found in the HTC Desire
HTC Desire:
HTC Legend
as the pictures shows clearly that the legend (which has AMOLED display with normal RGB implementation) shows the Gray as pretty Gray (not as pink as the Desire).
here is a pic of the Desire & Legend side-by-side with the HTC website shown
(thank you ohyeahar for this shoot). the Desire has more pinkishness than the legend, the legend seems fine but some people said that it also has some slight pink (not as desire though)
as you can from the photo and as ohyeahar stated (having both devices, legend and desire) that its not a real issue, but its there if you really look for troubles you will find it, otherwise normally you wouldnt be annoyed from it
EDIT: some people have pink hue all over the screen, not only particular apps/colors, .. IMO this just your device, and you should replace your device
EDIT: I used web-safe colours as a technique to show how the colours might look different due to screen approximation the web-safe colours is not designed to detect the approximation of the Desire's AMOLED accurately, it is designed for web approximation due to compression, but they are similar some how, in terms of that colours are getting approximated and changed sometimes to the nearest possible colour thats why i used it.
the "web-safe" approximation only appears when an image is compressed for web standards (or approximated in case of the Desire's AMOLED), .. some images are not compressed for web use, you see the the HTC.com page gray on your monitor, and i see it gray on my nokia e75, but it looks pink in the Desire's AMOLED because the display of the desire (and i suspect android too) approximate the colour, and i used the web-safe colour technique to detect that (even though that this technique is not dedicated to identify the Desire's AMOLED approximation)
Thanks irkan for that. That goes a long way to explaining why we're getting this pink tint in the same screen when we can also see pure grey.
So, now, what can I/we do ... should we replace our Desires for new ones or not? I suppose there is no harm, just the inconvenience of setting it up again ...

as i mentioned in the last line, if you see those damn pink tints every where, than most probably your device is faulty, but if you only see them in GMail app and some few other occasions, than its just the display.
but you know what, if you still feel unsatisfied just go and replace it, setting up a new phone is a pleasure with the desire
It is quite disappointed ... I meant, the AMOLED and Pentile Matrix are suppose to improve battery life, but in fact the HTC Desire battery life is not that good.
Sure, it is not terrible. However, it is not satisfactory when you read from users testimony here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=653496
And I hate seeing that pinkish color
Oh well, my first Android device ...
The battery drain from the screen is somewhat dependant on what you are watching. If you are displaying an image with lots of different colors, areas with black and so on, the screen will not use as much power as an LCD-screen. But if you for instance use a spreadsheat in excel or word-doc. where most of the screen is bright white, then the screen will use more power than an LCD, since it has to light up all pixels, whereas the LCD only has a few backlights.
As an exampel from a QVGA screen; black text on a white background would eat up 3W, white text on a black background would only use 0,7W.
So in real life, there might not be that much gain in powersaving.
Given that the HD2 has a 12% smaller battery and 35% more screen area than the Desire but similar battery life, I don't understand why the Desire needs an AMOLED screen that can't accurately reproduce some colours and doesn't have a true 800 x 480 resolution (more like 392*653 if you read the article linked in the first post).
seriously am i the only one that doesnt see a big difference here? i can hardly see the pink tinting. maybe if i look dead close to it i may see it but as long as its not soo obvious i wont be replacing my device.
nip picking springs to mind but anyways OP thanks for the information though.
I've just canceled my pre-order, no way I'm getting a device with a screen that distorts the colors.
This reminded me of the nexus one screen analysis made by Display Mate.

Yes i tried and it looks better on my desire actually. the colours are more warmer and sharper then on my TN dell pc monitor.
it is a tiny bit pink on the desire but its hard to tell because generaly TN panels are NOT accurate reproduction of the true colours.
matter of fact, OP did you try viewing that screen shot on a IPS panel monitor?
You guys do know TN panels do not reproduce accurate colours right lads? compare it to a ips panel and i bet you it is the same colour reproduction as the desire.
before slagging off the desire for having tinting issues, check it first. go to a apple store and use there mac to browse the htc website and see for yourselfs
Not slagging off.. Just want to make sure it is correct before I except it.. When i say it is pink i mean not far off the pink of this smilie . It isnt a faint pink which you can just pick out... It is pink.

So I am coming from an LCD screen to the Nokia's Amoled screen and I am curious on Amoled screen is the white supposed to be a "rainbow" color? Like on my LCD screen White is well WHITE no other colors bleeding through. On this amoled screen I am see like a rainbow of colors behind the white like reds, blues, etc it's till white sort of but not as crystal white as the LCD.
Is this by design and something I should get used to? I thought Amoled was supposed to be better...

Whites on Amoled appear to be off-white. It's been this way with every Amoled device. I've never seen it to appear "rainbow" colored.
Amoled produces richer more saturated colors and outstanding black levels.
LCD and SLCD is a lot brighter than Amoled (hence the crystal white) but the black levels do not compare.
Before my 900, I was an SLCD fan. But Amoled with the clearblack looks like SLCD on steroids. Minus the lower white levels. Of course this is just my opinion.
So it's possibly just the ultra saturation bleeding through the "whites" that give it the "rainbow" effect. I don't know how else to to describe it. White is simply no white but like a multi spectrum white with other colors bleeding through.
Looking at mine right now the white looks pretty darn white.
The thing I have noticed is for instance when I bought a samsung focus I was torn between it and two HTC Devices... I forget the names. Both were SLCD. I just COULD NOT get past the washed out look of the HTC devices over the samsung.
The nokia is even richer in color than the samsung.

Agreed - I've had the Focus, HD7s, and now the Nokia 900 and the Nokia is so far my favorite. I feel I should point out that the 'Nokia Blue' theme is sharper than the default windows phone blue theme, making the other devices appear washed out when in fact it's the correct color.
But the ability to use the device outdoors was a huge factor in my selection, certainly.
I like all the colors in the amoled except white. White really looks washed out compared to LCD screens and this is the only disappointment I have with amoled screens.
the benefits of an amoled are color saturation, deep rich blacks, and energy consumption on non-white backgrounds
SLCD create more "accurate" colors, that some see as washed out - generally are a bit brighter (lumens) and more white whites
the amoled produce off whites - if you compare the two, but you should not really notice it on an amoled unless you compare it to a true white
also, off angles can produce a slight blue hue to the whites
to each his own - I prefer the amoleds blacks (with the WP7 metro themes), to the washed out colors of an SLCD - but that does not mean you or someone else will too
could it be that your screen might be dirty?
i know on mine if i have some water or oil on the screen it will create a prism effect, which will rainbow the colors, especially with a white screen.
personally i haven't seen whites get a rainbow effect, but they are a little dim, which could be partly due to the screen tech (amoled) and could also be the hardware dimming them intentionally to save on battery (white is a battery killer on amoled screens)
but the inky blacks and pop of color from amoled makes me not really care, as the screen looks brilliant.
and the clearblack display on the nokia is great in the sun.
rainbow colors are only suppose appear on pentile displays. this phone has a true rgb screen so i dont see why

AMOLED does not inherently have dim whites. Samsung just programs a dimming condition into the firmware on some its AMOLED panels that make it dim the brightness based on the % of white pixels on the screen (as a sneaky way to improve battery). The Focus S has an extra setting that lets you disable this, but the L900 does not have that setting.

A dim AMOLED screen also helps prolong the panel life span a lot. AMOLED screens are extremely prone to burn in. Avoid extreme brightness and avoid leave screen on for extended period.
Just remember this: it is very easy to bump up a screen's brightness (brighter back light on LCD) but it is extremely difficult to produce true blackness on a screen. The strength of AMOLE is the true black because it has no back light. Each pixels emit light. Darker black = higher contrast. No LCD can ever match the black level of an AMOLED screen.

i wouldnt keep saying that lol, htcs IPS SLD 2 can almost match against the blacks of a super amoled and has better colors all around without having to be pentile. unless you were to compare side to side you would be completely happy with the blacks on the one x.
edit: http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/05/htc-one-x-vs-one-s/ compare the blacks, barely a difference unless you were looking hard
i would go with the ips slcd 2 anyday considering no burn, great viewing angles, great battery life especially whites and cloes to as good battery life on blacks, visable outdoors, realistic looking colors/not over saturated, etc. its a balance between good blacks, and good whites. still wouldnt touch the one x though

I most definitely have. from samsungs first amoled screens the behold 2. and both gens of galaxy s.
and i take it you have used the one x? no? since its the only phone with the IPS SLCD "2". not talking about regular SLCD, i have the amaze and the blacks look like crap.
almost every reviewer that has had their hands on nearly every android handset has stated its the best screen they have seen. just my 2 cents.
LCD is growing, OLED is still failing with screen burn.
also, im no htc fanboy (anymore). i really want the lumia 900 actually
Any reviewer says SLCD2 is better or equal to AMOLED has no clue what they are talking about. For the most part, they equal high brightness to better display. Read those reviews carefully. They are probably the same idiots who prefer LCD TVs to Plasma TVs. They made no scientific measurements of the contrast ratio of the screens. So, basically they are simply talking out of their a**.
Yes, LCD has more accurate colors. But it can never have better or equal blacks. There is no way to make LCD panel to block backlight completely.

I guess almost every reviewer that has reviewed this phone talks out of their ass, technobuffalo, engadget, phonedog, telegraph? lol, nearly every review that i have read said that. people who love the galaxy s 2, and both aaron from phonedog and john from technobuffalo used the note as their daily and preferred the one x screen.
just because the blacks are one notch off doesnt mean it's not superior. considering it will have better battery life, much more accurate colors, sharper images (when compared to pentile especially), no screen burn (plasma tvs have that horribly, so id stick with my lcd tv). blacks arent the most important color on a phone lol, and i never said they are better or as good. they are pretty damn close though. especially for being a LCD. after seeing screen burn on plasma tvs and oled screen its hard to say id rather have one. people who want a little bit more black screens are okay with screen burn?
and horrible whites?
also, people who dont stay in a cave all day. the ones who go out side, ips is far superior lol considering you have grea viewing angles and its completely viewable outside.
compared to the galaxy nexus the blacks almost looks exactly the same.
i would rather have amoled screen on wp7, but on android i would probably rather have the sld2
http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/13/lg-renames-optimus-lte-to-optimus-true-hd-lte-disses-samsungs/
look at this photo: http://i43.tinypic.com/2wn7jfd.jpg
you can barely tell a difference between the menu dots and the bezel. opposed to other lcds. it could be comparable to amoled defintely.
outside photo with low brightness: http://i44.tinypic.com/ipqgzs.jpg
still compeltely visible
overal its all about personal preference, but im sure saying that the new screen is comparable and would even be hard to choose from even over super amoled. i was about to ditch LCD honestly (my amaze has horrible blacks) before seeing this screen. too bad its not in other phones.
Screen quality better be left to those know how to compare, e.g. those who review hdtv for a living. lmao the stuff you quoted above.
Remember, contrast ratio = brigest / darkest. The slight difference in black level significantly changes the contrast ratio. Not so much on brightness.
Yes, there are magic coatings on LCD screens that make them appear dark then actually is. The problem is such coating could cause black crush or false contour. Of course those phone reviewer didn't test those important aspect of PQ of a panel, did they?

Not really something to even think about. OLED hasnt been seen on a mobile devices over WVGA resolution WITHOUT pentile, we all know pentile sucks. colors, sharpness, etc. we have HD screens with IPS completely sharp, great colors, etc. just my 2 cents
http://i-cdn.phonearena.com/images/articles/48137-image/100-Crop-Red.jpg <- pentile
you dont need to review tvs to know if a mobile screen is good or not. these people have had their hands on nearly every android/wp7/blackberry/wm6 handset. pretty sure they have some say, especially for engadget always hating on every company besides apple then says the one x has the best screen they have seen lol.
both AMOLED/SAMOLED, and IPS SLCD have 16m colors. except the IPS has better viewing angles, no screen bleed, able to see the screen outside, whites to look blue, etc. you dont need to be a reviewer to know which is better.
unless your like everything on your phone to be black, and nothing but black then i dont see the point of saying oled is better just because the blacks are a notch better..
on different OS i would prefer different types of screens. LCD would be crap on wp7 i think unless you used whites a lot. we have yet to see IPS SLCD on wp7 i dont ever think we will. on android though i and other people like having high resolution, good looking colors, etc. cant have that with amoled unless you like pentile. wvga doesnt cut it with android anymore
take a look at the nokia 701, has lcd with clearblack and the blacks look great one it.
FYI, iPhone 4/4s has IPS screen and yet it looks hazey and has the lowest contrast ratio among almost all smartphone screens. IPS maybe better than other LCD screens. But it is still LCD screen. It is physically not possible to completely block the backlite. Otherwise, we don't need local dimming technology on high end LCD TVs anymore.
Just picked up an AT&T one x and I've owned an international one x for about a month. Immediately I noticed the colors were warmer/more yellow on the AT&T one x. Side by side, it almost makes the international one x screen look like super amoled on the whites (way too blue).
I put them at the same brightness, and the AT&T one x has noticeably better viewing angles. WAY better in fact. Also, looking at pictures I took with each phone, the AT&T one x has way more accurate/true to life colors.
Overall the warmer screen is far superior, which makes me wonder why so many people on this forum were worried that they have the yellow screen. Fact is, it's not really yellow, it's just that the other screen is WAY too cool/blue and not accurate at all as far as colors go.
Most people are used to cool (blue) colors on their screens - that's what most LCDs look like until you use a color profile. It's even worse on laptops.
I love my "warm" HOX screen, I'm unhappy just because it has a few yellow spots that don't seem to go away...
I agree and don't know if anyone noticed, the yellow screen has a cleaner pixel grid, you can't see the grid if you look close unlike the colder one
still both r still very impressive so no worries
Does the yellow go away? I've read elsewhere this is the case

I have the colder screen and never had any problem with viewing angles
My only complaint is that some yellows are going green
Though the solution is the app called ''screen adjuster'', just boost +5/+7 on red

bro, do you very faint glue "grain" effect when viewing pure white at an angle?
Nope!
Screen adjuster is excellent. I added + 6 to blue levels just to tone down the warmth, now the screen is perfect.
It's not too cool that whites have a blue look but not yellow either.

The screen on my 8.4in Tab S is bugging me, is it just me?
With all "super enhanced" colour settings set to plain and boring colour, I keep noticing a slight green tint in the central area of screen when viewed square-on, it's very subtle and seems more obvious with text on the screen, e.g. the Tapatalk forum listings. Also when viewed from an angle the display takes on a slight blue tint, despite reviews saying how good the angles are, it seems worse than the LG G Pad.
Is this just a feature of AMOLED displays or could it be a faulty unit (how?)?
I don't see it. Sorry.

There shouldn't be any differences viewed at any angle with this screen. Try this... in bright sunlight, with the screen off, look at the screen on an angle. It should look a uniform color - actually almost exactly matching the titanium bronze bezel... just to make sure there is no physical defect.
Something to note - if the screen is OK, it could be your eyes (not joking). The eyes can play many tricks - for example, seeing a lightly shaded box with text on a piece of paper that is only black and white - the box can appear to be shaded slightly red. That's one example, but there are many. And with the resolution and technology of this screen, there are no imperfections to draw your attention, like staircasing, blur, backlight irregularities, that you are used to seeing. It is a bit confusing to our physiology, and our brain does this thing called "patternization" that can contribute to us truly seeing something other than it is. This seems to be more subtle, yet more frustrating on a display that is so close to perfect.
I'm not saying that there is something with your eyes specifically. It could certainly be a defective screen. One way to find out would be to take a look at someone else's - also, if you have another decent camera, you can take a picture of the screen and look at the picture - that will usually confirm (or not) whether what you are seeing is there. Like I said, it's not you or your eyes I'm dissing. These are things I've picked up on over the years. In fact, it could ONLY be my eyes. If that's the case, I'd probably rather not know.
You can also use a colorimeter and software like HFCR to get the discreet measurements from different parts of the screen. When I have done this, I've found that there was no real difference in chromacity. Of course, that has always made me walk away thinking that the colorimeter must not be accurate. So human.
I would definitely be interested in your feedback about what you find because I've obsessed over high resolution displays trying to figure out what is real and what I'm imagining... it's an active area of interest for me.

Yes I have also noticed this. I've seen these green or pink tints on all the amoled devices I've owned. You need pretty good eyesight to be able to notice it. You shouldn't be bothered by it, they're all like that, if you can see it. But you'll get used to it.

Thanks Freshman206 and SrAdama, glad (?) to hear that it's not just me, I've had the tablet just over a week and still notice it. Any slight tilt and the colours appear/shift, green, pink and when angled beyond what I'd consider normal, blue.
Have photographed it and will have another go at getting it clearer but by winding up saturation the effect becomes visible in the photos (on pc).
I'm now trying to decide what to do about it, I have an LG G Pad which doesn't annoy in this way, though it has just gone away for a warranty screen repair for bright spots (not stuck pixels)!

It is probably the antiglare coating you are seeing.. If you have the coating on your glasses and check them out, it will do the same thing as your tablet... I also noticed it appears to have a anti fingerprint coating on as well, very nice indeed :>
In shops I also have compared 3 different Tab S.
All had an immediately visible green tint, white looks not white but greenish and a bit "washed out".
I find it a bit surprising that with other devices, when they have a tint (like the yellow tint of the Xperia Tablet Z), people complain much, while here, with this really apparent tint, people tend to say: It's normal, get used to it...
I would never buy a Tab S, just because of this tint and because of the, compared to other devices, low maximal brightness.
These devices are overrated.
I ran a poll in this forum as to whether people were satisfied with white reproduction on their tablets or not. Out of 15 responses 12 were satisfied.
We have heard reports of manufacturing defects such as yellows screens, muddy splotches in the middle of screens, loose creeky backs, warped backs and excessive lag/stutter.
These are not "normal" for this tablet but represent what may be a bad run of tablets that made it out of the barn. If you are experiencing the issues suffered by the OP, I suggest you seek a replacement unit. If you have observed similar performance from other tabs in the same store that would make sense as they are likely from the same faulty production run.
When operating normally, white should be white on the Tab S. For myself and the large majority in the poll, this is the case. I have also not read any reviews by professionals mentioning this discoloration and believe me, if CNET or THEVERGE had something to rag on the Tab S about they would have.

I just took a picture of a webpage with a white background on my 10.5 and sent it to my laptop which has software that measures colors.
The website background from my Tab S 10.5 measured at 255:255:255. That is pure white. This was a photo and not merely a screen shot.
Saw the 10.5 inch and 8.4 inch models together on display in a shop. The 8.4 inch version also had slightly yellow tinted whites when looked at directly, not as bad as I was expecting though. The 10.5 inch model had no yellow tinted whites at all, when looked at directly or tilted.
Mine has pinkish tint at the top visible when everything is white especialy when reading wikipedia

Yes the Basic profile is meant to be that way its not the screen problem being discussed here, if you wanted an accurate image then Basic is the closest of all the profiles. If Basic looks washed out to you then your used to looking at an oversaturate screen, if you were used to looking at calibrated screens then all three profiles would look over saturated.
I had the 8.4 and just returned it. I also had the greenish-blue tint when the screen was even just slightly tilted. More noticeable indoors with brightness set to below 40%. If I had the tablet flat on the table and walked across the room, I could see it too - screen only looked good if looking at it directly in front of you. As others have said, I think it's probably due to some coating on the screen, which explains why it would be more noticeable with the screen brightness set lower.
I've checked out a few display models at stores, they all basically look the same, though some were slightly worse than others. That being said, the 10.5" ones I saw don't seem to have this problem... if they do, it's definitely not as noticeable. Not sure if it's just an optical illusion or what, but the 10.5's look OK. I'm going to go buy the 10.5 one today, mainly for the size. I'll post again if there are any tints on the screen.

The problem was a green tint in the center when looked at head on not at an angle, seeing shifts in color when tilted is normal for this tablet. I would have kept yours if it was fine straight on.
My 10.5 had greenish yellow tint when looked at head on exactly the same as the op.

I was gonna return for the 10.5" anyways, the screen tint wasn't part of that decision, but I certainly won't miss it, heh.
Mine it is extremelly yellow! I hate this bug... It happends to me every 10 minutes, i need to restart every time to revert this.
Hey everyone,
I got my black AT&T Note 4 earlier today. I noticed the lower half of the screen is slightly darker, and has a slight pinkish tint on a white screen.
I do notice it in some apps, like Kindle when readinga book. Top of screen is slightly brighter, and when background is white there's a very slight pink tint.
Is that normal? Or should brightness be uniform and no tint?
EDIT: I added a photo. It's not a good photo but you can see how one side is tinted differently. In the photo the brighter top looks greenish but in real life it's not green. You can also the slight pinkish tint in the bottom half, which is the left side of the photo.
I wouldn't want to comment based on the image you uploaded directly since how a camera captures a digital display is much different than what the naked eye will see. If the picture on the panel is not consistent and appears polarized in any way, I would consider that to be faulty. Get it replaced.
Galaxy Note 4 (pink tint lower screen)
Hi there,
I have also noticed a pink tint on the lower half of the screen on new Samsung Galaxy Note 4.
As i intend to do a lot of drawing on this device the tint is unacceptable.
I wonder if there is a way to calibrate the display?
I had this issue with my Galaxy S3 display. I had at&t exchange it.
Have this same issue on my Note 4. Posted some pics over in the thread on this topic for the Note 3 before I thought to check here. Basically there's a brightness and gamma gradient from top to bottom. The top half is perfect and the bottom half gradually fades to a point where you lose the first 8-9 squares on the lagom.nl black level test.
This one emphasizes the black crush, which can be visible in video content on a dark screen (and makes dark colored backgrounds fade to black towards the bottom):
And here's one on a white background. At first it seems like a white point issue (which I would tolerate since it's common on IPS as well), but it's a brightness gradient:
Between this and the fact that AT&T disabled the slider for auto brightness I'm a little frustrated with this supposed best smartphone display ever (I realize this second issue isn't Samsung's fault, but the auto brightness is unusable without that feature). I bought the phone at Best Buy which is mostly out of stock right now so an exchange isn't likely, assuming they even take this seriously as an issue.
My note 4 does not display this issue.
No issues here. Display looks very consistent.

Have you tried a dark background in a dark room? For me it wasn't that obvious until I did this (was messing around in Sketchbook). If the majority of screens are better than mine I'll definitely be trying to get a replacement as this is bothering me.
I just installed Lux to resolve my backlight issue and its settings menu background fades nearly entirely to black at the bottom.
*Edit: So far it sounds like this is an anomaly. You would expect places like Anandtech to report on it if they'd seen that amount of variation. I'm going to have a good time trying to convince someone at BB that this is a real defect though.
Erica Griffin talks about this issue in her Note 4 review, around the 20 min mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OyNWrQJzMY
I got a replacement and it's perfect. No pink tint.
So, if you have the tint return it. Not all Note 4s are like that.

Thanks, that was quite helpful. I think in general it's easier to trust reviews on retail-purchased devices over mainstream reviews with PR department selected units.
I went to BB today and looked at the display units. All perfect, but then that's not surprising (every company gives their display/review units a second QC pass, even Apple). I'll probably head to the only BB in the area that has units tomorrow and see if I can do an exchange. As long as they don't make me sign one of those "no more returns" agreements I've heard about I'm willing to take another shot in the display lottery.

Good to hear! I'll post my results after my exchange attempt tomorrow. Aside from the gradient I am impressed with the display. Not as bright as LCD in daylight, but I was drawing on a black BG last night and noticed that it has deeper blacks than my Pioneer plasma.

Fingers crossed for you to get a nice one like mine.
Yeah, the blacks and colors are amazing on the Note 4. The whites are not as bright as the iPhone 6+, but they are fine and way better than whites on my Note 2. In all other respects the Note 4 screen is overall better than even iPhone 6+'s excellent LCD.
One minor disappointment is the very high resolution has made some emulators dog slow as they attempt to render at full resolution, i.e. PPSSPP and ePSXe using ogle renderer. Hoping the devs find a workaround, maybe rendering at half or quarter rest instead - that would still be higher rest than my Note 2 at full rest.
What's the color of your device? Anyone have this problem in the white version?
my note 4 has pink tint
I have the same problem on my Verizon white note 4 but on top half of display. Replacement should arrive by Friday :/
You can replicate this by looking at the screen at an extreme angle, obviously the ones that see green and purple straight on are screen defects.
I have a white version and whites are perfect and too bright at high setting. I keep mine half way. The whites are better IMHO than the iphones. The colors more vibrant and, the sharpness is ridiculously sharp. I dont see how they can improve it. I only thing there should be a waynto adjust the color saturation, because basic mode doesnt do much on mine.
My Note 4 has the same issue. It almost looks like the while balance differs from top to bottom, but it is really the brightness that is different.
This is a photo of my Note 4 showing a solid colored image at #030303 (very close to black). It shows how different the pixels in the bottom and in the top emit light.
