Just in case anyone was wondering, the Zune client has been updated to 4.7. I don't see any live download links, looks like you need to already have the Zune software installed, and it'll auto-check for updates.
Some nice changes, and the Marketplace for Windows Phone 7 is also live so you can take a look at some of the apps currently available. This just gets me real excited.
That being said, anyone wonder why the Marketplace would be open when no devices are even available. I wonder if devices will be available sooner than we think...
Update: It looks like apps keep getting added and added as time moves on. There were only a handful of apps 10 minutes ago, and now there are a bunch more.
Update 2: Download link! The FULL Zune Client 4.7 package.
Wow, good discovery. Updating now.
edit: Whats strange is a lot of the apps are already reviewed. I dont get it o.o

Well technically the phone has been in testing/use for months now, so i'm sure those reviews are all from internal testers, developers, and the lucky few who get to test out these devices.
awesome, I will be upgrading my software tonight after work There will be phones available in the US on AT&T by Nov 8 and sooner in Europe I believe.
Does anyone have any word on how the Zune software will check it's location? I have a US Zune Pass for my Zune 80 but I'm currently living in the Netherlands (the pass is run on my American bank account). To get the Zune marketplace to show on my desktop I had to set my computer location in Windows to US.
Now the big question is: will a WP7 phone just believe my american hotmail or will it do some nasty IP checks or SIM code checks? I would love to have my Zune account directly connected to my phone, so I'm guessing this will be the deal breaker for me.

Not many apps on the marketplace. How are they suddenly going to have 2000 apps (as stated) on the app store by launch date next week? Confused.
No worries, there are still testing...think about the Netflix, IMDB, Ebay, twitter apps, they are all announced and not there. I think we will see much more 21st ongoing...

Many of the apps are still going through the curation process.
Hmm, how do you see the apps? Do you have a device connected?

just go to the marketplace and click on apps.
Or if you already have the Zune Player (which I downloaded last week) Windows Update will give you the 4.7 update. I installed it last night.

What's your country set to in windows? Maybe try changing that and reloading the zune software and see if it works?
Changing Location setting to United States worked, thanks for the great tip!
I think you need to change your computers region to a country where the marketplace is launched, e.g. UK or US.
Installed Zune Software for the first time yesterday.
I like it!
Um, I've had Zune 4.7 for a week now (or more..?).. I just clicked the update button and it did it for me.. so don't know what all the fuss is about. There was about 200 apps when I checked about 4/5 days ago, and as of last count they have 409 apps. Which certainly beats the Zune HD count of like 30 in over 1 year lol.
A few of the app's aren't displaying their picture which is annoying, but it will get there. With 4/5 days left till the launch, I'm not sure if they will get to 2000, but they most certainly are doing a decent job of going about it so far.
Some of the app's look pretty useless, and might never get used, but the xbox live games look GREAT. Can't wait to test this out in a week.
Lack of gaming apps does bother me a bit though.
EDIT: I don't know why but the Zune Software seems a bit sluggish to me now.. it can't be my computer.. its an Alienware so it's fast. Don't know why it lags at times.. it used to be speedy.
I've read some other threads (namely http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=908293, which is the Windows Phone Marketplace for Windows PC realeas thread), and I have the following question:
Since we can manually deploy apps with several tools (WP Marketplace for PC, Tom's XAP Deployer, etc.) will those apps become automatically updated (or rather, would we be notified to update them) through the actual Windows Marketplace?
The reason I ask is because I'm just about to get a Samsung Focus, and in preparation, I've downed Chevron tool, registry hacks, TCP view, and all the free XAP apps I want, so that I can just plug my phone in and get mostly everything done at once. However, I'd rather take my time and download the free apps through the actual marketplace if theyre not gonna update automatically. Hopefully no one has answered this question in other forums, cause I've been searching for a while. Hopefully this isn't too nooby of a post. Thank you for your help.
No. No. And No.
yes yes and yes
hmm.. thanks for the answers guys

that is exactly what will happen
ps: you can download it to , but when it will try to update it will fail .
I believe side-loading bypasses some necessary "registration" steps, which prevents the marketplace from updating applications correctly. This is a great question though, I'll fire this off to Brandon and crew and get back to you.
I honestly hope it can't be, and never can be. Not for your few who will use this legitly, but for those who will install the XAP of pirated software and then update it freely. I know, I always seem like I'm so pessimistic towards this homebrew community, but unfortunately, that's the realistic world...

I am not the dev but there is a free GrooveShark client out in the MarketPlace so I thought it should get more exposure.
It's very functional and just needs a tiny bit more polish. The sound quality is great even through 3G.
MOD EDIT: Please post app recommendations in WP7 General, as the Apps and Games section is for app release's only as stated in the sticky I made.
THanks man. Been waiting for a GrooveShark client.
Awesome. Seems to work great over 3G though it needs a better way of adding multiple search results to playlists/queue.
Nice. And free !
The interface just needs to be more polished indeed.
Interesting. Too bad Grooveshark isn't going to support WP7. They are open to the idea so with enough support you never know. Keep bugging them via forums and twitter.

I think I might have it at home. Pity I restored my phone to NoDo not realising I couldn't unlock it again.
bah, I hope GS isnt deliberately flagging these clients if they dont plan to produce their own. Methinks they made a deal with a competitor :/
Here's the xap
I installed the xap file on my windows phone (E900 7.10.7720.68), but it didn't work. Loading failed with a message, "An error was presented, you have internet conectivity?"
So, I decompile the xap and found out, the server to get the grooveshark data from grooveshark's server is no longer working.
Can anyone use this app?
For people who really love music,
I would recommend the "The Hype" app for WP7.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1145616
It gives access to all the Hype Machine catalog. Hypem.com is a great & free music blog aggregator.
You can make a search, select the songs you like, make a playlist (which will also be available on your PC).
for instance... Here's my playlist (indie, The Smiths, Mountain Goats, Josh Rouse, New Order, Wedding Presents, Balmhorea, etc...): http://hypem.com/#!/eric_sc2
Hello again
I figured out a quick little change in the WMAppManifest.xml file that allows you to make your XAPs resume, rather than restart, when clicked on from the start menu.
Here's a demonstration:
So here's how it works:
In every WMAppManifest.xml file, located inside the XAPs, there's a line called "DefaultTask". In the Visual Studio IDE, there's little you can do with this line, but if you edit it post-compiling, you can actually do a lot of things. In this case, adding the term ActivationPolicy="Resume" to your DefaultTask will make the application resume the task, rather than replace it (default action). Here's an example:
Original:
Code:
<DefaultTask Name="_default" NavigationPage="PivotPage.xaml" />
Resumable:
Code:
<DefaultTask Name="_default" NavigationPage="PivotPage.xaml" ActivationPolicy="Resume"/>
This follows the same rules as the back button resuming, for example, if my dehydration hack is enabled, the code will resume instantly, and otherwise, it will resume with the usual "resuming..." message. It'll make sense
Should be fairly easy for you guys to figure out, and hopefully we'll see some developers integrate this directly into their code
For the end users, though, I've created a simple tool that does this patch for them, then deploys. Info and download over on my website:
http://windowsphonehacker.com/resumablexap
I'd say more, but I'm in a bit of a hurry. Let me know what you guys think, if you have any questions, etc.
Your friend,
Jaxbot
Awesome. Imma try this in a bit with some .xap files I got stored somewhere... jejeje

really nice find
Cool hack thanks again
I have been experimenting with some xaps with this.
I found some quirky apps:
- Facebook (u already know)
- IMDB
- NU.nl
- Daily motion (does not play the video anymore)
All others I tested seem to work fine. I did not test any games.
Its probably bad coding or not storing the back history or something.
Thanks for the tool. It helps with productivity.
I btw notice more quirky behaviour with the dehydrate on (I could be mistaken)... how is your batterylife Jaxbot? Is it fine with normal use? Or do we have to be sure to close the apps etc?
Are the apps stored in ram temporarily?
Does it affect general performances if you have 4/5 apps in "soft sleep" ?

If you have my dehydration hack enabled, yes, they're in the RAM.
In my experience, no, the performance isn't really affected (there's a reason for that), and as an example, I've had Twitter open for the last few days and I've seen no negative impacts.
So its an updated version of this one:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=999475

Not really. That dehydration hack allowed applications to stay open in the background. This method allows applications to be resumed from that state, directly from the start menu.
Eg, the instant resuming allowed Twitter to be instantly resumed when the lock screen popped up, or when you dive into messages and then click Back.
This allows Twitter to be navigated from, and then returned to, say, a day later, and it will still be where you left it. Nifty, I thought.
Does this new hack improve IM+ functionality? Will the app still have to reconnect with this hack? If so is this related to the lack of sockets in NoDo?

It has to reconnect yes. This is the way IM+ is coded. However the contacts will still be displayed on the screen so its less annoying for sure.
It will look the same as opening IM+ then exit by pressing windows button, than click back, the exact same effect... only now you will have the same if you press a live tile
Thanks for the quick reply, guess I'll have to wait for Mango for true messaging functionality despite all the hard work of devs.

If you use native sockets, you can get around this, but it means you'll have to code your own IM client, which is no fun.
if do this to all of your xap and dehydration hack.

Indeed yes... Unfortunately in some cases it screws up the order of the backbutton press and you will not be able to "escape" from apps or go back to the main Menu. IMDB, FB, some others as well will have to be recoded in order to work with this hack

Thanks for the post (saw it a second ago), but you need to update it:
This is for *current* Windows Phone builds, not Mango. Mango already has this feature built in.
Eg, if you have a developer unlocked device, you can use this on NoDo, pre-NoDo, RTM, etc. You don't need Mango.

Anyone know of any apps for mango that run in the background? Seems the only one I have is "tune in radio". Also where is skype?
Of the apps that I have installed, I have these:
AccuWeather.com
Evernote
Now (Samsung app)
Pulse
TuneIn Radio
WeatherLive
And I'm sure there are more.
And Skype will be coming. It was never promised to be part of the Mango release. The purchase of Skype by Microsoft hasn't even gotten through the government approval process yet.

Wait, carriers are dictating which apps can update and when ? Wow
My understanding is that T-Mobile has a special deal with Slacker for their version of the app, although I don't know the specifics of that deal, or how it benefits users (other than the fact that T-Mobile users got the Mango update first ).

Hello,
easyTube for Mango has been submitted to the Marketplace, but it may take several days to be verified before you can download it. To know what's new in the Mango version you can take a look at the pre-released demonstration youtube.com/watch?v=8zyHE5xHK38
