Just got my VZW galaxy nexus, and im loving it so far, but have noticed something odd: toward the top of the screen (about 1/4 of the way down from the top) there seems to be a very slight green tint, noticeable only when looking at a dark background (like the settings menu).
It's kind of hard to explain, does anyone else have something similar on their phones? Is this normal for amoled screens or should I ask for a replacement phone?
i believe it has to do with it being a pentile screen... well, 'HD' pentile, but still..
i'd say if you try an exchange, make sure you the test the other in store first.
can anyone with a galaxy nexus please post a photo of their phone on the settings menu? (scroll all the way down)

Pretty sure the setting menu is a background gradient with an intended color shift.
But yeah, mine has a blueish/greenish hue if I tilt the phone away or towards me in portrait mode. Straight-on, I don't notice anything.
yeah i am talking about viewing straight on
mine has this greenish tint slightly at the top right screen...
that settings menu then scroll all the way down is normal.. the color is not as dark as the top. I'm seeing greenish tint when on white background
I have a very light greenish tint on the right side of the phone on white backgrounds with text when at low/automatic brightness. The green goes away when I bump brightness to 40%+.
Did you try that?
Oddly, when I ran pixel checker, the pure white background has no green tint to it at all.
Yeah, at low brightness I see a tint/haze but at full brightness, everything looks beautiful.
Welcome to the world of pentile.
I see the same green tint on my screen. I thought it was normal, but I compared it to another unit today and saw that my display was both dimmer at the same brightness level and had a greenish cast and different color temperature than the unit I was comparing it to. I'm not sure if this is within the normal variance for these displays, but my phone certainly looks worse to me than the one I compared it to.
Both units also showed a green/blue tint when viewed off axis but with greater discoloration on mine. The second unit showed almost no discernible tint when viewing a white screen straight on unlike mine.

i have the same problem. Sometimes (usually after a power down and restart) my entire screen is very dark and has a, very obvious, green tint to it. I compared my phone to my girlfriends at the same display setting and the tint is very obvious (especially when i'm viewing menu, text messages, browser). When i adjust the brightness it seems to make it less obvious, but still there. However after certain power down and restart this "green tint" seems to 'go away' only to either gradually re-appear or just happen when my phone self adjusts to "automatic brightness" setting.
p.s. my phone also, had another minor issue of random re-start when listening to music (via google music) and adjusting the sound effects option. After that restart my phones display was significantly tinted and dark. Weird, Either way getting a replacement unit tomorrow.
Mine has a very slight green tint on the left hand side of the screen when at the lowest brightness and viewing a white background.
I normally have the brightness bumped up a bit, but it still bugs me when I have it low
EDIT: Checked pixel checker, has the green tint. I can definitely see it on the keyboard as I'm typing this though
I took my unit in to Verizon today for an exchange. New one doesn't have as significant of color shifting or banding issues.

yeah i got mine replaced the next day, all good now. No green tint, reduced banding, and much better viewing angles (the first one heavily tinted green or pink colors when viewing it from the right or left side, respectively)
Alright, got a replacement today.
No green tint that I can see, almost no banding and the colors don't change like, at all when I tilt the phone.
Now my nexus truly is perfect

Sorry, I find this very hard to believe. *ALL* pentile AMOLEDs change colours like crazy when you look at them at a sharp angle. It's a characteristic trait of this kind of display.
Pics from various angles or it didn't happen. ;-)

Some people are saying that my purple screen issues documented here:

So I am on my second Galaxy Nexus, and I'm on my way to a third tomorrow.
My first one was absolutely awful, with blacks looking bright purple (Phone 1: http://i.imgur.com/2bjUZ.jpg ) and now OTHER elements looking purple (Phone 2: http://i.imgur.com/1EI0V.jpg ). That's not all. My first one was somewhat free of screen banding, but this one is riddled with it in every menu: http://i.imgur.com/j2oxB.jpg
How common are these issues? I'm getting kinda fed up here.

Are nothing more than standard AMOLED behaviour. They are saying that terrible colors like I am experiencing are normal if the phone is dim.
Is this true? Does anyone have ANY color issues at ANY brightness?
Well... I don't have ANY issues at ANY brightness fyi.

Good to know there are some phones out there that look great all the time
I'm not leaving the store tomorrow until I am certain the screen is perfect!
When you look at the phone in the store tomorrow, and you go to settings, don't get scared away by what appears to be "banding" in the background image. It' just a poor quality image google has chosen to use as the background. See?

Wow, why the hell would they use that AWFUL image?
Tomorrow I'll mostly just be looking for purple colors on low brightness.
EDIT: Here's a new picture showing that the screen is still purple http://i.imgur.com/uaRwP.jpg
Wauw that looks bad. I'm currently struggling with a grainy (gray) screen, but looking at other nexuses that seems normal. On light i can however see darker spots and lines on black screens (including boots and black images) but seeing other topics crawled with the same issue I don't put much trust in a device without it...

Oddly enough, neither of my Nexus' have had the grainy screen problem, just this discoloration
I received my 2nd Nexus today after the firsts' volume buttons stopped working. The new one has purple where black used to be, like yours, but doesn't make the experience any worse. However, when I pull the notifications area down on low brightness, the screen dims further - does this happen on yours? It's quite annoying...
Mine is okay. Not perfect but okay. There is still a little bit of purple (not that extreme like uours) but after a few days you barely notice it

on low brightness the notification tray is almost an opaque black
Same here but top bar gets even darker when notifications area is pulled down, even when brightness is set to 0. Whites are a LOT better tho.
Edit: just noticed that when taking photos, the brightness of whats being photographed affects the screens brightness. Also, top half of pages on tapatalk are a lot brighter than the bottom halves, it's strange and quite annoying once you notice it...

The other day I noticed that my once stock white colored notification LED was acting strangely. It now is multicolored and seems to have a slight flicker when it goes off. I went through Samsung US support steps, removed apps, then full factory reset. Still same problem. I installed Light Flow and tested all colors. Most work but still with a bit of a flicker. White is not working. It displays in three colors, yellow pink and green/blue? I suppose my LED has broken. Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a solution? Samsung US will not support the repair as it is an international GSM phone.
Thank you.

Yeah white isn't really white, its a combination of three colors. Its normal.. no biggie
Well mine is also like that..

I have had my phone since January and it was always a white notification. My old Nexus One was also always a plain white notification. I am pretty sure thats what stock Android intends it to be. The multicolored just started. Either way Light Flow when set to White should display a white notification but it cannot. I am almost certain my LED is defective. Anyone else?

I sure wish my LED could be fixed. <head down>
Everything you describe is normal.
You probably just never noticed it before.
I actually did notice it and that is why I have posted here. The notification light is supposed to be white. Not multicolored. I know this phone like the back of my hand. The led has changed.
Mine has been like exactly what you've described on both Nexus' that I've owned.

It's a tri-colored LED (red, green, blue).
It displays different colors by mixing those 3 primary colors.
To get white, it mixes all 3.
The 3 LED's aren't close enough together, so around the edges you'll see the individual colors, but in the center it will appear white.
At certain distances/angles/lighting conditions, it can appear almost fully white.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDrYDjXThLc
If you insist that it was pure white before, then somehow you had a white LED and it has transformed into a RGB LED.
I'm pretty sure no Galaxy Nexus's were shipped with a white LED, and certainly not ones that can transform.
AFAIK
The notification LED at the bottom of the phone has always been a 3 color LED. Red, green and blue. To get white it turns on all 3. Other colors are variations on a theme.
Thank you, terryhau.
My notification light does not look like it does in that video. It is now mostly pink with a green hue no the bottom portion and a purple/blue color in the top left hand portion. It DID NOT used to be like this.
I guess I need to post a pic somehow.
Maybe something like an update or .apk has changed the behavior of the LEDs like reduced the output which would explain why you now see all 3 colors instead of white.

The video shows that it is not pure white, but a mixture of colors. Kind of hard to see because of the bad camera.

Yes. And in the video it shows what my led looked like about three days ago. It no longer displays that way. Now the three colors are glaringly obvious with a bit of a flicker as it fades out.
I am having the same issue. I have a galaxy nexus from sprint and the play store. the sprint one is perfect. all colors requiring a mix of colors show perfectly like pink, magenta, lime etc. However the play one does not. its almost like its off center so with lime you will see a bit of green and then orange on one side. Pink is slightly pink on one section then almost white every where else. Purple is purple and then has a nice section of blue on one edge.
So my question is those who have replaced your screen is the led attached to it or is it part of the speaker daughter board?
My led is darned close to white (accepting Newton's physical laws etc.). I'm thinking that if yours has changed then perhaps it's damaged, but perhaps your rom settings have (been) changed and your notification colour is now set differently (by default). What rom are you using?
I'm using CM9, which nominally allows me to have notifications in different colours for different apps. I find when I pick colours from the chooser, though I'm meant to have complete control over the colour, in reality I can get white, red, blue, green, and different rotations of rainbows.
Clarification: when I say I can get 'red, blue, and green', I mean properly: I get a solid circle of whichever one of those colours I'm aiming for. But anything else (e.g. yellow, orange, cyan, magenta, lilac, etc.) will be a the chosen colour in a small part of the circle, and an array of all the other colours elsewhere in the rest of the circle.
i can get all those colors too... but only on a portion of the window. white will show green, blue and pink on the side.. but not just around the edges. I think this is what the OP was talking about. I honestly do not think its a software issue as i am running lightflow on both of my nexus's and one is has run cm9 and AOKP witht he same results. It has to be a hardware issue. So if any one can answer this, is the LED attached to the screen or the lower speaker daughter board?
Hi, I have a Problem with Red Colour on my Gnex.
When I use Vodoo colour test patterns, When I switch to Red I have stripes int the red field. This only happens with Red color.
I never noticed that before, can be that this was there since i have this device (since release) or it is there since a few weeks.
Can somebody check if this is normal or if my device has a problem with display!?
I'm on Jelly bean already tried different kernels, also with color improvement. seems to be also with stock!
When I make a screenshot, and have a look on it on a normal PC screen, then the Red color is completely ok.
So iassume that something with my Gnex screen is wrong. Would be nice If somebody can give me feedback!
Are your stripes horizon all over the screen? Yes I have this too. They began at the top and spread down over the first month of usage. I think its normal for this phone.
---- moved, wrong forum, sorry------
Yes, they are horizon. But red is the only color where this happens, all other colors are without stripes.
Looking a little stupid in some apps licke kicker for example!
Anyone else experiencing theese problems?
I only would liekt to figure out if this is normal or if it is a defect!
I also have this issue, it happens in all colors but more obvious in red.its annoying as **** when you start noticing it.when i record videos its really obvious in dim light. Im just glad im not the only one.:/

I have also noticed this sh** , but my brother nexus does not have the same problem
any one knows why ?
My guess it's a side effect of the pentile matrix. AMOLED screens have a significantly lower life span than your traditional LCD screen and does degrade with time. This is also noticed in how the color balance gets very off with time (and does pretty dramatic changes over just the span of 1 month!), usually colors meant to be neutral looks very ugly green-tinted.
As for my screen? I noticed it in all the primary colors. Red was for sure had most visible "banding" but when I looked closely I noticed it as well in the green and blue as well (green being the least visible).
My Gnex is a year and a few months old as I've had it since February last year.
same thing happened to my screen in about 1_2 weeks when I got my phone. All colors were affected, but red is the most obvious. Pentile is ****

But why my brother's nexus is still ok ? although he bought his nexus before me ?
So are you saying that any pentile screen would face this ?

Do you really need someone to point out that not all screens are made equal? If it drives you to distraction, root and install Trinity Kernel or Franco's Kernel (which has Trinity's Contrast) they have a plethora of colour options.
I run a very icy-white colour on my Nexus.
Faint dark spot/speckles on dark screens and low brightness? I just noticed that if I am looking at a dark screen there are some black spots... anyone else have that? It's only visible on dark screens and is more visible the lower the brightness.

This is normal with AMOLED screens. S3 and PS Vita have the same issue. Don't worry, nobody has a perfect AMOLED screen.

They said it's definitely a defect and should not be there. Monday they are getting more in and I will get it replaced then... It's so hard to see unless its a dark room and with low brightness, but I usually always use the lowest brightness in dark rooms so it shall be replaced hehe.
Oh boy I had this happen on my s2 and even have this blue tint at the top of my phone that is always there.. Hope this doesn't happen on my note 2
