Hello all,
I've been poking and prodding my new USA GSM Galaxy Nexus all day and I noticed something: the screen seems to have a dynamic contrast function, similar to that of new TVs. I would like to turn this function off, although I don't see anything in the stock ROM to do this.
NOTE: I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT "AUTOMATIC BRIGHTNESS".
I want to see if anyone else can reproduce this or if it's just me.
Turn off "Automatic brightness"
Set your phone to 100% brightness.
Hold your Galaxy Nexus in portrait mode.
Go to this page in your browser on your Galaxy Nexus:
http://www.samsung.com/us/
(make sure to request the desktop site and not the mobile site in your browser of choice)
Scroll down to the bottom of the page and zoom into the black section with all the links. Zoom in as far as you can. If you're using Chrome, the words "Who We Are" should go across the length of your screen.
Scroll your screen so the words "Who We Are" is at the top of the screen and no white background is present at the top of the screen. The lettering should be pure white. Remember where they are.
Slowly scroll the page up by swiping your finger down the screen so that you gradually see more of the white background and less of the black background until the black background completely disappears off the bottom of the screen.
Swipe back up so that the words "Who We Are" are in the same vertical position they were in Step 6.
Repeat steps 6-8 multiple times at a faster rate. As you keep scrolling, watch the brightness of the screen and/or the whiteness of the words "Who We Are". When you first start to see white, the white will be white, but when more white starts to take over the screen, the phone switches to a less-intense white. (I'm assuming to save battery)
Is anyone else experiencing this?
download supercurio's voodoo mod sequel, the displayexpert beta in the voodomods forum. there is an option to turn off the dynamic brightness limiter. works perfectly!
This comes up once in a while, and many people say they see this issue. But I just can't see it! The sgs2 has the option to turn this off, but nexus doesn't.
Is this available in the kernel code to view and tweak,or is it closed?

Are you considering adding this into AOSP and letting Google know, or just tweaking/adding to other custom ROMs? Or just curious?

I'm not really a dev in any sense, but would like to see if this function is in the kernel and not hidden. If its not hidden then I'd imagine someone would have added an on/off option by now. So I'm not the person to handle this. My ability is at most compiling my own kernel with a little code change, at most, unfortunately.
Yeah. There is some kind of brightness limiter like plasmas have it too to meet energy star standards. Its a lot less noticeable on a phone screen and probably helps with power management. It can be a bummer on plasma watching hockey or movies like ice age. I would gather there is a way to tweak it. On plasma, no go.

Hmmm? I have an LG plasma TV and I can turn off all the dynamic stuff fine. It's in an Advanced menu on my TV.

all plasmas can turn off dynamic whatever. i am referring to what is called auto brightness limiter aka ABL. i know samsung and panasonic utilize it in their plasmas. no way to tweak it. there is something similar with samsung phones with amoled. bright images get toned down because all the white/brightness suck a lot of juice. i don't know if it can be tweaked on phones, but i think it can somehow.

Hi guys, sorry if this is stupid question, but i never had a amoled device before, so, is it normal white/yellow/gray colours gets a little bluish when looking it in angles?

Yes. its normal with this type of (see pentile matrix) screen.
There is also about 15 other threads on this topic.

can't find, my friend, i'm in gnex forum once a day and topics on top in the morning are in the page 10 in the night, it is hard to keep updated.. and search is not helping, but sorry if this is an oft-repeated question.... =o)
Hm if I remember correctly, the samsung galaxy s II has an option to adjust the saturation of the screen.. does the galaxy nexus have the same option somewhere?

I posted in another thread for others who search for a resolution to this issue...another user mentioned an app called "screen adjuster". I downloaded it and gave it a whirl, and while it fixed the color temp of my screen, it also introduced tons of lag to my device. I think the problem is that it's an app that has to run in the background and change every screen actively. An app that is that resource intensive can't be good for my battery, so I got rid of it. I've read that some devs are working on adding a color saturation/temp adjustment to their roms, does anyone have any insight on this? I've searched "display calibration" and "display temp" and haven't come up with any distinct claims, just speculation.
Inspired by Zurginator's cool Nexus 4 backplate backgrounds, I've started working on a live wallpaper interpretation of LG's Crystal Reflection glass process.
Current release: 0.6-pre
NOTE: I'm not currently working on this and don't currently have any plans to come back to it. It was a fun diversion for a couple of weeks. Thanks everyone.
Features:
Reacts to motion of your handset or tablet in a realistic way
Optionally reacts to ambient lighting conditions
Somewhat configurable (color of dots and background, number and size of dots, show/hide the lines in the dots)
Free (as in beer)
Free (as in speech, BSD 2-clause license, pull requests welcomed!)
Known bugs:
I haven't actually seen the back of a real Nexus 4 yet, so I may need to tune the response function once I have. (And I do have one on the way.)
Needs a demo video. (I'll take a community contribution here.)
Other TODO:
Optimus G pattern (apparently some diamondy thing?)
Point source lighting mode
Consider OpenGL ES
Consider dropping support for all API < 18 if Filterscript DTRT?
Ch-ch-ch-changelog
Enjoy!
nicely done! i was gonna comment on the other post about live wallpaper...beat me to it haha!
Looks really nice. Also I did modify those default values a bit.

v0.5-pre is built, adding an option to disable the little lines across the dots, adding a real icon, and simplifying the label used in the Live Wallpapers list.
You may need to uninstall or delete prefs for the old version. Definitely try that if it's refusing to load.
I've noticed that if I crank up the number of dots across on my Nexus 7, I can still get significant delays in rendering, despite using precomputed bitmaps. I suspect that the Nexus 10 will experience poor performance due to the sheer number of bitmaps to render. As it turns out, there's no access to a hardware-accelerated canvas from a live wallpaper, so I may have to rewrite the core as [edited] OpenGL ES (graphics Renderscript is deprecated), which would delay feature work.

After I went into the wallpaper settings and came back out the dots were there for me.
Seems to work for me even after clearing shared prefs. If you're setting it on a level surface or with the display straight up and down, with the default settings the display will appear black; more so if you are in a dark room (light sensor is enabled by default). I don't expect there to be a reason to make significant changes there to the defaults. All indications from reviews of N4s say that you don't normally even see the pattern; if anything I'm probably overstating the effect.
Thank you! It´s beautiful and i like it´s kind of sparkling.:good:
Can't wait to try it out once Google gets the N4 back in stock.
Dude thanks a million this **** looks sick on the N4

Sorry, no, I don't plan to do anything along those lines.
Incidentally, OpenGL, even with the help of a framework: pain in the butt.
UPDATE: Along those lines, rather than wait for me to figure out how to make that work, have v0.6-pre. It has some modest performance improvements.

Nice work - I can definitely notice the performance improvements. Liking the customization options, as well.
This is fantastic, thanks so much for this. Perfect wallpaper to match my N4.

Any idea how I can reduce the brightness level below the minimum? When reading in bed for instance, I find the setting to be too bright. I don’t have any other reference than my iPhone 4 which which has a greater range – e.g. the max brightness is roughly the same but the min brightness is much less than my Galaxy Nexus.

Any suggestions are much appreciated. Still on 4.2.2 but will upgrade to 4.3 when Wug’s Root Toolkit is updated.
I have always used Lux Auto Brightness app. There are other options though.

Great, thanks! I'll try those two apps.
Will give screen filter a try

I have tasker but have found its scheduling extremely unreliable. It will randomly turn the screen filter on and off over the course of even just 1 hour. It is super annoying to be reading something then all of the sudden the screen kick back to normal brightness and burn your eyes out.

You can use a task in Tasker to trigger a full screen scene overlay that acheives the same effect as screen filter. It's much more reliable and only uses one app!
I love this tablet! It's super fast, the battery life is great, and the s-pen features solidifies it in keeping it a next gen iPad killer! But I have one question. Is it me, or does it seem like the auto brightness is a little too dim for the screen most of the time? I find myself when playing games (mostly dark ones like Need for Speed Most Wanted) that I have to turn the auto brightness off and manually adjust it in order to see and keep up with the fast paced action that's going on. I also find myself doing this for movies as well & I wanted to see if any of you guys had similar issues.
PS, it works great when I'm in a bright area, as the auto adjust does its job correctly and crank the screen up, but I'm rarely outside with the tablet. It just seems like when I'm inside of a building the screen is entirely too dim
Thx,
Eddie

It would be nice if Google could do something simple like say, have an automatic off setting so it's not wasting power during the night.
Must Samsung lead the way with everything Google does? Seriously?

Yes. It's something Samsung has had for ages now. I mean Google took the time to create a scheduled system for blue light reduction, yet couldn't bother to do the same with Ambient Display. It's either on 24-7 or off.
The best solution I've found is to put a piece of paper or such over the top sensor at night so the phone will think the device is in a pocket and turn off the screen.

The best ideas are the easiest sometimes. I stay away from Samsung. I can't stand trying to figure out where they put stuff at. Why change menu structure even. I've tried several times because of the awesome hardware but never make it past about 2 months.

Cheers for the tip! :good::good: We've done my part now let's wait
I just got my pixel 2 XL and can't believe google has not enabled this already, it's a very basic item and a must have for many.
Pretty pathetic, hopefully once roms start dropping this will fix many shortcomings on the device.
As mentioned in an different thread, using Accubattery will display the battery level on the AOD. In my brief testing, Google reported the app as not consuming any measurable amount of power overnight, so no appreciable battery draw. Also, there is a root app from an XDA RC that displays the music you are currently playing/streaming on to the AOD. This is different from the existing "now playing" feature already built in, and at the end of the article HERE it says that almost any "text" can be displayed on the AOD. It's not the built in Google controls for the AOD we are expecting, but there is hope for customization for those with root, and in the coming ROMs.
