Need help determining if GPS module is defective - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hey everyone, I've been searching these forums and online for a while now and I can't seem to figure out what's wrong with my GPS. First off I am running AOKP Build 34 and franco's kernel. Second, the GPS use to work just fine... never had any problems with it at all. It just stopped working out of nowhere. Third, I am using AT&T's unlimited data plan for non-smartphones (don't know if that makes a difference).
Everytime I run Google Maps it shows my location but with a huge blue circle around it too. When attempting to use Google Navigation, it is stuck on "Searching for GPS." and never locks on. Now the weird thing is whenever I use an app that involves GPS, the GPS icon does flash on the top left corner in the status bar.
So far, reformatting phone, installing different roms, wiping cache/data/dalvik, using default kernels, using any of those GPS fixing apps have NOT worked for me. I'm starting to think that the GPS module is defective or my APN settings are incorrect (Which I haven't touched). When I pull up GPS test app, it doesn't show any satellites are visible either. Any ideas?

Stock?
teach a man to fish, you feed him for life. teach a man to fastboot, and you create competency. and less threads on xda.

So I reverted back to stock and problem is still there, guess it's time to send it back to Handtec to get it warranty exchanged... damn this sucks!

Good luck! GPS seems not to be the best on the GN!

[q] gps help!

i need help! i rooted my mt3gs and its currently running cyanogenmod 6.0, i have the latest radio i believe.
but when i try and use my GPS i get "location currently unavailable" everytime.
what do?
Unfortunately the MTS has a pretty crappy GPS chip in it, I have had issues with pulling a solid satellite lock even before I rooted/rom'ed my phone, with no real change with CM6 on it at all.
Best I can recommend is be patient, eventually it will get enough satellite locks to pull your location, it just takes a decent bit of time and a clear view to the sky.
I have the same problem, it is a problem with CM 6 right now. For me I can usually get the GPS to work by making sure it's disabled. Then I re enable it, load Google Navigation and try to get the location. If it doesn't work I close GN, disable the GPS. Then turn it back on and load GN. I usually works after that.

Tasker Locations Not Updating

Does anyone else have any issues with Tasker locations not working. I can't seem to get it to fire when using the cell phone polling when changing locations. I have also tried Llama as well and I have the same issue. I worked fine on my EVO and EVO3D but not the Samsung Epic 4G.
When I go and create a new state based on Cell Towers it will locate them but it will never update when I leave the area. I have also tried using network option but that doesn't work either.
I would like to know if anyone has these options working.
Thanks.
I have used location. but it was based on GPS. only issue I have had so far with this phone and tasker is the proximity sensor triggers but never turns off.
I've noticed that locations in general don't properly work with this phone unless you have GPS enabled. The phone is supposed to be able to get a location based off whatever cell tower it's connected to, however it doesn't update this information unless you do a reboot. For instance, my phone still thinks it's connected to the tower nearby where I live despite being 14 miles away in a different city where I work. Google Maps, Open Signal maps, ANY application will tell me the same thing. It's an annoying bug that's been around since the phone came out.
For me, GPS and network location services seem to die after being in deep sleep for a while. Opening Terminal Emulator and restarting the GPS Daemon by typing "gpsd" gets GPS going for me again, haven't got network location restarted yet.
I also don't know if this has been an ongoing issue or not, just started really noticing it on the recent EL leaks. I'm hoping Samsung gets it fixed soon.
That's pretty much the same problem I've been having. I have gone back and forth with the developer for Llama and he said that it's a OS issue that's the cause.

What i did to resolve this problem is i did a full stock restore back to eg30 everything. i backed up the Network location apk and the gps.conf file. I then rooted again and flashed the latest Calkulin's v.2.8 ROM and restored the stock files into the custom ROM. GPS lock is instant and updating to current location is a snap. this kind of surgery is not very scientific but it works every and all the time. Im working on a .xml that will take care of this instead of me cutting and pasting with from ROM to ROM.
Hello, I just purchased an Epic Touch and have had the same problem, where coarse network-based location does not work correctly. It also seems as if it's an OS-related issue since coarse location does not update in google maps, either.
The only temporary resolution I've found is to release and renew the aGPS state using a 3rd part app, such as GPS fix or GPS test. However, this is useless when trying to use tasker to switch between different location-based states...
Has anyone found any resolution since the OP?

Anyone in the NYC area have working GPS?

I have been having terrible GPS. It either won't lock in or if it does (on Google Navigation) i get the large blue circle around the nav arrow indicating that it won't lock in. I tried GPS Status and it helps a little but it by no means solved the problem. I also tried the app FASTER LOCK that supposedly helps the GPS lock in faster but it does not work either. I also tried the thread in the DEV section with the flashable zip. All of the above was done on Calkulin's and then after a fresh ODIN to stock rooted EL29 ROM.
After exhausting all these options I actually called SPRINT. They advised me that they are doing some maintenance on the antenna or satellites or some nonsense and say the ETA for the fix is 2/1/12. This service is supposed to be in the BKLYN/Queens and part of Manhattan area. In a nutshell I want to know if any of you NYers have experienced any problems with the GPS working properly. Please let me know because this is driving me F'n nuts and I don't really take Sprints word about these "repairs"

Mine too, but I almost never use GPS. I remember trying a while back and it wouldn't work (I'm not outside right now, so I can't try). I live in Bay Ridge and work in Manhattan and go to college in Staten Island.
I don't trust Sprint about any "upgrades" they claim to be doing. Since last January, they told me they were doing "upgrades" to fix 3G data speeds, and mine are still garbage. Better than they used to be but still garbage.
thanks for the input Fred. This nonsense is really pissing me off! Everything works great on this phone except for this GPS. The funny thing is that I don't use it that often but when I do use it I want and need it to work properly. There is nothing worst than being on the highway relying on Google Nav to get you to your destination and all of a sudden you get a "GPS single lost" notification.
Hopefully this gets straightened out one way or another
...i just took mine back yesturday to get a new phone mailed to me in the next couple days...apparently its a global gps issue meaning all e4gt have it at least the first batch...i got mine in october and my gps worked here in ny for awhile but recently same problems you described...most ppl report having better luck with a new phone...yours should b covered under warrenty so you get it for free...well ive heard some have to pay 35bucks unless you have insurance...id advise taking it to sprint and complain and demand a new phone...if rooted just make sure you remove root and if on custom rom make sure u go back to stock

So should we stay away from any specific sirial number? because i've tried the flashable zip and i still dont get a GPS lock... (Charlotte NC)
Running Calk's 2.8.1 and gunslinger 1.4.1 w/ gpsfix.zip
It is indeed with a lot of people. I have the same issue for a long time. I just recently got a new phone via insurance cause I lost my old one. It still has GPS lock issues. I can't say if it is a new model however.
What works for me (TO A POINT) is turning Wifi on for it to narrow down. Its really upsetting because I have my old Evo next to me and it gets GPS locks no problem. It is an issue with the phone.
I know that I have good company in regards to this problem. To illustrate my point I went to a Sprint corporate store in Brooklyn today and asked him about this GPS situation. To be honest he didn't know his ass from his elbow but the only upside was that he has the Epic 4G as his personal phone so I asked him to step outside of the store with me and open NAVIGATION and then MAP to see if it locks on. Sure enough, his phone wouldn't get a lock either.
Too make a long story short it seems that this phone has messed up GPS or maybe Sprints network in my area really is undergoing some repairs. Whatever the case is it is very irritating to me. I sold my NUVI GPS because my old EVO had some kickAss GPS but this phone has been a nightmare. I'm going to give it a few more days and call SPRINT again. I'm not going to be stuck with a phone w/o working GPS for another 1 3/4 years!
The thing is that GPS has nothing to do with network. Even if something was wrong with the towers and you couldn't use network location to pin you onto the map, GPS itself is totally independent and should work. Maybe it's the LTE rollout?

Your guess is as good as, if not better than mine considering you do tech work on Sprint phones. All I know is that the day is going to come when I need to get somewhere by car and the fact that I can't rely on my "award winning smartphone" to get me there pisses me off.
You bring up a point that I am interested in. Like you mentioned, I thought that our GPS signal is directly related to the GPS satellites and the only thing data is needed for is to load the maps. In theory we should be able to use a NAVIGATION type app w/o data at all if the full map was installed to our phone and we have satellites for the GPS?
Does Sprint have their own GPS satellites or does everyone on the planet use the same one? I have no idea how that kind of thing works.

GPS isn't touched by Sprint. Another thing you can try, in case it IS the phone trying to pick up your location by the tower, is to turn off network location and only use GPS. See if you can get a lock like that.
PS I don't work at Sprint anymore; my boss was a total douchebag pothead.

BUMP!
I can't believe that with all of the prior issues, that we have yet another basic device function that DOES NOT WORK. What's weird, is that it seemed that there was a time when it DID work ok, but tonight I used it for the first time while navigating (kept my in-dash GPS on for comparison), and this thing could not find it's way out of a box. Even when there was a GPS lock and I was driving on a highway (in NJ), it had me on back roads and was spewing nonsense directions.
I also have GPS Stats, and all of the other suggested 'fixes' installed, and this is just plain broken. I was on all EL29, though recently my Kernel was moved to EL26. I'm going to go back to EL29, but I seriously doubt that will help.
If anyone has more information on this, please share.

I'm here in NYC, midtown, and my GPS works fine, indoors and outdoors. I'll check again when I go out for lunch, but here in the Sprint office, it works fine.
I'm in queens, it works 100% of the time.

Is my GPS broken? (running stock jellybean) - UPDATE see post 6

Ive had my phone for about 2 weeks now, and the GPS is basically unusable. It takes up to 5 mins to get a lock, and sometimes it just never gets one. Even when it does, its not very accurate.
Ive read somewhere that the upgrade to jellybean caused this, and ive been running JN since i owned it, so maybe thats my problem? Anyone else experience this issue? Anyway to test if its just the software?
Id like to figure it out, so if i have to send my phone back i can. Thanks.
I think the Jellybean connection was more coincidental than anything else, since a lot of people were having GPS issues (on both ICS and JB ROMs) around the time that the JB OTA began rolling out.
Try disabling "Google's location service" in the location services setting and see if that helps. If it works, then try reenabling it and try again. That seemed to resolve the issues of most people who were having GPS issues a few weeks ago.

With it enabled, i just get the huge circle, and it says my location is somewhere in there. With it disabled, i get "waiting for location", and then "your current location is temporarily unavailable."
Anything else i can try. Like i said before it works, but maybe 1 out of 10 times. Even if it worked half the time it would be useless. If i cant depend on it then its really not worth anything to me.
Try this GPS fix. It worked like a champ for me and many other people.

im not rooted.
Ok i just called google play, and asked what i should do. He suggested i do what ive already done (check and uncheck google services, factory reset), both of which had no effect on my GPS. He then told me that a fix should be coming out within the next few weeks, and it should fix it on all devices.
So right now im debating flashing a custom ROM like AOKP or something to see if that fixes it. Im a little worried about doing this to a phone that may be faulty in the first place though. Should i even bother, or should i just wait the few weeks for a fix. If googles OTA fix doesnt fix it back to google it goes.
another update: GPS now works (not sure what made it start), but it still takes forever to lock, and is extremely inaccurate. Usually when you use nav, itll tell you when a turn is coming etc, but the gps thought i was over 100yds behind were i actually was. Even when im in my house, it has no idea where i am, closest it can get in down to 3 houses wide.
Im having flashbacks to my captivate - which didnt work at all - but if a gps only works sometimes and when it does doesnt work very good - then its basically worthless. Am i really going to trust it when i need it?
GPS status from Google play store. Install it and let it download agps data. That should greatly increase accuracy and decrease lock time. You don't need root to use it.
Hope it helps

try this download gps test from google play run then it should fix the problem 100% worked for me

GPS hardware failure...I think?

The aGPS works well enough that I haven't spent a lot of time troubleshooting, but sometimes I do need a full on GPS, and it flat out doesn't work.
I followed all the instructions for GPS Status & Toolkit, accidentally left it for a couple hours outside (fortunately it stayed nice), and it never found a single satellite.
I then installed Faster GPS, and tinkered with the gps.conf settings a bit, and it made no difference.
One thing notable is the GPS_DEBUG was set to 1 = "Error"...not sure if that is related, but even after changing that variable and confirming it stayed after a reboot, no improvement.
I also took it apart and the blue antenna appears to still be intact and properly seated, so I don't think that's a factor. Didn't see any burnt chips though, either.
Any ideas?

Looking at your troubleshooting methods this seems to be a software issue. Has the gps just recently stopped working or is this something that has just recently stopped working? Any new software updates installed recently? Applications? Etc.
My GPS doesn't work either; I didn't notice it until after I started using PACMAN ROM. It doesn't work with my Lollipop ROM either. I read around on google and lots of Samsung phones have this problem with lots of carriers. I too am looking for a fix..
I had this same issue. I had to get an app from the play store to fix it but it will erase/wipe your phone. I'll try to find the thread
It was called "CSC changer". It was free.
Again, it will reset your phone.

Roll back. Run it. Flash 5.0 again.
Remember back up your data!
Also there are several ones on the play store. I had to try 2 or 3 before one worked

I have a similar problem. However, my phone detects up to 28 sat but will not fix to any of them. I tried the GPS Toolkit stuff and FasterGPS but that didn't work at all. I even restored stock in order to make it work but it did not help fix my GPS. Does anyone know how to fix it?
