Blue screen when viewed at an angle - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Is this normal? I want to know if this is a good reason to send the phone back for repairs.
The phone has a warm, pretty reasonable yellowish tint to it when viewed straight on. This looks like it was designed this way. When switched to a 30 or 45 degree angle, which really isn't that bad, it gets a pretty hefty blue tint.

I just got mine today and I noticed this also, I also noticed the whites aren't really white, they are kind of dark or off white, is any of it normal?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

It's normal. Mine and two other people I know also have this issue. I'm not aware of any fix so I think that's just the way it is.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

I also wanted to confirm this. I have a Nexus S and my new Galaxy Nexus side by side and the NS whites are blinding compared to the subdued whites of the GN.
I am concerned as I only have to tilt my GN about 5 degrees or so in order to start to see blue on the sides depending on which direction I tilt it.

This is a common known issue. There is a thread about the "normal and what's not" regarding the display of the phone. Some are more relatively tinted than others, some are less. Depends on whether if it really bothers you or not that it should be replaced. Good luck!

Yeah I saw the thread but in his photos the phone doesn't look tinted at all. I may call Google tomorrow to confirm if it's within their bounds of acceptable build quality/normalcy. Thanks! It's really refreshing to see helpful people in the forums.

Thanks guys for your replies. I'm not that bothered by it so I'll probably just live with it. I otherwise love this phone. Good to know I'm not the only one with it.

Screen defects?

After a few hours of playing with the VZW Nexus, I noticed a thin, vertical line of pixels that are lighter than the surrounding area. It's really noticeable on white to gray screens.
Has anyone else noticed such a defect on their display? Would VZW exchange it? I probably won't be able to get to a VZW store until the weekend is up, and I'm worried that they will assume the delay means that I caused the issue.

Yep I got em looks like a faint checker board

I think that's just an artifact of amoled screens in general. AFAIK, SGS2 had the same issue.

Are you sure? What I have looks more like stuck pixels; a line of pixels that are firing at a consistently higher brightness than the others. I had a Droid Charge before this phone and never had this issue.

The Charge doesn't have the same screen, it was SAMOLED+, the Galaxy Nexus is just SAMOLED.
That said, I'd need a better idea of what you mean, or how you're testing it. But I don't think I see it, and I'm pretty picky about my display.
I am a little disappointed in the odd washed-out look it has, almost like the gamma's too high.
Anyway, Verizon would probably exchange it, but you'd probably need to call in and have them ship you one. Going in-store you'll be fighting with stubborn sales reps who aren't getting a single dime of commission off their time with you.
My first unit had that, my current one doesn't. Try for an exchange, mine is perfect, but took two tries.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Is there a way of fixing it, like how you used to be able to fix old tv's with a magnet?
i have the same issue... and i can`t make an exchange because i bought at USA and know i`m in BRAZIL. =/ have some way to correct this problem??
thanks
Judging by the crickets chirping, looks like the only thing you can do is exchange it.
Has anyone had any luck with replacements? I get the vertical/horizontal line issue at lower brightness, but even at higher brightness solid colors look somewhat grainy.
I had a vertical line and some random spots with pixel problems. It wasn't visible during the day, but at night those pixel were darker than all the rest. Got a new phone within a couple of minutes in the store.

Blue Screen Tint??

Hey Guys,
I've had my Nexus for about 2-3 weeks, and my girlfriends just arrived today.
I've noticed when putting them side by side that hers has a blue tint to the screen, and it's really noticeable when I put the screen brightness to a minimum.
A few searches haven't yielded any results, so was wondering if anyone else has had similar problems
Should I just get a warranty replacement through Samsung?
Here's a few pics (mine nexus is on the left) - both on romanbb's IML74K rom, with franciscofranco's kernel (both 27/12 release).
It's normal. Seems like mileage varies with these screens. Not good, not bad...
Man that sucks! My screen looks 10 times better than hers. Do you think Samsung would swap it?
anyone else got any ideas about this?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
um, i don't think thats normal . your phone shouldn't be completely blue.
now honestly, you got lucky because most of ours have a very warm tint, especially at lower levels that ruins whites.
but your blue is just super strange. honestly i would return that because it shouldn't be that noticeable ever.
Yeah that's what I was thinking. I have read about a hint of yellow, but this is a very obvious blue.
I hate doing warranty returns because its so slow, but I think I'll have to.

To exchange or not exchange, that is the question...

So I purchased the CDMA Galaxy Nexus last week and love it. I'm coming from a Nexus S and while I think the S had a better screen I think the Galaxy's is great nonetheless.
Either way before I purchased it I lurked these threads and saw that a few of you were having screen related issues. So upon buying the phone, I promptly installed a few screen tester apps to check mine.
I found mine to have quite a few imperfections while displaying an all black screen. Blotches and lines to be exact. And so I asked Amazon for a replacement.
The replacement ended up having fewer imperfections than my original one but they were still there. And not only that but it seemed that the colors were more faded on the replacement one too. So now I have the two phones here and don't know what to so.
Should I keep my original one and stop obsessing, should I send the original one back or should I just say screw it and send both back in hopes for a better third unit?

The franco.kernel app has handy color control options, imo thats about the best thing its good for, it eats the hell out of battery and I get random reboots once a day since flashing it.
The nexus s has better screen than the galaxy nexus super AMOLED HD lol u clearly don't know what ur on about the blotches and stuff is normal on a amoled screen if it is displaying black
If it isn't noticeable under normal use, just stop obsessing about it. I've noticed on a flat black or dark grey screen there are a couple bands (nothing major) but I can't ever notice them in normal use. Its just not worth my time.

Totally agree. AMOLED has issues in terms of a few production defects, but nothing major.
If it bothers you in daily use, exchange. If it is only noticeable when you look for it, stop looking
Thanks for the replies guys
Yes, IMO my Nexus S's screen has more vibrant colors than the Galaxy's. But that's not to say that I don't think it's gorgeous still. It may be due to Voodoo colors or who knows. I use the tweaks in Franco's app by the way, and that has made it much better.
My main concern over the blotches is that it could be an indicator of a possible early screen failure. Probably not however, I'll stop obsessing.

Like the other person said, it is normal to see blotches on a full black screens when in a dark room. Some spots are darker on the screen and sometimes you will see lines. Not a big deal to me.
There are some kernels that allow you to change the colors which will give you a great improvement. Like someone mentioned Franco's kernel and also lean kernel.
If you install AOKP and lean kernel you can control the colors right in the settings menu. For Franco's kernel you might have to by his app for that. Not sure you you can change the color's within the Rom.
I also believe CM9 might have color settings built into the Rom with the stock kernel...
If you mean some lines and pixelerror like thingys on black dark screen than I can tell you:
I'm with my 3th GNex now and all had this "errors" but I can't see them on daily usage; just when for example I'm in a completely dark room and brightness is on 0% and then it's kinda hard to see it too...

How do you feel about Samsungs Display?

I first found this forum when I got my SGSII and read about the yellow tint issue, bad colour banding etc. It drove me insane the first month because I couldn't get over it. I eventually got over it after some time due to it getting "old".
I hoped my Note II would have a good screen but it seems the tint can be found in all AMOLED screens. It was easy to notice the yellow tint in my SGSII but it was very weak compared to others so I were happy. On my Note II you can notice it (I think) if you concentrate really hard and it saddens me. You also have the weak lines (colour banding?).
So, how do you feel about this? Is it something you can get over and just accept that Samsung make worse screens but with awesome hardware? The reason I stick with Samsung is because I love them and I wouldn't want to choose another brand. But still, it hurts me when I realized that Note II still has these issues. I understand all manufacturers has their problems but we're in 2012, is it impossible to create a screen that is "perfect"?
Please no "I don't have this problem, my screen is perfect". We all know everyone's phone have some kind of this issue. Is it a issue or is it something you have to accept?
I don't have this problem, my screen is perfect. I'm saying this because it is. I don't see any tint or anything.
For me the screen is georgious. I like it very much, the screen doesn`t have that flickering sometimes the Note1 had. The colours are vivid, full and the screentones are custimizable.

It is indeed awesome, but the issue is still there. I don't like to have brightness on because of possible burn in, I keep it at 0%.

Is it true the Note II screen is brighter than Note 1?
I didn't have a chance to compare.
On the other hand, Note 1 colours are definitely more vivid and more awesomelicious!
And mine after 6 months, have a strong yellowish tint together with a burnt screen.
I'm not impressed with AMOLED's longevity.

I doubt his screen is perfect, I asked nicely for no such posts because we all know it's not true.
AMOLED is juvenile technology. It's definitely not ready for public use. Pentile displays look horrible, even at a higher resolution, burn in occurs incredibly quickly and colours are over saturated to disguise the quality. Personally haven't seen the colour banding myself but enough people report it to make it a real issue.
AMOLED is the way forward, but it is not ready for everyday use. Samsung need to put their heads together and get production rates sorted out. Only when they can start churning out RGB displays that are correctly calibrated and don't suffer from burn in or tinting after a year can they really consider AMOLED suitable for mainstream consumption.

That's the point... he doesn't even have a Note II... he's just complaining about a Note I...
Haven't noticed any problem with the screen because I am not looking for it. If you have to concentrate that hard to find it, maybe you should concentrate on something else entirely like going out and enjoying the day?

Yes. I am complaining about Note 1. I'm glad they solved the issues in Note II. I saw my friend's Note II a while ago. Indeed they solved most of the issues.
IM IMPRESSED.
But I still suspect longevity is an issue.
EDIT: BLUE TINT.

Won't it be possible to tune the colour of the screen when roms become more developed?
My SGS used to have a yellow tint too. Increasing the blue in the built in colour tuning app changed it to pure white.
I think a while ago I remember reading someone using an app from the play store to tweak the colour of their SGS 2 screen too. I'll try & find it.
---------- Post added at 09:17 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:06 AM ----------
Here it is. It's called screen adjuster.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.netmanslab.sa
Try increasing the blue or lower the red & green and see if that gets rid of your yellow tint. You have to be rooted.
Well, I have to agree that Note has "burned mark" stain like on the screen. Mine was the first batch for Malaysia. I also noticed the same stain like effect on the Samsung's Technician's Note. But I have no problem asking Samsung to change the display for me. After replaced, there is no problem with it for about a year now. Could it be that the first batch of display have such problem?
For Note II, it's crystal clear. No stain mark. I suggest that anyone who is not satisfied with the screen should either exchange the phone or have the display replaced.
Guess some had unlucky screens, but i really like the Note2 screen. And I got one white and one grey, both have np with tints, flicker or bad colors.
But i am not the one to speak after years off use tho, as I change mobile quite often. But Note i use longer then I usually use any mobile as the functions and Spen on note is hard to find on other devices.

After using the original Note for over 8 months I had no issues with its screen at all except for the very light black clipping under very specifc conditions,.And now almost after one month with my Note II, I can confidently say that this is the best screen I have ever had,no yellow or black issues,so the OP either has a faulty unit or he is a troll.

There is not a single AMOLED screen which is problem free. Be it tint or any other thing. It's quite true that people who are saying my screen is 'perfect' either don't know what a perfect screen is or simply lying.
And yes, my Note 2 screen has Yellowish tint, but it's on a much lower level than my S2 and spreaded all over the display unlike S2's only left side area. So I'm more or less happy with it. This is my 5th OLED displayed phone and NONE was perfect, NONE. Only which was my favorite and near perfect was Wave S8500 screen.

Trolling again? For someone without the note 2, you sure spend a lot of time whining about it.
If people arent happy with it, they should get it replaced or sell and move on.
We have two n7100's in the house. Both are fine.
Note I didnt say perfect because its very rare that something is perfect. But we arent going to stare at the screen from 2mm away checking every pixel.
And everything will have a flaw in someone elses eyes.
So going by the op's logic, anyone that says otherwise is a liar?

To be honest my screen has no tinting like what the op said.
Also, I don't get why people don't use it at a normal brightness level. If it burns in then have it replaced while it's under warranty. That's what I did with the s2.

Screen, One half darker than the other?

I've always had some pretty crap luck with screen displays. I have my moto x pure laying around that has a fairly solid screen it has some yellow tint at the very top but it doesn't bother me.
However on my note 7 the left side of my phone looks darker than my right side of the phone. I notice it more when below 60% brightness and in the dark. I do kind of see it in a lit environment. However I'm not sure this is even worth dealing with. I'm glad it's not a super obvious and dark pink/green splotch and hell even my 1440p ips (g-sync) gaming monitors have uniformity issues. Monitor lottery sucks... any suggestions how to somewhat offset this?
I am having the same issue. If you try the Tapatalk app in night mode. Mine is lighter on the bottom left. I would like to know if this is a real issue so I can exchange it.

Well the closer I inspect I notice that it is possibly a pinkish tint on the left side and a greenish on the right. I'm trying to ignore it as best as possible because compared to my moto x pure... this thing is FAST and snappy. However.... the question remains, is it faster and snappier than say... an Axon 7 or one plus 3? Which likely have the same issues we suffer now. I know on my Acer XB270HU I've learned to ignore the yellowish whites on the bottom 1/3 of my screen. Also it's the solid colors that will trigger more often than not. Which won't be as bad for me considering I'll likely use the blue screen filter during my reading.
If anyone else can chime in, let me know. Other than that... the phone feels, quite frankly... awesome.
Yes the phone is great but if the screen has issues its time for an exchange.
