[Q] micro SD card will work or....? - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have two microSD cards:
- 1st one came with my SE Xperia Arc S, and has 8GB
- 2nd one came with Samsung Focus (Windows Phone7) and has 16GB
...And thats all I know about them.
I pulled out the second one from S.Focus, and tried to use it in Xperia Arc but the phone acts like there is no card inserted, also tried the other way, with 8GB from Sony in Samsung Focus, with the same result.
Do I miss something here? Is there a preparation needed or something like that?

You will need to format the card from within the phone to get the right file structure.
If you need the data back up to pc,format card, then re place the data back again.

Is there a possibility that Samsung's card is not compatible with Xperia and vice versa?
Tried to format it from within Xperia but that 16GB simply not detected, also format (prepare?) options are greyed out. Maybe would need to format it first on PC them move to Android hm.

If both are "Micro SD" cards, and looks the same(size and shape), then it should be "compatible". If it doesn't work, I reckon the card is damaged, and therefore can't be read by your phone.

From settings did you unmount the card to format?
If card not recognized by phone then only option is to format with pc. Make sure you format with right properties ie fat32.
If after this card still not recognized by phone then think it is damaged.

Try using a PC to copy the contents first (if you need to).

My cards are fine, and working well on their origin phones, the problem begins if I try to swap them.
Well gonna try again, with unmounting first.

Finaly managed to do it after some research....
I will write how I did it, so maybe someone else can find that usefull:
0. Dismounted 8GB card on android menu and pulled it out
1. Backed up data from 8GB android card on my pc
2. Unlocked Focus card with SD unlock (thru the Windows Phone app)
3. Formated 16GB Focus card with SD Formatter 3.1 (full format with erase) on PC
4. Copied saved data to 16GB card and inserted to android phone - everything fine and working well
5. Inserted 8GB card to Samsung Focus (I didnt do anything before, it still has Android data inside)
6. To make new sd card work had to reset the phone to factory but it had custom bootloader and I couldnt do it via hardware keys (soft method was off limits) so I flashed it to WP7 rogers rom (a carrier official rom)
7. Samsung Focus booted and 8GB android card were detectable and working fine.
Not that easy as it seems, cant we just swap the cards eh?

Glad to hear you got them working.....
If the cards are out the box then yes they clean plug straight in .but if used before on different Phones which run different os then the file structure on the card will be different..... So neither can read the other card.

[Q] HTC Desire doesn't recognize sd card, please help.

Hi everybody,
I posted a similar post in one of the threads, but I did not get any replies. So I thought I might as well post a new thread.
I really hope that you can help me out.
My HTC Desire doesn't recognize the sd card (Samsung micro SDHC 4gb) that is in it. It also doesn't recognize another sd card (SanDisk micro SD 2gb).
I've tried to follow up the steps 'chippieuk' has listed in this thread.
Everything went fine, until I reached steps 8 and 12, because my pc doesn't recognize the sd card either. (I've tried to put it in two other computers and another phone, but it hasn't been recognized in any of them. I've also tried to use another sd card in the sd card readers and adapter, and that sd card was recognized, but it was a SanDisk micro SD 2gb.)
Here's some background information.
Something like 7 months ago I rooted my HTC Desire (in the process of rooting I partitioned the sd card) and I put custom ROM 'opendesire v1.5' on it. I was satisfied with it, so I never changed it since then. But my HTC Desire stopped working properly something like 6 weeks ago. Every time I switched it on, it went into bootloop. So two weeks ago I did a hard reset via 'hboot' and my phone seemed to work again, but then I discovered that the sd card wasn't being recognized and that has been the problem ever since.
I've, btw., (temporarily) unrooted my phone with a RUU (android 2.1). I've not yet upgraded it to android 2.2, because I want my phone to function well first and I will probably root it again soon (if I will succeed with my sd card etc.)...
So... Have any of you got an idea? Could it be something with the readers that I've used (that they can't read micro sdhc cards)? Or because I once partitioned it? I really don't know...
Once again, I would really appreciate it if you could help me.
Thanks.
Regards
If nothing is picking it up then you have no partition on the SD card, or the wrong one. Format it with Windows to FAT32. If Windows picks it up, then Android should pick it up. If it isn't picking it in Android after the format, go to Settings > Storage and see if it's mounted in there, if not, then mount it, if you can't mount it, then it's either a problem with the rom or a problem with the SD card.
Okay, thanks. I'll try that.
Is it, btw., possible to get the data that's on it back?
Not if you format it. To be honest, the only way you can get data off it anyway is by getting it to mount, which it isn't doing.
Yeah, true... I should have made a backup. ;p
Okay, I just connected my phone with its sd card to my computer.
It actually shows a 'Removable Disk' in 'Computer',
but I cannot access it when I try to format it.
So I'm going to try to format it now, using an adapter.
Let me know how it goes
Hmmm.. When I put the micro sd card in an adapter and insert that into my computer, it sort of reacts to it. The icons at the bottom right sort of move, but that's all. When I look into 'Computer', there are no removable disks. I really don't know how to access it..
Plug it into your PC. Go to start, right click on my computer and click on manage. Click on disk management on the left and see if the SD card loads up
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Okay, so I tried what you said, but the SD card doesn't load up.. I also tried it with that other SD card I talked about, just to check again if it really isn't because of the adapter, but that SD card was recognized.
Put it in your phone and loads up Android. By default, if Android detects a non compatible SD card then it will ask you to format it. If you don't get this option then I guess it's buggered and you'll need to get a new one.
It appears to be a USB brick....
See solution on this thread.

To be more precise, the fix is mentioned in the thread above, but is here

Had a similar problem myself, see if my little thread is of any use to you
As soon as I'll be back home, I'll try your suggestions. Thanks a lot, all of you.

[Q] best way to change your SD card ?

Hi guys,
I have a 32g class 10 sd card I bought to use instead of my 16gb class 2 but I have been facing quite some issues in the last couple of weeks
I took the 32g, put it in my win7 PC, formatted it to FAT32, safely removed it and now the arc doesnt recognize it... I just wanted to format it via the settings-> storage -> erase card in order to make sure everything is all peaches and cream before loading 20+gig of music in it.
...
All I want to do is finally transfer all my music (24ish gig) to the new 32g , and back up all my apps and stuff via Titanium Back Up pro.
Simply said, I want to have my 16g card data in my 32g one , with all my beat
Please could someone share some tips or links, I'll do homeworks and have been, but I have been facing so many complications since the last few weeks
Thanks in advance
Does your phone recognize another card properly?
Did you apply a volume name when formatting the 32GB card?
Did you try the 32GB card in the phone before formatting it?
I've done pretty much the same as you with a 32GB card (Kingston Class 4) and had no problem.
Are you sure the 32GB card is good and not a counterfeit?
Try formatting it again to with FAT32, default parameters, short or no volume name. Try copying your files to the card on the PC to see if it actual works.

Thanks I did put a volume name. That might explain it.
Yes the card already worked ( plenty of times ). I have been trying numerous time to transfert the music ( takes forever to transfer 20gig to an SD card , even class 10... ), and had mixed results that always ended up failing ( most of the times because of me... like forgeting to safely remove the sd card from my laptop made the card unrecognizable by the phone afterward...of course I just finished to tranfers the 20gig and was too happy to safely remove it... )
I will try that right now. thanks again
*EDIT*
Bah still same problem I must be doing stupid... SD card is not recognized by the phone. In the settings menu ( storage ) I cannot mount or unmount it and thus format it via the phone itself
That even after reformating it to default FAT32 partition with no volume name using MiniTool Partition Wizard Home
So number 1 priority is getting the SD card to be recognized again by the phone
**EDIT2**
When browsing the card with astro it says problem creating external cache , with root explorer it only says directory is empty. Still can't do anything in the settings menu
Obvious statement, but did you set it to primary?

It's a memorette class 10 :S
Or format it wrong, Arc will say it's damaged and say that it has to format it to detect it.
Should fix it, too.

Ya I'd love to get to this point ( which I got in the past hehe ) but at the moment it's still not even recognizing the sd card anymore
still formating btw....
How did you recover your issue?
I think I have a similar SD card problem. But, I encountered it after I did factory reset with SD card erase option selected. I didn't do anything after all. When I connect to PC, on the phone upper bar, there is no notification regarding USB. The middle button seems not working either.
Try formatting the card with this Panasonic SD/SDHC/SDXC Memory Card formatter.
That's strange why not just do a quick format in Win7 or WinXP, to FAT32? I use a 32GB as well and Arc has no issue with it. Coming from the 8GB, here's what I did.
1. Take off the 8GB from the Arc and placed in a USB reader.
2. Copy off all the files to your PC. I used WinRAR to accomplish this, just archive everything and STORE it (no need to compress so operation is faster). Or you can just use drag and drop plain copying its all the same.
3. Analyze the copied files and remove all unneeded bloats (ie. old movies u don't intend to watch anymore, clear out useless temp files, etc)
4. Copy back the files on your new FAT32 formatted card using the USB reader, then put in your Arc.
If you notice, the entire data migration is done via card reader/USB. Using the Arc as such will slowdown your progress and introduces unnecessary delays.
You can also use usb tool, it basicaly creates a back up image and can be restored to the new sd

[Q] Help! Play doesn't recognize sd cards

Hey everyone
I recently bought an xperia play but it has only recognized my micro sdcard maybe once or twice and even then I was still unable to mount it. I know this is a common problem but believe me i've been searching and trying fixes for ages, the battery cover one, repair in se companion etc. So now I think the only thing to try is to downgrade my firmware because the times when it read the sd card was before i updated it. So any suggestions on other fixes or a how to on downgrading would be greatly appreciated bare in mind it will have to be quite in depth as I haven't hacked Sony Ericssons before just a HD2. Thanks for your help
Matt
P.S sorry if this is in the wrong thread or anything like that this is my first post.
I just went through that problem it turned out that my sd card was "damaged"or something like that and the play doesn't pick that **** up at all, so I popped it into my x10 it noticed it right away and fixed it for me. I'm still not sure what the damaged part was cause I was still able to use the card in a computer. Try it in a different phone see if it works
Sent from my R800a using XDA App
Thanks for your help but yeah I tried a different sd, didn't work then i tried formatting both of the sd's still nothing and also tried them in different phones, I have no clue what else to try except downgrading and I don't know where to start
have you pushed the back cover properly into place - it has to click into place - I normally run my finger around the edge of the cover firmly just to make sure.
Normally the card won't mount or will keep un-mounting otherwise - don't know if it would say unrecognized. Maybe you formatted it in a format different to FAT32 - windows does it to bigger cards - try using EASEUS or similar partition managers
The battery cover fix was the first to come up when I started searching and i've been checking it's on securely everytime i put it on and whenever i've formatted it i've also checked that it is in fat32 but i will try a different partition manager and tell you how it goes
Thanks for the help
Tried it, still nothing
Can anybody point me towards a tutorial on how to downgrade or something because I can't find anything and I have no other ideas
Is it possible one of the notches on your back cover is broken and does not let xplay realise the back is on? If you could locate a friend with another back cover or test it in a mobile shop perhaps? Or maybe there is a way to make xplay to always believe that the cover is properly on somehow? Hope it helps
Under Settings/Storage, there is an option to Disable Safe SD Card. Try that to eliminate the cover as the problem.

Good idea i'll check the back cover now. Also I went into settings/storage and there was nothing about safe sd card thanks anyway
Since my last post I have rooted my play and flashed back to an earlier firmware. The phone now detects the sd card but I am having a different problem instead, I am unable to mount because it says blank sd or corrupt etc. I have tried formatting the sd card on my phone and it still won't mount, any ideas?
You have tried using another SD card right? If formatting it won't work, either you have to get a new one or unfortunately, send it in to SE for repair(whatever its called) since it may be the sd card slot reader that's causing the problems.Another question, did the memory card come with your play?

xperia play r800x sd problem fixed
I just went thru what your going thru and found a way to fix it
in addition to my sd card not reconised my wifi and for that matter
the top status bar were not working.
you will need >A working phone with a good sd card <
1-Turn both phones off <your x-play and the other working phone>i know you do not have to unmount but>> MAKE SURE YOU DO THIS to avoid frustation ..trust me ..
2-swap the sd cards
3-pick up the working phone which now has the sd card from your x-play in it <turn it on >
4-if you get a message on the top status bar <Damaged sd card> go to settings >storage>erease sd data
5- If the format worked then it will remount the sd card in to the phone and rebuild the file system in the sd card <if it worked then you are done swap the cards back>
6- <<if it does not and you get a unsuported files on sd card or still broken>> do not swap the sd cards put down that phone and turn on your x-play with the working card from the other phone >>
7- if your x-play is working with the other sd card then replace the sd card its no good
if 5 fixed it gg
if 6 your sd card is no good

[Q] SD card problems

Hi,
I have a problem with my 32 gb micro SD card.
It always worked fine until one day I one day I removed it and used the plastic adapter to save some media straight from the computer.
Now my phone reads the card (I can see it in My Files and can play the music and the movies) but cannot re-write the data (I cannot take pictures with the camera and save it on the card or update apps - which is really annoying because the phone always restarts). When I run the Task manager / Storage, it shows 0.0b/0.0b as if there was no SD card.
I tried to mount/unmount, turn on and off.
Do you guys have any idea how to solve it? Getting pretty desperate...
Kate
The only thing I can think to do is to transfer all your SD card data to your PC (use your SD adapter and plug card directly into PC).
Then put the card back into your phone, and use your phone to format it. Then it *should* be "problem solved". The only thing is, i think you have to be rooted and have ClockworkMod installed to format your card (the option is under "mounts and storage"). I can't remember the option being there in "stock" OS (it's been a while..lol) But whatever you do, DON'T format your card with your PC....I'm fairly certain that this will cause more problems than it'll fix. To transfer the files back to your card, you should use the USB cable that came with your phone, and plug the phone (containing the SD card) into your pc and transfer the files that way.......
Sent from my GT-I8150 using Xparent Green Tapatalk 2
I think you might have unplugged the SD card from your PC 'uncleanly', causing some errors. The Linux kernel of Android detected that, and refused to mount it RW.
In that case, formatting your SD card on the PC should be safe. But, instead of just formatting, I suggest you rebuild the card by deleting all partitions then recreating them. You can use the gratis MiniTool Home Edition to do that.

[Q] [Pro] Problem with new microSD card

I've just bought a brand new 32GB Class 10 microSDHC card from SanDisk, but I'm having terrible trouble with it in my Xperia Pro.
The symptoms are that, if I move apps to SD (using the built-in method in Gingerbread), they will start force-closing. Files stored on the SD card sometimes won't copy from one folder to another. The terminal shows "I/O errors". Eventually the SD card will seem to disappear completely from the system. Sometimes the whole device will spontaneously reboot.
If I put back in the original 8GB Class 4 card, everything works fine.
I am sure the 32GB card is genuine and it works fine on a PC (tested with h2testw). I have tried re-formatting it in both a PC (using Windows and Linux, and using native OS methods with various cluster sizes and with the SD Card Association app) and in the device. However I format it makes no difference.
I haven't yet tried a different ROM on my Xperia Pro (I'm using stock Gingerbread at the moment, although I have rooted it).
Do you think a different ROM might help? Or is it just that this card isn't compatible with the Xperia?
Default [Q] [Pro] Problem with new microSD card
:crying: Hi see you have tried the re-formatting option this is good because first thing people start suggesting is re-format option lol. There can be a number of things wrong and I have seen many post's with same problem as you(and after trying lots of options it does boil down to a faulty card) Even when the card as been tested. Not saying that is your problem but it is strange your old card works and also this being a new card so untested on other phones etc.It would be good if you could test on another phone although this can be unpractical I know everyone as not got a spare phone.
Also as you suggest could be the rom follow the link below this might help
Try this option link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010807 it may help:good:
With regards to moving apps to SD card I have always found using the app link to SD the best solution for me it as never let me down.Only thing with that you need to partition your card with minitool but it is well worth it because you can link apps with widgets without any problems.
Just a few suggestions maybe some others have some too:good:
