Can someone please tell me what is considered "normal"?
Mine runs at about 55 constantly, is this dangerous?
Hi,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1557494&highlight=cpu+temp
For example,there is another threads...
55°C is not dangerous and I doubt it runs constantly at 55°C,in sleep?when your browse on the net?when you watch a movie?or just when you naviguate in settings?
So,normal if you have this CPU temp while browsing or whatching a video, not very normal if your just naviguate in settings since 10 mins... (according to the CPU freq?) or if your phone is in sleep since 10 mins (if you do not download anything)->wake up and you see 55°C...
While it is charging?
The CPU temp limit is at 64°C (if you don't modify it),above thermal throttling,reboot...
And it's with stock kernel?custom kernel (CPU freq?voltage?),what are you doing exactly with your phone?

Thanks for the response mate.
I flashed Franco M3 last night and was admittidly browsing a lot before I went to bed and this morning.
Looking at it now where its been sat on my desk at work for a while its hovering around 35.
I suppose I was just looking for a little assurance my phone isnt going to break into a ball of flames suddenly!!!
Again appreciate the response mate, Thanks
Re,
Ok,for me no problem with your CPU temp, normal
Also, depending to the current ambient temperature...

In sleep, for example since 10 mins?without touching it?
Mine in sleep is at 22°C in my home (current ambient temperature about...24°C).
In extreme use (for example during a bench ) go to about 86°C...
In browsing about 55-56°C.
In light use (setting my home screen for example) about 40°C.
For example with System Tuner pro you can follow in real time your CPU temp (with graph).
Running at 1.42Ghz actually.
And in normal use I settled my CPU temp limit to 75°C (stock is 64°C),I feel that by increasing the CPU temp limit the phone heats a little less.

This makes me feel better!! im nowhere near that!!!
Always wonder on these forums and dont take this the wrong way but is their any other point than upping your benchmark by overclocking.
Do you have any noticeable difference in performance thats worth the loss in battery.
Thanks again

I'm just curious because what you said confuses me lol but, how exactly would INCREASING temp limit make the phone get hot less?
I don't know much about how that works (the nitty gritty details) but that seems kinda Counterintuitive?

Hi,
I do not know any more ,like I said "I feel"...
At the same CPU freq and about the same use I feel with a higher CPU temp limit the CPU heats less...that's what I thought noticed when I monitor the temperature evolution in System Tuner...Why?,Placebo?Not exactly the same condition?I do not look exactly at the same times (after a high load) compared to the stock CPU temp limit?...I don't know much...
I tried to reproduce the same conditions for both CPU temp limit, and I think I noticied this...But it's not "scientific" nor proven...
I may be an explanation in French but I can not do the same in English even with Google Translation...,too hard for me
And I am not a engineer in processor and I do not have large knowledge in this...And maybe, certainly,my explanation is crap

Re,
Yes there is a performance improvement it depends in what...
Some apps loads faster,my launcher is smoother (Apex),scrolling is better,etc...
Some people do not notice the other yes...
Even withe the "better" kernel, the more you overclock the more your battery life decreases, but it also depends of the voltage, governor and what you do with your phone...
If I run 15 benchs at 1.65Ghz for stability test (or for to show that I have a big **** LOL )...Bye bye the battery...

I get having it be higher than necessary to avoid bugs... but the 153mhz CORE slot can go to 90mV down from 8-900. That's 1/10th of the original voltage. Why would Google/Samsung ship it using so much more than what it needs?

Those are MAX voltages...and I call hogwash on the 90mV, unless you are disabling smart reflex. Then I would want to see some actual proof.
Lower than 70mV is unstable. I didn't disable smartreflex, but even if I do it makes no difference. Maybe someone else can share their lowest voltage for this. I'm sure I'm undervolting it as it becomes quite unstable if I input 60mV, so obviously something's happening.
Yes, they're max voltages, but even with SR it doesn't go below 886 or something.
I find that tough to swallow. Did you actually verify the voltage with a kernel log?
What's the easiest way to do that? I'd like to confirm it myself. Like I said, I know it's doing something because at 50-60mV there are instant issues.

If memory serves, dmesg will log it.
Yikes. A lot of output and no 'grep'. Give me a minute.

You have to disable smart reflex for your voltage settings to work. It isn't going down to 90mv. Disable smart reflex and then set that, I doubt your phone will run.
Voltage Nominal=75000, Calib=75---, margin=38000
Seems to be the most relevant. And yeah, I've got it at 75 right now.
And I've disabled SR as well, it doesn't change anything. And the voltage settings definitely do work witohut disabling it as, like I said, going too far down will cause a crash. So obviously it's doing something.
Have you guys tried undervolting that far?
And I'm doing this with franco kernel updater. The widget is showing the Core voltage to be 75.

thats 900mV and 750mV. and there is a large variation between individual devices. some can handle much less and some cant handle a tiny bit less. but undervolting too much will end up using more battery to achieve what it needs to achieve from working longer/harder to get there. 90mV without or even with smart relex will cause your phone to freeze then reboot.

Why? I know that underclocking would do this - the time to finish a task at a lower clockspeed is longer.
I don't see how lowering the mV can possibly increase battery usage.

no, you are right. i didnt see that you mentioned core. after looking at the original post i see the core now. anyways, at that low a voltage it will operate, but wont be fully functional.
---------- Post added at 11:11 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:53 PM ----------
anyways, i dont know what that app is reporting, but franco kernel can only be set to a minimum of 830mV. looks like a mistake or a bug in his app. im gonna email him.. https://bitbucket.org/franciscofran...e9aa9b26/arch/arm/mach-omap2/voltage.h#cl-184
It seems functional... I mean, clearly the GPU is working (and at that voltage according to the app) because the screen is on/ not artifacting.
Is it just incorrectly reporting it? Is there another way to confirm it? Dmesg was not clear.

check the link out that i just posted. franco kernel can only be set to a minimum of 830mV, the app is reporting wrong. its setting, but not actually setting https://bitbucket.org/franciscofran...e9aa9b26/arch/arm/mach-omap2/voltage.h#cl-184
So what is it actually setting it to? Because if I set it *too* low it still does give me errors... so how can it be both?

i think it gets set to 830. i let francisco know, we'll see what he says.
Alright. It's just weird. Because if anything under 830 is setting it to 830, and 830 is stable (because 95 shows stable) than how would 830 be unstable when the UI shows it as 40.
I mean, 90mV is kinda insane. It would definitely make sense if it were more like 830. It's just confusing.
Hopefully francisco can explain.

Hmm, then why does setting an absurd voltage like 200mV cause an instant reboot while I can set it to 830mV and it runs fine?

Yeah I can set it to 830mV and it runes fine. No issues until I drop to 60mV. I haven't reached a limit for any of them.
Hello everyone! I am very, very happy because i bought a Nexus 7 2013 a week ago. That same night I got home from the shop I knew it was getting root permissions. So i did the rooting method with WugFreshes toolkit and it worked like a dream I must admit. TWRP and Superuser installed in a flash.
After root permissions the fun started - Custom Rom's, Mods, Tweaks you name it. I am currently using Stock Kitkat 4.4 ROM with many tweaks:
PureGraphic HD
PurePeformances
AwesomeBeats
PureAudio
I have the Franco Kernel and it's great. I have had no issues what so ever so far. It's smooth, fast and responsive. Games run extraordinary fast, I can amp up the graphics without to much frame drops, this includes games like GTA SA, GTA VC, Modern Combat 4 and N64/PS1 Emulators (and yes i own the roms :highfive. Back to the Kernel. All Wireless adapters are working (bluetooth, wifi, nfc etc), and wifi seems faster. Battery doesn't drain very fast at all, even with intensive load. But here is where my question actually is ...
I do understand that this question has been answered somewhere else in the Nexus 7 2013 forum, however can someone tell me my question in more detail? Thanks. :good:
Q. My question is, between what cpu temperatures is safe for my nexus 7 2013 to play intensive games at (etc emualtors, gta series, MC4)? What temperatures should i be alerted at. I am currently running GTA Sandreas and emulators at around 50-65 Degrese celcius (yes that's right celcius us auzzies use the metric system :silly: . )
Also if i overclocked it to 1.7GHZ then what would a stable temp be while idling and heavy load? (thanks!)
(last minute edit... Also what CPU is really used in this? People say it's an undercloked s4 pro or something? So if overcloked back to 1.7GHZ it'll be fine? Right?...)

I personally wouldn't worry about cpu temp that much. All the developers of custom kernels will set the thermal limits to whatever they think is appropriate. A much bigger concern than the cpu temp is heat being conducted to the battery. I would make a point of keeping the battery below 120F and I personally don't want to see over 110F (around 45C).

The overlay thing I was talking about earlier was the cause for that cpu temp, it used like 2 entire cores to function, without it, temps are more stable, can you believe that the tablet actually kinda burned my fingers if I pressed too hard? That's insane.
Now, I understand that the battery's temperature is something important, so you don't ruin your battery lifespan, but how come cpu temps don't matter as much as battery's does? What's the max temp for these devices?

I'm going to "guess" and say somewhere around 100C for the cpu. Just a guess. 60C for the battery would absolutely be bad news. 50C would make me nervous. Also the cpu will start to get throttled (underclocked) once it gets up to a certain temp, And once it reaches the max temp the cpu will get shut down and you will have to wait for it to cool down before it will boot back up. I would worry about the heat affecting the motherboard and the components on that before I would worry about heat damaging the cpu.

Theorically speaking, the safe working temperatures would be the where the thermal limit is which is around 105ºC.
However, it doesn't work like this because heat spreads to other components and more importantly, it spreads to the battery and we all know batteries don't like hot temperatures since it drastically reduces their life span and charge capability.
On practice, I would say keeping your CPU below 70ºC which will result in a colder battery aswell is the sweet spot.
On the Overclock matter, I have mine at 1900'ish Mhz and my GPU is at 490'ish Mhz and I haven't experienced any abnormal temperatures while runing benchmarks. Infact, the temps were kept below 50ºC which is more than fine.

I think the battery burns like hell when you're playing and charging it at the same time, am I right? I wonder, if the cpu and gpu are underload, the battery will drain quickly, does this mean that this produces more heat to the battery? How does that work.

Hi friends,I'm going to share my experience of amazing battery life on my Redmi 1s..
What I did to get amazing battery life and better multitasking on my Redmi:-
1)I flashed the latest Mokee rom (Release version-272 MB) on my Device.
2)Flashed the Powersaver thermal config Mod.You'll find it at the end of this post.
3)I installed Trickster Mod Kernel setting APK from the play store and I did below modifications to it
a)Set the CPU max and min frequency to 300MHZ and 1094 MHZ.Turned on the CPU frequency lock.
b)Governer set to ONDEMAND and schedular to ROW.
c)Turned on MP-Decision,Set Multicore Power saving mode to 2 and turned on temperature throttle.
d)Set the GPU max frequency to 320 MHZ and governor to ONDEMAND .
(Set it to 450MHZ if you game a lot however it donot cause serious battery changes as per my observations)
4)Install greenify from Play store and hibernate most of the apps That causes cpu wakes (I greenified all downloaded apps )
5) Thats it you are ready to get most out of your redmi's battery. Please comment your experiences here.

i think he means that underclocking this phone to 1000mhz would definitely slow it down, rendering the quad-core powerful device incapable to functions at its best performance possible. im running 1344 mhz now and i think its enough compromise between processing power and battery mileage.

The config file is at the end of the post as an attached file. I've been using the max frequency at 1095MHZ for about a week and I didn't face any sort of lag in the performance but I dont game.If u game a lot just put GPU to the max frequency thats it.

wow, that's really great. i came across somewhere that you have to charge the phone will it's off for the first time charge, up until 100% full charge. did you do this? im having problems with my battery, i only get around 15-hours worth per full charge right now.

If u are a hardcore gamer Just keep the GPU frequency to 450MHZ .You'll have no issue I played games like Real racing,Contract killer and even Good old NFS most wanted on my device.I faced no lag and note I didn't touched the CPU frequency. There was no issues like overheating or frame drops etc.

No I just Did what I explained in this post try battery calibration by Neema before calibrating charge your phone to full and calibrate,Reboot. If you loose any juice after reboot just charge it to full again and discharge to 0 and charge again.Note dont interrupt charging or discharging process in the middle. This might help you.

ok, i will try that. i use to run MIUI but i tried the unofficial mokee rom because i thought it might improve the battery life, but to no avail still. i will try the official one though. (the one you posted.)

lol these are all battery myths and rumours ... the so called calibration is to be done to old lead acid batteries which is a obsolete tech now and the LI-ion and Li-po batteries we use are much smarter and they dont need to get calibrated and get done all the things you mentioned in your post and allowing it to drain to zero will only reduce the battery cycles left and thus reducing the battery performance so dont spoil your battery by doing all those things just make sure it doesnt die ( drains to zero) every time you charge your phone or else your battery cycles will be reduced

Hi everybody,
I want to know if we can overclock our Snapdragon 808 to 2GHz (ARM A72 cores) with a modified kernel.
Also, If somebody is going to work on this challenge.
Thanks!!

A57 cluster, probably yes. I'm also working on a kernel, but I intensely dislike Overclocking because it isn't all that useful. The key to performance is with optimisation, not with raw power. So I'm most likely not going to include it, sorry.
What about underclocking and/or undervolting?
I think performance is good enough as it is, but would like to get better battery life.
I would like to be able to undervolt in order to relieve the bugging high temp warning. This phone rarely uses max performance. So, overclocking is not really a priority. Maybe a custom hotplug.
Crappy cpu. No point messing with it.

Hotplugging has been dropped not long ago. You'd basically need to reinvent it. Plus it costs more power than it would save
And what about undervolting to prevent excessive heat, @mythos234?
yea i guess undervolting is the only benefit here coz 2 ghz wont be hard to achieve but getting that overheating msg sooner aint worth it...
next thing u know is accessory back plates with mini fans to keep the phone cool...
seriously tho what good is the extra power for ? the phone is already fast with the correct setup (not that i saw any lag when it was stock)
anyone knows how to see the cpu binning in this phone?

A number of people have gotten over-temperature messages, sometimes with the phones even shutting down.
This has been reported with using navigation, I believe, and I know people have reported it when shooting video. High screen brightness is likely a contributor. But there are examples of the phones running too warm.
Personally, I'd be more interested in cooler running, and longer battery life, rather than increased peak performance. So underclocking, if anything.
Well, the overclocking is not necessary, but is an opportunity to know the limits of the chipset. Moreover, with it we could know if we can make undervolting to our phones and make it more battery efficient with an underclocking kernel, when we need it.

Happens to me too when gaming. The problem I observe is that Indeed, it is not excessive heat. But LG thinks otherwise.
You can actually underclock using Kernel Auditor and disable cores. Unless you meant Undervolting.

Wanna check out periscope and comment back ? Atleast I know that app will push the phone to its limits.

Currently using Kernel Adiutor to disable both A57 cores and the phone screen does not heat up like before... Battery life has improved from what i saw yersterday. Continuing testing today. Only problem i have is the damn phone will enable one of the A57 cores after a while which i dont like. I need my settings to stick.
Any Kernel Dev know which files are causing this? Tab 3 had something like this but a couple of files changed solved the non sticking settings on cpu.
Overclocking/underclocking sure but just disabling cores would work for most.

I haven't had any popups or heat related reboots, so I was wondering what the matter is here.
On every phone I see complaints over heat so I wondered if something is to it here or if it's the usual. And if there are overheating warnings and shutdowns, then there might be indeed something in the bush.
Try charging your phone in the car whilst using google maps to get to an important meeting, and then take a call just for good measure............and boom, there you have your own little meltdown.

That happens on every phone I ever had though. It's advised to not use a device while charging at all, so if you stress it to 120% while charging, of course it heats up..
@mythos234 is a pleasure to have you here (speaking as xiaomi mi2s owner too xD)

"For the sake of battery save", powersave is the best governor. And you hopefully just understood why questions like these are frowned upon.

i've messed around with ondemand and powersave, problem is whatever program/app u use will change the values but simply wont stick as theres something forcing the cores to jump to max freq when under load
so i quit and am waiting on a kernel or rom that will allow this type of customization.

But that's the thing if you read the other reply you will then see why I asked. Since there seems to be that the root cpu commands doubt stick and get overidden
try use 3C Toolbox
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ccc71.at.free&hl=en
this app can control frequency and governor for each core. use it on my late z1 compact. i havent root my g4 yet.
but speaking of battery saving, I dont see any big difference compared to untouched processor frequency/governor.
for underclocking the frequency, I can see theres no overheating issue on the phone (when heavy gaming or heavy photography, the phone will still heat up but not too much)
I believe custom kernel will help much in terms of battery saving.
you wont see much different with stock kernel tweaking. imo
@negeri: and, moreover, tweaking (customization+ powersaving) seems to kill the battery life.
Have to flash the new 10e and Xposed framework, I won't try to optimize things as all I get is a slow and laggy device.

Haha sure thing. Now everything's fine, I bet ot was a mistake to install Gravitybox + XuiMod.
What has helped was putting min freq to lowest and leaving highest in Max and setting on interactive.
