[Q] flickering google maps direction arrow - HTC One X

Hi,
Luckily I don't have any issues what most people are complaining
I am not a heavy navigation user but yesterday when I started google maps, my position direction arrow (the one which shows in which direction you are standing) kept moving in differint directions fastly and didn't stay in one direction.
Do anyone know what this problem could be ?

Compass/gps. Doesn't work properly

My GPS is working fine, its only compass problem, how can I reset my compass ?i tried HTC testing app (*#*#3424#*#*) but didn't find any option to check compass

same here
Hi
I also got an issue with the compass here.
The GPS is working alright, but the compass direction is 270 degrees wrong...
If only I could set the compass north direction I am sure it would be fine, as the error is very stable...

HTC desire, magnetic field sensor problem on rooted rom

Recently I rooted my HTC desire and installed the froyo stock rooted rom, the person who published it says that he did not change anything in the Rom however I'm having problems with my magnetic field sensor. The compass app just goes crazy, doesn't point in the right direction plus Google sky maps also does not work. Please correct me if I'm wrong but my theory is that is the magnetic field sensor at fault. Does anyone know how to fix this?

you can calibrate by going to compass and waving it in figure 8 direction 3-10 times. this might help the sensor.
compass / gps only works once. root problem?
I am having the exact same problem with my rooted samaung r720 vitality. I am not sure if this problem existed prior to rooting but as I can't get a stock rom or back this one up I can't test it. I can't see why a root would cause this problem but who knows. I also have a problem withe gps it only works once maybe you can try this too. Download gps test put it in airplane mode go outside let it run for 2 mins after getting a fix shut off gps fix/ gps for 2 mins and then start it up again repeat this one more time (3rd time) then report your results.
With regards to the compass if you calibrate it it will work for a shortime but this is soon lost. I only have the problem with horizontal movement not vertical. It seem the calibration/ ofset settings are not being remembered.

fixed. used another persons nandroid backup of a stock rom. probably firmware was faulty not from rooting process.

[Q] Compass off by 90 degrees

I've noticed on my new S3 that the compass is sometimes off by 90 degrees. Then, if I close the map app and open it later, the compass is accurate.
This this a known issue?
Thanks!
Not sure about this issue but I know there is a way to calibrate the phone somewhere in the settings. Not sure if it will help or is even related but might as well give it a try.

I didn't find a compass calibration, although I recall seeing a gyroscope calibration setting hidden somewhere (I'll have to find it again). Would that help at all?
I tried a compass calibration using the GPS Status app, but it didn't seem to help. It's strange. Tried it again on my way into work and it got some of the directions right, but wrong on others. It also seems to improve over time. I almost wondered if it didn't have a magnetic compass and was just using gps signals to guess at your direction. As far as I can tell, there is a real compass in there, although I suppose I can't be sure Samsung is actually using it.
Same problem here...
I'm having the same problem here on all my devices, so i'm thinking it is more likely a bug in android than a hardware issue.
Calibrating the compass with GPS Status (on the play store, can*t post a link yet) helps but never for long... quit google maps or navigation, and on next use I have to calibrate again.
I just verified this one someone else's S5, same there.
Another interesting detail:
I used to have the same issue on my Samsung S3, but with CM on it all is well now... so it really seems to be a software thing.

interesting: there's a two year old bug entry about this on google: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=37771
...it has been closed as "obsolete".
nice going there.

[Q] Is the compass a failure in the Note 2?

I've had my Note2 for a little over a week now, and think it's a pretty cool device. Today I saw something about the ISS and realized I hadn't loaded Google Sky yet, but then I realized I hadn't tried my compass yet. I downloaded an app and found the compass useless. I then tried GPS Test and get the same results. Then I found this thread in GT-N7100 section which describes a neat test mode (dial *#0*#) and in that mode when I test the compass it does the same thing; it jitters wildly, and tilting the phone side to side sends it spinning. I dont know if this is a dealbreaker yet but this is not a good failure to find when Im right at my 2 week return window.

after read your post, i did retest ( I did test before ) using Compass & Gps test app . With Compass app its pin point exactly where im at , Gps test app i got 23 sat in view and 19 in use.Hope its help
I just tested my note 2 with street view, and I also found the compass does jitter a little bit, not too much. But enough to effect the experience of the street view.
In general, the compass does find its north, and the correctly location of where I am. And all my map functions do work fine.
I'm having the same trouble with my SPH-L900 sprint. See YouTube video. It twitches while standing still but while driving around it goes nuts.

GPS issues

Hi there
I have got some kind of GPS issue's.
When I'm using navigation apps( tomtom, Garmin, Google ) it can't give me my exact location. When I'm driving fast on the highway it shows no problem. But when I'm in the city and driving with 50km/h it gets confused. It can't decide if I'm on the this block or on the block on the left or right.
Tried to change Rom.
Completely erased phone with all data lost.
Wiped entire phone.
Turned the phone on and off obviously
How ever, in Google maps it shows my exact location and even which direction I'm facing.
I'm wondering if it's a hardware failure.
My screen broke once. But I can't really remember that it didn't work after that...
So any ideas ?

Could be hardware issue like mine. Opening the case and lifting the GPS pin fixed any issues I had.

If Google Maps has no problem with positioning it's not hardware, or the problem would be universal regardless of application used.
It is more likely that your GPS navigation apps are at fault. Perhaps sensor filtering or just an incompatability/bad version.
I find Google Maps navigation is a perfectly acceptable navigation app, particularly if you pre-cache the areas you'll be in and it will function fine offline.
That said, I don't use my phone for navigation unless I have to. A dedicated GPS unit absolutely smokes GPS implementations in phones.

Problems with some navigational sensors

GPS is really quick to find a fix, but in Google Maps, I keeps wondering randomly. It's not even snapping to roads. It's just floating around some random spaces of land.
My compass doesn't work either. I've tried calibration using GPS Status.
Anyone else have these issues?
Not rooted, everything stock
I do find the gps problem in mine too. For me it even takes time to get the gps locked (~1 min)

I have problems with compass and accelerometer too. They work randomly and they often don't report the right values!

4.3 is an improvement. You have to calibrate before every use, but it did work for me. I'm back to 4.1 for the battery life and wanting to root.
