Update
Feedback from many users of Samsung Galaxy S II phones appears to suggest that the display calibration problem is prevalent mostly in Qualcom based units. These include models from:
1. T-Mobile USA
2. AT&T Skyrocket
3. Telus Canada
4. Rogers Canada
The Exynos based Samsung Galaxy S II phones are known to be calibrated considerably better. These include models from:
1. Sprint
2. AT&T (non-Skyrocket model)
3. International version
End update
Many people are complaining about the quality of their T-Mobile SGSII displays. I noticed the problems myself and decided to perform some detailed testing.
Here is how you can reproduce the simple test:
Download the blobs.jpg to your phone. A copy of blobs.jpg is attached here. Or simply point the browser on your phone to: http://cheema.com/blobs.jpg Tap and hold the dark gray rectangle and then select "Save image" from the menu. Note that it is not entirely black. It is dark grey. Testing with a black screen gives you false hope that your display is good.
Turn off automatic brightness and dial down the brightness all the way to make it as dark as possible. Go to Home->Settings->Display->Brightness.
Open up the "Gallery" application and locate the blobs.jpg in the download folder and view it in a mostly dark room.
At this point you'll probably see a greenish display with vertical lines and dots all over. If you see this you have what some of us call a bad/non-calibrated display. Based on the data I have seen so far, I think that all T-Mobile Galaxy S II owners suffer from this. Most people believe they have a good display because they do not have a the equivalent Sprint phone to compare with.
Results of detailed testing of T-Mobile SGSII screen
I performed the detailed tests with a total of 4 units. 2 from T-Mobile and 2 from Sprint. I set all phones to identical brightness level (lowest) and proceeded to run a few screen tests.
1. Blobs test
For this test I used Gallery application to display the blobs.jpg file attached here. [Click the pictures to see the full size versions]
I slowed the camera shutter down good bit so that I could see details that are not be visible to the naked eye. One thing was pretty clear, the Sprint phones (#1 and #3) had imperfections too. Lines and blobs. This made me think that perhaps all Super Amoled displays have them. However the reason nobody sees them on Sprint phones is because their displays are properly calibrated with correct contrast, saturation and color temperature values.
This is pretty close to what you see with a naked eye:
2. Reading test
For this test, I simply loaded up a web page that I was reading earlier and found difficult to read on T-Mobile SGSII. http://alexzambelli.com/blog/2009/02/10/smooth-streaming-architecture/
This was the deal breaker for me. Click on the image above for the full size and the compare the last 2 phones. This problem cannot be fixed by cranking up brightness. As that brightens up the text too. And you want the text to stay black and sharp for good contrast.
3. Picture test
For this test, I grabbed a picture from Flickr and displayed it on all phones.
For this test, you probably should look at the larger shot, before drawing any conclusions. The smaller picture simply does not show enough detail.
While none of the phones in the picture test show entirely correct colors, the Sprint phones do a commendable job. "T-Mobile 2", goes off the deep end and shows the tree to be mostly green, when in reality it is mostly yellow.
4. Front camera test
For this test, all 4 phones were switched to front camera and the camera settings were reset to default. I then put the phones down on a table and took a picture with my Canon 60D. By now I was not expecting any miracles and I did not get any.
T-Mobile units continued to show that they were not loved by their creators. On a side note, I am beginning to think that the T-Mobile units may also have something wrong with the front cameras. I'll have to set aside some time to perform detailed front camera testing for comparison with the Sprint phone.
Conclusion
In an earlier post I stated my belief that all T-Mobile SGSII phones have screen problems that do not exist in the Sprint version. These tests with additional units back up that belief. There is no good way to explain the consistent bad performance of T-Mobile phones when compared to the Sprint phones. While we do find the lines and blobs present in the Sprint phones too, their presence is inconsequential. Proper calibration of the display masks these lines and blobs. The T-Mobile phones unfortunately suffer from incorrect display calibration. Some are much worse than the others. Many will continue to claim that their T-Mobile phones do not suffer from the same problems as the two units I tested here. While statements like "My phone looks OK to me" are well and good for the individual user, they are not scientific. I invite any skeptic to find a Sprint SGS2 and put their T-Mobile unit next to it and run these tests. And then come back and show us the results. I would genuinely be surprised and happy if any T-Mobile SGSII phone out there behaves differently from the ones I tested.
I do not know if the incorrect calibration can be fixed with a software update. I hope that it can be. It would certainly save an otherwise awesome phone.
I would be open to trying a different test with all 4 of these phones and compare output. Let me know if you have a specific test in mind. In the meantime, I will probably run a few more tests and will update this post with new data, as it comes in. I will also be happy to update this post, once anybody finds solid evidence of a single T-Mobile SGSII phone with a good display.
My hope with this post is that we raise awareness of the issue so that people building and shipping these phones wake up and fix the problem. If we continue to pretend that the problem does not exist, then it most certainly will not get fixed.

Just tried it and my screen looks fine. Looks like the phone on the right.
You're right man I never noticed but I see what you're saying. When you pull the notification bar down its not really black it is grey. Same thing in the browser when you hit the menu button, the menu that appears has a grey background color instead of pitch black.

Very interesting. You followed all three steps I listed above and looked at the result in a dark room?
But then again I just downloaded a plain black wallpaper ( hate to say this but like the iPhone 2 g black background) and its pitch black!!! So I guess it's a minor software issue ( or not?) I don't know.

I am not sure I follow. The pulled-down notification area is not really supposed to be black. It is grey. However I do see lines in it, in a dark room, if I turn the display brightness all the way. Something I do not see on the Sprint units.
I love this. People will find ANYTHING to complain about, even if the phone is perfectly designed.
This phone has the clearest & most vibrant screen of any phone I have ever had. It crushes all other phones I have ever owned and makes my coworkers iPhone 4 and 4s screen look sub-par.
You can complain all you want but what do you expect to happen? T-Mobile sure as hell is not going to do anything. And getting it replaced with another one clearly isn't going to make a difference. Unless you plan on switching to Sprint (terrible idea) then I suggest you forget about it and move on to care about things that actually matter.

I posted the earlier thread, comparing a T-Mobile Galaxy S II with the Sprint equivalent here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1320163
I posted a couple of pictures comparing the screen performance. There was a bunch of confusion from people who said that their phones do not look like that. I suspect that they haven't really tested their phones the correct way. Here is what you have to do:
Download the blobs.jpg to your phone. Note that it is not entirely black. It is dark grey. Looking at a black screen tells you nothing. A copy of blobs.jpg is attached here. Or simply point browser the browser on your phone to: http://cheema.com/blobs.jpg Tap and hold the dark gray rectangle and then select "Save image" from the menu.
Go to Home->Settings->Display->Brightness. Turn off automatic brightness and dial down the brightness all the way to make it as dark as possible.
Open up the "Gallery" application and locate the blobs.jpg in the download folder and view it in a mostly dark room.
At this point you'll probably see a greenish display with ugly lines and dots all over. If you see this you have what some of us call a bad display. Based on the data I have seen so far, I think that all T-Mobile Galaxy S II owners suffers from this. Most people believe they have a good display because they do not have a the equivalent Sprint phone to compare with. If they did, they would notice the following:
T-Mobile units have bad contrast. This is specifically bad if you are reading a lot of text. On T-Mobile units, the white backgrounds appear to have a blue tint to them. For most websites and apps, this works OK. But for some that do not use a plain white background, it makes readability much worse.
Colors in pictures are washed out. See my previous post, linked above, for an example.
I am not planning to return the phone at this time as I do not believe there are any T-Mobile GSII phones out there with good displays. I'll suffer through the bad display with the hope that Samsung fixes this issue with a software update. It is very likely that they messed up color/contrast/saturation settings that can be fixed in software. I also think that Sprint units have these lines and dots too. However we do not see them because Sprint displays are setup correctly.
Note: The attached photo shows T-Mobile GSII on the left and the Sprint version on the right. Both are running Gallery software showing the same exact image: blobs.jpg (attached).

I tested this out....downloaded that image and set brightness to 0 and opened the image in a dark room....i can see it was not pure black or a little shade but no dots or visible lines. I'm not sure if it should display completely dark colour but it's not bad for me.
followed the steps. I do not have this problem. Guess i'm one of the lucky ones

I fulled the OP's instructions and got the same (poor) results that he did. Note to others trying this: you have to do it in a dark room, otherwise you won't see it.
Very strange that Sprint's panel, at least, looks way better.
I have the issue as well. And im all about dark colors on my phone and notice it often. However, oh well...its not enough to return it. Love the phone and I know im usually over picky.

Well the thing is its not perfectly designed, the gs2 is advertized with amoled which should be crisp and sexy and if every has that blurry screen problem then they have the right to bring it up. Better to speak than to be a lil b*tch and keep quiet speaking up brings awareness and therefore hopefully a fix for the phone

Most people cannot, but unfortunately I can. All the time. Specially when reading text on some websites. I read a lot of documentation on my phone.
As you can see in the attachment in the original post, the Sprint version does not suffer from the poor screen. My hope is to raise awareness of the issue and have Samsung fix the problem quickly.

The forum software does not let me post large picture attachments. But I have made one available here: http://cheema.com/blobs-comparison-large.jpg
Are people reporting this to anyone? Tmobile, samsung?
I was just thinking. Could this be why we never got the same screen contrast app like the sprint verison and at&t version have?? That might have made it even more visible.
I've read a lot about people who have returned their phones. I thought it would be handy if we had one thread where people could state if they have returned their phone, why it was returned and how many devices they have been through.
I have sent mine back today. Dial a Phone said they would send a prepaid 'Special Delivery' envelope, however they only sent first class. I won't be able to track it now.
It was sent due to the screen flickering as I have mentioned in the other thread.
Hopefully it will be the first and last time I have to do so.
Same as OP. Sent today pre paid envelope to DAP for same reasons. White model made in Taiwan. Screen strobing on greys on all brightness levels.
Sent an exchange request to Affordable Mobiles (screen ripples and strobing), won't surprise me if they take days to respond and then ask me to pay for postage

Pre paid first class, however I paid for SD as didn't want to risk losing it.
Check your DAP account under my messages. I've already got a message from them couple of days ago saying order process has been delayed until tomorrow. Guess they are just awaiting arrival of phone sent today before dispatching new one.
I'm just returning from Carphone Warehouse's store where I returned my One X for a refund. Yesterday I got the first one I bought replaced, just to find a little bit later that the replacement exhibits the same screen flickering / banding / glitches issues as the first one. What really pissed me off with the replacement was that in addition half of its sensors were broken:
* Panasonic 3-axis Magnetic Field sensor
* Panasonic Orientation sensor
* Panasonic Rotation Vector
* Panasonic Liner Acceleration
* Panasonic Gravity
So the guys at Carphone Warehouse were kind enough to immediately issue me a refund, but what really amazed me is that they acted as if I was just the most unlucky person in the world and they have never heard of anyone else having those issues.
The moral from this - I just didn't want to waste my time any more hoping and waiting for the dreaded HTC firmware update.
I have asked to return mine and am awaiting a returns envelope from phones4u to send it back in, however the phone was dropped yesterday and has scuffed the casing so waiting to here if this will cause a problem with the return as per this thread.

Nice so we could potentially have it on Wednesday if they use the same SD.
returned my one x back ! will wait for the next galaxy to come out, till then galxy nexus will do the job !
had two white one x's. two were having the creaking noise. the other one had the power button loose and the other one had software issues. got me a grey one today and this is the third one. so far this one feels more solid than the other two i had. came close each time to going for the galaxy nexus but i thought maybe third time lucky....so far so good and i am glad i kept this
My OneX arrived back at buymobilephones.net this morning for non-working g-sensor and they say its working fine!!.
I did everything to try and get it working and it suddenly starts once it goes back!.
Not impressed with that for a start.
Slim
Just returning my 2nd hox from three UK (grey) model.
1st HTC one x was dead on arrival, not charging or turning on.
2nd HTC has screen flickering and all usual bugs, intermittent graphic anomalies, coloured bars on left while using camera, browser distorted graphics in top bar and weird box in middle of screen, sense reloading constantly even with 2 factory resets.
Phoned HTC and they said they new of no problems or bugs with one x and no updates coming. Very worrying. 3rd handset on way, last chance HTC then over to galaxy III.
Now getting my third handset tomorrow. All been white.
1st phone. Shocking battery life.
Second phone. Hairline crack, screen flicker, screen glitches

Currently holding the One S, no issues yet, battery life seems to be great. Get my One X tomorrow, man I got my fingers crossed it will be ok, going to upload a vid comparing them I will link it here, fingers crossed no issues... god I am hoping lol
Ere u go , HTC UK.

So if my phone is doing all of these I should return it:
1. Has a flickering screen
2. Flash makes everything yellow on camera
3. Browser UI is glitching up on me with graphical distorts
4. Battery dies in 20mins of use
5. Keyboard moves me to random places while I type
Yes or no?
Sounds like most of you are getting nowhere returning them all the time. And it sounds like some of you are getting shoddy repair jobs done that are breaking the phone even more.
Logic tells me to get a refund and wait untill a model that works is released and buy the phone again. I love this phone too
Just sent my white HTC one x back to buymobilesdirect as it had screen corruption under touch pressure, fantastic phone apart from that.
Will have my new one on wednesday, fingers crossed!
I bought GTA 3 and showdowgun will I be able to redownload for free or am I going to have to pay for them again??
Made taiwan ht23
Went to phones4u today and saw that had received two devices this morning asked them to play around with one, its pretty cool... 460 gbp for now ) will you get one?

Not a happy puppy lol, Oh well looks like I will be using the Titan for now.
I bought the Lumia 800 3 weeks ago, but I will exchange it for the 900 when it lands in Denmark....
Anyone in the UK would be willing to swap their lumia 900, for a white Nokia N9?

I have started another thread to post my findings and if you have any general questions and UK XDA members might have as this is a mixture of USA and UK posts here.

Anyway, how much do you get it?
Not on their website but you can get it instore for £459. Still undecided between white an cyan.
Got a white Lumia delivered on Saturday.
So Far, battery excellent, went from 7:30am to midnight yesterday with no charging (albeit must have been seconds from dying when i plugged in) with heavy use of wifi during the day.
Seems like an excellent choice, screen is amazing too!

My Lumia Developed a problem (phones4u)
No sound from the phone speaker and its only a day old, resetting only helps for a while.
funny enough if I press the bottom of the screen between the windows logo and the search button I can hear the sound.
Defo a Hardware problem, THey have given me an exchange code now, Hope to exchange it today hopefully for a better one.
Camera seem to take blurry photos close up /portraits ( changing the focus to macro seems to help )
Also mine has the purple tint in camera which goes away if saturation under camera settings is changed to minimum.
It is a beautiful phone with Bugs ... But still a beauty nevertheless

Camera is great, very good outdoors, not quite on par with the 4S but a lot better than my previous WP7 (HD7) which doesnt say much. I would say its the better camera ive had on a phone (having never owned a 4S)
Music is good, although, currently lacks an virtual EQ. IM a Zune subscriber and to be fair ive never really had any problems.
Interestingly, the BT Audio to my Logitech BT headphones is better quality and more consistantly connected that is was on the HD7.
Nokia just pushed out an update for the Lumia 900 on ATT!
Quote from Nokia Conversations
This update brings the following enhancements:
▪ Removes purple hue which affected the screen of some devices in low light conditions
▪ Improved sensitivity for the proximity sensor
▪ Other minor adjustments and enhancements
This update is only for Nokia Lumia 900 on AT&T’s network in the United States.
In addition to the enhancements mentioned, we’ll be rolling out new updates and surprises in the near future to all Lumia 900 users, so stay tuned!
Connect to Zune for the Update
Only change in About Screen was Firmware:
Was: 2175.1002.8112.12048
Now: 2175.1003.8112.12085
As per Radek Hulán: EU version, for comparison, has this FW: 2175.1601.8773.12141

... don't know about that. It may just take a month or so to wander North. It depends upon Rogers feeling they need to address some of these issues as well.
I guess for the moment, yes, but they did say "all Lumia 900 users" for near future updates.

I'm not doing the update yet. I'm going to wait until it is dark. What I'm thinking is Nokia's "fix" may just be removing the lowest dimming settings. If that is the case then those of use with working phones will actually have our working devices "crippled." Gonna see if I can video tape the difference... assuming there is one. Trying to understand the OLED screens.
Can the Rogers users flash the AT&T firmware or would the phone become locked to AT&T or Locked to Rogers again?

I had the purple hue setting and can confirm that the lowest brightness setting is still available. they did not take it away. On the contrary, it seems like they made the automatic 'low' brightness setting even lower than the 'low' manual setting.
I am not sure if this was the case prior to the update but what i had seen earlier, at least in a Samsung focus was was when you set brightness to 'Low' manually, and then changed it to automatic brightness, the lowest automatic brightness was equivalent. Now, the lowest automatic brightness is lower than the 'low' in manual.
Can anyone confirm this with their non-update lumia?

That is the way it was prior to the update. I'm just wondering if both low settings are putting out the same absolute number of lumens as the pre-fix settings.
I don't know that you can go back and forth with ROMS. I removed the Nokia flashing software from my computer and I don't want to hassle with it. So I am going to test and then do the update and see if there is a difference. I just need an objective way of being able to see a difference... if one exists.
Posted on a different forum. This is how the iOS works and looks like WP7 is supposed to as well.
Autobrightness is working, but it does look like it works differently than it did in the past.
Before, if you had auto brightness on and the brightness (level) set to low, the screen would go from the lowest brightness to the highest brightness depending on the ambient light. As long as auto brightness was on, it did not matter what the brightness setting was. The screen would adjust from the dimmest to brightest.
Now, it appears that the brightness setting affects the bias of automatic brightness. For example, if I have auto brightness on and the brightness is set to low, the screen will not get bright enough to read in the direct sun.
I now have auto brightness on, and I have the brightness level set to high. All seems well.
Based on reading some user guides for WPs, I think this is the way it was supposed to work all along. So, it looks like auto brightness not only works; it works as it should.

Wow this blows...
Can someone with the new update tell me if the "minor additional fixes" might include the touch screen lag issue?

I'm wondering the same thing. I haven't seen it come back yet, but sometimes, it was sporadic.
Also, I didn't have the purple hue issue, but I don't notice any difference on automatic brightness from before. Might be due to me not previously having the issue, not sure.

Interesting, I've always had the lag issue, it's never changed or been sporadic. I used my dad's Samsung Focus the other day, and it was beautiful not having the delay with touch, or the release early tough bug... I miss my samsung SOOO much...

I still have my Focus, and yes, it's buttery smooth. But, I'd be happy to trade you for your Lumia...
I'm just generally upset about my whole experience.
First, I was going to get the 900 when the $100.00 software-bug credit was there, but Rogers came back and said the $100.00 nokia rebate was only for new customers, not existing. Apparently existing customers had to pay not only full pop, but we weren't even eligible for the "month to month" price, we had to pay a higher cost for an "existing customer full buyout".
Then I accidentally break my focus, and get the 900. Returned it over 5 times, all had the purple issue.
The lag issue sucks, the battery issue sucks. I've accidentally let the phone completely discharge twice, and the last time I almost wasn't able to get it back (took over an hour to get it to power up).
Don't get me wrong, the phone is slick, beautiful design, specs are nice, etc... But I'm just getting SOOOO agitated at the Rogers/Nokia combo of issues.
Edit: I'm just ornery and having a bad day. Just extremely choked that Canadians didn't get the update as well... I tweeted Rogers, and they said they have nothing to do with it, they said it's all in Nokia's ballpark and they have nothing to do with the update process.
I just received my Google Play Nexus and as soon as I booted it up to the first screen I could tell the display was trash. It was stupidly purple and grainy. I know this isn't normal because I've owned 2 GSM Nexi previously. Even without owning them, it's pretty easy to see something is wrong with the display. How does this get released to the public?
I really don't feel like going through multiple replacements until I get a good screen. What are my options as far as guaranteeing a good screen? Thanks.

send it back and get a new one or flash a kernel and change the colors.
Pretty much nothing, going to have to stick with it or do a bunch of the advanced replacements or return it. I'm about to be on my fourth galaxy nexus. Even when I requested the most recent one they were bullshitting me telling me I was out of warranty when it had only been 1 week from the last replacement. I have wasted about 3hrs the past 2 days on the phone and got nothing but big fat NOs for any more returns and they told me id have to send in a repair and this was from a level 3 advanced return employee. This asshole level 3 god of samsung decided to make notes on my file saying I was out of warranty and not to advance replace my phone. He apparently was for sure that warranty was only for 14 days from date of purchase and would not listen to me. Thankfully I called a couple times more until I got connected with someone who sounded like they had the slightest amount of intelligence without redirecting me (i had to call very many times because mostmof the regular employees were seeing the notes the douche left on my account about not allowing me to advanced replace and telling me no)and ended talking to a standard employee who normally takes care of repairs/returns and she was like wtf u are still under warranty I'll fix everything in the records and send you a new one.
IMO if I were you I'd do anything to get rid of that phone without going thru Samsung. They'll bull**** you and run u around in circles and youll waste plenty of life on the phone with their garbage customer service. END RANT
this worry's me mine will be here Thursday i don't wanna have to deal with returns shouldn't have to with a 400$ phone this kinda sucks ...
Just got a replacement and the screen is WAY better than my last one. I honestly can't believe I went 7 months with a defective screen.

I was pretty much set on returning my phone to Google and take the 15% restocking fee until this rep figured out the issue andhelped. She was honestly the last call I was gonna make and if it wasn't resolved after then I was getting rid of the nexus and taking the 60$ loss instead of being stuck with this garbage screen nexus they sent me as a replacement phone

Yelling doesnt work. They are super firm on what they say and just redirect you to idiots that are higher up and don't listen. Just pray, pray and pray that u don't have to deal with samsung

i guess that ill have to do sounds like its a pia grr ill keep my htc vivid just in case now lol if nexus disappoints Craigslist it goes
I've owned two GSM Gnex's and never had a issue with the screen. I hope the one I get Thursday is ok.
I went through a single replacement with Google then returned the replacement because it was worse than the original. If purple bothers you, a custom kernel - like Trinity - will definitely fix it. However nothing can be done about grain and banding. My suggestion is return the phone and don't bother exchanging it if the latter two bother you.
I have seen a good gnex side by side with mine and I want to cry - the other has no grain or banding at all - however i just don't have the energy to fight Samsung on this and play endless exchange game, and wish I'd just returned the phone to Google and gotten something else. For the record I have two dark bands - one vertical and one horizontal - crossing in the middle of the screen, in addition to a heavy dose of grain. Trinity wiped out all purple though.

UMMM so how did she helped you with your issue?
How does the screen look bad? Is it in the dark or one of those tests or in normal conditions?

She actually saw that I wasn't out of warranty and deleted everything that was bs on the notes on my account. She set me up for another advanced replacement that nobody else would do

Touchwiz....ew. That ugly home button was a deal breaker for me.
My screen only goes purple when set to the lowest brightness. Is that the normal "purple" behavior people are talking about? Otherwise there is a noticeable snap back into the greys around 5-10% brightness.

Even if I could fix the colors (Which I doubt, they are so far off) there is an extreme amount of graininess to the screen. It's visible even on max brightness.

Mine is purple even on max brightness. I've never seen a screen this bad in my entire life.
