GSM Defy can change frequency bands! - Defy General

Hi everyone,
It's always been known that there is a 900/2100 Defy and an 850/1900 Defy.
I got mine from my 850mhz carrier in Australia. I am visiting Hong Kong at the moment. I purchased a one2free SIM (900mhz network), changed my baseband, and got on data with full HSPDA! I can download around 200kbytes a second.
Thought I'd share for fellow travellers.

Hi, how did you change the basebands to HDSPA 850/1900?

Look up "baseband switcher for defy" in Google. You'll be surprised. It's not really news...

Thanks for your answer, but I have a Defy+ with cm7. I tried with basebandswitcher and baseband of cyanogen but didn't work, they didn't change frequencies and the phone lost signal. Do you know why? Thanks

Desire Frequency in use?

Apologies if this is a stupid question;
Can I find out what frequency the Desire is using at any time? ie which 850/900/2100 band?
Just replaced an 850/2100 Desire with a UK-originated 900/2100 and the speedtest results have almost doubled.
Just want to see if it is still using the 2100mhz network or somehow it's using a 900mhz band with better results
Sidenote: in Australia we have 850mhz desires
Does anybody have any solution on finding out which frequency the Desire is using at a given time?
Thank you

The 850Mhz is only for Telstra. If you with any other provider (3, Vodafone, Optus) you should get the EU version! If you use telstra one with let say 3 card in it, you will only get 3G when you have access to 2100Mhz network.
My Desire is telstra one and im with telstra, speed test results are better comparing to HTC Hero on 3. Im getting around 500-1000kbps better results.
Only problem is that Melbourne server is gone from speedtest.net, and now we testing connection to Canbera and Adelaide so results will be diffrent.

I live in Mexico and have a European Desire and want to change to 850 since Telcel (cel provider) is what uses.
Any help on how I can achieve this?
wrong problem explained
What I meant was for the 3G 850 band
You have to buy a new phone! The A8181 Desire does not support that frequency - you need an A8183 Desire.

Dave

Thanks for the answer dave, I was hoping there were some software tweaks.

I know I'm dredging up an old thread, but I searched and have not found a way to display which of the 3G frequency bands is being used at any given moment by my Desire. Does anyone know of an app that does this? I would be surprised if there is not an android app that does this, since it seems there are such apps for other platforms.

[Q] 3G not working on AT&T US on DHD bought in Singapore

Hello Guys,
I am new to this forum and need some help with my DHD which I bought in Singapore.
I am using it in US with AT&T and unfortunately I am not getting 3G eventhough i have 3G service. I am getting EDGE after setting up the APN. Please let me know if there is a way to get this phone working on 3G. I have already called HTC and AT&T and they mentioned that there might be difference in the frequencies.
Thanks
DHD UMTS (3g) is 900/2100 MHz, check what your carrier provides.
My particular carrier in Thailand, TRUE, only broadcasts 850 UMTS, others here use 900/1900/2100.

ARC 3G compatibility

i bought this ARC from hongkong and now im in canada
but i never found the 3G network, and then i go to Fido store
i changed a SIM card.But nothing change.
and finally i found the problem: My Lt15i is only support UMTS/HSPA 900/2100
And i wanna to know if i can fix by change CDA or the driver of baseband?
no way to change the band compatibility... it's hardware related. your best bet is to sell that one and buy the arc from rogers
I had the same issue. I did receive the LT15i so it only works on EDGE.
eBAY is going to refund the money when I return the phone
I will then buy a LT15a which will work on our bands.
I'm amazed you don't know this. You buy a Hong Kong phone or a European phone, it is not 3G Canada. Hey, this is XDA. This is where they're supposed to know.
Here's a pro tip regarding Sony Ericsson phones.
last letter a = North American GSM frequencies (850/1900/2100)
last letter i = Global GSM frequencies (900/1800/2100)
last letter c = Chinese GSM frequencies and may be TD-SCDMA
LT15a is Xperia Arc for AT&T/Rogers/Fido/Bell/Telus frequencies.
LT15i is Xperia Arc for Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia GSM frequencies.
SO-01C is Xperia Arc for Japan.
Is there an LT15c?
What about Brazil?

Brazil uses the "a" version.
I'm just wondering to the OP what did you do?
I realize I have the same problem.
I too bought an arc in hong kong. Actually it was meant for my mother, but I traded her with my x10.
My arc LT15i network only works on edge.
I think it's funny how my x10 works great in hong kong while the arc can't connect to 3g here.
Is there a service provider that would be in that same frequency?
I'm currently with fido.
[Edit] Excuse me for reviving dead post.
Switch to LT15a_3.0.1.A.0.145_NAM
maybe works
Here in Brazil, works with LT15a
But works LT15i
But if 3G is hardware problem, I'm sorry!
Greetings
Do not buy a internation version phone unless u clearly know the phone 3g band. It is because most of the international version wont work in most of the carrier in north america. I believe it is because frequency 850 only used in north america, so they have to make a "special" edition for north america carrier.
Also you can't change the baseband to get the 3g network, since it is hardware problem, not software.

[Critical] 900/1800 - Baseband Issue - CM7.1

Hello Folks,
I have flashed CM7.1 stable official MOD on my friend's Defy which worked great with a annoying problem with baseband.
Before flashing CM7.1, the phone was having Stock 2.2.2 and was having no signal reception issues. We were getting good signal like -51~63 dBm / 24~32 asu with stock ROM. Flashing caused NO SIGNAL at the first, after which I tried changing basebands with included switcher and then installing from a thread in xda. We managed to get connected, but the signal is -105~90 dBm / 4-12 asu.
The problem is there is no frequency band 900/1800 in the baseband switcher. The closest and officially listed for India is 900/1900 which might be good for most operators using 900MHz.
We are on Airtel in Kolkata and it seems they operate at 1800MHz here in the city. We are getting low signals due to being on 1900 baseband.
An xda fellow has tried to remedy this by getting baseband from stock ROM at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944258&page=3#30 but this does not get flashed with the Stable and Current CWM on the phone, it's incompatible.
I am unable to post at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052745 as I don't have much posts here. Though it seems if the great guy here can bring 900/1800 for India, it would be greatly appreciated by many.
Note that, some Indian users, even Airtel users may not face this as in most circles they use 900MHz frequency band. It will only cause issues to the Users in 1800MHz operator circle.
Can anyone have a solution or at least some experience of this, I've done research as much as I could do.
Thank you
Hi there
I'm on Cell C in South Africa, and seem to be having a similar problem with CM7.1 - Cell C also operates on 900/1800MHz. Did you ever manage to find a compatible baseband?
use the latest basebamd switcher...
it has baseband from the latest sea update... it should worl gr8

We haven't been able to find a solution while it was in 1800 area, I shall ask my friend if the updated switcher has this. The cell is currently in 900 area so there is no problem with band for now.

Both these versions have Indian baseband frequencies taken from the official SEA rom (900/2100). I dont think it is 900/1800

Will try your suggestions, but it's 900/1800 for 2G, 2100 is called 3G here.

[Q] LT18i in Canada Network issue

Hi everyone,
months ago, I bought online SE Arc S LT18i from Hong-Kong and since I got it I always had 3G issues...
After laborious researches I found that LT18i do not work on North-American network (I'm in Canada) and only LT18a does!
I flashed a LT18a (US STOCK ROM) in it but it didn't fixed the problem...
Does anyone know a way to get it fix, please?
Best Regards

READ THE DESCRIPTION PROVIDED FOR VIDEO CAREFULLY
It's hardware related. You cannot do anything about it. You will not get a 3G signal even if you flashed an LT18a firmware because your phone lacks the necessary band.
Installed 3G/HSPA radio in LT18i:
HSDPA 900 / 2100
Installed 3G/HSPA radio in LT18a:
HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100 / 800

Thank you for the link!
Unfortunately it says:
"i" phone:
"i" firmware in an "i" zone = 3G.
"i" firmware in an "a" zone = No 3G.
"a" firmware in an "i" zone = 3G.
"a" firmware in an "a" zone = No 3G.
So I guess I buy a new one
