Need some pointers... - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Could somebody point me to a good guide for flashing my play?
i see alot of useful hints, but not a real point to point tut...
and could somebody please point me to the most stable working version of ICS?
gps and data is a must!
Thnx in advance!

Depends on your model of play. CDMA or GSM?
R800i/x/a/at?
ICS is a bit finnicky with data depending on the model
I've got the R800i and data works. Also, are you able to unlock your bootloader?
There's a hidden keypad combination that tells you how (I can't remember the code though)

can i just flash the Darkforest ICS Kernel and then flash rom?
or do i have to do something else first?

Try this thread mate. It's the ICS rom I'm using. Using DoomLords Advanced Stock kernel. You may need to flash his WiFi modules too (I got lucky and didn't have to)
So, since I'm guessing you have USB debugging enabled (in settings somewhere) and fastboot works here's what you need to do:
Download the kernel of your choice i.e Doomkernel Advanced Stock and rename it to "boot" (without the speechmarks). It's an IMG format file
Download the ICS rom i.e KA12 (one I'm using) and move it to the root of your SD card (along with any of the other zips in that thread you want to use...I advise against "onscreen buttons" and "battery" one...they display wrong)
Under the Android folder on your PC locate the Fastboot folder and move the "boot" file there.
Now, whilst still in that folder, hold shift and left click (might be i and left click lol I forget) and "Open command line here"
Switch your phone off and connect in fastboot (hold search whilst connecting phone to PC) and type the following:
fastboot flash boot.img then hit enter
After its done, type fastboot boot boot.img then when your phone resets, disconnect it.
Sometimes it loads up the kernel then switches off but don't worry about it. Switch it back on and hammer the back key for all its worth and you should boot into ClockworkMod. Perform a factory reset/data wipe, wipe cache, Advanced followed by wipe dalvik cache
Go back to the main ClockworkMod menu and install zip from sd card, choose zip, then select the rom you downloaded I.e KA12.zip and install...let it run its course...back to main menu and install zip, choose zip, and install any of the other add-ons you downloaded
After you are done, select reboot and wait...first boot can take ages
IF after 10mins its still not booted then flash an older firmware using Flashtool.
For most of the ICS roms you need to be on the .62 firmware by the way
Anyone spot any errors please tell me...Dont want to soft brick the guy
Sent from my R800i using xda premium

Allrighty will give it a try
For most of the ICS roms you need to be on the .62 firmware by the way
what do you mean by that? where can i check?
* so basicly if i want the darkforest rom, first i have to flash official ICS beta, then flash kernel, then flash darkforest rom?

Under the About Phone section in Settings
Think it's basically your baseband version.
Mine had the last 2 digits as .42 until I flashed the newer firmware. If yours ends in .62 then you're good to go. If not, grab the .62 firmware (it's a ftf file) from the internet (make sure its the xperia play one lol) and flash it with Flashtool
I'm off out so I'm not gonna be online for a few hours. PM me if you have any issues

Hate to tell you this, but none of the ICS ROMs currently available are going to be "light, fast and stable" in any distinguishable manner from another as they are all beta at the moment. They all use the Sony beta as base, so whatever chinks it has in it's armor, they will too. Really, the best choice is to pick the one that interests you most and experiment with it. I would recommend using KeiranFTW's Darkforest ICS Kernel for sure. He has a great ROM as well.

[Q] How do I flash a custom kernel & is it safe?

Basically the title says it all. I'm a noob at these things and don't wanna risk bricking my phone. I want to try flashing a custom kernel that will allow me to overclock my Play but I don't know how to..
My Xperia Play is rooted and has unlocked boot loader already and below are the things shown under 'About Phone'
- R800i
- Android 2.3.4
- 4.0.2.A.0.69
The most popular kernel for xperia play is doomkernel, i have also tried it it's very good. There is an description in the doomkernel thread how to install it.
Sent from my Xperia Play using xda premium
It's pretty safe if done right, I was in the exact same position you were up until a few days ago, I spent a good few hours reading and I was running DoomKernel with Gin2ICS, clocked at 1.8. Now I'm just wanting to put that superchargev6 script on
Many people chose to do it the hard way. But teh best way it to use Flashtool
link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351299
It's pretty much staright forward. Download your desired kernal and ofcourse after installing the programm head over to it's directory files and inside the drivers folder. Run the application "Flashtool-drivers.exe" and go on and install everything. (can take a long time). Then after run the programm without your phone hooked up with USB debugging on click on the flash icon (the first option from left) chose fastboot mode. Click on Reboot into fastboot mode via ADB. Then press "Select Kernal to Flash" and chose the desired kernal you have downloaded and after a couple of seconds you are good to go. Good luck!
Doom Kernal is the one of the best one out that and the chances of you bricking it is really very low
Will the "DoomKernel" kernel work on a .69 build? I checked out the thread and it only says for .42/.58/.62 FW.
Also, can I flash this without a custom ROM as well? I'm not really big into custom ROMS but I do need an extra dose of speed, hence the need for overclocking.
It will work on .69 and the kernel works with all stock roms.

If it's not too much trouble can you explain more clearly? I have already downloaded the doomkernel files(PLAY-GSM-DooMKernel-v14_boot.img) and the wi-fi modules from the other thread and I'm not quite sure what to do with it. Do I put the .img file into the Flashtool folder?
Sorry, but I really am a noob at these things.

Sorry i have tiped the wrong key
So activate debug modus under development section in apps section, then turn your phone off.
Then hold the search button of your phone and connect it to your pc. A blue light will light up, when that happens you can stop pressing the search button. Then tipe on the lightning symbol in fastboot and select fastboot. Then there will pop up a window, there you have to select flash kernel now you have to select the kernel file and press ok. It will begin flashing. When the progress ends you can turn on your phone. And don't forget to flash the wifi fix in recovery. I hope you are able to follow

Hey guys
I'm having an issue with flashing a kernal to my phone. I have a SE Xperia Play R800i GSM with stock GB 2.3. The phone is rooted and has CWM, but the bootloader is not unlocked. I have downloaded the flashtool and tried flashing my device to load the LuPuS kernel for the ICS4.0.4 ROM, but just cant seem to get any joy. The software recognises the device is rooted, but fails with each attempt to load the custom kernel saying it is because the device is not rooted.
Oh, in MSC with debugging available. I have attached a log from the flashtool software. Can anyone tell me where I am going wrong?
Thanks!

[Q] Help with r800at

Hi everyone,
A friend of mine has had an Xperia Play on AT&T for a little over a year now. I've been flashing custom ROMs on Android devices since the OG Droid and the Nexus One all the way up until now on my Droid 2 Global (waiting for my Samsung Galaxy S3 to arrive). This friend got an HP TouchPad back during the firesale, and after seeing how nice CyanogenMod 9 is on it, he really wants a custom ROM on his Xperia Play.
The community at XDA is always very helpful, and I've searched around, but it seems the r800at owners are in the minority compared to the r800i owners.
I cannot seem to find a straightforward guide on how we would go about getting him started with this. I'm also unfamiliar with Sony's actual flashing tools, if they have any. Anyways, I've gathered the very first step would be to pay someone reputable on XDA to unlock the bootloader and Fastboot. This is required for the r800at, correct?
We've already gained root access on his device, and I have made sure he doesn't pull the latest update that AT&T is trying to push OTA.
Also, the r800at's hardware is identical to the r800i's correct? As in, after we get everything set up, he can just flash ROMs intended for the r800i, correct?
If anyone r800at can point me in the right direction as to how we would get his device up and running with custom ROMs, that would be extremely helpful.
Thanks in advance!
My signature says I have a r800i, but my phone was originally a r800at before I flashed it. Just an fyi.
Now, you're friend needs to unlock his bootloader/fastboot. He can just google search alessandro and you should come across his unlock bootloader site. Your friend has to pay him 24 dollars to unlock his phone. He does not make a profit whatsoever, the money is used on the program he uses to unlock the phone. Once that's done, if he goes to the CM page, he'll probably have to flash a different firmware, likely a r800i firmware. All he has to do is adjust his apn settings and it will be like nothings different. Just flash it via flashtool. Google is your friend. Since he's rooted, he should go to the market and install CWM auto installer. Then open the app and install CWM recovery. To access recovery, reboot your phone, and when the Sony Ericsson logo appears, continuously press volume down until you reach the menu. Now put that aside for a second. In the CM thread, there will probably be a zip file to be downloaded. Download it, and put it somewhere in your sd card. Do NOT unzip the file. Now boot into recovery. Using the volume keys to navigate, with the home key as select, navigate to install zip on sd card. Then locate it in your sd card and select it. Then select yes and let it do it's magic. This a very rough explanation so if you need more help just holler

I'm obviously familiar with using CWM, but I'm a bit confused- is it only the very first time you flash a ROM that it must be done through flashtool? Can we just use CWM to update/install new ROMs via the traditional method with zip files?
That's where I'm a bit lost- why and when must flashtool be used as opposed to CWM?
Thank you for the help though. I think first things first we'll get his bootloader and fastboot unlocked.

When you're flashing a rom, it may ask for a certain firmware since that might have been what the Ron might have been based off of. Once you have the required firmware, you can flash the zips away. Flashtool is used to flash the required firmware.

So when you say "firmware" are you referring to low-level stuff like the radio baseband?
If so, that makes sense.
So even the kernel can be flashed with CWM, correct?

[Q] Trying to install Xperia Play Z final version, very confused. (r800a)

Hey guys, as the post title says, I'm trying to install the xperia play z rom, and I'm hitting a lot of road blocks. First one is, I don't even know if my phone's bootloader is unlocked! I'm pretty sure it is, because I thought all r800a's came with an unlocked bootloader, and I also used the flashtool, unlock bootloader tool, and it said it was already unlocked.
So, naturally what I do, is I flash the firmware in the guide (located here - http://www.android-hilfe.de/root-cu...a-play/417392-rom-xperia-play-z-v1-1-0-a.html), and after that I want to root it so I can install a recovery. But when I try to root it, it always fails on part 1. So I tried to install cyanogenmod recovery without it. But after the apk is installed, i'm not able to install the actual recovery because it is not rooted.
My main problem with the guide is that it says to just boot into clockworkmod recovery, but I don't know how to. I turn on the phone and press the up button, but without installing the CWM/X-parts recovery, there's no way I can expect it to come up.
Any help please? I'm totally lost here. I know how to get roms that are based on gingerbread, but for some reason, Ics/Jellybean roms don't work at all, and I don't know if it is whether because my phones bootloader isn't unlocked (even though it says it is), or it's something else, like me missing a tutorial specifically for ics/jellybean roms.
Thanks in advance.

yes, boot.img is inside the zip. Unpack just that file and flash it with flashtool (in fastboot mode). But you must have unlocked bootloader to be able to flash any custom kernel

Sorry, another question. What happens is that when I try to flash an ics kernel, it goes into an infinite bootloop, but when I flash a gingerbread kernel, it works fine. Is this a sign of a locked bootloader? Cause I thought you wouldn't be able to install any kernels if it was locked.

For future readers -
a. The r800a indeed does come with bootloader unlocked
b. It is normal for the phone to bootloop, Just go into recovery like normal and install the rom .zip. (It's usually tapping back while starting the phone, but if that doesn't work, try up volume or down volume)

[Q] Can i keep going on r800x Bootloader Unlock?

// It seem that i posted on the wrong section (had alot of tabs opened, sorry for my mistake, if any admin can move the post, will be AWZUM!)
Hello! im pretty new to unlocking bootloaders and stuff, and i wanted to know, i search here on XDA some tutorials and i found this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1961298
How ever that tutorial covers 2.3.3, and im running 2.3.2 Stock Rom, also when going to sonymobile and following the steps to unlock the bootloader, itsays to dial *#*#7378423#*#* and check for rooting status, my device dosnt have that displayed ( as a side note, i rooted my deviced almost 2 years ago).
However, I Continued with the sony steps and when dialing *#06# , the cellphone does give me my MEID, i continued with the tutorial, and so far, i got in my mail, my key to unlock my bootloader.
My question is, can i proceed with unlocking my bootloader? i would like to install a custom kernel so i can overclock it, to play games a little more fluid, my current room its a Stock Rom, however ALL the bloatware apps are gone now, my phone just have about 12 apps, and its using 80 megas out of the 300 the xperia has. is this good or i can go better with a custom kernel and a smaller rom?also im from mexico, when doing this im gonna need to reactivate my cellphone or something on the company?
Cellphone: R800x (Custom Build.prop To Be Identified in the market as a R800i)
Status: Rooted
Rom: Stock Rom 2.3.2
Want To: Play games more fluid, try to overclock TO A SAFE SPEED. i dunno maybe 1.6? 1.5?
Thank you! C:
Update to 2.3.4 then it will show in service menu if you can unlock bootloader and if you want root then root through flashtool with 2.3.4

Thank you! C:

You can unlock your bootloader with flashtool. Doublecheck your unlock code you got from Sony. Make sure you have correct drivers installed. Verizon kept the root status in service menu hidden... But it will work.
Yes it will work but as lordomn said check and make sure all your drivers are good then do it and you should be fine

Thank you guys! so far, i got my Xperia Play atm very clean, i got it whitout ANY bloatware, i think almost same as the "Cola Rom", it only have like 10 apps, as a base, and it uses 70 megas from the 300 that it has, so my question would be, if there are any GREAT benefits from unlocking the bootloader, on the "Gaming" side of this, like what can i do after unlocking the bootloader that will pump a little my device on the gaming way? O:
Well you can flash a new kernel and over clock your device

Yeah, thats easy saying lo, but im particulari new to this.. theres alot of stuff involved, for example, im on 2.3.2 stock rom, i made a revocery image using CWM, and saved it somewhere safe, so here are the questions in order, ( if you can answer them in order would be great ):
1.- im on 2.3.2 stock rom, and i saw a kernel named 2.3.3 stock kernel with overclock, can i flash this with my stock rom and keep my stock rom, or i would need to flash first a 2.3.3 stock rom?
2.- when i want to test a new rom, do i need to flash the kernel first, or the rom?
3.- am i totaly safe with CWM and a nandroid backup?
4.- testing kernel is something safe? i mean can i go back?
5.- if something goes REALLY WRONG, can i flash the stock rom/kernel using flashtool?
6.- i found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1605631 wich is the stock kernel 2.3.3 overclocked, but im on 2.3.2, can i flash it and stay on 2.3.2 or i need to flash the kernel and then the room, or first the rom and then the kernel?
7.- can i install CWM recovery on all the roms? i pretty much want to be safe, in case something goes wrong, or can i just use FLASHTOOL, to flash the stock firmware / kernel 2.3.2 and start over again?
8.- unlocking bootloader makes the xperia play able to use the flashtool, right? like, whitout unlocked bootloader, how does people flash roms for locked bootladers? using CWM recovery menu, the update .zip function? im pretty confussed right here, like, i unlocked my bootloader, so, i can use flashtool right, thats what unlocking the bootloader its for?

i think you can find the answer to alot of your questions here at FMA's thread it has a very good Q&A.... but anyhow ill answer them to the best of my ability.
1. im not sure as i never messed around with GB but i believe that 2.3.3 kernel will work on 2.3.2, but why would you want to stay on 2.3.2 when 2.3.3 has better performance?
2. Yes always flash the kernel first then the rom.
3. A Nandroid backup does not back-up the kernel as the partion its on CWM cant see... so if you get a faulty kernel flash or you flash a wrong kernel just use flashtool to get a working one.
4.yes you can always go back from flashing a kernel and yes its pretty much safe.
5. yes you can always flash with flashtool unless for whatever reason you damage the bootloader or the Trim Area then you have to seek for more advanced methods to recover the phone, dont worry tho if you dont accept an official update after unlocking the bootloader you will be fine.
6.i would be safe and upgrade to 2.3.3 using a .ftf so that you dont have any headaches.
7. yes you can flash CWM on all roms, however CWM is not part of the rom but the kernel and almost every costom kernel already has a recovery.
8.no everyone can use flashtool, unlocked or not except r800at models, no thats not what flashtool is for, flashtool is built to flash .ftf files to Sony Ericsson phones, it also has other functions like unlocking a bootloader and other things
if you have other questions just ask and i will do my best to answer them...

[Q] xperia s Change OS to 4.4 cyanogenmod

Dear forumers.
I usually do not ask stupid questions as that, but there I am very very confused
I just want to install some new OS to my XPERIA S (LT26i). Now I have all stock cellphone conditions with original 4.0.4 Android version.
My wish is to have phone fastest as it can be and all stable. I have read many many topics and guides there but I am still confused where to start. I need all flashtool, bootloader unlock, root, recovery, flash kernel, flash rom and do not know what to do first, second, third,... And I do not want to break up phone.
Can someone please kindly understand me and copy links of actual guides in right order? I need suggestions for 4.4 version OS-s too.
Best regards

Is it? If I go to Update Center or on PC in Companion it says me that phone is up to date. It cant find any updates. I don't know why?
Can someone just tell me where I must begin, and what to do next, and what is the last thing to do? (guess flash new rom)
I just need order of work from all stock phone. I understend the guides and I can find them, but do not know what is the right order.
Probably you don't know that it is not so easy to first doing that, but for noobs that forum is so hard to understand especially because of risk to damage your phone is something goes wrong.

Now you need to download a rom from the development section, then open the zip on your pc, extract the boot.img. Then copy the rom zip file on to your phone and flash the boot.img using fastboot or Flashtool. Then turn on your phone, and keep on pressing the volume up button to enter recovery. Then wipe everything except system and sdcard and then flash the rom.zip. Reboot your phone and it should be running kitkat

I have rooten now too. So there is just installing ROMs, did not need any recovery on phone or kernels or something like that?
Which ROM will you suggest as a smooth and stable of 4.4? Need to work camera, call, sms and alarm.

i tried many aosp was best but lack of customization killed me,but smoothness was real awesome the guy helped u is the developer of carbon rom but i didnt try it so no comments.for daily driver and gaming i wont recommend rayman's rom or pureslim.no offence, they are stable but comparitively few games were slow and dint start on both like subway surfers and fifa 14 :silly:
I have installed this on my xperia but it's not that it has to be. It's version 4.6 not 4.8 and it's not 4.4 kitkat bur 4.1.2 JB. OTA updater says: Error fetching update info: Invalid ROM (LeOpArDx) & device (lt26ii) combo!
And device is LT26i not ii. At 60 page of discussion the others have the same problem with version and updating.
