[Q] Does anyone know a way to disable the hardware buttons? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Does anyone know a way to disable the hardware buttons so their unusable? i want to use the on screen buttons on AOKP. any help is appreciated

You mean just the bottom capacitive buttons?

What rom? On aokp, using a root file explorer, go to /system/usr/keylayout/sec_touchkey.kl open it with a text editor, delete the text inside and then save the file. Make sure your nav bar is enabled and then reboot. Once rebooted the keys will no longer work but may light up, to turn off lights, go to settings > display > backlight > custom settings, check use custom settings, go to edit other levels, in the buttons column set all levels to 0 click save and they will turn off, you may need to reboot for the settings to stick. Once both of those are done the capacitives will be fully disabled, no lights and pressing them does nothing. Using es explorer to delete the text in sec_touchkey.kl will automatically create a .bak for the file so if you decide to reenable them you just delete the .kl and delete .bak from the backup and reboot and the touch function will work and reverse the settings under custom backlight to get the lights back.

Home, Menu, Back, Search LED Control?

Is there anyway to turn those backlit buttons off? Its really annoying when I try to read at night.
Thanks!

I'm sure there are apps for it, but if you're on CM..
1) go into Settings> CMSettings> User Interface> Automatic backlight
2) check "Use custom"
3) go to "edit other levels" and change the values for buttons to "0"
Ah phooey...I'm on the Virtuous Sense ROM. I don't think they have this setting there. Anyone know of any working apps for this?
Thanks!

[Q] App for toggling soft button LED's

Incredible running CM7.1, chad's incredikernel from last August (I believe.)
I use the hell out of CM's 'night mode' filters, but as it's dark in my room at night - go figure - the light sensor is tripped into leaving the capacitive soft keys at the bottom of the phone on whenever the screen is on. This kind of wrecks night, mode more or less.
I've found references to the App 'LEDs Hack' in several places, which gives rooted devices the ability to disable the LED's all together, so this sounds like a winner. But then when I try to find this app anywhere (every major market / app store + googling around) it's no longer listed anywhere.
Does anyone
A) have this app and can confirm it works?
B) know where I can find it?
Thanks
Slick

I do not know of an app but i use scripts to turn mine off and on. Actually at the moment i have it set to turn them off at boot via an init.d script. Below is a zip of two scripts, one for off and one for on. The off script can easily be modified for use as an init.d script to turn off the soft key lights at boot. This works on my stock rom but cm's files may be different.
http://dinc.does-it.net/Soft_On_Off.zip
Thanks for the scripts, much appreciated! I'll tinker with these are bit. I'm really terrible @ linux, but I've seen init.d scripts before, I think.

Here is an init.d script incase you cant figure it out. Just unzip it and place the file in your /etc/init.d folder, and set the correct permissions owner and group.

I have the filter set to 100% but disable the checkbox for the capacitive buttons therefore when I enable the screen filter, the screen stays whatever brightness my CurveFish widget is set to but the capacitive buttons turn off. I love it.
I have my "Automatic" brightness settings all tweaked to my liking and I just leave it on Auto all the time. If you do that, you can set whether the soft keys will be on or off.
For example you can set the soft keys to be off on the dimmest settings (i.e. dark room) and on in brighter environments. I leave mine off all the time (I know where those stinking softkeys are).
Go to:
Menu > Settings > Cyanogenmod Settings > Display > Automatic backlight > Edit other levels... (Use Custom must be checked)
To turn the soft keys off, set the values in the "buttons" column to 0. 0 turns them off, any other number (1-255) will turn them on. Then hit "Save and apply". If you set all the numbers in the "buttons" column to 0, then they will always be off.
Just a word of warning, tweaking you automatic settings can waste a lot of your time if you are a perfectionist...
All of these solutions are great, thanks again! Currently using the screen filter widget option with the CM filters, makes reading in bed sooo much better. Still want to play around with the script just to see if it works, and the custom brightness settings are for tomorrow.
Thanks again.

I like the Screen Filter by Haxor method but unfortunately its an either on/off solution. I wish there was a way to regulate the brightness of the LEDs instead of just on or off. Oh well. It's all good
I just always keep mine off to conserve some battery. I can find those keys blind folded. Although if there were a way to dim them i would probably keep them on super low just for looks.Unfortunatley due to hardware restrictions that is not possible.
I use this app to turn off the keys
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.deskangel.adjbrightness
You should be able to find it in the settings.
Hope this helps.

[OFFICIAL] Tips & Tricks thread

This is for random tricks that aren't widely known.
I'll start off...
Missing that search button key on the bottom from the SGSII? Have no fear, just press and hold the menu key, which acts like the search key
Annoyed of the home button lag? turn off double tap to activate S voice within that program and your home key will be much more responsive
Can anyone think of anything else?
Edit: Ironlood has put together a list of tips and tricks. Thanks!
1.Hold menu button for search menu - eyecon82
2.To get rid of home button lag open up S-Voice and navigate to settings and untick the launch with double tap home button -eyecon82
3.Lock screen app settings are listed under security in settings - kegacide
4.you can swipe the screen with the side of your hand to take a screenshot, or hold home and power-kegacide
5.Hold down physical button and you can close all open apps and go to the task manager - hawkeye2188
6.Buttons on the bottom of the lock screen and can be swiped and open that application - hawkeye2188
7.You can also swipe away individual apps after holding down the home button - NA 521"
8.first go to settings>language and input and turn on voice cmd for apps. I had it on early today and said cheese and the camera snapped a photo...pretty cool -s3xda (on a side note it seems as though the variants have different voice cues try snap, cheese, shutter, and go)
9.In settings > sound > device vibration, you can select a different pattern of vibrate, or just make your own by touching create! - Zoidpilot
10.In app drawer > widgets, Sammy added a widget to use flash as a flashlight, and a widget to turn the entire phone into negative colors.-Zoidpilot
11.You can set the brightness in the majority of stock apps (i.e. the browser) to be app specific, instead of just setting a brightness for the entire system. For example: set the brightness to auto in the system settings, then open the stock browser > brightness and colors, and set it to high. Now the system will have auto brightness, but it will always go to high/bright when you are in the browser! -Zoidpilot
12.If you go to Phone > Logs > call logs, you can long-press a number (like that telemarketer you always reject) and select "add to reject list" to have the phone automatically reject the call every time. You can also unblock the number in case you change your mind.-Zoidpilot
13.In the stock messaging app, you can go to settings, and on the top you will find options to change the background and bubble style of the messages.-Zoidpilot
14.Samsung's S-Voice can do complex mathematical equations for you, then show them in different answers. For example, open S-Voice, and ask "how many inches are in a mile?". Or "what's the square root of 543,636?". -Zoidpilot
15.In settings > security > lock screen options > shortcuts, you can change what shortcuts appear on your lockscreen, or take them out altogether.-Zoidpilot
16.On the headphones that came with your device, you will see a single button and the volume controls. One press of the single button will pause the music, two presses in quick succession will skip to the next track. -Zoidpilot
17.In settings > wallpaper > home & lockscreen, if you select a live wallpaper, it will show as your lock screen as well. It will deactivate the ripple effect though if you have it active.-Zoidpilot
18.You can also use pop-up play on streaming online videos as long as they're not YouTube videos, and as long as you use the stock video player to stream them.-Zoidpilot
19.Pictures come out better with the camera if you hold the camera button and let it focus before the shot, rather than just pressing it after touching the focus box.-Zoidpilot
20.The stock browser has "incognito mode" just like Google Chrome! You can access it by opening the browser, the touching the top right corner to see open windows, then touching the incognito icon. While you're incognito, no history/cookies/or form data will be saved.-Zoidpilot
21.While you are on a call, on the screen where the contact picture is displayed, there is a speaker icon in a bubble. Touch it to increase the call volume past the maximum setting. It works on speaker or on headset setting.-Zoidpilot
22.If you're not rooted, but want to get rid of those pesky bloatware apps, go to settings > application manager > all, and select the app. Within those settings you can clear the information the app has, then disable the app with the top right button. You may need to uninstall updates before it says disable app though... you can also go to the app drawer, hit menu, then select "hide apps" to hide the bloatware icons you've disabled. -Zoidpilot

29.I noticed that any time you send an email in gmail with our new phones (t-mobile version at least), it puts a stupid T-mobile signature at the bottom of the email. I found that you can change it by going to gmail>menu>settings>[email protected]>signature and putting in whatever you want.-moonfire711
30.Also, go into your dialer>menu>settings for more in call goodies.-moonfire711
31.Many probably already know this, but I just found out that you can turn on the screen with the physical home button instead of the power button. Which is nice if it's laying down on a desk or something.-moonfire711

41.pull down the notification touch the time and it will open the world clock (might be variant specific) -Deputy13
42.I have only tested this with Windows Media Player, but I assume any DLNA equipped TV/media device would work. This is great if you want to quickly show a slideshow of photos or play some media file on your tv/computer.1) Go Settings/More Settings/Nearby Devices 2) Turn on file sharing and change any options you'd like. Since I'm on my own my Wifi network, I just disabled access control, otherwise you have to approve every device.3) Start Windows Media Player. Make sure under Stream "Allow Remote Control" is checked. You should see your phone show up under "Other Libraries" in WMP. Mine shows up as [Mobile]SCH-135.4) Go into Gallery and select a picture. If connected properly, in the upper right hand corner there will be a new little icon with a monitor and some arrows. Touch this and it will allow you to select a playback device. 5) Now the picture should show up in a maximized screen in WMP. Sometimes it takes a good 10-20 seconds. Videos take much longer, but they work and what I got was the first frame, followed by a good 20 seconds of a "Processing" notification on the Galaxy S3. When I browsed from WMP to my phone videos, it buffered for a very long time, so this "processing" notification is the buffering taking place. I don't know why DLNA needs such a long time to buffer over a home Wifi network.6) Whenever you change folders you have to click the DLNA icon again and re-select your playback device. Not sure why this is, seems like a bug...Unfortunately I did a little research and there is no way to physically copy files to your computer through DLNA, you'll have to use other methods.Make sure you turn this stuff off when you connect to public Wifi .-sluzbenik
44.When viewing videos using the stock video player, you can lock the touchscreen by pressing the power button so that the video does not get interrupted by inadvertent touches. This is especially useful if you are using your phone to entertain your baby or toddler. Also works with mx player though haven't tried it with other players -limeaid
45.Do not know if it has been mentioned already, but you can also bring the phone up to your ear and it will call that contact.-ricky babalu
46. if you are in the apps drawer, and you pinch the screen, you will see all pages of your apps and can quickly choose the one you want.-moonfire711
47.Haven't noticed this being addressed but regarding S-Beam it appears that both phones are required to utilize the same app that is involved with the file being transferred. For example, I use "quickpic" as the default image viewer and when I used s-beam to test a pic transfer, the phones connected however my buddy's phone went to the play store and more specifically went to the "quickpic" downlad page. Obviously my buddy's phone required him to dl the app in order to finish the transfer. I then opened the same file via "gallery" and reinitiated the transfer. This time the phones connected and transferred the file without a hitch. -augustorm
48. lock screen shortcuts can be edited on the swipe lock screen go to settings/security/lock screen options/shortcuts click the word shortcuts and not the toggle it will bring up the 4 shortcuts and your allowed to change which app is accessed or what order there displayed in -ironlood

The Service menu is activated through a sort of code that you enter into the dial pad of the phone. To get started:
Start your Phone app
Get to the Keypad screen
Type in: *#0* #
You now should have in front of you a screen with a 5 X 3 grid of options.

You can also swipe away individual apps after holding down the home button. An HTC rep at an AT&T store told me that one today. She was trying to show off the One X. You need to have a good portion of the screen covered with your hand (instructions say use your palm) and just swipe it across in an even motion.
Also make sure the function is turned on in the motion settings!
Same thing here with the screenshot, I feel dumb as hell as I still can't get it to work.
Also , is anyone using the stock ICS keyboard? I hate the Samsung keyboard.

[MOD] How To DISABLE HOME BUTTON WAKE & Assign SWIPE WAKE

This all started after I noticed how much I accidentally hit the Home Button with my flip case on the Note 2,
It sometimes woke the phone and jumped it directly into an app, and thus, can also make unsolicited phone calls or such.
This will come in handy if you have a sticker (or elevated) home button, and when you need to wake the device quickly without having to hit the power button (i.e. check maps while driving, etc.)
**Video demonstration coming soon**
WHAT THIS DOES:
1) Disables your home button wake. Meaning that you will officially stop the home button from waking up your device.
2) Every other function of the home button will be left unchanged.
3) Use app called "GestureDroid" from the Play Store to wake device without having to hit the powerbutton.
INSTRUCTIONS:
**NOTE: You do this at your own risk, you will need to have ROOT in order to perform the first task of disabling your Home Button wake function.
1) Use a file explorer such as Root Explorer (recommended. It creates a wonderful backup of the modified system file) or ES File Explorer from the Play Store. Open up the app
2) Navigate to SYSTEM in your root directory (directory should appear as "/system"), then navigate to USR, and finally locate the folder KEYLAYOUT
4) Mount the read/write to read/edit: Press the "Mount R/W" grey box on the top right area (if using Root Explorer) and it should switch to say "Mount R/O".
5) Look for the file titled as "gpio-keys.kl", and long press for options (if using Root Explorer) and choose the option to "Open in Text Editor"
4) Once in Text Edit mode, look for the line "Key 172 HOME WAKE" and remove the word "WAKE".
7) Press back, confirm and save. Root explorer should now have saved a backup file for you.
8) REBOOT
TOGGLING WAKE GESTURE
1) Go to the Play Store and look for the app called "GestureDroid". There is a free version, and if you want more functions, I would suggest that you support the developer and purchase the pro version for $1.31 USD.
2) Open the app, and tap the green checkmark to enter. Enable "Start/Stop service", and also your preferred choice of 1 gesture or 2 gestures (and etc, if you have the pro version)
3) Under "Action", select WAKE PHONE
4) Go to "Advanced Settings", select ACTIVATE SENSOR IN SLEEP and also ENABLE IN LANDSCAPE.
5) Personally for me, I've edited the Maximum time to become 350ms, this permits me to swipe at a comfortable speed without going frantic trying to wake my phone. I have also changed the Minimum time to be 300ms, and Wake Time to be 6000ms.
**ADDITIONAL NOTES:
- App is on, even if it doesn't show on Notifications Area.
- App can also wake into lockscreen or bypass lockscreen
- You should notice a faint red glow on your sensor if the app is working
- You will need to do your swiping motions closer to the sensor if it doesn't seem to work
- After rebooting, the app might need to be refreshed, turned on/off again, or have the "Activate Sensor in Sleep" option re-enabled.
- For flip cases, I would recommend choosing the "2 Gestures" option.

If this MOD has helped you, HIT THE THANKS BUTTON.
I don't have a problem with my home button I think it's a little too hard yet. As far as the app you suggest, I suggest proximity sensor as it is a much better app that works to turn on and off your phone using the cover. Note, you might have to put a thin card on the inside of your cover.
Sent from my SGH-I317 using xda premium
For those who find some issues with GestureDroid (the sensor turns off occasionally) try a app called "Tap Tap App". You need to give it permission to act as administrator over screen on/off after you install the app, but I find that it's a lot more reliable because of this reason.
Tweak with the settings by going into "Unlocking Training", and then selecting "Sensor configuration".
Sent from my SGH-I317M using xda app-developers app
I used this mod because everytime I slide it into my pocket, I do so upside down which means to grip it and pull it out, I tend to hold it in a way that hits the home key before it's out of my pocket causing all sorts of issues for me. Looking around, I also noticed a few configuration files for various controllers and keyboards including the usb Xbox 360 controller and the Apple keyboard. Is it possible to write/download one for something like the PS3 Sixaxis?
Do you mean finding an app that can offer plug and play of your PS3 controller? Or do you mean configuring the individual buttons?
This is the app that's available for the six axis controller:

[sm-t211] Enabling button haptic feedback?

My device is the 7" sm-t211.
Can you guys tell me is there is an app for enabling the vibration and light of the back and menu button on the device?
I cannot seem to find it in the settings app. Also flashed rooted stock firmware with odin, not sure if that made the setting disappear, didn't check it before.
Back and Menu button is working, it's just there's no light, and vibration feedback.

There's a vibration motor inside this 7.0 tab for phone calls, notifications, etc.
I'm sure we can enable vibration feedback for both of those keys with softmod.
but I'm not sure where to start.
as for the backlit, forget it, it's hardware limitation.
Update : tried to modify qwerty.kl in system/usr folder, but no dice.
somebody tried?
