Calling Canada or texting costs you money ...it considered as an international ..there are many apps they allow to you to text Canada and US free ..but you will have a different number not the carrier number ..

google voice allows calling and texting to canada/us/mexico for free. plus, google voice and sprint have some kind of partnership where your google voice number can be your main number.
I don't remember ever being charged for texting to Canada on SERO with my Treo. I would hope SERO P is no different.
Lol once again mixed answers but I'll use Google voice, thanks

I'm from Canada. I call my family and text them like every day. With your sprint number ported to google voice you can simply text n call like normal from ur epic (don't have to do from GVoice app) no charges.
When i first ported to google voice they accidentally had some international charges, i called them and they immediately removed the charges no fuss or fight needed.

I no expert on the subject but Google voice texting uses data, which can be pricier than regular/roaming texting. I'm not sure about calling...

Uh... did calling Sprint and asking them ever cross your mind? Seems the logical thing to do when you have a question about your plan.

So I'm brand new to Sprint coming from AT&T which has my faves. The plan I chose with Sprint was the 129.99 for two phones (bought EVO for the wife and I). It says on the plan unlimited mobile to mobile callling but only 1500 minutes landline. I use Google Voice all the time and when it connects, it uses another number to connect my phone call. After all that, my question is whether the number that Google Voice uses to call out is a landline or a mobile number. If it's a mobile number, I have no problem, but if it's a landline, I'm really worried that I'm going to exceed the 1500 minutes I use just to call out using Google Voice.
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/voice/thread?tid=7162282a0c817918&hl=en
That is all I could find, still looking. Good question none the less.
Good question, but what intrigues me is that people still call landlines?? I was thrilled when I realized it was unlimited mobile to mobile across any network.

If you call Google Voice I think it counts but if you call with Google Voice to a mobile phone its Unlimited.
Of course to Wireless phones only
well one of the easy ways to check it, is to use Google voice heavily for a day then check your minute usage in the my sprint section of sprints site. if your using your minutes up heavily then it looks like Google voice is the culprit.
it wouldn't be whether the number being called by google is a landline or mobile, it would be whether your google number is a landline itself. because, you're technically calling THAT number from your cell phone, i believe.
it's one of the reasons that tmo got rid of the myfaves thing, in order to keep people from setting up their google number as a fave, then never technically using any minutes ever.
edit: i just did a reverse number lookup on my google voice number. it's a landline. i wouldn't recommend using google voice, lol
That's exactly what I was concerned about, you found out that the Google voice number is a landline which uses up part of my 1500 mobile to landline minutes, I have to admit, that really sucks
It definitely is a landline. I have confirmed this as well and posted on some other sites the same thing. I believe somewhere in google's help information they state it is a landline as well.
Damn, I was curious about this also, id love to use google voice, guess we will have to wait.
is it possible to create a pre-paid mobile account, set it up to automatically foraward all calls to that number to the google voice and then you're calling a mobile, using google voice, and not being charged (other thant the pre-paid account)?
just a thought
Sprint has free mobile to mobile no matter what carrier.. i have the 1500 plan but only use around 150-200 mins a month between four of us... unless ur a telemarketor i dont see how u can use so many minutes

I have the same 1500 minute family plan with two phones... Together my GF and I used 18 of those 5000 minutes last month. We really don't know anyone who uses a land line and those 18 minutes probably came from calling local businesses.
Last time I used google voice (a few months ago) all calls made through it where considered land line calls. They might have changed it. An easy way to check it to log onto your acount on sprint.com and it will show you your landline usage.
I don't think your understanding, I understand that I have unlimited mobile to mobile, but when I used Googlevoice, it uses my alocated 1500 minutes for landlines. I'm looking for a way to use Googlevoice so it can redirect it's calling to a mobile line.
There is no way around it, that's basically why I haven't used my google voice number much, because it's considered a landline call.
But these days, any network you go to, it's the same unless you can get on a plan that has favorite numbers. But even those are being phased out,
like T-Mobile's Fav 5, and with AT&T you need the $80 plan which will then enable you to have your favorites like Fav 5. Sprint also had a top 3 at one time also, but they don't seem to give that plan anymore either.
But unlimited any mobile to any mobile kicks butt, it's just not friendly to google voice.
If you're already getting the 1500, how much more is the unlimited calls? I think that's your best bet.
I was just wondering if they charge extra money for texting to a long distance number?

You are talking about international...right?
this is what I found, maybe it will answer your question.
http://shop.sprint.com/global/image...utions/hero_international_texting_340x340.jpg
When talking is not an option, International Texting from Sprint is a simple and fast way to communicate with friends, family and associates in other countries.
Choose our Unlimited International Text service, and you can text as much as you want to over 180 countries for just $10/month. Just be sure you're in the U.S. or domestic location, including Canada, U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Unlimited International Text does not include audio, picture or video messaging. You also need to have a domestic unlimited messaging plan or add-on.
If you don't choose to add Unlimited International Text to your plan, you can still send and receive texts just the same for 20¢/message.
1Additional texts: 20¢/msg. Pay-as-you-go texts: 20¢/msg. International roaming: Check coverage details for availability and rates. Text to Landline: no additional charge, standard texting charges apply. Voice SMS messages: will incur an additional data charge, if you do not have a data plan, and are not available with all phones.
Yes I did mean international. Thanks for the info...... and [email protected]!k me... I'm already at least 20 messages deep in convo.

I was having clarity issues on my wifi and non-wifi calling so I called Tmobile to replace my device and they've shipped a new device today. Reason, I mention this bcuz it all started when I asked the Tmobile rep that I've been hearing rumors on tmonews.com about the wifi app not using your plan minutes after November or so? He said it's true but only applicable to SGS2 and HTC Amaze phones, not to any prior models at all (period). They have to turn that option on in your account settings otherwise it will always be using your plan minutes. Here's the catch tho, He couldn't turn this option on bcuz I'm on grandfathered plan with myfavs option on my shared family plan.
I use Google voice to call my gf on UK cell and it's 10c/min and it still uses my plan minutes even being on wifi calling option on. He recommended either to change my plan to the newer ones to get free wifi minutes or to add my google voice number to five favs so it doesn't get deducted outta my plan mins. I didn't know if anybody had mentioned this before here so I thought about sharing it. Remem, Sharing is caring
Q) Does anyone else have any idea about cheaper and convenient way of calling uk Tmobile (796) number?
Q) Why do we get crystal clear sound wheneva she calls me but choppy/discarded convo when I make Google voice calls? she has Samsung Galaxy S1 Tmobile uk model. I also hear my buds from local town complaining about degrading sound quality after like a minute or so? I hope that new replacement device fixes the issue.

So I've been browsing the internet looking for what people thought about going voip instead of buying expensive cell phone minutes.
After thoroughly researching the subject I decided to go all in and make my Nexus data only (Verizon). Verizon, however, were onto me and apparently they don't even offer data only phones anymore.
After that little set back I went back to my research. Lo and behold I found that one could switch 4G Sim cards on devices and receive an internet connection. So I canceled my expensive voice/text/data plan for my nexus ($120ish/mo) and went and got a mifi 4510L which was free with 2 yr. contract.
After doing this I simply removed the 4G Sim to try and put into my nexus and ran into yet another problem. IT WAS TOO BIG! After doing some more research I found i could simply cut the Sim to fit into my phone and walaa I was in business.
I had a deactivated phone pulling down an internet connection from a mifi plan, so essentially I've gone data only which is what I wanted in the first place.
After this I simply got myself a Skype calling plan ($2.99/mo) unlimited US calling, and purchased a Skype number ($30 for full year with the new subscription discount). The quality on Skype is impeccable I've used many different VOIP services (voip.ms/callcentric/groove ip/etc.) and Skype is the closest to sounding like an actual cell phone. I can even use it while driving down the freeway at 70+ mph and no problems. The last company I used I wouldn't even try to make a call while driving even 10mph. The audio would lag out and turn into garble.
Since everyone already has my google voice number I tied it to my newly obtained Skype number, made my Skype callerID show my Google Voice number when I call out, and haven't looked back. I've even set it up on my gf's phone. Using the same method above with the mifi SIM switchout.
So at the end of the day I have a data only phone that I can make and receive calls from and text (through google voice app) and I'm only spending ~$55/mo.
Big improvement over the $120+ I was spending. Just wanted to hear if anyone else out there had some similar stories or was thinking about doing the same thing. :cyclops:
Sounds like a deal, straight talk is $45 a month though. I did notice that Skype has better call quality than sprint voice.

I'm on TMobile in Columbus, OH. No complaints here. $30/mo and I get unlimited data. Not sure if that makes it "the best carrier", but I'm definitely not switching carriers any time soon.
You will need to look up coverage maps in your area and ask specifically for experiences in that city.
Whats best probably depends on your area.
I use the T-Mobile $30 plan and I love it.

You can port your number for $20, but then you will have to get a new prepaid number. As for myself, I just started using the free number they gave me and slowly rolled it out to friends. In all honestly, I don't even know what my real phone number is now. Lots of features with GV.
I have had no issues whatsoever nor I know of anyone who does.

yes, but monthly - prepaid - also doesn't support conditional call forwarding required for gvoice to work on the cell number.. gvoicemail will only work on calls to the gvoice number... quite the bummer it's the main reason I'm thinking of going to the ATT straight talk BYOD sim from the Tmobile $30 plan
I dont use the minutes or data of the $30.. I'd actually pay $15 to tombile just for the call forwarding feature

No, you're right, it doesn't support conditional call forwarding, but there is always a workaround. I called tmobile and asked them to disable my voice mail. They disabled it and now all calls roll straight to GV voice mail if not answered. The only caviat to that is that if people call you on your tmobile number, the phone will ring forever if not answered, but again, as I mentioned, I don't give that number out, I don't even know what it is.

The reason to use GV is to have one phone number and a freedom to change carriers, plans, etc. So when you say "gvoicemail will only work on calls to the gvoice number" makes me ask "why would you want anyone to call you at your real number?"
For example, I can have one GV number and hop from carrier to carrier and plan to plan each month. Am I going to give out my new carrier phone number out with each change? No. That's why I already gave everyone my GV number once before.

On the recommendation of another friend I tried Google Voice just for voicemail and ran into the issue pdxtechdoctor was talking about.
I don't want to change my main cell number. I've had the same cell # for 11 years. And you don't need to worry about switching carriers because every carrier is required by law to port your number over if you request it. I've had my cell on Cingular/AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile Monthly now. The only downside is that it takes a few hours to port a number over and for prepaid/monthly some features are removed, evidently. But the upside is keeping the same number no matter what phone you have (Android, iPhone, BlackBerry, dumbphone).
