[Q] HTC One X - Battery Consumption (How long does it last?) - HTC One X

Hi there,
I am a proud owner of HTC One X ..
TO me, this smartphone is awesome, its fast and i love the design.
I'm ok with the heat, at times it is HOT, but due to its Quad Core processor, well, i can live with that...
BUT battery wise... How long can yours last ?
I'm pretty new at Android and this phone makes me busy because i am trying to keep up with the Android world... And boy... i'm glad to leave my IPHONE in my drawer... No more IOS !!
Is there any fix to the Battery issue?
If there is, have you guys tested how long more can it last ?
I can use for 2-3 hours and i'm left with 45% battery !!
Anyone ?
Please reply.. i would luv to hear from you guys...
I really luv this phone but the battery is killing me..

The problem with the one X:
leaving it unused (full connectivity 3g,wifi,sync) draws about 0.6% per hour.
But once you turn on your screen and start browsing the screen will deplete the battery really fast. (As will gaming)
Once you get used to your phone and you don't use it hours at a time anymore you can easily get 30+ hours of usage time which is way longer that any smartphone I had before this one (G1, legend, Omnia7). At this moment I have 23 hours of battery time with 36% remaining.

Yeah the screen is a massive power user.
I didn't really use my one x much the past few days and it lasted 51.5 hours! That's with wifi on, data on, cellular radio on etc. Only 1 and a half hours of screen time though.
I'm still very impressed, much better than my iPhone 4S could ever have done
Decided to plug it in now as it's down to 3%
Can't post links to the screen shots unfortunately
Tom.

Thee is a huge thread on battery life already here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25095183#post25095183
Try to read abit before starting a new thread.

I don't think I would be half as annoyed with the One X if it just charged faster. Almost 3 hours to recharge a battery is kind of ridiculous.
Hopefully someone will make a custom kernel with a fast USB charge patch.

Battery life survey?

I haven't been able to find any threads that already cover this. There are several reviews, users' opinions etc on how long the battery in a particular smartphone lasts, but it's always struck me as odd that this information isn't easy to compare - it could lead to name-and-shame for particularly bad phones or encouraging results for those manufacturers who actually cared & made improvements.
I've found a few people who had the same idea, and one of them (being a much more web-capable person than me) actually made a website for this purpose. I really don't want this to sound like advertising, because the purpose isn't to make anyone any money, but simply to centralise this kind of information and have some (arguably) more meaningful stats driven by and for the benefit of everyone who wants to know.
If you think this could work & be a good idea, please take a look at the site - http://www.wewantbatterylife.com/ . If you think it's a rubbish idea and/or have objections, flame away.
the li-ion batteries normaly have longer life than the old phones...so it will last enough time..u'll probably replace your phone before the battery dies Probably u can ruin it with overclocking your device or something..but draining is something else
ps: im trollling again :O
Hehe, I meant battery life as in "how long does your battery last from a full charge until it runs out?", but yes, mini-troll It's all good..
Hi,
I have another question about batterie life. I don't know if it has been already treated somewhere else in the forum.
I will receive the 2000mha batterie today. What is the best way to calibrate it?
Fully discharge it then full charge or full charge before first use?
Thanks for you help!

my battery in nexus s long about 4 houres in full use , that is problem ?
what can i do ?
Nice site, and it will only grow more useful the more people input their info. Although looking at the results, some of those 30+ hour claims seem outlandish.
my stock galaxy note battery takes me 6 hours to lose 50%. hope it could last longer.
On my Galaxy S running ICS 4.0.4 Dark Knight 2.2, my battery lose about 25% by day. But with light use (1 or 2 calls, some SMS, GMail sync, ...)
really miss the days with my old nokia which i only needed to charge every two or three days haha.....

my phone keep charged almost 1 day
I don't know if it happen for someone else but i noticed a sort of "bug" with my HTC HD7. (Bought in December 2010)
If i reboot my phone when the charge is at X%, after the reboot, the charge level will be ~10% less than X ... and the phone will stay a very very long time at this percentage.
(For exemple, if after a reboot, i'm at 75%, the battery could stay at this level for all the day)
So as I imagine, it decalibrates the battery level and to make a new time the calibration i have to let my phone fully discharge and fully recharge to solve this bug.
Strange ...
(Sorry for my english guys, I hope i can be understand)
It seems that smartphones need more juice daily. However if you disconnect the mobile packet data whenever you are in range of WLAN you might get 2 days with one charge.
I am actually quite amazed how well my Samsung Galaxy S1 original battery has lasted almost 2 years. When I first started this smartphone journey with my S1 I thought that it will not last one year. I am glad that I was proven wrong.
Batteries
Definetely Smartphones need better batteries, especialy after we got used on some phones to last even 4 days like I had previously Nokia C7, and after that i bought Galaxy S2, and its battery lasts only 1 day, now thats really sad
my sgs+ with a custom rom (gigabread+) is alive up to 24 h.
My I9001 is at 30% at the end of the day (connected to wifi all the time)
battery life xperia s
my xperia s last 3 days with making some calls abou ta half an hour surfing on 3g a day and sometimes a game but when i use it a lot is lasts about one day and a half
HTC HD2 on nand android does ~4-6mah an hour on standbay, depending on torture i give it, it lasts a day to a day and half
My Samsung Note (stock 4.0.3), WiFi on all day, and average use (business mail, whats-app, games, some browsing)
after 15 hours the battery is still 40%~50%
i use SetCPU, it throttles up the CPU if its needed, at idle it runs at 200 MHz instead of 1.4 GHz
My SGS2 can last almost 2 days without using data. Its pretty good on battery

One X battery fix?

Okay so I presume all of you one X power users have noticed a the horrible battery performance. I only got my one x yesterday and I'm already frustrated with the fact that i yet again have to carry my charger around with me. Is there a fix? I have root and custom recovery. So if there is a fix for this please someone let me know.m
Since I flashed the Revolution HD I got excellent battery performance. Without doing too much stuff (just calling and texting), battery remains > 50% at the end of the day. I would really recommend that rom.
I've just flashed it, going to see how it goes. But I would've expected HTC to bang a beast of a battery for the beast of a processor and massive screen its gotta run. Oh well, still early days, hopefully we'll see massive software improvements.

Not really, no. Personally I did not unlock device, neither root it, neither installed any fix. And I must say that I'm more happy with battery life than I was with my previous phone SGS2. More then 16 hours here with 4 accounts synchronization on, 3g/wifi on, and sometimes gps + music on (for Endomondo). I'm really happy with my One X.
ARHD Rom, auto-brightness, plain wallpaper, no haptic feedback, no roaming, managing syncing, and a few other tweaks will leave this devices battery life as one of the best.

Yep. Relax. I got 6 hours from first charge, 10 hours from second charge, 12 hours from third charge...
After over two weeks I'm now getting between 18 and 24 hours. Give it a couple of weeks before judging battery life.

I try to use as much as I can the first few days, and time it so that you have about 10-30% charge left when you reach home from work/school and then I let it charge overnight.
I know quite a lot of time was spent idle, but 60% after 7 and a half hours isn't too bad http://twitter.com/Dev_Meltus/status/194082996767309825/photo/1/large
I've not really had a problem with battery life so far.

Have been seriously contemplating getting the One X.
My first choice had been the Galaxy S3..... but the One X seems the better choice.... I have had the iPhone 4 for almost 2 years, so now it's almost upgrade time If the Galaxy S3 had no physical home button I would be taking it.
Had been worried about the battery life of the one x but after reading these and a few others it seems worth it and it's available in black (dark grey but darker than S3 metallic blue)
I Just hope I don't have issues with app incompatibility for the apps I use on iPhone.
With normal usgae, I've got more than 10 hours after one charge. Not so happy with it but it's good enough for me.

have you got yourself the One X? if so, how is it compared with your previous phone?
i also want to swap my iphone 4 with One X and looking for different experiences especially with the battery life
I've turned everything off and left my phone on idle, my battery issue has persisted for over 6 months now (I bought it in Singapore on release day). With screen on min brightness, static wallpaper, most apps off, my battery drains fully within 6 hours. If I actually do anything with it like make phonecalls, it drains in hours. The battery phone is constantly hot, when on charge It's almost too hot to hold. If while on charge (AC) I use it to make a call, it complains that it's not receiving enough power. Should I look to get a replacement from HTC? I'm still using stock rom so it should be covered under warranty?
Sounds like the htc amaze battery overheat..
Also get gsam battery app.. it will tell you what apps are using what % of battery.
I also use advanced task manager from play store.. it proved to me how much gmaps Facebook and other bloat was ALWAYS RUNNING!.. I got root and froze it all with big improvements
Some of us who htc amaze w no warranty bought a new battery and that fixed it

Aside from your time travel/exaggeration, I suggest better battery stats, finding out what is causing wake lock, and killing.it.
Your phone is fine, but you have some crapware on it.

Htc One X -battery life

hello everyone, i am new to this community, sorry for my bad english, i would need some help. i have a htc one x for several weeks now, and i have a hudge problem with the battery life on this device, im a really hudge fan of htc, but im dissapointed, so for example, i have 9/10 lines of battery life in my settings menu, i plug it in , and start playing dead space, after 40 mins of playing the battery actually dropped by 2 lines , and i had left 7/10 lines of battery. how is that even possible??! all the phones i had, laptops, etc that require a battery worked in the folowing order: if you plug it in and took the battery out, it still worked, so if you had the battery in, it both keept alive the phone/laptop/every device on the world, while charging the battery, so if you use it, it wont loose power, but gained it. i wached a lot of videos and posts of people explaning hot to get more guice out of htx one x , and some wore like, well , dont use it too much, or do ont turn on your phone to see the clock cause it will save some battery..... ?!?! well i dodn't pay a ton of money to have a phone in my pocket and not be able to see what the time is, or play something/ lisen to music , without actually noticing that in 2-3 hours i wont be able to make a call, yes its a strong phone, and verry good one, by design, by hardware, and software, but the sad thing is the battery, does anyone have a mirracoulous tip for me? and perhaps others as well... (oh and i charged it as ppl from htc told me, first three times with the battery empty for 8 hrs..)
the battery will run out whilst charging, under heavy usage, because the phone is using more power than the charger can provide.
laptop chargers can handle this, simply because the charger provides more power to it. (and the fact laptop batteries tend to be several times the size of the hox)
you should only find that whilst using a battery/cpu intensive task such as navigation (it uses GPS, data sometimes, and the screen is on) that the charger won't be enough, but for most other things, like general web browsing etc, the charger will do it quickly enough
the screen is what takes basically all of the battery, so you can reduce that by making the screen brightness a bit less bright..
the battery life when the screen is off is incredible. WAY better than any other phone i've had. when the screen is off, the phone uses about 1% battery every 2 hours or so. and that was with wifi etc connected and autosync still switched on.
whether the phone will last you all day or not, depends on your usage. if it doesn't, then either make the brightness even lower, or you can purchase a portable charger. or a battery case.
there's no point saying well other phones have better battery life like an iphone. lets be realistic, the iphone DOES NOT have better battery life. it may have had decent standby battery life, but so does tegra 3, probably better than iphone now. when you actually use an iphone, or any other smartphone for that fact, the battery disappears just as quickly as this one does.
Tegra 3 standby is awesome. Just tried an experiment. Please note that this is with 3g or WiFi on all this time and with auto sync.
Again this is just to demonstrate standby time.
For the op, are you sure you don't have a rogue app? Also are you using an HTC charger?

i know stand by is awseome, and i am using the original out of the box charger and cable, but i might go ahead since i know a thing or two about electronics and modify the charger at 2 amps vs 1 amp currently.. this will give me faster charging, but im still researching, cuz i have second toughts

Unlikely. Unless the phone knows it can draw 2 amps, it has to assume a 1A capable charger (designated by connecting the data pins together).

I used it all 11 hours. Mostly reading second book of Game of Thrones in Kindle app. Checked some net sites, xda forum app, some blogs. Few calls and texts. All the time on wifi. Was sick in bed. Auto brightness, but as my eyes didn't liked strong sun is can say that it was quite dim inside.
But it probably depends on usage. Yesterday I was reading on the beach and I had 4 hours screen on time. Probably brightness all the way up as it was quite hot sunny day.
On normal day I get 4-5 hours screen on time.

batteries nowadays can resist pretty much, and unlike a laptop battery that has a chip in it and it records every charge, and then after x charges it suddeny stops working correctely this is cuz of the company chip they insertet to make is useless after x charges, a phone battery is just a normal one, this is tested, i opened a laptop battery and took the chip out, and via com port on pc, i was able to retrive the data storred by the company that produced it, but was not able to reset it, (comsporacy) lol . so i will buy a htc battery, not necesarry one x's and i will test it my charging it a couple o times bowth with the amp maxed, from 1 to 2 (1,1..1,2 etc) and voltage from 5 to 10 V, maby ill get a result, that is a little better than the technique i saw a couple pages away about charging your phone, then powerring it off, charging it again, then pwr on charging it again etc, forgot the method name, but in my opinion bubjecting a rechargable battery to so manny fluctuations of current in so little time does not sound good, my idea of amping the charger or the voltage by just a little sounds a little better in my opinion

you have a lot to learn then.. Batteries can explode, and they do: here's a video of some guys iphone setting on fire in his back pocket, turned out to be the battery that caused it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIRXDeEzlcw&feature=youtube_gdata_player
That isn't my pure reasoning behind my thoughts anyways, whatever experiments you do with higher amp chargers won't do anything, because the phone won't accept more charge than the circuitry allows. Which happens to be a safe amount for the battery. This is so the battery doesn't get damaged, and in some circumstances, set on fire or explode.
If you take the battery out and start prodding things at it and take it over its limits, be prepared for fire or explosion. Like Ben said, put yourself and only yourself at risk if you choose to do it.. And be wise and have a fire extinguisher ready.

I've been having the same issue as well. The stock ROM on HTC one X drains the battery rapidly. For me, In normal day which includes listening to music, playing games, browsing and making calls, my battery would last maximum up to 20 hours; meaning that every night when I go to bed I had to charge it for the next day.
This problem was battling me a lot. I learned that the stock ROM is taking advantage of all (4) CPU's and memory even while in idle. The whole battery consumption relies on the CPU usage and Memory management.
I moved to a custom ROM called ViperX 2.6.0. I'm very satisfied with the result. It seams that they've managed the CPU and memory in a very good and neat way. The ROM has a lot of tweaks.By default, when installing the fresh ROM and wiping the battery stat, the battery would last one and half a day. By doing a number of simple tweaks such as disabling the animations on transitions, disable fast dormancy and disable smart sync you can have the battery up to two days.
Check the attachment, it's a screen shot of my battery usage.
Hope this helps.

How the hell are you getting this much screen time ?!
I dim the screen to the lowest brightness and disable
sync and sometimes in flight mode, and I can hardly get
3h of screen time! I mostly read on it, so it shouldn't
be battery intensive.
oh, and If I use it outside it lasts even less 2-2.5h.
What's your secret?
Oh and I use the latest CM10, and downclock my

Then your phone is knackered.
I can get 4+hrs screen on time with auto brightness, auto sync, stock cpu levels with wifi on.
That's no secret, that's just what it does.
As for 'just reading' - you can easily get over 13hrs screen on time with lowest brightness & flight mode - I've tested it myself on the Kindle app.

AOSP roms get much less battery life than Sense roms, 3hrs screen on time is about average.
I'm currently running CM10 with Neo kernel 7.2 @ 1.3GHz and getting almost 4hrs screen on time. With Faux kernel it was usually around 3hrs.
Chrisjcks, what do u mean by "your phone is knackered"?!
Its a new phone! I just got it 2 weeks ago.
Michealtbh, it may be somthing with the APOP rom, but I really
hate using sense ... I want to try this Neo Karnel first,
Can I just flash it on my cm10? (without wipe)
Where can I get it?

Chrisjcks, what do u mean by "your phone is knackered"?!
Its a new phone! I just got it 2 weeks ago.
Michealtbh, it may be somthing with the APOP rom, but I really
hate using sense ... I want to try this Neo Karnel first,
Can I just flash it on my cm10? (without wipe)
Where can I get it?

Your phone is fine.
You can find it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1873615
You have to flash the boot.img through fastboot then the modules in recovery. You're probably using CM10 kernel atm

Ok, but don't moan of battery if you are running a beta (alpha) custom rom.
The HTC ONE X battery is fine, especially after the sense 4.1/4.0.4 upgrade from 2.17

Michealtbh, Thanks!
I'll try that soon. (it's stable, right?)
I'm now testing the new Nightly.. it's real good and battery life,
seems promising, looks like I'll get 3.5-4h of screen time there
(No sync with low brightness though)
chrisjcks, I'm not using alpha roms, just the stable ones.
and this DOES feel very bad battery life to me, I come to the hox
from Motorola milestone, and there I could easily get 7-8 hours
of screen time with wifi. (and it has smaller battery and 40% overclocked!!)
How much do you get on the new stock?
When I was on stock i remember it ran out after half a day,
only using it for music and taking some videos.
Battery life varies a lot. On stock in London I get a full day screen time of around 2-3 hours with 3G on all the time. Which for me is fine.
Last weekend I was in Portsmouth and the signal was very patchy and my phone died within 10 hours. Hardly any screen on time.
So it does really depend and will vary for user to user depending on your signal and how the phone is set up.
Mine is usually on auto brightness, and auto syncing on.
Today I've been at home as I've got a damn cold but my screen on time is over 4 hours in good signal and wifi. Same setup. So you can gather from this that signal, data used, etc can affect battery life in many ways.

After 6 month, the battery performance get worse

I just want to know is there any guy like me, have used one x for 5~ 6 months. Now the battery performace get worse?
I have not changed the rom for 4 months. Same usage pattern. Before after full charge, the battery go down from 100 to 90 take more than hour. Now just few minutes it drop fast to that. Also screen on time seems only 2.5~3 hours compare to before is 3.5~4 in average.
I do not hope to get a reason why this happen, but just see is other old user of one x has same experience see the obvious battery performace down.
Thanks for your input!
I own hox since it came out and what I can say about battery is that it is very inconsistent, it all depends on where you use phone more home, work, bad signal areas etc. Sometimes I get 4 hours screen time on 24 hours standby, sometimes only 2. I can't really tell how it should be. All I care is that I'm feeling ok with its battery. Although I'm really liking the idea of being able to put in onex+ battery, but I couldn't do it myself

I have my hox since May, no problem at all, flashing aprox 2 roms per day...battery is the same as first day but lasts more thanks dev work
SkyDragon Sense Rom V1
I have Evo Lt, almost same phone but krait s4 dual core and 2100 battery. After 6mo., I swear I'm seeing degradation.

2.5 hours screen on time is a drop of 10% every 15 minutes. Not every few minutes.
Try installing better battery stats to see.if anything is using the battery when.it shouldn't be.
Also, it could be something like signal strength.
I have been destroying my battery in many ways: overcharging, playing games while charging, discharging completely...but it still doesn't get worse...
Look after apps you've installed in last month, they are the evil...(the worst of them a those with notifications

Your HOX battery life experience?

I see countless comments with people complaining about battery life not being good enough in most threads, and it being affected positively/negatively by updates.
I'm aware a lot of ROMs can have a very positive effect on battery life but I am more interested in the general overview – your battery life's life if you will! The reason I ask for your experiences is that I would like to qualitatively collect a bit of information from a fair few people and see what's to be seen.
It's worth noting that my latest HOX's battery life is exceptional and I believe it's down to a simple life/career change. It's really nothing new to someone who knows their fair share about batteries however I would be interested to compare.
So, list the times you wake up, take your phone off charge, put your phone back on charge, and go to sleep. If you can it would also be nice to know what your battery percentage is at certain points. It would also be interesting to know what hours you do on an average working week and in what sort of work environment (home/architect, office/marketing, shop/clothes retail etc).
If anyone can remember the things off the top of your head, even rough estimates just chuck then in the thread. I will then compare them all to my own personal habits.

Personally for me ICS was 4.0.4 was perfect, after update to JB it's really bad. On ICS i was loosing 1% of my battery during whole night on JB i can even loose 10% ; d. Overall battery drains faster during usage... all stock.
There's already a thread for battery stats.

Fantastic. I'm more interested in people's actual habits not stats about their battery because it only tells one half of the story. Like I mentioned this is more of a qualitative approach, so less battery stats.
I should of assumed that most people would be like more yourself so I will get straight to the point.
I have the benefit of working at home which means I can charge my phone whenever. I'm not forced to charge it over night; having it over charging for excessive amounts of time. I charge mine in the day and as a result I'm conscious when it hits 100% – I then unplug it. Other than natural degradation, I doubt I have ever damaged my battery in any way which has left me with a great battery life.
I was quite interested if most people charge their phones at night, go to sleep, unplug their phones when they wake up etc. This will severely accelerate the degradation of the battery.
well for me, ICS was bad...im using custom rom and various kernel to see which has the best battery life...all bad accept ncx 0.99....well some of the time its ok but some not...the battery percentage in ICS if not using will stay at 1% but for a 5 minute use, it will drop 10%...but amazingly, if you keep using in screen on, wifi or whatever, it will not drop that fast, well for me its ok....but now i have updated to JB still in stock, and the battery life is great.. i have watch HD movie using MX player in 2 hour and only drop 20%....when in ICS about 80%...big difference....i think stock kernel is best...
Well for me it's decent i mean yes it could be better but it's okay... heres my usage: i take it off the charge around 10 am when i wake up or so and it's off the charge till the next day morning with avarage 45-50% battery left and screan on time avarage 2:30 hours - 3 hours, sync with FB , hotmail and weather is On all the time as well is the wi-fi even when i sleep, my reception aint so great tho , around 2-3 bars top 4, 2g network, anyway my tops on the screan time would be around 6 hours with around 30% brightness idk how that guy managed to achive 6hours 20 mins on a single charge on medium brightness , could be jelly bean or maybe partitial charges ( i'm on ics btw ), anyway hox battery aint so bad as ppl may think, besides if you're lucky enough you'll get hox + battery into your hox ( 2100 ma ) which should provide avarage 6 hours + screan on time, tho i bet we could get around 8 with that battery. Hope this helps.
Ive got arhd and i got to say Im happy with my battery life, first I wasnt, when I went through a couple of charge cycles it got better and better. Now I can do 3.5 hours on screen time playing games and use it for atleast 24 hours with a mix of everything with watching videos to on the bus lol. So mines has been really good.
Battery has been pretty bad on any ROM. Now that I have ICJ421, my battery is near perfect. Yesterday I got 14h with 3h22m Screen On time.
