Someone tell me how I can clean my phone, I need to wipe it completely, and reinstall everything from scratch. Really wish I had rooted first, would have been alot easier, alot more resources for root.

Menu>Settings>SD & Phone Storage>Factory Reset
let me repeat my question, and get more specific. I need to wipe all data off my phone, everything.
Then I need to get the OS back on it.
Can someone tell me if you can do this without root, I need to completely clear all partitions AFAIK and then get a new CLEAN UNHACKED OS onto my phone.
Factory reset is not enough
RUU is not enough (alone anyway)
I need to get the flashable regions of my phone totally clear of malicious code.
bump for edit for previous
I don't think you have any options without root...only other option without root is boot into bootloader and clear storage.
For curiousity, what did you do that you need to undo and how could you have pushed "malicious code" onto other partitions without root?
unless you work for HTC or know somone that does, i thnk you are pretty boned, even contacting them directly all ive gotten is the usual "it cant be done" line so ....just wait for the hboot to get hacked and do it then i suppose..
What Android version are you on and your phone is currently rooted correct?
He stated in original post that it is NOT rooted.
4.24 gb EVO
hacked as hell
i think it was rooted before not to my knowledge, and flashed. also calendar exploited via google, I hope i can get some help outside the dev forum, because I i know they dont like questions there, thats why im posting here instead.
cant clean it now that i have OTA'd to GB.
I am finding alot of cool app engines along my trials and tribulations. makes me wish I had not stopped working in security several years back.
Someone gonna give a guy a hand? I am as trustworthy as they come if you are worried about anything getting out and about.
If it was rooted before, go into the bootloader and check if it says S-ON or S-OFF. If it's S-OFF, you can flash a recovery and now you're rooted again.
If it's S-ON, no, you can't do anything right now.
yeah im screwed
i just love it when my camera and speaker come on and monitor me all day and night long.

Sigh...ok...I'll bite. Why do you think your phone is doing this? What evidence?
And does the tin foil mess up your hair?
i watch the logs, i see the mic and or cameras come on, i see the filesys filling where I cant go see it because im not root, i see the traffic as it xmits it from local host to local host, i see the traces of the encryption keys and stunnels. This is only one instance.
I hope there is someone around here who has something more to offer than the people outside the dev forums, im getting killed following the rules.
So let me get this straight and my apologizies for sounding confuzed becasue every reply has been all over the place and has been of no real help to you yet..
Your on GB version 4.24 correct? Previously Rooted without you knowing? Your trying to get back too 100% stock as well? I hope I'm following this so far.
1st, the easiest way, download Root Checker from the Market and that will tell you right off the bat if your rooted or not. If thats not possible, enter bootloader as stated before and verify S-Off at top of screen. If so, flash Amon_Ra Recovery (rename to PC36IMG.zip if not already and place on root of SD Card). Enter bootloader and let it scan, apply update and from there you can do what you need to do. If it says S-On but you know your rooted, go to xHausx Auto Root guide, download the Froyo 3.70.651 Stock rom and place on Root of Sd Card named PC36IMG.zip, enter bootloader, let it scan and apply update, that will take you too 100% stock Froyo with hBoot 2.10 and you can apply GB update if desired or root with whatever method of your choice.
Once again, sorry if this is not what you were wanting but its irritating when you get the run around and people talk about tin foil hats and ridiculous stuff...and agreed, very hard to follow rules when most replies are worthless.

Read 1 post below yours, only way to figue out how to help is to know the details. Good 2 cents though.
I will give it a go, after I upgraded OTA it made me s-on, so i think im just screwed now.
I tried the ruu to go back but as you know it says too old files etc
i imagine this will do the same but i will try anything once, the guys at sprint gave me the go ahead to do whateever i need to do to try to backrev this thing, and if i brick it they will replace it so im up for ANYTHING PEOPLE
If you were originally s-off, the ota shouldn't have updated hboot. It can't turn you s-on, unless you reverse it yourself first..
Which means you were always s-on, and currently there is no way to assist you.
lets start over. are u S-OFF or S-ON? that will determine what ur options are.

There isn't anything that can be done for you at the moment. You said your s-on which means your not rooted which in turn means your bootloader is locked and you can't install a recovery and install the files you need to fix your problem. So I would call Sprint and tell em your device is being defective.

If you could read his original post, he said - it is currently not rooted - who cares if it was rooted before or not. He has S-ON = NOT rooted = he is out of luck...
That's my 3 cents
Hey guys, I recently got my Gnex(internation version from expansys) last week, but I'm a little bit on the fence when it comes to rooting as this is my first Android device. What are the benefits? I mean, I know that you guys get a ton of options with the variety of roms available to download/install, but I'm liking the stock ics that came with the device. If somebody cold convince on on doing it, then I'd be grateful. My baseband is XXLA2, is that the recommended one if I'm living in the US?
The ability to control your phone like you should. However being a really new person to android I wouldn't recommend you do it right away. Maybe browse the forum and learn somethings. Knowledge is power.

Root gives you admin access to your phone. Definitely you should root, even if you want to stay on stock factory rom.

Only if he sees the benefits for himself. There's absolutely no reason for him to root if he doesn't understand what it does or how it will help/hurt him.
As mentioned previously, root access is admin access to the phone. Some benefits of it include being able to use the Adfree app to block advertisements in apps or Titanium Backup to backup apps the data associated with them. I'd take the time to get to know the phone and operating system first and then decide if you have a need for apps that require root access.
Off the top of my head:
-Fastest updates
-Ad removal
-Firewall
-True call blocking
-Lightflow
-Theming
-Backups (titanium, nandroid)
-Custom ROMs and all the millions of features they have (you could write pages and pages about this alone)
-Custom kernels (better battery+performance, touch wake, etc)
Since you have the Galaxy Nexus(a dev phone) as opposed to another locked-down phone, rooting is very, very easy. Unless you do something totally retarded you'll be safe. Just don't use toolkits -- do it manually.

-You don't need to root to get fast updates. You can flash update files the day they come out via fastboot w/ an unlocked bootloader.
-Lightflow also works w/o root.
-You can do backups with ADB also.

I guess I was thinking of "root" being synonymous with unlocked bootloader. My old phone required root...still need root for TB.

Yes this is usually the case with other phones. With the Nexus, its extremely easy to unlock the bootloader and not root. I'd recommend unlocking the bootloader on this phone, but I'm not so quick to recommend rooting. People on XDA or too quick to recommend rooting to people who have absolutely no idea what it is and end up bricking their device.

+1. Exactly.
You do not need root to flash custom ROMs, get updates, etc. if you have an unlocked bootloader. I totally agree with martonikaj: you SHOULD unlock your bootloader, but you shouldn't mess around with root until you know what root is and need it.

I would unlock the bootloader immediately if you think you'll ever want to root the phone. Reason why is that you can unlock the bootloader easily with a single command, but it will wipe your phone, and there's no good way to do a real backup without rooting it. Better to do it now, before you have everything set up the way you want it and all of your apps installed.
For rooting, I agree that you shouldn't do it until you have a better idea what it is and why you want to do it.
I've been back and forth between root and non-root (always unlocked bootloader) and other than a few things already mentioned (Ad-free, Titanium Backup) I'm the type that can live with Stock ICS. I do flash custom ROM's once in a while to see if I enjoy them but I've always come back to Stock (for now) because of random reboot issues.

From someone who knows just enough to get by....
Unlocking your bootloader allows you to flash custom recovery/ROM/Stock version/etc. You don't need root for this.
Root allows you full access to the phone with superuser permissions and install some apps that require full access to system files.

You couldn't have been doing a lot of good reading if you've been reading for a year and don't know the difference. But don't feel bad -- there are lots of senior members that use the terms interchangeably which is completely and utterly wrong.
Root means having root user access to the file system. Kinda like being the administrator user on Windows machines. You can access all the files and modify and delete anything. The process consists of placing two files on the /system partition of your device. The problems with this process, is finding a way to make /system write-able to place those two files there (as it is read-only by default when you are booted in Android). Chicken or the egg -- You need root to get root.
Think of the bootloader as the BIOS of a computer. It loads up before the operating system, and allows you to perform certain basic tasks. In our case, the bootloader allows you to flash images to your device, and to boot images on your devices (without actually writing them to the NAND). Unlocking the bootloader removes the security on the bootloader, which means that the bootloader no longer verifies the signature of images you are trying to flash or boot and, thus, allows you to flash or boot non-Google signed images.
Now, are rooting and unlocking your bootloader related? Well, to a certain extent yes. If you unlock your bootloader, you can easily obtain root access. This is true because you can flash or boot a custom recovery, which will allow you to write files to /system without being booted into Android. So, with an unlocked bootloader, "rooting" becomes trivial. However, there are other ways to root -- by using exploits. GNex Android builds up to ICL53F can be rooted by mempodroid (see link 4 in my signature), but to-date, an exploit has not been found for IMM76D and higher.

Rooting your gnex doesn't need to be seen as taking a dive off a cliff while blindfolded. This is a myth perpetuated by people who have either never rooted their devices or did something retarded and bricked it. It's easy, painless, and uncomplicated if you follow the instructions. If you can take advantage of the ad removal, backups, call blocking, etc with ease....why not do it?

I'll proceed to unlock the bootloader, but will remain on stock for a while until I get the hang of it and want to expand my options.
My question is because i have a HTC EVO 4G and I rooted it. I had ensure for it and i had to send it back to Sprint, and I looked every where and couldn't unroot it. The S-OFF is always there and found other people with the same problem. (I did tried the S-on zip and all that, new custom, Stock Roms but none worked) I ended up paying the $100 for a replacement EVO... Now I have a S3. (my EVO still on the closet)
I want to root my:
Samsung Galaxy S3
Model SPH-L710
Android 4.1.1
..............................But before I do that I want to make sure I can unroot it and run the stock rom, is there any file that I have to backup or anything before rooting it? My HTC EVO I rooted and loss 4G with the stock rom because I want suppose to backup something first accourding to some articule that i read..
Again, What steps I have to take before rooting my S3 in order to unroot it without any problem?

Quickest root possible. Nothing to backup. Granted this is shiit you should know already
Pre root steps.. Open laptop/Start desktop. Watch video. Drink beer (if of age) download files needed. Plug in phone..
This is probaly one of the easiest/Quickest roots i've done yet.. Just follow the instructions and you shouldn't go wrong. Just ensure you don't flash anything for the wrong carrier or for the I9300 International version of our phone. And you'll be fine! (The things i mentioned could cause a hard brick rendering the phone nothing more then a paperweight.)

First and foremost, I apologize for being such a noob.
I don't know what I'm doing here, since this is a place for expert developers, and I am not one.
But, I'm purchasing an Xperia Play very soon, and I ran across the AuroraPlay ROM which apparently speeds up the device a bit (Main Features - Clocked by default to 1.2GHz, Full GPU Hardware Acceleration, Boots in less than five seconds, etc.)
So, I thought, "This is really something, I should think about installing this, it'll surely make games and such a lot more fun on my Xperia Play."
I know the mere basics that anyone knows- unlocking, rooting, roms, kernels, firmware, etc.
But when it comes to getting down and actually doing something more advanced than simply rooting or unlocking a phone, I get cold feet.
What I mean by this, is I'm not completely sure how to install this ROM, and I don't want to brick my phone.
I've seen the installation instructions, though I'm still confused on some parts.
What's an Un/Locked Bootloader? How do I know if mine is un/locked?
How do I "Flash using Flashtool"? or "Root using Flashtool"?
What is X-Parts Recovery? What is ClockWorkMod? How do I use them?
At this point it may seem obvious this isn't for me, but if there is a more detailed tutorial out there for this ROM, that would be EXCELLENT!
Again, sorry for the trouble.

Un/locked bootloader is about changing kernel and u can find it with enter *#*#7378423#*#* in phone
And if u have unlocked bootloader u can flash a kernel using flashtool with going to fastboot mode(power off ur phone and hold search button then plug ur usb)
To root ur device using flashtool u should connect ur phone to computer then in flashtool click on opened lock
And x-part is an app that installing recovery for locked bootloader and with recovery u can install roms on ir phone

First and foremost don't think you're a noob, everyone has to begin somewhere.and I don't own an xperia play but the basics are all the same.A flashtool is a program used only to flash roms and kernels but not root your device. For rooting, there are other toolkits, most of them really simple, just plug ur phone and follow the instructions shown.as far as I know, there is no need to unlock the bootloader of ur phone as long as u flash stock based roms but to flash custom kernels and roms,u need to unlock the bootloader and the bootloader for any mobile will be LOCKED by default. Behold.. Unlocking the bootloader can only be done officially and u will forever lose warranty and some other stuff like drm keys,etc..relocking the bootloader is also possible but ur warranty still be void.clockworkmod(cwm) is a custom recovery which gives many more features than a stock recovery and is used for flashing firmwares, kernels, etc,u can see about that on YouTube cuz there are walkthroughs for almost anything.I don't know much about X-parts though.there u go.hope I helped u.hit thanks if I did.

Thanks for the replies.
By the way, is there anything I need to do with my phone before I began the installation process? The phone obviously needs to be rooted, right?
Or can it be done straight out of the box?
If u r gonna root the phone as soon as u open it,there is nothing much u need to do..download all the files beforehand and be sure to double check the model number of ur device.if u really want to flash a custom kernel,u must unlock ur bootloader and as it was said,u won't have the warranty after that.So what I suggest is u use the phone for about 2-4 days and make sure there is no defect in it,just to be sure.So happy rooting!Hit thanks if I helped.

To install jelly bean you need to unlock your bootloader. The touchpads are not working very well though...
About the warranty thing, Sony says this voids your warranty, but I did it anyway a few months after I got my phone, and recently both of my cameras died (not at the same time, but I didn't care about the front camera) and they fixed them for free so maybe they still fix hardware defects (they did it for me). Of course I did re lock my bootloader before giving them my phone but they could know it since they had mY IMEI

Hi all,
I have a zenfone 2 that I have just rooted....so now what?
Basically I wanted to optimise my phone so I am able to disable annoying notifications which are greyed out (although since rooting and checking this it still greyed out) I want to remove bloatware and I would actually like to customise my own android system, starting from a 'vanilla' base where I can build it up myself.
I have also read that I need to install a android recovery programme on asap after rooting.
So sorry about this but I really do need 'stupid' instructions as using hi tech words will just baffle me. lol
I have played around with computers in the past and learned about them so this is the phone stage now!
Thanks in advance and for your patience with this newbie!

Hi Kerry,
First thing you should now do after rooting your device would be flashing a custom recovery that is specific to your device (make sure your devices boot loader is unlocked first). This will allow you to make a backup of everything just in case anything were to go wrong, flash custom ROMs and useful zips. You can pick your favorite custom recovery such as Team Win Recovery Projects custom recovery (TWRP), Clock Work Mods custom recovery (CWM) or Philz Touch recovery based off of CWM although personally I would recommended twrp.
There are multiple ways to do this: Using the TWRP/CWM recovery installer from the play store or the more complicated way of flashing it from your computer. If you were to choose to install TWRP from their app on the play store (grant it root permission) you can select your device from the supported device section within the app, pick the latest recovery, hit the install button and let the app work its magic. If all works correctly you can now reboot to recovery and you will see TWRP is installed. Now you should create a backup to be on the safe side and you're good to go!
To best optimize your device I would recommend installing a custom ROM (look up custom ROMs for the Zenfone 2) and install the zip through recovery. (make sure to pick the right ROM for your device and version otherwise you may soft brick your smartphone) Now with a custom ROM you can better optimize your device and fully customize it to your liking. Make sure to look up custom ROM installation instructions for your device for better detail.
As far as removing system apps/bloatware you can use a "root app delete" tool from the play store but be careful what you remove as some applications are required!
Make sure to take your time and be careful when attempting any of these things and be careful what you modify! Just remember that no question is a stupid question as we all have to start somewhere!
Hope I was able to help you even if it was just a little, good look and have fun!

Not a problem! I'm always happy to spread some knowledge and appreciate when people do the same to me! I also went ahead and checked the TWRP app and the Zenfone 2 is supported so it looks like your good to go. Check this site out:

All devices have a different method for unlocking bootloader (some don't even have locked bootloaders) but this is an official bootloader unlocking method for the Zenfone 2 from Asus itself. I suggest following its directions and you should be able to unlock it this way.
Ok I followed the link but now I am confused. I have version ww_2.20.40.63_201......
Apparently I need a later version. What started off with just adding an APP means me doing other things before I even get to that point (hence the confusion! lol)
I never updated the phone via OTA as I was told it would invalidate my warranty and also I have killed a phone before using that so can you walk me through please...if you have the time....or could I just check if I have it unlocked already??
I haven't even gotten to the part where I create a backup...tee hee

Hi sorry for the late reply, I'm in Canada so it was 2am when I was last talking to you so I went to bed haha. Anyway as far as unlocking the Zenfone 2's bootloader I wouldn't have experience unfortunately as I'm using a Nexus 5. The easiest way to go about this now would be to go to your device specific forum and find a way to unlock it there.
The following way to unlock the bootloader requires you have ADB installed on your PC. This is a guide for installation on Windows :
http://www.android.gs/install-android-sdk-adb-windows/
And here is a thread specific to unlocking the Zenfone 2 using adb:
http://www.xda-developers.com/asus-zenfone-2-bootloader-unlocked-without-asus/
BTW as you mentioned "updating may invalidate your warranty" things like rooting, installing a custom OS, unlocking the bootloader, installing a custom recovery and other things like that all (in most cases) void your warranty.
Sorry I can't personally help with the bootloader as I've not personally unlocked it on a Zenfone. Still feel free to ask any questions if you need to. Good luck!
